Jurgen Klopp insisted Liverpool would be a "different animal" against Manchester City after his side's pre-season struggles continued on Sunday.

The European champions suffered a 3-0 loss to Napoli in their penultimate friendly ahead of the 2019-20 season, the result extending their winless run to four matches.

Liverpool are set to get stars Mohamed Salah, Alisson and Roberto Firmino back on Monday, with Sadio Mane poised to return after the Community Shield clash against City on August 4.

Reds manager Klopp said it had been an unusual pre-season for Liverpool, but he feels they will be a different team at Wembley.

"Missing six players is strange. That you lose players during a pre-season, we are used to – that happened from time to time," he told a news conference.

"But that they don't start from the beginning and come a couple of days before or after we start with the season is not cool. Again, that's how it is and we prepared everybody as good as possible.

"We have to fight the start of the season 100 per cent with all we have. The good thing is, if the opponents want to analyse us now, they think 'easy job', but we will be a different animal next week."

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed Adamu, has cautioned the public against circulating unsubstantiated security advisories that could create undue fear and apprehension in the country.

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), DCP Frank Mba, said in a statement on Friday in Abuja, that Adamu gave the advice at the backdrop of violent protests by Shi’ite group in Abuja.

Mba said the IGP had ordered the immediate beef-up of security in all the states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to him, the proactive measures, including aerial surveillance of major cities, have been emplaced to ensure the safety and security of lives and property of all Nigerians.

He said that Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) nationwide had been mandated to ensure customised security arrangements.

The FPRO explained that the idea was to checkmate the activities of criminals and any possible threat to public peace in their respective area of responsibilities.

He added that the IGP had also advised all would-be protesters to ensure that they expressed their grievances within the ambit of the law.

“This is to ensure that the constitutional rights of other citizens are not infringed upon or that they do not cause breach of public peace,” he said.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned the general public to be careful of the consumption of animal hides, known as Ponmo.

A statement signed by the Director General (DG) of the agency, Mrs Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that most of those animal hides were meant for industrial use.

Adeyeye added that some of the animal hides were pre-treated with industrial chemicals, which were not of food grade and were toxic and injurious to human health.

According to the her, investigations have revealed that some companies legally imported hides from countries like Lebanon and Turkey, while majority of the product were smuggled into the country through the porous borders.

“The Management of NAFDAC wishes to use this medium to alert the general public and in particular consumers of animal hides popularly known as Ponmo on the activities of some unscrupulous business men and traders.

“These imported animal hides are meant for industrial use by leather industries for the manufacturing of items such as shoes, bag, belt and others.

“Health hazards inherent in the consumption of such animal hides include risk of liver, kidney and heart damage, increased risk of Aplastic anaemia, central nervous system toxicity, cancer and many more,’’ she said.

The DG also said live stock farmers were also advised to note that industrial animal hides could not be used to manufacture animal feed

DR Congo's health minister resigned Monday, citing his removal as the head of his country's Ebola response and concerns over a proposed "experiment" with a new, unlicensed vaccine.

"As a result of your decision to place the response to the Ebola outbreak under your direct supervision... I hereby submit my resignation as health minister," Oly Ilunga wrote in a resignation letter to President Felix Tshisekedi.

"As in any war, because that is what this is, there cannot be several centres of decision-making for risk of creating confusion," said the letter.

Ilunga also objected to suggestions "by actors who have demonstrated a clear lack of ethics" to introduce a second vaccine to the country's fight against the highly-infectious haemorrhagic virus disease.

"Strong pressure has been exerted for several months to roll out a new experiment in the DR Congo," he wrote.

Tshisekedi on Saturday replaced Ilunga as the head of the country's response to the latest Ebola epidemic, which has killed more than 1,700 people.

Nearly 170,000 people have been given an Ebola vaccine manufactured by German pharma giant Merck since the outbreak started in Democratic Republic of Congo a year ago.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been pushing for the introduction of a second vaccine produced by US company Johnson & Johnson, but the health ministry under Ilunga has resisted such a move, citing the risks of introducing a new product in communities where mistrust of Ebola responders is already high.

A protest by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) turned violent on Monday in Abuja.

The protesters reportedly clashed with security agencies close to the Federal Secretariat in the Nigerian capital.

Monday’s incident comes about two weeks after two Shiites were killed and two police officers injured after a similar protest turned violent at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

The Shiites are demanding the release of their leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, who has been in detention for alleged murder since December 2015.

On Monday, the Shiites had begun a protest at Nitel junction and were expected to end at the secretariat.

Witnesses told PREMIUM TIMES that government vehicles including those owned by the emergency management agency were burnt by the aggrieved protesters.

Some other sources alleged that the Shiites threw petrol bombs as part of the protest.

Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the February 23 presidential election, Peter Obi has condemned the incessant killings in Nigerians.

He however noted that the targeting of Nigerians by the killers “has a lot to do with the way and manner we as a nation value and treat our own people”.

“When we criminalize our people all the time, you don’t expect to get the desired respect and valuing from other people.

“For Ghanaians to be listed among nationals that can enter South Africa without visa while Nigerians are being subjected to such extreme humiliation and killings, should tell a lot about how the global community regards us.”

Speaking to newsmen on Sunday, Obi said that Nigerians should not be killed anywhere, more so in South Africa, given the huge sacrifices made by Nigeria, including the resources it deployed, to secure South Africa’s freedom.

The former Anambra State Governor particularly recalled the personal efforts he made when he was Governor to visit South Africa twice to discuss this menace in his meetings with Okey Emuchay and Uche Okeke, the Nigerian diplomats in charge in South Africa at the various times of his visit.

Speaking against the backdrop of the latest killing of a top Nigerian Lady, former Deputy Director General of Chartered Insurance Insitute of Nigeria, Mrs Elizabeth Ndubisi-Chukwu, Obi said that the record of deaths of Nigerians in South Africa is unacceptable and should not be tolerated any longer by Nigeria.

The result of the final MBBS Professional Examination of the medical students in the College of Medicine, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti has been released.

All the 43 medical students presented for the examination passed and one of them with a distinction. With this development, the first set of medical doctors from the state-owned university has been produced. This is after almost 10 years in the University.
