Jobs/Vacancies / Oshodi LG: Oso Tasks Empowered Youths On Productive Ventures by generaladunna01(m): 7:44pm On Sep 16, 2017 |
Mr Daisi Oso, the Vice-Chairman, Oshodi Local Government Area, Lagos State, on Saturday advised the empowered youths in the area to be engaged in productive ventures rather than indulging in frivolities. Oso gave the advice at the end of a five-day skill acquisition programme organised by Spin Club, in collaboration with Leo Club, at the Oshodi Youth Centre. He urged the youths to be focused in a particular business, and get acquainted with it, before learning another trade, thus becoming a Jack of all trade, and master of none. Spin Club is a humanitarian organisation established in May 2016 in Lagos State. It was the third skill acquisition training programme the club would organise since inception. The programme entails bead, bag and shoe-making; make up, soap and wig-making, and catering. “I want you all to make use of your time wisely and don’t engage in gossips, as this could rob you of success in life. “This is a beautiful opportunity for you all. “I won’t want you to go back home doing nothing, know that we all cannot go for the white-collar jobs,’’ he said. Miss Hulaimah Kolawole, President of Spin Club, congratulated the participants and urged them to ensure they become self-reliant and financially independent through the knowledge gained at the programme. Kolawole called for more sponsors for the programme, as the club intended to eradicate poverty in youths through the skill acquisition training, thus minimising crime rate in the society. “I want you all to make a living for yourselves and affect the lives of other less privileged individuals out there. “That way, we can all be happy when our pockets are full. “We want more sponsors so that we can reach out to more jobless youths out there; so, we call on private individuals and corporate organisations to help us out,” she said. Miss Louisiana Iwule, the Chief Executive Officer of Luzkara Media, who became an entrepreneur at 21, charged the participants to be successful in business through hard work and remaining focused. “If you must be successful as an entrepreneur, don’t rely on anybody but yourself, depend solely on your hard work and be focused,” she said. 175 youths, who participated in the training, were issued with certificates. |
Politics / “change Will Not Happen By A Slogan” And Other Things Saraki Said by generaladunna01(m): 8:44pm On Sep 20, 2016 |
The Nigerian Senate resumed today from their seven-week
recess and in his welcome speech, Senate President Bukola
Saraki made some salient points about the economy and
how it can be revived, amongst other things. As it was a
pretty lengthy speech, we’ve listed some of the most
interesting and noteworthy statements with interjections of
how we truly feel about those statements.
1. “I remember trying to explain to my people that this
kind of thing (the current economic crisis and its
attendant evil) does not happen overnight; that the
seeds for the condition we suffer from today must have
been planted by past administrations that refused to do
what was necessary”
This statement must have come at a time when Senator
Saraki fell briefly into a state of forgetfulness. The Saraki
dynasty is a part of the past administration, the present but
hopefully, not the future. Bukola Saraki was the Governor of
Kwara state from 2003 to 2011, so we know he planted a
few seeds himself. And is this an attempt at another blame
game?
2. “It is clear to me that when people are desperately
hungry, what they need is leadership with a clear vision;
leadership whose daily actions reflects the very urgency of
the people’s condition”
Mr Senate President sir, how about we start by you lot
practising the above sermon? How’s that for a change? For
one, your salaries do not reflect the hardship of the people
so CUT IT. When that’s done, we’ll take you seriously. Next
please…
3. “Distinguished colleagues, the simple question for our
debate must be; how do we tame the widespread hunger in
the land? How do we save our businesses from collapse?
How do we save jobs for the majority and create even a lot
more?
Here are the answers. Give yourselves up to the EFCC for
those who have pending cases, those who allegedly
siphoned state funds (including Saraki himself) should
return them, those who need to go to jail should pack their
bags and then, we’ll continue from there.
4. “The world has come to know Nigeria as a people who
have formed a habit of proving naysayers wrong and
turning adversity into triumph. Many times experts have
quipped that Nigeria is finished, but we come back
stronger.”
This is supposed to be encouraging but no, we should all
cover our faces in shame.
5. “This occasion will not be any different. But it will not
happen by a slogan!”
Is the Senate President throwing jabs at the
#ChangeBeginsWithMe campaign? Of course, he is and this
feels so good. We refuse to chant useless slogans while
we’re led into damnation.
6. “My expectation is that by the time we are done with our
debate, we should make key actionable recommendations
to the Executive on what this chamber sees as the way
forward in the immediate, mid-term and long-term
solutions to this economic situation.”
We reckon this debate will take ages considering today’s
session lasted only three hours. These people are just not
serious. If the economic situation really mattered to the
Senate, they would take the bull by the horn.
7. “I do not think anybody in this chamber has gone
through more political persecution than myself since the
inception of this government but i will be the last to fold my
arms and say that the current economic problem is not my
problem. No, it is.”
