SORRY GUYS, LONG POST ALERT

Apologies for mentioning so many people. It's just that I would appreciate it if multiple people could provide me with their insights and advice on my career path. I am open to hearing from a variety of perspectives and am grateful for any input that can help me make an informed decision about my future in the field of civil engineering. I understand that everyone's experiences and opinions may differ, and I am happy to gain a comprehensive understanding of the pros and cons of both structural engineering and highway engineering. Thank you in advance for your help and I look forward to reading your responses.

Also, let's try and revive this thread!

HERE GOES

I am currently in my final year of studying Civil Engineering, and in my second semester. During the year, I have participated in several career fairs and lectures organised by the university. Until recently, I was certain that I wanted to become a Structural Engineer. This is mainly due to the fact that we have taken a module dedicated to Structures every year, compared to other modules that we have only taken for a single year or semester and then moved on from.

In my first year, I obtained my highest score in the Structure Module we took. The content of the module was mainly mechanics, with a brief introduction to beams, cross-section properties of steel, frames, trusses etc. In my second year, I obtained my highest score in Design of Elements, where we focused mainly on designing steel and concrete slabs and columns. This was where I fell in love with Structural Engineering. As a result, when I applied for internship opportunities, I only applied to Structural Engineering firms. I was fortunate to be selected as the sole intern at a small firm but it was only on for 6 weeks. It was a surreal experience as it involved applying the knowledge I had gained in modules such as Structures, BIM & Design, and Design of Elements. During my training, I struggled with speed when performing calculations and writing reports, but by the last week, I had made significant improvement.

As I entered my third year of university studying Civil Engineering, I was excited to discover Highway Engineering for the first time. Through the coursework we’d just submitted at the start of the year, I learned about designing, constructing, and maintaining roads and found that I truly enjoyed the tasks. The assignment was for us to design a new road joining an existing one, we used guidelines specific to the UK and the council, similar to using Eurocode to design structural elements. We determine specifications like design traffic, geometrical design, structural design, pavement, and foundation design. We also used Civil 3D—similar to how BIM is used in structural design of buildings—for structural analysis of the road. The project was a great experience, and executing it with my friends made me realise that there was more to Civil Engineering practice than just Structural Engineering.

This new realisation has put me in a tough spot, particularly with the career programs our university has been organising. I've been considering changing my LinkedIn bio to reflect my interest in Highway Engineering instead of just Structural Engineering and Designing. The main reason for my predicament is that I only plan to work in the UK for about 10 years. My ultimate goal is to take my skills back to Nigeria and find a good job in a multinational company or big firm, where I will be valued for my expertise and not necessarily have to start my own company right away.

I have reservations about the prevalence of structural engineering positions in Nigeria as it is here. In the UK, it is not legal for contractors to build without the approval of a structural engineer or other qualified professional in cases where building regulations require it. This applies to both new construction and major renovations of existing buildings. Whereas in Nigeria, I am not sure if contractors even value the input of structural engineers. In 2021, luxury housing estate developer Femi Osibona, who died in a 21-storey building collapse his company was building, was reported to have disregarded the advice of structural and electrical engineers. He also complained about how they love to overestimate materials needed for projects. As a matter of fact, a letter was discovered from the structural engineering firm hired for the project, long before the building crashed, where they informed Femi and his company of their wish to part ways due to Femi’s company’s deviation from their original plans.

On the other hand, road construction projects are ongoing throughout Nigeria, including my village. I am aware that many of our roads are not designed for safe use by all types of commuters, including cars, commercial buses, emergency services, and pedestrians. To address this, there is a need for measures such as installing signals for pedestrians to cross safely, creating dedicated bus lanes, and dedicating lanes for cyclists. These needs are not limited to rural areas, as major roads in metropolitan cities like Abuja and Lagos also have unshared roads. And this is in addition to new roads that must be built or dilapidated ones that will be repaired. I think I’ll stop here for now, before I write a novel! Haha.

As I move forward in my career, I would like to seek guidance from experienced professionals in both Structural Engineering and Highway Engineering. I am eager to learn more about the opportunities and challenges in each field, as well as the potential for growth and development in each area. If you have any advice or insights to share, I would be grateful to hear from you.

Good morning guys. Hope everyone is okay? I was wondering, apart from NHS Travel pass, if I'm going to naija, what else do I need to have to be admitted on board?

