Stressed out by study? Unsure of where to begin? Check out our guide which will show you study skills and techniques to help you make the most of your exam study.
It's that time of year, exams are near and final assignments are due! We have seen plenty of highly focused and slightly stressed students in the Henry Grunfeld Library working on their final assignments and preparing for exams.

If you are feeling the pressure at the moment, remember, this is normal. The period leading up to examinations is one of the most common pressure points of the academic year, according to Dorothy Bedford and Elizabeth Wilson, authors of Study skills for foundation degrees (2013).

Here are some quick tips from Bedford and Wilson (2013) for exam preparation:

• Draw up a revision timetable, allocating topics to days but building in some flexibility.

• Work through questions from past papers if they are available. After revising a topic, answer a question on it, and then compare your answer to your notes.

• The night before the exam, it is important you are prepared and well-rested. Have your clothes and equipment ready the night before the exam so you are not running around in a panic. Get some sleep, cramming facts the night before an exam is counter-productive.

On the day of the exam, remember to have something to eat before leaving home. You may be nervous but eating is important so you are able to perform as well as possible.

Once the exam is over, try to avoid post-mortem discussions with other students if you are feeling anxious. Just tell yourself you have done the best you can at this stage, and move on.

For more information about how to handle exams and revision, I strongly recommend Bedford and Wilson's (2013) book. It has lots of tips on coping with exams and managing stress.

She was assigned to teach 80 students at Sydney's Unique International College, but hairdressing teacher Penny Martin never heard from any of them, a court has heard.

They were some of the more than 2000 students that Unique International College recruited to its campus in Granville, while the college accrued more than $57 million in taxpayer funding.

On Wednesday, the college and its owner, Amarjit Singh, faced the Federal Court on a charge of unconscionable conduct in the first of a series of trials as the government attempts to reclaim more than $420 million in taxpayer funding from the vocational education sector.

The college is accused of recruiting disabled, illiterate students from Aboriginal missions and putting them into student debt worth tens of thousands of dollars through promises of free laptops.

Acting for the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, Norman O'Bryan, SC, alleged that Mr Singh, also known as Amarjit Khela, pursued the exponential growth of the college "in order to maximise profitability for him and his family."
Unique College and Mr Singh deny the allegations and claim the college was operating a legitimate business.

The court heard that when Ms Martin sent emails to her 80 online students who had been enrolled in a Diploma of Salon Management courses costing up to $20,000, she not only received no replies, but 40 were bouncebacks from non-existent email addresses. "It was bamboozling me," said Ms Martin. "Eighty students is a lot, it's like sheep-dogging your sheep." Ms Martin said she was paid $5 per "generic welfare email" she sent to the students up to 10 times over a six-week period.

Court documents reveal that of the 440 students who enrolled in online courses with the college 100 kilometres from its Granville headquarters, 306 never logged on to the portal.
"When you don't see any students, you are concerned," said Ms Martin.

When she spoke to Mr Singh, he allegedly told her the college was facing financial difficulties, before confiding in her that he wanted to write a script for a Bollywood movie. Mr Singh denies speaking with Ms Martin about the college finances.
In an email tendered to court, Unique's course co-ordinator responded quickly to Ms Martin's query. "Anyways don't worry about failure notices, you keep sending emails to students," the email said.

Ms Martin told the court that when she was invited to attend a class in person she found a class of 60-year-old Filipinos doing a course in salon management. "One had a hip replacement and a walking stick," she told the court. "A lot of the computers in the college did not work, a lot of things were broken."

Representing Mr Singh, David Pritchard, SC, said that the college was going through a transition from one IT student management system to another at the time of Ms Martin's employment from November 2014 to February 2015. The new system would enable students to interact with the college without having to go through a teacher.

"There was a fundamental change in the way the company deals with students," he said. "The successful implementation meant there would be less supervisors needed at Unique. Bounce-backs were a part of a teething process."
The hearing continues on Thursday.

A group of students from St Andrew’s International High School (Saints) who competed against thousands of others from around the globe to emerge among the world’s top achievers in their Pearson Edexcel and BTEC qualifications have earned international recognition for their academic achievements.

The Outstanding Pearson Learner Awards recognise outstanding learners as those who have achieved A or A+ equivalent grades in their qualification and where they are the top performing student in that particular examination globally, regionally or in their country.

