Human rights lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has said social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has replaced the judiciary as the hope of the common man in Nigeria.

Farotimi stated this in a video uploaded on YouTube on Saturday while reacting to the controversy surrounding VeryDarkMan’s invitation to the Nigerian Bar Association’s 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt.

According to him, the emergence and growing influence of VeryDarkMan reflect the failure of Nigeria’s judicial system to deliver justice to ordinary citizens.

Farotimi said a society with a functional police and judicial system would not tolerate the emergence of individuals like VeryDarkMan as alternative sources of justice.

“A society that has law and order, that is ruled by law, that has a functional police system, a functional court system, would not even tolerate the presence or existence of a VDM. VDM is the life indictment of a judicial system that is essentially peopled by crooks in the place of jurists. That’s what VDM is.

“It represents a type, a type that has been tolerated, mollified because of the failure of the system.”

He likened VeryDarkMan to a mirror reflecting the failures of Nigerian society, saying attacking the activist would not solve the problems responsible for his growing influence.

“The reality is that you are the one who has to do something to fix the image in the mirror. VDM is merely the image in your mirror. The society you have built requires VDM to find justice.

“It’s easier to find justice through the types and likes of VDM than through your courts. They say the judiciary is the last hope of the common man. Nah, lie.

“VDM has become the last hope of the common man in the society that you built. Shame on all of you. And not just the lawyers or the judges, but the entire society that has made this possible.”

Farotimi warned that more personalities like VeryDarkMan could emerge if the judiciary and other institutions failed to address the grievances of Nigerians.
“The society you built requires VDM to do justice. Very soon there will be multiplicities of VDM in the society that you have built. And if you have not noticed, there are already copycat VDMs springing up.

“Because the society requires VDM to find justice. How much of a shameful society have we built? Or shall I say shameless society?”

He described VeryDarkMan’s emergence as a warning sign of the breakdown of the country’s institutions.

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, on Tuesday led an urgent federal intervention on the congested Benin-Agbor-Asaba Expressway following President Bola Tinubu’s order to ease the hardship faced by stranded motorists.

Umahi’s arrival in Edo State was disclosed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, who shared a video of the minister’s on-site inspection on his official X handle.

“Umahi arrives in Benin, Edo State, to address the congestion on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba Road,” Nwaze posted, adding in a subsequent update, “Umahi arrives Benin-Agbor-Asaba Road to resolve issues surrounding the road, which was handed over to concessionaire on PPP Basis since 2025.”

In an official press statement issued on Tuesday, Nwaze confirmed that Tinubu ordered immediate corrective measures on both the Benin-Agbor-Asaba axis and the deplorable Ifaki-Kabba-Ado Ekiti road spanning Ekiti and Kogi States.

To execute the directive, Umahi reportedly deployed the Minister of State for Works alongside ministry officials to commence remedial works on the Ekiti-Kogi corridor.

“While the intervention team moved into Ekiti and Kogi States, Umahi himself headed to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees, to initiate a similar coordinated intervention on the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road.

“The Benin meeting is expected to bring together key stakeholders, including representatives of the Edo and Delta State Governments and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), with the aim of finding immediate solutions to the challenges confronting motorists on the strategic corridor,” the statement partly read.
Nwaze also noted that Umahi took responsibility for the unfortunate situation on the affected roads and apologised to commuters who have been stranded or delayed for several hours and days.

“He assured road users that the Federal Government’s response would go beyond temporary relief, with immediate measures being pursued alongside permanent solutions to restore the affected roads and improve their long-term reliability,” the statement concluded.

Umahi’s inspection comes days after several people were reported to have taken to the Benin-Agbor Bypass to protest the deplorable condition of the road and call for urgent repairs.

The Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Samuel Shekwolo, has warned residents who do not support the All Progressives Congress to leave the council ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Shekwolo made the comment in a video circulating on social media on Tuesday, in which he addressed his followers and constituents.

The council chairman said his position was informed by what he described as the developmental efforts of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in Kuje.

He said residents could not benefit from the administration’s interventions and subsequently vote against the APC at the 2027 elections.

“I have said in my area council, it’s either you are doing APC or leave the area council; I’m not hiding that. With confidence, I’m saying it.

“You know why, I cannot have President and Minister doing what they are doing and on the day of election, you will want to match me. It’s either you are with us, or you are out,” he said.

The remark has sparked concerns over the use of political rhetoric by public officials as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

The development comes against the backdrop of a recent controversy involving the senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, Francis Fadahunsi, who was criticised over comments concerning members of the Accord Party ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

In a video circulated on social media, Fadahunsi, who was addressing supporters of the APC in Ilesa, Osun State, was heard allegedly saying that any Accord member seen in Ilesa before the election would be killed.

The latest comments by the Kuje chairman have again drawn attention to the tone of political discourse ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly concerns that inflammatory statements by political leaders could heighten tension and undermine citizens’ freedom to choose their preferred political parties.

Its a fun filled morning as EKSUites reconvene to continue the
protest which they started yesterday as touching the issue of ” no
school fee, no lecture” policy of the school management.
Students were seen jubilating amidst a sound system of a DJ playing
music of different types like some songs of the Afro Legend Fela
Anikulapo Kuti among other. The DJ who also have a stand
mounted at the front of the school main gate surrounded by the
aggrieved students carrying placards.
The school gate as at now is still closed to all the staff and students
of the institution, as security personnel were on ground to curtail
students to maintain peace and order. As at yesterday evening, the
Management team met some of the students in a close door
meeting to dialogue on the issue of the policy of“ no school fee, no
lecture “. The report of the outcome of the meeting was that “every
students have been given just two weeks to source for their school
fees”.
Part of what led to this morning protest was that the issue of no
lecture , no school fee should be totally eradicatedm
