10,000 Megawatts Not Realisable By December, Says Nebo Blueprint for private sector’s investment in transmission underway GOING by existing realities, the country’s goal of attaining 10,000 megawatts (mw) of electricity by December is not realisable, according to the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo. The minister spoke to reporters in Abuja on the goal set by his predecessors and some other government officials. But he said that something close to the figure would be realised in December, stressing that 10,000mw would be achieved by first quarter of 2014 based on a professional and realistic analysis of the sector. “As an engineer and knowing the realities on ground, we will achieve this by first quarter of 2014. We need time to achieve part of the target. We will get close to it, but the truth is that we cannot get 10,000mw by December,” he said. Meanwhile, the controversy trailing the Bureau of Public Enterprises’ (BPE) decision to sell the Enugu Distribution Company despite the existence of a 20-year pact with Aba Power Limited that ring-fenced the Aba Business Zone to the firm seems to have ended. This is because Nebo promised yesterday that government would respect the agreement. The Guardian had reported recently that efforts by the BPE to privatise the entire Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) despite the existence of a 20-year lease agreement which the Federal Government entered into with a private concern for the management of the Aba metropolis was creating a fresh concern over the privatisation programme of government. The Federal Government, the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA, as it was then known) and Aba Power Limited entered into a lease agreement on April 28, 2005 for the distribution of power to the ring-fenced residential and commercial consumers at Aba, Abia State. The contract covered Aba Business Unit and Ariaria Business Unit, both of which form part of Enugu Distribution Company (Enugu Disco). Following the agreement, the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in 2006 granted a licence to Aba Power Limited to distribute power within the ring-fence. On December 12, 2012, a group of chieftains under the umbrella of Ndigbo Lagos, led by Prof. Anya O. Anya, wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan asking him to respect the terms of the agreement with Aba Power Limited. The Federal Government went ahead on February 20, 2013 and signed an agreement with bid winners of the Enugu Distribution Company, Interstate Consortium. But in a swift reaction, Wole Olanipekun & Co on February 21, 2013 advised the general public to desist from any act, purchase or negotiation in respect of any offer to sell, lease, transfer any right in the Enugu Disco, which does not expressly exclude Aba and Ariaria Business Units. But responding to questions on what government was doing to resolve the impasse, Nebo told reporters: “Government intends to honour the agreement with Aba Power Limited for the ring-fenced Aba and Ariaria Business Units.” Reviewing the state of the power sector, the minister also called on Nigerians to exercise a little more patience with government as the power reform agenda would be executed. On the generation capability, he stressed: “Currently, installed available generation capacity has risen to 6,000mw. Peak generation is slightly above 4,500mw. We intend to add additional generation capacity of about 2,200mw from the NIPP projects (1,896mw), IPPs (292mw) and FGN legacy assets (514mw) before the end of 2013. “The Federal Government is also investing heavily to boost generation through large, medium and small hydros with a total capacity of over 4,234mw.” He said a $3.4 billion investment would be required to expand the transmission grid to be able to evacuate all the generated power. He said the ministry was collaborating with the Finance Ministry to work out a blueprint for private sector’s investment in transmission, stressing once again that the Transmission Company of Nigeria would not be sold to a private concern, but would remain a government-owned entity. New Political Group, APCN, Emerges A new twist has been added to the unfolding drama over the APC acronym, being claimed by three political associations. A new group claiming the acronym has emerged. Only this time, the group which also claims to be All Progressives Congress has written to the Independent National Electoral Commission seeking to add “Nigeria” to its acronym, APC. Our correspondent gathered in Abuja, on Friday that the group had no affiliation to the All Progressives Congress being promoted by the coalition of opposition political parties. SUNDAY PUNCH had on March 24, 2013 reported that the APC being promoted by opposition political parties was considering adding “N” (Nigeria) to its acronym since the African People’s Congress had taken INEC to court over its refusal to register it. But the new group will by its decision to add N to its name prevent the mega party from using it. In an advertorial published in a national daily on Friday, the new group wrote: “The below document (sic) are evidence (sic) of our ongoing registration process to register the All Progressive Congress as a political party which started over a month ago. “INEC in replying out ( sic) first letter advised us to change our acronym so that it will not conflict with the acronym of the African People’s Congress (APC) which at that time was the first to submit an application in compliance with the INEC letter to us and to avoid an acronym war with the African People’s Congress (APC), which has announced their decision to challenge INEC decision to deny them registration at the court in line with Section 76 of the Electoral Act, we have adjusted our earlier application to now read All Progressive Congress of Nigeria (ACPN).” Reacting to the development, the National Publicity Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Lai Mohammed, said the development was the handiwork of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. He explained that Nigerians were smart enough to read between the lines, adding that it was left for INEC to prove to the world the kind of umpire it was. Mohammed said, “It is all the handiwork of the Presidency and the PDP. But you see, this will be a test case for INEC because INEC refused to register UPGA on the grounds that it was too close to APGA now that INEC has notice of our intention to merge under the banner of APC, we will want to see if they will still register APCN, we are waiting.” Also speaking on the issue, National Publicity Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change, Rotimi Fashakin, said, “This is all part of the script we are talking about. What they are trying to do is to close whatever option which we may have should we decide to choose another name, this is clear political rascality. They are petrified at the progress of the merger. Jonathan has learnt from the grand patriarch of the PDP, General Olusegun Obasanjo. It is executive rascality. “ However, the Peoples Democratic Party dismissed the allegations levelled against it by the opposition. