SportsWe Can’t Win All The Time, Unhappy Guardiola Says by Gbgists(op): 6:52am On Sep 15, 2019
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola shrugged off his team’s shock 3-2 defeat by newly-promoted Norwich City in the English Premier League (EPL) on Saturday with a direct message

He said his team simply could not be expected to win every week.

Guardiola’s team beat Liverpool to the title by a solitary point last season after winning their last 14 games. But after five games of this season, they already trail Juergen Klopp’s side by five points. “The people cannot expect us to win or pick up 100 points all the time. We’re going to recover now and come back,” said Guardiola after the loss at Carrow Road. Manchester City won 32 of 38 games last season, losing only twice and they had not suffered a league defeat since their 2-1 reverse to Newcastle United on January 29. The prior season, Manchester City achieved a record 100 points, losing just two matches in the entire campaign and finishing 19 points clear at the top. “Sometimes games like this happen —- we had our chances to score but didn’t. So, congratulations to Norwich,” said the Spaniard, who felt the scoreline didn’t reflect the balance of the game. Manchester City, as usual, dominated possession with 69 per cent of the ball and they had eight shots on target —– while Norwich scored from all three of their efforts on goal. “It is football —- we had many opportunities today. They had three or four and scored three goals,” he added. “The first one was a set-piece we didn’t defend, the second we were caught on the counter-attack and the third came from a mistake. “But we know what we are as a team, we know what we have done and we know what we are going to do.”

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Sokoto Zonal Office, says it has arrested Mr Abdullahi Sa’idu, the Director-General of Sokoto Marshall Agency, over alleged diversion of workers salaries to the tune of N10 million

A statement issued by EFCC spokesman, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, made available to newsmen by the commission’s Sokoto Zonal Office, on Saturday in Sokoto, said that the director-general was arrested along side the agency’s Accountant, Mr Bashar Dodo-Iya, on Sept. 13. The statement said that the arrest was as a result of a petition jointly signed and presented to the commission by 39 workers of the Agency, alleging that their three months salaries are being withheld without any reason.

They further alleged that the suspects refused to pay their salaries and diverted the money for their personal use, and all efforts made to get their salaries paid, proved abortive. “However, a preliminary investigation revealed that, the two conspired and diverted about N10 million funds meant for the Marshalls’ salaries,” it said. It added that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations were

FoodFarmers To Get More Support From Rural Banks by Gbgists(op): 9:12am On Sep 10, 2019
Twenty-four rural and community bank managers across Ghana have pledged their commitment to offering credit facilities to farmers with Warehouse Receipts from certified warehouses.

The bank managers also indicated that giving more loans to the farmers will enable them to increase their agricultural portfolios while supporting farmers to produce more food to expand their respective local economies.

The bankers made this commitment at a training workshop in Kumasi organized by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) - a member of the World Bank Group, with financial support from the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). The workshop was aimed at creating awareness on the IFC's WRS project and the various risk mitigation measures to encourage agribusiness financing by the financial institutions.

This financial assistance will empower smallholder farmers to buy more agricultural inputs, plough more acreage and produce more grains thereby improving the country's food security as well as financial wellbeing of the farmers.

CelebritiesTrump Attacks John Legend And ‘his Filthy Mouthed Wife,’ Chrissy Teigen by Gbgists(op): 6:55am On Sep 10, 2019
The Twitterverse lit up Monday morning over model Chrissy Teigen's response to an attack from US President Donald Trump, an exchange that was heated even by the standards of his routine social media fights.

The spat began when the President, apparently venting about a town hall on criminal justice reform that aired on MSNBC Sunday night, tweeted that he and other Republicans should be getting more credit for signing the First Step Act into law.

The legislation, signed back in December, includes measures that allows thousands of federal inmates to leave prison earlier than they otherwise would have, among other things.

"I SIGNED IT INTO LAW, no one else did, & Republicans deserve much credit. But now that it is passed, people that had virtually nothing to do with it are taking the praise," the President tweeted late Sunday night.

Then Trump went after singer and activist John Legend (who appeared in the MSNBC town hall) and his wife Teigen. "Guys like boring musician [johnlegend], and his filthy mouthed wife, are talking now about how great it is - but I didn't see them around when we needed help getting it passed," the President wrote.

