You know that your phone is an essential item to have, but did you know that it can actually save your life? There are thousands of people every year that are fortunate enough to have their phone save them from death. Here are three stories of people who have had their iPhone save their life!

1. Soldier in Afghanistan

iphoneJoel Stubleski was shot in the thigh when in a fire-fight in Eastern Afghanistan. The bleeding from this area was heavy and Joel felt that his time was limited. After being picked up by medics, they discovered that his iPhone was actually in his pocket and had a bullet hole through it. The doctors said that his phone likely saved his life, as it changed the way the bullet entered his body and ensured it avoided hitting a major artery.

John is still recovering today, as this injury occurred in February of 2013. He keeps the iPhone as a reminder of how close he came to death and how lucky he was to have it in his pocket.

2. Earthquake Survivor

The Haiti earthquake killed thousands of people, but one lucky person was able to survive because of their phone. Dan Woolley was in Haiti when the earthquake struck. He got hurt and suffered from injuries, which could have taken his life if it weren’t for his medical apps on his iPhone. He was able to use his phone to not only diagnose his injuries, but also treat them. This helped to prevent him from going into shock, which would have been deadly. After he was able to get up, he used the camera on his phone to find out where rescue areas were at.

If it weren’t for his phone, Dan doesn’t know where he would be today. He feels that the iPhone definitely save his life, as help was scarce in the area where he first got hurt.

3. Kayaker in Florida

For Christmas, Andrew and his girlfriend decided to go kayaking in Florida, just off of the Southern coast. Soon after setting off they were seeing beautiful areas that were untouched by modern civilization today. They were with two other people, his girlfriend’s brother and his girlfriend. The brother’s girlfriend slowed things down, as she was not experienced and didn’t have the best kayak out there. After staying the night in one area, they faced a part of the water that had high winds and 4 foot water swells. After spending a lot of time and energy fighting the force into the sea, they made their way back to the island and started looking for her brother.

By using his iPhone, Andrew was able to call the Coast Guard and find out where the brother and his girlfriend were at. He did this by using a GPS app he had downloaded just before the trip began. Ultimately this was what saved their lives, as the Coast Guard was able to easily rescue them and the brother with his girlfriend.

A robust hypothesis and study protocol must be developed to guide the trial investigators, a team of health professionals with expertise in the field, and ethical approval must be obtained before the trial can proceed. Although risk cannot be completely eliminated from the clinical trials process, the robust scrutiny and regulation in place ensures that the safety of volunteers remains the primary concern throughout.

What Are the Goals Of A Trial?

The trials process has a number of aims but the ultimate goal is to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of the medicine when used in humans. The information obtained from the trial will be used to determine appropriate doses, likelihood of side effects and potential for interactions with other medicines. It will also provide important information on how the body reacts to the drug and how (and how quickly) the drug is eliminated from the body.

Do Volunteers get Paid?

Healthy volunteers who participate in clinical trials receive a fee proportionate to the length of time committed to the trial (typical trial duration is between 1 and 30 days) and may also receive travel expenses (up to £100) to cover costs associated with journeys to and from the Clinical Research Unit.

Who Can Apply?

Depending on the nature of the medicine being evaluated, volunteers may be sought from different age groups or sexes. Some trials may require healthy males aged 18-55, some females in the same age group and some may require post-menopausal, surgically sterile women.

The safety of those participating in the clinical trial is paramount. Volunteers must be healthy and must successfully complete an initial medical, also known as a screening visit, before being accepted into the trial cohort. Volunteers who fail the screening visit will be excluded from participation in the trial. Additionally, individuals may only participate in one trial at any time and must wait a minimum of three months after completing a trial before enrolling in further programmes.

The ukelele is regaining popularity amongst those who prefer a light, but versatile instrument. Similar to a guitar but much, much smaller, the ukelele is often confused with the mandolin.
