Pinterest is diving deeper into the e-commerce game with its upcoming shoppable live series, Pinterest TV, which is set to debut on November 8th. Each episode will star a creator from the platform, airing Monday through Friday at 6 PM ET on iOS and Android. Shows will cover different topics every day, ranging from fashion, beauty, home, food, and more. On Fridays, episodes turn into a QVC-style shopping show, where viewers can purchase exclusive products from different brands, such as Patagonia, Crown Affair, Allbirds, Outdoor Voices, Mented, and Melody Ehsani, using special discounts. Some Pinterest-exclusive shows are already in the works, like Christian On, in which fashion designer Christian Siriano will replicate the most popular fashion-related searches on Pinterest. Meanwhile, Monica Suriyage and food creators from Pinterest will help rescue failed holiday dishes in Unfair My. Other confirmed shows are planned with makeup artist Manny MUA, Olympic athlete Tom Daley, and comedian Robyn Schall. Every episode will be recorded and available to watch via the TV icon in the top-left corner of the Pinterest app. During the show, you’ll be able to ask questions in the chat and interact with hosts. Aside from Pinterest TV, the platform also notes that it’s debuting a “virtual studio,” in which producers from Pinterest can provide technical support, as well as collaborate with creators to make engaging content. Creators can show off and tag products during their shows, as well as offer exclusive discounts — viewers, can then select, view, and purchase the product from the retailer’s site. Pinterest first began to wade into creator monetization in July of this year, introducing shoppable pins that let creators tag and sell products to earn a cut of the profit. As social media platforms seek more ways to attract influencers and help them make money, live shopping has become a major trend. Amazon helped boost the movement in July 2020 when it added shoppable live streams from which influencers can profit. Facebook and Instagram debuted live shopping experiences in August 2020 — on top of the Shop pages that both platforms already have. Pinterest TV is the platform’s answer to live shopping. Since Pinterest is already built around displaying products that users might want, it only makes sense to expand from shoppable pins to engaging live shopping experiences. source https://g7conet.com/news_single/pinterest-hops-on-the-live-shopping-trend-with-pinterest-tv

Google yesterday (Oct. 28) pushed out an update for Chrome on the desktop that fixes eight security vulnerabilities, including two serious "zero-day" flaws that are already under attack by hackers unnamed. The update takes Chrome to version 95.0.4638.69 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Windows and Mac users can usually just relaunch the browser to install the update, while Linux users may have to wait until their distribution bundles the update into its regular update package. Otherwise, you can force a Chrome update by clicking the three vertical dots at the top right of the browser window, then mousing down and clicking Help. Click "About Google Chrome" in the fly-out menu that appears, and a new tab will either tell you that Chrome is up-to-date or will download the update. How these Chrome flaws can be exploited The first of the two zero-day flaws patched involves "insufficient validation of untrusted input in Intents," a protocol whereby Chrome finds the best web app to handle a particular purpose (cataloged as vulnerability CVE-2021-38000). The other allows "inappropriate implementation in V8," Chrome's JavaScript engine (cataloged as vulnerability CVE-2021-38003). https://g7conet.com/news_single/chrome-fixes-zero-day-flaws-under-hacker-attack

How would you like a smartwatch with a notch on it? No this isn’t a hypothetical question, because such a device may well be on the way. All from the artist formerly known as Facebook, Meta. A new leak (via Bloomberg) features a smartwatch design supposedly coming from Facebook/Meta in the near future. While the majority of the design isn’t particularly exciting, the built-in camera, and corresponding notch, do stand out. The picture was discovered by app developer Steve Mosser, who also uncovered some code about the watch inside the Ray-Ban Stories companion app — code that may indicate what the watch can do. The images seemingly reveal that the design is a rounded square, not too dissimilar from an Apple Watch, with a metal casing and (presumably) detachable straps. But that's not likely to make this watch stand out, because there are countless other wearables that look virtually identical. So the camera is likely to be the most unique feature; the only question is how it will be used. According to Moser, the code suggests that the camera may be able to capture photos and video, which can then be downloaded onto a linked phone. Bloomberg also posits that it could be used for video calling, and in essence become a portable version of Facebook's Portal range. The Information reported earlier this year that Facebook is working on its own smartwatch, ready for relay sometime in mid-2022. According to a follow-up report from The Verge, the Facebook watch would include two cameras that can share photos and video via Facebook’s library of apps. The front camera was said to be primarily for video calling, while the rear camera would supposedly offer auto-focus and 1080p resolution to take shots whenever it’s not being worn on your wrist. The Verge also claimed the watch could support LTE connectivity and feature a heart rate monitor. As for the watch’s name, Bloomberg claims that it could be called ‘Milan’, though we wouldn’t be surprised if Facebook/Meta tried to work in Portal or Meta branding. Especially since the company is now rebranding some Oculus headsets as ‘Meta’ headsets. However, the last one may be a bit trickier, since there's already been a smartwatch company called Meta. It’ll be interesting to see how that plays out, though no doubt Facebook/Meta, being the behemoth that it is, will get what it wants. But whether the Meta watch can compete with the likes of the Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 or other wearables is unclear. Especially given the privacy concerns around Facebook/Meta. https://g7conet.com/news_single/facebook-smartwatch-leaked-in-new-image