The ceremony which was recently held at the University of Zambia (UNZA) in Lusaka, also saw top performing students from University of Zambia – School of Natural Sciences, David Daunda Technical High School and Chengelo School being issued with awards:

Saint Andrews International High School achieved 10 awards for the Highest Mark in Africa for Edexcel examinations, as well as 6 BTEC Outstanding Learner Awards for students who achieved Distinction for every unit of their qualification.

Two Saints learners were issued with two awards each, namely; Alden Zachary Boby – Highest Mark in Africa for Edexcel GCSE Information & Communication Technology and Edexcel GCSE Design & Technology: Resistant Materials Technology and Connor Murphy – Outstanding Learner Award for BTEC Level 3 National Subsidiary Diploma in Travel and Tourism and BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Business

Peter Stubbs, Head of Year 12 and BTEC Quality Manager at Saint Andrews, attended the event in Zambia to accept the awards of behalf of the students who were unable to travel due to examinations. The students’ acceptance speeches were shown via video at the event, with learners describing what the awards meant to them and how their Pearson qualifications have given them the skills necessary for future success in both university and the world of work.

Business / Indian International Student Jailed For Scamming Australians by g8662: 6:41pm On Jun 13, 2016

His student visa has expired and he will be deported to India once he is out of jail.

22-year-old Pratik Hasmukh Davariya, who arrived in Australia as an international student was found guilty last month for scamming Australian residents. Today, Judge sentenced him for period of 1 year with a non-parole period of nine months.

He was arrested in August 2015 from the South Australian Riverland for being part of a scam that threatened Australians for supposedly unpaid taxes.

In May this year, Pratik pleaded guilty to nine counts of involvement in money laundering at a hearing in Adelaide Magistrates Court.

The Magistrate today jailed Davariya for just over a year with a nine-month non-parole period, but due to time spent in custody, Davariya will be eligible for release almost immediately.

The court heard that Pratik was keen to buy a car after he arrived in Australia on a student visa.

When he shared this with a friend in India, he was put in touch with another contact, who told Davariya that his bank account could be used to transfer money offshore to India and Thailand.

Davariya was unaware that these contacts were tax scammers who were calling Australian residents, claiming to be from Australian Taxation Office and threatening people with fines of up to $125,000, or jail, for supposedly unpaid taxes.

This fraud yielded them $43,905 out of which Davariya received about $2000 for his role, the court heard.

Magistrate Paul Bennett said the student had thought the money was from a gambling syndicate, so knew it to be "fishy".

"I accept you did not devise the scam or make the phone calls," the magistrate said.

"Whilst you had a lesser role, your role was no doubt critical. The scam you assisted used intimidation and, like all scams, preyed on the vulnerable."

The Magistrate today jailed Davariya for just over a year with a nine-month non-parole period, but due to time spent in custody, Davariya will be eligible for release almost immediately.

However Davariya's student visa has expired. He will now be taken into immigration detention and is likely to be deported once freed from jail.

At least 25 Indian students have been asked to return to India or find placement in other schools after Western Kentucky University in US told them that they did not meet the admission standards of the varsity.

The New York Times has reported that 60 Indian students were enrolled for the University’s Computer Science programme in January this year.

They were given ‘on-the-spot’ admissions by international recruiters in India but the chairman of the WKU’s computer science program, James Gary found that ‘almost 40’ of those students did not have required skills to get admission.

Gary said permitting the students to continue in the programme would "be throwing good money after bad" because they were unable to write computer programmes, a necessary part of the curriculum and a skill that US schools teach to undergraduates.

"If they come out of here without the ability to write programmes, that's embarrassing to my department," Gary said, explaining why the university could not permit them to continue.

Out of the 60 students, 35 may be allowed to stay but 25 ‘must leave’.

NYTimes reported that the University had hired international recruiters to lift enrolment and revenue in the wake of deep state budget cuts.

But after this, the university in a statement said it had altered its international recruitment efforts in India. The University will now send its own people from the Computer Science department to meet with students before offering admissions.

The chairman of the Indian Student Association at Western Kentucky University, Aditya Sharma told NYTimes, "I definitely feel badly for these students. They've come so far. They've invested money into it."

But he admitted that some of the students had adopted what he called a "casual" approach to their studies. "They could not meet their GPA (grade point average), so the university had to take this decision."

What matters is that you didn’t get an F.

As long as you have a secondary high school certificate that is valid and accredited in your country or internationally, you can use it to apply for admission and scholarship to study at top-ranking universities in Europe.