Teigen fired right back with a colorful insult of her own. "(L)ol what a p**** a** b****. tagged everyone but me. an honor, mister president," she tweeted.

By Monday morning, Chrissy Teigen, [TeamChrissy] and [filthymouthedwife] were all trending on Twitter.

Legend criticized the President, too – without the profanity – by tweeting, "Imagine being president of a whole country and spending your Sunday night hate-watching MSNBC hoping somebody -- ANYBODY -- will praise you."

President Muhammadu Buhari says Zimbabwe and Africa owe a huge debt of gratitude to former Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, who he describes as a "highly intelligent and courageous leader."

The president's spokesman, Garba Shehu, in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, said the President made the remarks in a condolence letter he signed and sent to President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the president had, on September 6, condoled with the government and people of Zimbabwe over the demise of their former president.

The letter reads in part: "Zimbabwe and Africa owe a huge debt of gratitude to this highly intelligent and courageous leader who fought and sacrificed so much to liberate his country and free his people from minority occupation.

"He was also in the vanguard of the fight to free several countries of Southern Africa from apartheid and colonialism. He was a true pan-Africanist and patriot. Africa has lost one of its finest sons.

Actor and international icon Priyanka Chopra opened up about her future with husband, singer Nick Jonas, revealing that having children with him is on her “to-do list”.

The 37-year-old actor opened up to Vogue India in her September cover story about the projected next steps in the couple’s relationship following their lavish December 2018 wedding, reported People.

While Nick has been busy touring with brothers, Joe and Kevin Jonas, Priyanka revealed that she ultimately wants to settle down in Los Angeles and have a baby with her husband. “I have homes in Mumbai and New York, which are very vertical cities. LA is more horizontal,” she was quoted in Vogue India as saying.

“Buying a home and having a baby are on my to-do list,” she said, later adding, “For me, home is wherever I’m happy, as long as I have the people I love around me.”

The Quantico star had recently told InStyle that having children with her husband is definitely on the horizon when the time is right. “I want my existence to have meant something. I want my kids to turn around and be like, ‘Yeah, that was my mom,’“ she shared in June.

In late 2018, shortly after getting hitched, Priyanka told People that the couple plans to take things as they come.

“I always say, ‘Man proposes, God disposes.’ So I’m not taking any chances. We definitely want kids, and when the time is right, it will happen,” she said at that time.

However, the Mary Kom star also told People last June that her motherhood timeline is within the next decade.

“In 10 years, I definitely want to have kids. That is, it’s going to happen in the next 10 years. Well, hopefully earlier than that. I’m very fond of children and I want to be able to do that,” she said.

PoliticsTaraba Election: Tribunal Rules In Favour Of APC by Gbgists(op): 9:19am On Sep 08, 2019
Aminu Malle, the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate for Jalingo/ Yorro /Zing Federal Constituency of Taraba State has defeated Hassan Bappa of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the State National and State House of Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal, sitting in Abuja.

The tribunal on Saturday dismissed the petition by Bappa against the victory recorded by the APC candidate.

Malle contested the election held on February 23, 2019 as the APC’s candidate and was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

However, the Supreme Court voided Malle’s candidacy in a judgment given on June 13, 2019 and ordered that he be replaced by Kasimu Bello Maigari, who was later issued with the certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In its judgment on Saturday, the tribunal held that Bappa and the PDP failed to prove their claims that the election was marred by irregularities and held in substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act. The tribunal also held that it was a fatal error on the part of the petitioners not to have included Maigari as a party in the case after the name of Malle was deleted, as the first respondent in the petition, after the Supreme Court judgment.

PoliticsXenophobia: Protest Rocks Kano Over Attack On Nigerians In South Africa by Gbgists(op): 9:12am On Sep 08, 2019
Some youths in Kano State on Saturday staged a peaceful protest against xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.

The youth, who marched from Zoo Road to Audu Bako Secretariat along the State Road, carried placards with various inscriptions condemning the action on Nigerians.

According to NAN, the protesters, who called on the South African government to bring an end to the attacks, said they would not fold their arms while Nigerians are being attacked and killed.

Spokesman for the protesters and Chairman of Joint Action Campaign Against Xenophobic Attack, Khalid Sanusi urged the Federal Government to take urgent steps to check the ugly trend.