A decision by the United States to ban China Telecom from operating in the country on national security concerns is “malicious suppression”, Beijing said Thursday, warning it would damage a tentative thaw in relations. Tensions are high between the world’s two biggest economies on a plethora of fronts, including trade, human rights, Taiwan, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Earlier this week Washington ordered China Telecom Americas to discontinue its services within 60 days — ending nearly two decades of operations in the country and piling further strain on relations between the superpowers. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said China Telecom’s “ownership and control by the Chinese government raise significant national security and law enforcement risks”. The FCC added that this gave Beijing opportunities “to access, store, disrupt, and/or misroute US communications,” which in turn allowed them to engage in espionage and other harmful activities against the US. But Beijing rejected the move as a “generalization of the concept of national security, abuse of national power and malicious suppression of a Chinese company without basis in facts”. Commerce ministry spokeswoman Shu Yuting told a press briefing that China’s economic and trade team has “lodged solemn representations” with the United States and that Beijing is seriously concerned by the ban. The latest move in the long-running standoff comes as US President Joe Biden presses ahead with a hardline trade policy against Beijing broadly in line with that of his predecessor Donald Trump, whose bombastic approach sent tensions soaring. The announcement also came hours after Chinese Vice Premier Liu He and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen held trade discussions via a video call that Beijing described as “pragmatic, candid and constructive”. But Shu said Thursday that the latest FCC announcement from Washington had “undermined the atmosphere of cooperation” between the sides, vowing that Beijing would safeguard the “rights and interests” of its enterprises. China Telecom is China’s largest fixed-line operator, but it has faced trouble in the United States for years, particularly during Trump’s presidency as the former president repeatedly clashed with Beijing over trade. The company was delisted by the New York Stock Exchange in January along with fellow state-owned telecoms firms China Mobile and China Unicom. China Telecom spokesman Ge Yu told AFP that the FCC’s decision was “disappointing”. US regulators have previously taken action against other Chinese firms, notably private telecoms giant Huawei. Trump’s White House in 2018 began an aggressive campaign to short-circuit Huawei’s global ambitions, cutting it off from key components and banning it from using Google’s Android services. https://g7conet.com/news_single/beijing-us-ban-on-china-telecom-is-lsquo-malicious-suppression-rsquo-

The US Copyright Office is expanding a legal shield for fixing digital devices, including cars and medical devices. This morning, the office submitted new exemptions to Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which bars breaking software copy protection. The resulting rules include a revamped section on device repair, reflecting renewed government pressure around “right to repair” issues. The Register of Copyrights recommends Section 1201 “anti-circumvention” exemptions every three years, a process that has offered legal protections for everything from unlocking cellphones to ripping DVD clips for classroom use. In addition to renewing these and several other exemptions, this latest rulemaking adopts repair-related proposals from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, iFixit, and other organizations. The Librarian of Congress adopted the recommendations in a final rule that will take effect tomorrow. The exemptions replace an itemized list of repairable devices with broad protections for any consumer devices that rely on software to function, as well as land and sea vehicles and medical devices that aren’t consumer-focused. The rulemaking doesn’t rewrite the exemption to cover all non-consumer devices, and it doesn’t cover all “modification,” only “diagnosis, maintenance, and repair.” For video game consoles specifically, repair only covers repairing the device’s optical drives and requires re-enabling any technological protection measures that were circumvented afterward. “The petitioners did a good job of showing commonalities across different types of devices,” said Acting General Counsel Kevin Amer on a phone call with reporters. “We also are aware of some of the efforts that the executive branch has undertaken in this area,” including an executive order from the Biden administration supporting third-party and consumer repair work. “We do think that this exemption will be useful and will help to facilitate that type of activity.” Other agencies — as well as state and federal lawmakers — have their own right to repair policies on the table. The Federal Trade Commission, for instance, has pledged to fight business practices that lockout independent repair shops. This copyright rulemaking doesn’t address those practices, but it helps lift a legal threat hanging over technicians and consumers. Right to repair expansion sits alongside several other changes. The Copyright Office nixed some requests to expand an exemption for reproducing clips of movies and TV shows, for instance, but it supplemented the categories of people who can do this for educational use, covering education staff beyond faculty members. The rule extends exemptions for converting video to accessible formats for people with disabilities, letting educators add subtitles or audio captions before someone requests an accessible version as long as they reasonably expect it will be needed. Video game players with disabilities can also circumvent systems that prevent them from using nonstandard input devices on computers, although the exemptions don’t add some broader requested accessibility protections. Meanwhile, archival libraries should be able to create copies of deteriorating disc-based media if they can’t find a replacement copy elsewhere. (The office rejected requests that people be able to break copy protection to shift media into different formats, however.) The report expands the language of an exemption for security researchers as well. The new policy loosens a 2015 exemption granting access to medical device data, rewording it to cover devices that aren’t implanted, and letting patients authorize third parties to access it, although some methods of access could still violate liability laws. It also grants jailbreaking exceptions for video streaming devices like the Apple TV and for routers and other networking hardware, as long as it’s not done to access pirated media. Section 1201 remains a controversial (and, some critics contend, unconstitutional) piece of the DMCA. It’s intended to prevent breaking digital rights management software that protects copyrighted media, but as software becomes an increasingly important part of basic consumer devices, it’s cast a legal pall over myriad non-piracy-related activities. The renewal cycle also means that educators, security researchers, repair technicians, and others will go through this process again in a few years — but for now, they’ve seen some welcome changes. https://g7conet.com/news_single/us-copyright-office-seeks-to-expand-legal-shield-for-fixing-digital-devices

