The speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has spoken against another shift of election date in Nigeria and insinuations about planned interim government. At a meeting held at the National Assembly on Tuesday with members of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, Mr Tambuwal stressed the need for politicians not to heat the polity in any form. The speaker also spoke against individuals who he said were working against peaceful, free and fair general elections. “Dark Days May Return” “It is very clear that if we are not careful, the dark days may return to Nigeria. We must not be playing Ostrich. “It is very clear that certain individuals are not interested in a free and fair process of election in this country. “We must not forget the fact that out of the over 170 million people, the less than 2,000 of us that are elected are merely privileged by God to find ourselves where we are,” the Speaker cautioned. He said that the lawmakers had passed a motion on the floor of the House, laying emphasis on the time line of elections. He warned that further postponement of the elections may portend danger on Nigeria’s democracy and possibly on the country. Mr Tambuwal further questioned why there was so much talk about a plan for an interim government, stressing that the nation’s constitution did not provide for such system of government. “All this talk about interim government, where? We do not have it in the constitution. Is anybody trying to come and remove us from here first? Those talking about interim government, are they planning a coupe? We should ask them,” he said. He explained that anyone planning an interim government would have to halt the current arrangement before an interim government could be established, something he said was unconstitutional. “In any case, any form of government outside the constitution is a coup against this democracy. “I don’t even know why our security agencies are allowing people to be talking about this when they know that it is treasonable. People must not take advantage of their positions to put this country into chaos,” he warned. Nigeria’s general elections had already been shifted once from earlier date of February 14 and 28 to March 28 and April 11. The Independent National Electoral Commission, announcing the postponement on February 7 said it took the decision after wide-reaching consultations. It further said it had been advised by military chiefs to shift the election by six weeks to enable the military secure communities in the north-east under the control of the Boko Haram terrorist group and make room for all Nigerians to take part in the election. www.channelstv.com/2015/03/03/tambuwal-opposes-further-election-date-shift/ |
The House of Representatives in Nigeria has warned against the removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, by any individual or institutions. The warning came on Tuesday after a motion, seeking to stop any planned removal of Professor Jega was adopted by the House. The motion was sponsored by Ali Ahmad, a lawmaker from Kwara State. There were oppositions to the motion, but they were not enough to pull the needed vote to stop the motion. Submitting the motion, Mr Ahmed said: “Any alteration to the status quo arrangement in whatever form at this crucial stage will invariably lead to further postponement of the date elections. Further concerned that such threats to tamper with the status quo may take several forms, such as illegal removal of the INEC Chairman”. But the Deputy Minority Leader of the House, Mr Leo Ogor, opposed the motion, saying that the motion was totally speculative, as the lawmaker was not precise about what was happening or who was planning the removal. He said that nobody was interested in removing Professor Jega. Mr Ogor’s opinion was, however, overruled by the Speaker of the House, Mr Aminu Tambuwal, before the motion was put up for vote. A larger number of the House supported the motion moved by Mr Ahmed, which sought to stop any planned removal of the chairman of the electoral body and it was adopted. The issue was also echoed by the speaker when he received members of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room at the National Assembly. Mr Tambuwal rejected the idea of an interim government in Nigeria and the suggestions that the INEC chairman should proceed on terminal leave. Several members of the opposition All Progressives Congress have alleged that there were plans by the executive to ask the chairman of the electoral body to proceed on terminal leave before the election. But during a Presidential Media Chat in February, President Goodluck Jonathan said there were no plans to sack the chairman of INEC, saying “the rumours belonged to the garbage world”. www.channelstv.com/2015/03/03/reps-adopt-motion-against-removal-of-jega/ |

The social media has been awash with statements about the governor’s health. Some rumor peddlers have reported that Kogi State governor Idris Ichala Wada is in India receiving treatment for mental illness. The trend took a dismal dimension on Wednesday evening with claims that Wada is dead. However, according to recent reports, the governor is alive and he is not in India. A source revealed that the governor is sick but it is not mental illness. The Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada is alive. Sources close to the governor have confirmed this morning that he is alive. A source from the government house in Lokoja (name withheld) has confirmed that the governor is actually sick but not the speculated mental illness. The source further claimed that the governor is not receiving medical attention in an Indian hospital but in a US hospital. Efforts to reach more officials have proved abortive. Those who were reached pleaded for anonymity. Tongues have been wagging because it is believed that the governor has not returned to the country since he traveled immediately after the Sallah celebration. Moses Musa, a social commentator posted a comment on the face book page of ‘Latest Kogi News’ an online newspaper. He said, “As at today he is the Governor of Kogi state, the people should be briefed on his whereabouts and state of health, in the absence of that, the rumour mills will take centre stage. Where are his information managers? The comments by Kogi state citizens have been unpleasant since the governor took ill. Abdulmannan Adaji from Kogi state said, “governor wada, I do not like you but I wish u well and I advice you to change your ways. Nuhu Alhassan Suleiman said, “This is another Yaradua scenario.” Abubakar Rajab, a former PDP chieftain and now a member of the APC, lamented the negative comments coming form Kogi citizens and advised the people not to wish Wada bad no matter the differences. He said, “Good news that the governor is alive. My people whatever our differences may be, we should not wish our fellow human being bad. It is so disheartening to hear the rumours people are carrying about concerning the health of the governor. I wish him a speedy recovery.” In a similar vein, Ocheja Christian a social commentator said, “I read with dismay the contents of some posts and comments on Kogi online groups about the governor of our dear state, it all boil down to the pains many feel about the governor, which on the surface seemed okay - but deep down it is repugnant to rejoice over the misfortune of others. The governor like all mortals can’t be immune to sickness, it is normal for him to be ill as we all do; it is disturbing to read some comments on this issue. I am an advocate of service to our people and will support if we criticize the governor on his policies with alarming regularity instead of going personal and wishing for constitutional crisis for a state as our. |
