Politics / Gumi: Biafra & Oduduwa Agitators Are Miscreants Not Different From Boko Haram by galaxylauncher: 9:25am On Feb 07, 2021
Those Agitating For Biafra, Oduduwa Republics Are Miscreants Not Different From Boko Haram — Gumi

An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has described those agitating for Biafra and Oduduwa republics as miscreants akin to the Boko Haram sect terrorising the country.

There have been calls for secession in the various parts of the country over allegations of marginalisation.

But speaking in an interview with BBC Pidgin on Saturday, the cleric described such people as miscreants who should not be taken seriously.

Gumi claimed that Nigerians are committed to having a united country, noting that the opinions of a few people championing the division of the country should not be taken seriously.

He said: "I usually give an example of General Murtala Muhammed, the former head of state from Kano, that was assassinated by the Buka Suka Dimka-led group. He had a Yoruba wife. So, where do you want his children to go if the nation is divided? Are they going to be with the Yorubas or Hausas in the North?

"Look, let's forget these useless youths. They're no more different from these herdsmen. These people agitating for Oduduwa, Bifafra or Arewa are all the same group of people with Boko Haram.

"The majority of Nigerians want to stay with Nigeria. And if they are in doubt, let's have a referendum. Look at elections, for instance, millions of votes from all the states, whether from the All Progressives Congress or the Peoples Democratic Party. This means that Nigerians are ready to stay with a united Nigeria. That is an indirect referendum which shows that the people are ready.

"So, all these youths that are making noise, whether Abubakar Shekau of Boko Haram, Nnamdi Kanu of the Indigenous People of Biafra and their Oduduwa counterpart, they are just a tiny minority of Nigerians using ethnic, archaic and retrogressive sentiments to destabilise the nation.

"But l can vouch that Nigerians really want to stay together in peace, but in peace and equity. Not with any segment of Nigeria being cheated."

Gumi said the fact that Southern leaders are quiet over such calls showed that only those pursuing personal interests were advocating division of the country in the region.

He added: "I'm in Sokoto now, there are still many Igbo traders here who don't want to go back home, so why do you tell me they want Biafra? Biafra is a nuisance just like Boko Haram. You think every northerner is a Boko Haram? Most Nigerians don't want these ethnic or religious groups. They simply want peace and to live together as nation. If truly the Yorubas are agigating for Oduduwa, why are their leaders not talking about it? Why are Igbo leaders also not talking about Biafra?"

On the way forward, Gumi called on Yoruba and Igbo leaders to dialogue with those fuelling tension in their regions, adding that similar efforts are already ongoing in the North.

"What we expect is for Yoruba leaders and Igbo leaders to take care of their miscreants as we are handling herdsmen and Boko Haram which are miscreants in the North. Every leader should take the words to their people. Only the miscreants are fuelling this," he added.

Gumi also canvassed for an amnesty programme for bandits in the country, stating that such would make them stop their attacks on Nigerians.

The economic miracle of the United Arab Emirates is unrivalled and is now ranked among the secure and stable economies offering one of the most sought-after investment destinations on the planet.

The Gross Domestic Product, or GDP, of the nation leapt to Dh1,248 billion by the end of 2011 from Dh6.5 billion in 1971, and is on track to grow by four per cent in 2012 defying global headwinds.

Thanks to an aggressive diversification strategy envisioned by the leadership, oil that constituted 70 per cent of the UAE’s economy in 1971, currently accounts for just 29 per cent of the GDP.

“Concerted efforts to diversify the economy and a policy of openness adopted by the UAE’s leadership have been the prime drivers in establishing the UAE as the second-largest Arab economy,” says UAE Minister of Economy, Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri.

The country’s nominal GDP for the first time crossed the Dh1 trillion mark in 2010 and currently the GDP per capita is Dh174,000 per annum. According to forecast, the economy is on track to grow by four per cent in 2012 despite the headwinds posed by the eurozone woes and general bleak global prospects.