Skyscanner or bravofly. Also flights are cheaper between Monday and Thursday, please try and avoid school holidays while booking your flight as it is always the most expensive .

Thanks ma'am smiley

Go to skyscanner.net and search for flights. Once you find what suits you, go to the airline website and book, hopefully the prices will be the same or you can search using "google flights".

Thanks a lot. I appreciate

best bet is to book tickets directly from the airline, the other apps/websites will strip all the essentials out- might be 1 luggage or crazy stop over.
Book well in advance- prices are generally high now- covid recovery, russia-ukr, inflation

Thank you boss

Good morning Nairalanders and happy new year to all.

Please I need help on how to end this plague called pimples, I don't know the cause of it, I've tried many cream or soap since 2017 and it's not going, instead it's keep coming back. Since last year the kind of it that come to my face every week is like ball, big and round and it's gives me headache join. Pimples giving me headache and not work, too bad. Right now all my chicks is like someone they give blow.. Please if there's anyone that knows what I would use to end it please I'd appreciate your help and response.

LOL for those that would say, that " too much of lashing caused it grin, please, I've not lashed anyone for 4 to 5 years now. And I'm not planning either this year. cheesy

Pics was yesterday night.

As someone who's been in the struggle for 10+ years and only just started making significant progress last year. My advice is to get the ffg products:

- neutrogena Rapid Clear 2-in-1 fight & fade toner. Use twice a day. This kills the acne and fights darkened spots.
- Dr Rashel Vitamin C Brightening and Anti-Aging face serum. Use twice a day. This combats your spots, even aged ones.

Those two products can be applied simultaneously to your face, and they are just enough to fight and prevent present and future breakouts.

If you have uneven skin due to lots of dark spots, you can buy A.M. Glow. Apply once a day on affected areas and track your progress. You don't want to overuse this product. Trust me bro, it works wonders.

Now I'll recommend you don't do the ffg ever again as the might render all your efforts abortive.

- don't use the same towel to dry your body and face
- don't rub body soap on your face. You can get one of the neutrogena facial scrubs for your face or just get a cheap one.
- never bath with dirty water. If you're the type who uses overhead showers, please stop. Fetch water in a bucket and disinfect with Dettol. If that impossible for you, avoid letting water touch your face in bath and wash your face separately with aby applying a scrub and rinse off with sachet/bottle water.

I dont think so. I think oyster cards only work in London.

Alright brother. I'll do more research on that. I know Oyster works in some parts of Kent, up to Dartford. But I don't know about Essex. I'll make my findings later today. Thanks again for your advice. Have a lovely day ahead

Hi, God bless your heart for doing this and hope you get a place soon.
But I note that your budget for those areas is rather small.
If any of your parents are non benefit, maybe you shouldn't mention it.
And i think the person who's working and earning the most should be the one approaching the agents for letting. Usually, most home owners are investors ad they want the highest guarantee that they'll receive their rent every month as at when due.

On the other hand, have you had a look at neighbouring towns to London. There are a lot of towns in Essex that boarder London and easy commute into London. Chelmsford is a very good one and its just a 30mins ride on the train to central London.

Goodluck.

Thank you for your response. I think we ticked all the other boxes, as we're all non-smokers *coughs* grin, non-pet owners and not on benefit. It's just this income issue. I've seen several houses in the areas I listed on zoopla and right move but it seems the landlords are wary of the income stated. And I don't want to lie as even though I'm not sure how these agencies operate, I know they'll verify my parents earnings before they deem us fit to rent the house. I'll check Essex like you've said. Can you confirm if Essex buses and trains use oyster payments please?

Unfortunately, it's all bordering around affordability......

No landlord wants to be bothering the court system with section 21's........

Kent is a lively and lovely county to reside.......

Thanks for your response. Yes it is true that Kent is lively and lovely to reside, even if you work in London but only for people who drive. A return ticket form where I live in Kent to my uni daily is £33. So we just have to move.

Good day everyone. Sorry I mentioned so many people, I'm facing a dire situation and need all the advice I can get. My parents and I are trying to move from Kent to London for my easy transportation to uni and for better job prospects for my dad. In the past 2 weeks, I've tried websites like Rightmove, Zoopla and co, got in touch with several housing agents and all. But all my efforts have proven abortive. Usually, they collect my details and ask me to wait for the landlord's response, but they never give me feedback. Everytime I've called back, I'm told the house is off the market.