Sanusi said the youth would continue to show their anger to such attacks and picket companies owned by South Africa in Nigeria, until measures were taken to end the attacks.

He attributed the high rate of unemployment in South Africa as the major reason behind the xenophobic attacks, and advised the South African government to tackle the issue.

“It must create job opportunities to the teeming number of unemployed youths in their country,” he said.

A summer of speculation saw the 27-year-old heavily linked with a return to Camp Nou.

After two years in France with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain, Neymar has made no secret of his desire to return to Spain.

Bartomeu insists the option of re-signing a former favourite will not be reviewed again in January, but Pique admits anything could happen another 12 months down the line.

He told Cadena Ser: “There's been a lot of drama, and that's normal because of who he is, but we have to turn the page

“I wish him the best. I spoke with him and I said I hope things go well for him this season and that you never know, each year brings a new opportunity, so we will see.”

Jesse Lingard has been ruled out of England's Euro 2020 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Kosovo through illness.

The midfielder was not named in the squad for Saturday's visit of Bulgaria, with the Three Lions confirming soon after that he will return to Manchester United.

Robert Mugabe will be buried at a hilltop monument reserved exclusively for Zimbabwe’s national heroes, an official said, as the southern African nation began several days of official mourning.

Mugabe died on Friday in Singapore. He was 95. He will be laid to rest in Harare at the National Heroes Acre, set aside for Zimbabweans deemed to have made significant sacrifices for the nation, which emerged from the end of colonial Rhodesia.

The plot, which is located on a hilltop, and built with the help of North Korean architects, features a huge bronze statue of three guerrilla fighters.

SportsSolskjaer Admits Sanchez Could Leave Man Utd by Gbgists(op): 7:03pm On Aug 26, 2019
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has conceded that Alexis Sanchez could leave Manchester United this month "if an offer that's good enough for the club and him" is forthcoming.

The 30-year-old attacker arrived at Old Trafford from Arsenal as part of a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan in January 2018, having enjoyed four successful years at Emirates Stadium.

Sanchez became one of the Premier League's finest players during his time with the Gunners, but he has been unable to reach the same heights in Manchester.

A move away from United has been suggested throughout the summer, with Inter reported to be keen on luring the Chile international to San Siro.

Solskjaer has admitted that Sanchez could be moved on if a deal suits both parties, but if not, there is still plenty of room for the mercurial attacker to contribute.

"Alexis is a quality player. We don't have loads of options," Solskjaer told the Evening Standard.

"If there is an offer that's good enough for the club and him maybe he will go, but if not then he's still our player and he's a quality player."

PoliticsTrump Says US And China To Resume Trade Talks by Gbgists(op): 5:02pm On Aug 26, 2019
President Donald Trump has said the US and China will "very shortly" resume trade talks after a weekend of escalating tension with Beijing.

"China called last night... said let's get back to the table. So we'll be getting back to the table," he said.

On Friday Mr Trump sharply hiked tariffs on billions of dollars of Chinese imports in retaliation for fresh duties from Beijing.

China has yet to comment but earlier called for "calm" to resolve the row.

Mr Trump sent out conflicting messages over the weekend, at first appearing to express regret about the latest tariffs, only for the White House to retract his comments on Sunday.

However, at the G7 summit in Biarritz on Monday he said Chinese officials had made two "very, very good calls" on Sunday night and that Beijing wanted to "make a deal".

Suggesting his pressure had brought the Chinese back to the negotiating table, he added: "They hurt very badly, but they understand this is the right thing to do.

"We're going to start very shortly to negotiate... but I think we're going to make a deal."

SportsJuventus Reject Arsenal Move For Rugani by Gbgists(op): 12:54pm On Aug 03, 2019
Arsenal have had a loan offer turned down by Juventus for centre-back Daniele Rugani.

The Gunners are looking to revamp their backline before next Thursday’s transfer deadline in England, with a central defender and a left-back the key targets.

Arsenal wanted to take Rugani on a two-year loan, with an option to buy at the end of his spell in north London.

But Juventus turned down the approach, with the Serie A champions reluctant to let the 25-year-old leave because they want to go into the season with five central defenders and there are concerns over the fitness of Giorgio Chiellini.