Over the past four decades, the value of the UAE’s foreign trade went up from Dh13 billion to Dh1,737 billion in 2011 while the share of non-oil sectors in GDP rose from 30 per cent to 71 per cent.

Politics / Amotekun Arrests Truckload Of Herdsmen Going To Ibarapa, Recovers 25 Guns by galaxylauncher: 10:50am On Jan 26, 2021
Operatives of the Oyo State chapter of the Western Nigeria Security Network, more commonly known as Amotekun, have intercepted a truck loaded with gunmen suspected to be herdsmen heading to Igangan community in the recently troubled Ibarapa area of the state.

The truck, with registration number TUR30ZY, is registered with Kebbi State and the Amotekun officials found 25 guns and 10 dogs in the truck alongside the suspects.

SaharaReporters was told that the suspects had been handed over to the police authorities in Ido for more profiling.

“The Oyo State Amotekun, Ido unit led by Gbenga Olanrewaju made the arrest. They are suspected herdsmen in possession of about 25 dane guns and 10 dogs. They have been handed over to the police for further interrogation,” an official said.

There has been unrest in Igangan in Ibarapa recently due to worsening insecurity - kidnappings and killings.

This escalated when a pan-Oduduwa nation agitator, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, more popularly known as Sunday Igboho, issued an ultimatum to Fulani herdsmen, believed to be behind the insecurity, to vacate the state.

Igboho himself on Sunday narrated how some criminals fired bullets at him at the Seriki Fulani of Igangan, Saliu Abdulkadir's place in Ibarapa but that they did not harm him.

Earlier on Friday, irate youths had also attacked the Seriki Fulani, after violence erupted in Igangan, Ibarapa, in the Fulani community, during which the houses and property of the Seriki Fulani, Abdulkadir, were burnt.

Abdulkadir had told SaharaReporters that he, his wives and children were sent out of the settlement, adding that 11 vehicles and houses were burnt in the process.

The Seriki had thereafter fled the community with his family, as aggrieved youths put fire to the settlement.

Igboho had ordered that the killer herdsmen ravaging the South-West should leave.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Ngozi Onadeko, had also visited the community, saying that Igboho’s visit truncated the “relative peace and calmness” being enjoyed in the Igangan community.

Onadeko had vowed to bring the masterminds of the attack on the Fulani community in Igangan to justice, reiterating that the security agencies would not watch while some criminal elements take the law into their own hands.

She had also promised that the arson and the breach of the peace which occurred at Igangan would be investigated to a logical conclusion.

Man pictured near edge of Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls before 350-foot death drop

A haunting photo shows a tourist stepping up to the edge of Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls — just moments before he plunged more than 350 feet to his death, according to local media.

Roy George Tinashe Dikinya, 40, was taking turns with his family to take photos from the top of the huge waterfall when he tumbled over the edge, witnesses told Zimbabwe’s Newsday.

“We were alerted by the woman’s scream and she told us that he had slipped and fallen,” one told the paper of Dikinya, who was wearing sandals and was clutching several things in his left hand in the photo.

“Because of the showers and the mist, we could not trace him after that,” the witness said.

Rescuers with the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority found body parts trapped at the bottom of the gorge, which is at least 350-feet high, the Chronicle said.

The body parts “are trapped between rocks,” the authority’s spokesman, Tinashe Farawo, told the paper.

“We haven’t been able to positively identify him because of the location where the body is trapped, but we are certain that it his body,” he said.

“Right now we are in communication with other security experts including the army to try and find ways of retrieving the body,” he said, with one option trying to use a military helicopter.

Government Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu sent his “sincere condolences” to the family of the tourist who is from Zimbabwe’s capital Harare, more than 400 miles from the falls, according to The Herald.

“This is a rare, tragic and unfortunate incident to be witnessed at the mighty Victoria Falls,” Ndlovu said, while promising “all necessary precautions will be taken to guard against recurrence of such an unfortunate incident.”

It is just the latest tragedy involving people taking photos from dangerous spots. Just weeks ago, a Brazilian man died after falling from a waterfall taking a selfie.