Yes, it is. And none of the political persecution is
undeserved so this pity party is nowhere near appealing.
8. “Distinguished colleagues, we cannot afford further
distraction and fixation to politics that would not and does
not add food on the table of our people, or add one mega-
watt of electricity to our grid. Everywhere you go, there is
hunger in our land and our people want solutions to their
problems.”
Literally everywhere you go except the homes of Senate and
House of reps members.
9. “We will be relying on your courage, bi-partisan spirit,
endurance, personality, long hours of plenary sitting that
could sometime last into the night if necessary, diligent
oversight and prompt committee reporting.”
Isn’t this what they call medicine after death? This is all of
why you were voted in in the first place? Add a renewed
mentality and selflessness to that list, by the way. And for
sittings that could last into nights, we’ll see. |
Jokes Etc / Joke Of The Day by generaladunna01(m): 10:26am On Sep 20, 2016 |
A beer company was hiring a taster, someone to taste the
beers before selling out. So they placed adverts and one
afternoon, a dirty, rough looking man walked into the
manager's office asking to be employed.
The manager tried to figure out how he could drive this man
away but couldn't come up with an idea, so he decided to
give the man a trial. He ordered his secretary to give the
man a glass of wine. He took a sip and said, "It's red wine,
a muscat, three years old, grown on a north slope, matured
in steel containers."
"That's correct!" The manager exclaimed, "Well give him
another one lets see."
So he was given. He took a sip again and said, "It's brukutu,
a combination of herbs and akpeteshie, distilled at
Akokoaso near New Abirem in Eastern Region of Ghana 3
years ago"
"Incredible!" said the manager.
Now the manager went closer to the secretary and
whispered to her saying, "Go get some of your urine in a
cup let's see if he will get that." So the man was given the
cup of urine. He took a sip, turned to the manager and said,
"Female urine, 26 years old, 2 weeks pregnant and if I'm not
given this job, sir, I will tell your wife who is responsible for
the pregnancy! "both the man and secretary fainted. 2 Likes |

Culture / Ooni Launches Environmental Sanitation Programme In Ife by generaladunna01(m): 10:20pm On Sep 18, 2016 |
The programme is worth millions of Naira and
anchored by Motherland Beckons and has as part
of strategies to push residents’ involvement a
cleaning competition among all the streets in Ife.
The cleanest street in Ile-Ife and its environs
when chosen would receive a cash reward of
100,000 Naira every month.
At the commissioning of the project held in front
of the Ile-Oodua, Enuwa Square in Ile Ife, Osun
State, Oba Ogunwusi, who was accompanied by
his queen, Olori Wuraola Ogunwusi, said the
provision of the two new Leyland trucks and
waste disposal bins was to encourage the people
of Ile-Ife to take the issue of sanitation very
seriously.
He declared that “environmental sanitation or
cleanliness is crucial in the drive to make Ile-Ife
a tourist destination. And Ile-Ife has to be
prepared ahead for the millions of tourists
expected to visit the ancient historical city from
next year”.
Ooni of Ife at the launching of the ‘Gba’femo’ initiative
According to him, this is why about 200 youths
have been selected and enlisted for the take-off
of the programme in collaboration with Local
Government Authorities.
Waste To Wealth Programme
Oba Ogunwusi, therefore, urged the women and
elders to co-operate with them in order to make
it successful.
“We should not leave every responsibility to the
government alone. We are the ones that voted for
those in position of authority. Thus, we are also
part of the government. Therefore, we need to
support the governments at all times to make our
environment clean, neat and healthy.
“It is part of Ife anthem to uplift Ile-Ife. It is when
we uplift our community that the government
would be encouraged and give necessary
assistance to our community,” the Ooni told
reporters.
He noted that the event was a great one before
God. “This is because God dwells in cleanliness.
And that is why the event is special to me,” he
highlighted.
Oba Ogunwusi emphasised that environmental
sanitation and cleanliness in all ramifications
should be properly observed and carried out in all
the nooks and crannies of Ile-Ife.
He encouraged all the residents to ensure that Ife
city became the cleanest city in Nigeria.
He said that the programme would begin from
each household.
One of the trucks that will be used for waste disposal in
Ife town
“It is the women that ensures cleanliness of the
home. Therefore, all the women in Ile-Ife and
environs should give priority to environmental
sanitation and cleanliness, the monarch added.”
He also urged the Environmental Sanitation
Vanguard in the palace to ensure the replication
of the clean palace environment observed in the
last six months despite visits by thousands of
people daily to the palace.
Earlier, the Project Manager, Mr Tunde Awoyemi,
while addressing the crowd at the event said that
Ooni Ogunwusi had challenged the youths,
women and elders of the community to be
actively involved in environmental sanitation and
cleanliness of Ile-Ife and environs.