PoliticsWhat We Are Doing About Nigeria Elections – INEC by Gbgists(op): 11:25am On Jul 30, 2019
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday said it was presently harnessing the lessons from the 2019 general electionz and harvesting positive recommendations aimed at improving subsequent elections

INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education, Mr. Festus Okoye, said this at a four-day workshop on media monitoring for some INEC publicity officers in Abuja.

He assured Nigerians that the commission would continue to improve on its processes and procedures.

Speaking on the workshop, the national commissioner said its aimed at increasing understanding of INEC public officers of new issues, challenges and possibilities in the media.

Okoye added that it was also aimed at how to harness such possibilities and arrest negative perception relating to the work of the commission and build a positive image for INEC.

He said that part of the challenges faced by the commission during the 2019 general elections revolves around information management and strategic communication as well as managing public perception around the processes and procedures of the Commission.

The INEC national commissioner, however, commended the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES) for the Media Monitoring Center it donated to the commission.

“The Commission must study and understand the thinking of young people who constitute over 50 per cent of the registered voting population in Nigeria and what keeps them away from the polling units”, NAN quoted him as saying.

“Young persons are very active on the social media and yet have not succeeded in influencing in a significant way the pattern of voting in Nigeria.

“It is a matter of common knowledge that a large proportion of the young people are exceedingly active on the social media and take active part in debates around elections and the electoral process.

“It is our responsibility to understudy and understand the direction and perspectives of young people in relation to the electoral process and why they are very active in the social media and inactive in the voting process,” he said.

SportsJuve All-clear For Dybala-lukaku Swap by Gbgists(op): 10:08am On Jul 30, 2019
Juventus confirmed “interest” for Paulo Dybala and are ready to offer him to Manchester United in exchange for cash plus Romelu Lukaku.

According to reports in Italy, Juve are preparing a proposal to the Old Trafford club.

Dybala is valued at €100m, whereas Manchester United have already told Inter they want €85m for Lukaku, so La Joya would move to England with a cash sum going to Turin too.

Maurizio Sarri has apparently given the all-clear to the switch, as he could use Lukaku as the centre-forward and return Cristiano Ronaldo to his more traditional wide left role.

At the same time, the Bianconeri would be putting a huge spanner in the works for their rivals Inter, who have openly courted Lukaku ever since Antonio Conte took over.

TV/MoviesDisney Breaks Own Record For Global Box Office Returns In A Year by Gbgists(op): 9:59am On Jul 30, 2019
Disney has broken its own record of worldwide film receipts by an individual studio in a single year, underlining its dominant position in the global film industry. According to "Variety" magazine, Disney has amassed $7.67 billion to date in 2019, passing the previous best mark of $7.61 billion it managed in 2016.

Disney’s current film "The Lion King" has been instrumental in pushing it over the line: on its second week of global release it has reached $962.7 million in worldwide takings.

Its figures have also been boosted earlier this year by the release of "Avengers: Endgame" (which recently overtook "Avatar" to become the highest earning film of all time), "Captain Marvel" ($1.1bn), "Toy Story 4" ($917.9m) and "Aladdin" ($1.01bn). Only "Dumbo" ($352.9m) can be considered a disappointment.

Disney’s dominant market position is the result of a huge acquisition programme, in which they successively purchased Pixar Animation (makers of "Toy Story"wink in 2006, Marvel Studios in 2009, and Lucasfilm (producers of the "Star Wars" franchise in 2012). This year they concluded the purchase of fellow Hollywood studio Fox.

CrimeMore Than 60 Killedin Extremist Attack On Nigeria Villagers by Gbgists(op): 9:24am On Jul 29, 2019
Suspected Boko Haram extremists killed more than 60 people in an attack on villagers leaving a funeral in northeastern Nigeria, a local official said Sunday. It was the deadliest extremist attack against civilians in the region this year.

Muhammad Bulama, council chairman of the Nganzai local government area, told reporters that 11 other people were wounded during the attack at midday on Saturday.

Nigerians last week marked the grim 10-year anniversary of the Boko Haram insurgency, which has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced millions and created one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. The extremists are known for mass abductions of schoolgirls and putting young women and men into suicide vests for attacks on markets, mosques and other high-traffic areas.

The extremists, who seek to impose a strict Islamic state in the region, have defied the claims of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration over the years that the insurgency has been crushed. The violence also has spilt into neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon.
