Sugarhugs:

Please what's ican and why does one need it to be successful as an accountant?

ICAN is the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, a body charged with regulating the accounting profession. The Institute also proffers professional designations on candidates that have successfully completed required examinations and issues licenses to those who wish to set up an accounting practice. Hope this helps wink

Based on experience, I'd conclude that the most rewarding career would depend on your interests. Pursuing a degree without having intense passion from the onset may lead to frustrations in the end. Here are my thoughts on the courses you mentioned though:

1. A degree in business administration would only make you a generalist, without core skills in a specific business function e.g. Project Management or Supply Chain Management. If you are undecided about what you want to achieve after concluding your studies, this may be a way to go. If you had an epiphany at some point, and deemed it fit to switch careers, it ain't too late..you can pursue a professional accounting accounting designation e.g. ICAN or ACCA and bingo, you're an accountant already.

2. I'm not too sure how beneficial a degree in Economics is in Nigeria today. But hey, if you really have a passion for developing economic models, then go for it. Most of my buddies who studied the course are either working in banks or just switched to accounting through ICAN or ACCA. This is probably one of the underrated courses in naija compared to some other countries.

3. An then Accounting, which I feel offers a decent amount of opportunities in the Nigerian job market, as every organization must have a financial control, financial reporting or at least an accounting unit. For you to reap the full benefits though, obtaining a professional designation is imperative.

Cheers bud!

Lol....Mr. OP don't boil over MTN just yet until you experience the CSR's at starcomms! I couldn't believe my ears the last time I called in. The rep wasn't even listening to what I had to say and was just unprofessional to say the least in his choice of words and tone. I wonder if these firms have a quality assurance team that listen to random calls and provide feedback to reps

Education / Technical Accounting Question by geezville(m): 1:54am On Apr 29, 2013
So here's a practical scenario that got so many pro's thinking...what's your take?:
What do you do when in a particular period of your Accounts, there was no sales made. But a customer whom you sold to in the previous period returns the goods in the current period.

An organisation made no sales ($0) in the period of Accounts 2012. But however, A customer to whom goods worth $300 was sold to in the previous period of Accounts 2011 returned the goods in 2012.
1, how would such a transaction appear on the face of the Income statement.
2. would it be advisable to go back to the period 2011 and restate your revenue or you would maintain the net sales figure on the face of your accounts as a negative $300.