He added that the two new Leyland trucks and
waste disposal bins provided by the monarch
would go round the city to collect refuse and
dump them at a designated dump site where it
would be separated for recycling, converting it to
wealth. “It would be waste to wealth programme,”
he stressed.
Also the Ife Traditional Council led by Obalufe of
Iremo, Oba Idowu Adediwura and Lowa Adimula
of Ife, Oba Julius Omisakin, spoke glowingly in
support of the programme initiated by Ooni
Ogunwusi.
They said that they had chosen wisely in picking
Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi as their king.
They also appealed for support and co-operation
of all and sundry in Ile-Ife and its environs to
make the programme successful.
This initiative is coming days after flood
destroyed property in the state’s capital city,
Osogbo , leading to the death of one person.
The incident had been blamed on indiscriminate
waste disposal by residents, something that the
Ooni is trying to address in Ife town.
Dredging work has, however, started in Osogb o to
guard against recurrence of the incident that
occurred after flood warning was issued |
Foreign Affairs / IMF Ready To Help African Central Banks by generaladunna01(m): 6:29pm On Sep 14, 2016 |
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed its
readiness to help sub-Saharan African economies
whenever it is required to do so.
IMF deputy managing director, Mitsuhiro Furusawa, gave
the indication, on Tuesday, noting that central banks in the
region had been facing some challenges that needed help
from IMF.
“The IMF is fully committed to providing any assistance
that the Kenyan authorities and those across Africa may
need to continue upgrading the monetary policy
frameworks to address the challenges of the future,” he
said.
The IMF official cited Nigeria’s economy at the moment and
said “at times there may appear to be a conflict between
the goals of low inflation and economic growth”.
“But we have learned from hard experience that high
inflation distorts the private sector’s savings and
investment decisions — leading ultimately to slower
growth,” he said in Kenya.
“That is why countries have increasingly placed greater
emphasis on price stability, and many of them have made
low and stable inflation the primary objective for monetary
policy.
He also said, “new central banks lacked independence from
their governments: they were directed to finance large
fiscal deficits. There were pervasive foreign exchange and
interest rate controls”.
“The weaker relationship between money and inflation, and
the changing financial landscape, are again calling on
African central banks to adjust their strategies.
“Ghana, South Africa, and Uganda have adopted formal
inflation-targeting regimes. Other countries with flexible
exchange rate regimes are de-emphasizing the role of
monetary aggregates and incorporating elements of the
monetary policy practices of industrial and emerging
market countries.”
Furusawa recommended that: “First, the central bank
should have a clear legal mandate of policy goals and
operational independence to pursue these goals,” he said.
“Second, the primary, medium-term objective of monetary
policy should be price stability. Monetary policy ultimately
has a limited capability to directly influence real variables
such as output growth over the long-term.
“Third, the central bank should make a medium-term
numerical inflation objective the cornerstone for its
monetary policy actions and communications. A
transparent inflation objective provides a simple benchmark
against which to measure performance.
“Fourth, the central bank should carefully take into account
the implications of monetary policy adjustments for
financial stability. However, this should not come at the
expense of undermining the central role of the medium-
term inflation objective. Any significant erosion of central
bank credibility can change inflationary expectations for
the worse. This, in turn, could have an undesirable impact
on real activity and financial stability.
“Fifth, the central bank should have a clear and effective
operational framework, by setting an operating target and
clearly communicating the link between such an operating
target and the medium-term inflation objective. This
supports the functioning of money markets.
“Sixth, the central bank should have a transparent,
forward-looking monetary policy strategy that reflects
timely and comprehensive assessments of the monetary
transmission mechanism.
“Seventh, central bank communications should be
transparent and timely. This helps reduce uncertainty,
improves monetary policy transmission, and facilitates
accountability. The goal must be to build credibility.” |

Education / Are You Good Enough To Read This Entire Poem Correctly? by generaladunna01(m): 10:15pm On Sep 12, 2016 |
You've probably heard it from many non-native speakers:
English is a VERY hard language to learn and master. ""DON'T YOU THINK SO, READER,RATHER, SAYING LATHER, BATHER, FATHER? Finally which rhymes with ENOUGH, THOUGH, THROUGH, BOUGH, COUGH, HOUGH, TOUGH?? We may take that fact for granted because it’s the first or only language we’ve had to learn, but the pronunciations of words seem to make no sense. Eight ways to pronounce “ough?” That’s insane! Well, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. This poem, which actually manages to rhyme as well, walks us through the many, many pitfalls of the English language. Take a crack at it and gain a new appreciation not only for the skills you’ve developed but those that non-native speakers have as well! 1 Like 2 Shares |