It’s official: an all-electric Range Rover is going to arrive in 2024. What’s more Land Rover has announced plans for another five all-electric vehicles over the next five years. And by the end of the decade, every one of the company’s cars will have an all-electric variant. All this means the people who moved to the country and decided they needed a 4x4 behemoth to dominate the country roads, will be able to do so in a less noisy and polluting fashion. This announcement was made as Land Rover unveiled the 2022 Range Rover, which is itself built on a new flexible architecture that will form the basis of future Land Rover cars — including hybrids and all-electric models. Unfortunately, we don’t know a great deal about the upcoming EV. Originally it was expected to share its underpinnings with the all-electric Jaguar XJ, but that has since been canceled and it’s not entirely clear what the future holds. However, the 2024 Range Rover EV will aim to compete with other SUVs on the market, including the BMW iX and the Mercedes EQS SUV, though isn’t likely to feature a design that’s hugely different from an ICE-powered Range Rover you’d see on the roads right now. After all, Land Rover is keeping internal combustion engines around for quite some time. The goal is for its all-electric sales to hit 60% by 2030, rather than announcing a definite end death date for its ICE models. Interestingly, hydrogen may also be on the cards, with Land Rover program director Nick Miller telling Autocar that the architecture can support a hydrogen powertrain. Though given the obvious issues of there being almost zero hydrogen infrastructure, we’ll have to wait and see how likely that will be. Still, we can use the 2022 Range Rover, which will launch with a mild-hybrid variant followed by a plug-in hybrid model in 2023, to speculate as to what the electric Range Rover might have to offer. The 2022 model packs in wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad in the center console, and an infotainment system that is fully integrated with Amazon’s Alexa. That means not only do you have everything Alexa can do, including read your news or control your smart home, you are also able to use the voice assistant to control the inner workings of your car. That infotainment system will also feature a lot of screen space, with a 13.1-inch curved display with haptic feedback and a 13.7-inch driver display. There’s also an independent 11.4-inch rear infotainment display, and all screens will offer HDMI input and Wi-Fi — provided you connect them to a hotspot. An additional 8-inch touch control panel is also an option, offering controls for various seat functions should you want them. As decadent and luxurious as that all sounds, the haptic feedback is particularly noteworthy. since it means you get some sort of confirmation when you’ve done something on the touchscreen. It’s not going to be as good as a button, no touchscreen ever will be, but it could be better than the glossy unresponsive screens you see in cars at the moment. The 2022 Range Rover also comes with new electrical vehicle architecture that allows wireless communication. In other words, it can receive over-the-air updates to gain new features or improve existing ones. It’ll likely be a while before we find out much more about the Range Rover EV. But if Land Rover’s current plans are anything to go by it’s going to shape up to be one fancy car. We just have to hope it’ll come with the range to complement everything. https://g7conet.com/news_single/an-all-electric-range-rover-is-coming-in-2024-mdash-and-five-more-will-follow

Many nonfungible token marketplaces are allowing digital collectors to identify artwork based on the wallet address of the creator through a partnership with software giant Adobe. In an Oct. 26 announcement, Adobe said it would be partnering with the major nonfungible token, or NFT, marketplaces including OpenSea, KnownOrigin, and SuperRare to allow users to verify the authenticity of the digital content. Adobe’s Content Credentials can add an NFT creator’s wallet address and social media information to the metadata of tokens listed on the marketplace. “This partnership furthers our commitment to empowering users with more tools as we collectively rethink how we transfer digital goods on the internet,” said an OpenSea spokesperson. “Working in tandem with market leaders like Adobe and the growing NFT community, we will keep providing features to increase trust and transparency across the metaverse.” The feature will still seemingly have the option for NFT creators to remain pseudonymous, with them choosing to display crypto addresses linked to their online identity or full real social media profiles. Rarible, another marketplace offering Adobe’s digital verification system, said the feature would help “fight misinformation with attribution and verifiable truth of the content.” According to data from DappRadar, OpenSea is the largest NFT marketplace by daily trading volume, reported as more than $50 million at the time of publication. SuperRare, Rarible, and KnownOrigin rank far below with roughly $1 million, $328,000, and $42,000 daily trading volume, respectively. The platform recently faced criticism from many in the crypto space after OpenSea head of product Nate Chastain was accused of pumping up the prices of certain NFTs he was able to feature on the homepage and then sell. OpenSea said its employees are barred from buying and selling collections that are being featured on the platform. https://g7conet.com/news_single/adobe-offers-users-the-ability-to-verify-nft-marketplace-creations-through-metadata