I thought I got lucky about 2 weeks ago when one of the agents connected me and the landlord of a beautiful 2 bedroom house who had recently left his house in Mottingham and England altogether for a job opportunity in Philippines last Monday. I was booked to come have a tour of the house with a housesitter stationed in the house. Right in the course of the tour, I confirmed our interest. I tried my best not to sound too desperate sha, but the lady advised that I inform the landlord as it was really his decision to make. Again, I did this on the spot via whatsapp but I didn't get an immediate response. The reply didn't come until the following day, and that was when the landlord gave me the sad news about a couple who had come to view the house a day before me signifying their interest and paying the deposit.

Regarding the other agents who've been ghosting me, I'm thinking the major factor dissuading them is the combined earnings of my parents which i about £33,480 per annum. I also earn money but due to my status as a student and the fact that I only worked about 10 weeks (stayed a couple days w/o work in between) during the holiday, I didn't declare myself as employed. Though I usually receive funds into my bank account on a monthly basis (Please note that I have no paycheck explaining how this money was earned).

My dad expressed his pessimism about this agency approach and suggested that we liase with friends and relatives to discuss with people they know. This he did back in April when we needed a house desperately, but nothing was forthcoming and we had to settle for this house situated in la la land. After 2 weeks of seraching and coming up with nothing, I'm honestly at my wits end

What we're searching for is a 2 Bedroom house/apartment in the ffg areas: Woolwich Arsenal, Eltham, Mottingham, Camberwell, Cartford, Croydon, Dagenham etc. The house could be around the range of 1,050 - 1,200 pcm. If it's unfurnished, there's no wahala. If it's furnished, that's even better. Gas-central heating is preferred as winter is coming. Please if you're reading this and you have any advise for me regarding the best way to approach this, kindly quote me with your advice. if you also know someone who has a 2 bedroom apartment/house/flat for let, kindly give me a shout here so I can find the best way to reach you since the mail attached to this account is no longer functional.

I taught English at GCSE level for many years with a Nigerian degree in English Lang and Lit and teaching experience from home. It's not impossible. She will need a UK teaching qualification though so her best bet will be to come over and find work in allied teaching - I used to work with Crisis (specifically with women from BAME backgrounds) teaching them basic reading and writing skills - the pay was very good but emotionally hard work. I also completed my teaching practice through them and a college so remained in full time work and got 1 day off to teach English to 17 year olds at Matthew Boulton College and got QTS that way.

Ma'am can I please pm you? Pleeeease.

Chief,

The UK is lot Nigeria where everything is about a degree. What skills does she have that she can sell in the UK. What is she interested in? A lot of people come here and change career. They do not necessarily practise what they studied in school. The UK is about what you have to offer.

Some handymen I know make more than se of us that went to school and put on shirt and tie to go the office. I recently got some job done and I was telling my wife that It would have coste less than half of what I paid if I brought awbosy from Nigeria, paid visa and airline ticket, hotel bill and pay the person handsomely for a two week job.

Can she teach math, network look for people who need tutoring, charge them. The student makes good grades in their faces, word spreads, you get more clients, you make your money. If it is hair making; do home service, etc.

First of all minder change. At my age (I no old po) I have started learning something new to help improve my skills.

Bossman, you make some salient points. I know this babe like the back of my hand and I know she will excel well if she gets here but she wants what she wants, and that's beside the point anyway. The main issue here is how to get her here. So far, majority of the house says she should come as a dependent.

With her BA English plus British teaching experience, I am sure GTCS won't register her. STEM is the only discipline with uniformity in curriculum. I have some people from Teaching English in Nigeria is completely different from UK curriculum. This is our assessment period and I saw some of the exams that the students are writing.
My advice is for her to apply as your dependant and come here first, then apply for jobs like care assistant to start with.
She can later look at Assessment Only route to QTS in England or TQPR route to GTCS in Scotland to be retrained as an English Teacher.

Thank you soooo much for this. This was exactly my argument, only STEM teachers are in demand here. I think I mentioned that in one of my replies to the good people that responded to me earlier. I'm going to copy-paste your advise verbatim for her and we will discuss how to go about the matter. Thanks again ma'am