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh , said, “ My response is that over the years we have had people leaving PDP, we have never accused ACN, we have had people disagreeing with PDP, and we have had internal challenges and sometimes even minor crisis, we have never blamed opposition parties. “We do hope that when they start having their challenges and crisis they will not be blaming PDP. “We know there is still a storm coming when they are going to do their primaries. They will have storms, when they are having their congresses they will have storms, when it comes let them not blame PDP because it is normal with administering a large party. If they do not have the capacity or the competence to be at the helm of a party then they should stop making noise. It means Nigerians cannot trust them to superintend the economy of this country.” It will be recalled that hours after the African People’s Congress unveiled its logo and national secretariat in Abuja, the All Progressives Congress being promoted by opposition political parties insisted that the acronym, APC, remained its intellectual property and would not relinquish it. This is just as news emerged that another political association with a similar acronym, All Patriotic Citizens, had also applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission for registration as a political party. The African Peoples Congress and the All Progressives Congress had been laying claim to the acronym, APC, before the emergence of All Patriotic Citizens. http://primenewsnigeria.com/new-political-group-apcn-emerges/ |
i think we need more of this in all the six geo political zone in nigeria and also more training and re training on this should be on going. we spent a lot of money in getting medical care outside nigeria. our government should provide all necessary facilities that will definitely develop our health sector and nigeria as a whole. good one!!! |

kingdvd: A friend of mine just intruduced me to CNG (compressed Natural Gas) for my car and it saves you cost upto 70-80%.Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a fossil fuel substitute for gasoline (petrol), Diesel fuel, or propane/LPG. Although its combustion does produce greenhouse gases, it is a more environmentally clean alternative to those fuels, and it is much safer than other fuels in the event of a spill (natural gas is lighter than air, and disperses quickly when released). CNG may also be mixed with biogas, produced from landfills or wastewater, which doesn't increase the concentration of carbon in the atmosphere. CNG is made by compressing natural gas (which is mainly composed of methane [CH4]), to less than 1% of the volume it occupies at standard atmospheric pressure. It is stored and distributed in hard containers at a pressure of 200–248 bar (2900–3600 psi), usually in cylindrical or spherical shapes. CNG is used in traditional gasoline internal combustion engine cars that have been converted into bi-fuel vehicles (gasoline/CNG). Natural gas vehicles are increasingly used in the Asia-Pacific region (especially Pakistan[1] and the Indian capital of Delhi, and other large cities like Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chenai, etc. ), Latin America, Europe, and North America due to rising gasoline prices.[2] In response to high fuel prices and environmental concerns, CNG is starting to be used also in tuk-tuks and pickup trucks, transit and school buses, and trains. The cost of this conversion is a barrier for CNG use as fuel and explains why public transportation vehicles are early adopters, as they can amortize more quickly the money invested in the new (and usually cheaper) fuel. In spite of these circumstances the number of vehicles in the world that use CNG has grown steadily at a 30 percent annual rate. CNG's volumetric energy density is estimated to be 42% that of liquefied natural gas (because it is not liquefied), and 25% that of Diesel fuel. My Company is one of the three company federal government gave the go ahead to install, distribute and sale CNG across Nigeria. We are still in the process of installing all the facilities that will facilitate the distribution of the process across the nation. A car using petrol can use CNG by just install a cylinder and doing some little installation that will not affect the performance of your car. thank you. |

Please to be fear and just, let us examine all the states in Nigeria. focusing on Lagos state alone smell some foul play. if you guys are sincere in holding our leaders responsible in what ever they do, then i see no reasons why Lagos state alone will be on target. thelastPope: You are spewing absolute BS! You have goofed and you are trying hard to cover your poo. There is no hidden meaning anywhere in your post. It is very clear. If you cannot communicate in public, dont post! How can not budgeting be better than budgeting? So why aint Americans assuming their budgets since outright budgeting leads to corruption according to you? What kind of twisted accounting book are you reading? Budgeting is a standard practice that is not subject to your conjured ideology! For your imformation, go back to the previous page and see where entertainment was actually budgeted for in one of the LASG departments contrary to your fooolish position. New legislation is designed to help international graduate students in science and engineering to remain in the US after graduation. A new bill introduced to the Senate on Wednesday (May 16) will make it easier for international graduate students studying science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) to obtain jobs and become permanent residents after graduating. Known as the SMART Jobs Act, the bill proposes that foreign-born students are allowed to remain in the United States for a year after graduation, and, once employed full-time, undergo an expedited process to achieve permanent legal status. “Many of the world’s most talented young people come to the United States to obtain their masters or doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering and math,” according to the bill, which is sponsored by Tennessee Republican Lamar Alexander and Chris Coons, a Democrat of Delaware. “Too many of those students are then forced to leave the United States to pursue their ideas and innovations elsewhere because of an outdated immigration system that hasn’t adapted to the modern global economy.” To me this is another Brain-drain disguise? http://the-scientist.com/2012/05/18/a-new-international-student-visa/ |
