At least we have some discerning minds here.

Imagine shooting themselves in the foot. May be they will now claim that bribe monies were first pooled into that account for the judges to share.

Can somebody please clarify me? I am not understanding what is happening again. At first, it was alleged that the monies recovered from the houses of the Judges were bribe money. But now, according to paragraph 10 of this post, 'There is a strong suspicion by the DSS that money recovered from the residences of these Judges were drawn from the suspicious account'. Which one do we believe? Why the media trial when we are not too sure?
Are you surprised with the sudden twist in tongue ? LOL

The remittances into the account were in billions of Naira. There is a strong suspicion by the DSS that the dollars seized from the residences of some of these judges were drawn from the suspicious account.
When you see quotes like this you know the DSS have already lost the case. They aren't even certain on their reasons why the judges were raided.

No more talk about travelling to hell to collect bribes in malls, on mountains, in Rivers, in Lakes and on Hills.

PoliticsEmulate NJC, Suspend Amaechi, Other Ministers Accused Of Corruption, PDP Tells B by Geniro(op): 8:54pm On Nov 04, 2016
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to emulate the judiciary by asking ministers accused of corruption to step aside for proper investigation. The party made the call in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Dayo Adeyeye, on Friday in Abuja.

The National Judicial Council (NJC) had on Thursday announced its decision to suspend justices facing corruption charges.
The justices are Sylvester Ngwuta and Inyang Okoro of the Supreme Court, Mohammed Tsamiya, Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division and Kabiru Auta of Kano State High Court. Others are Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court, Abuja; Justice I. A. Umezulike, former Chief Judge of Enugu state and Muazu Pindiga of Federal High Court, Gombe.

Mr. Adeyeye said that Justices Ngwuta and Okoro had alleged that they were the targets of a witch-hunt because they refused offers of inducement and bribes from two ministers. They had named them as Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi and his Science and Technology counterpart, Ogbonnaya Onu.

He said the ministers allegedly tried to offer bribe to the judges to subvert the course of justice in appeals against the decisions of lower courts in election petitions in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Ekiti and Rivers.

In order to allow for a fair and independent investigation, it is incumbent on President Muhammadu Buhari to ask these ministers to step aside pending the conclusion of investigation into the allegations.
“The judiciary has set a very good example in its quest to fight corruption,” Mr. Adeyeye said.

“It has proven that it is ready to reform itself and we commend the NJC for taking this bold step.
“Likewise, we call on the administration of the president to emulate the NJC,’’ he said, adding that anything less would confirm the belief that the administration considered itself as “above the law’’.

Mr. Adeyeye added that it would be a wrong signal if the ministers were retained in the face of the serious allegations against them.
According to him, if such action is not taken, it will imply that the entire judicial corruption saga was a deliberate attempt to blackmail that arm of government. (NAN)

PoliticsWike, Akpabio, Others Responsible For Bribery Allegations Against Amaechi – APC by Geniro(op): 9:09pm On Nov 03, 2016
The All Progressives Congress, APC has accused Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike, Delta state Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel and the immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom state and current Senate Leader, Godswill Akpabio (all PDP leaders) of being responsible for bribery allegations by the Supreme Court Justices, Inyang Okoro and Justice Sylvester Ngwuta” against the Transport Minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

In a statement made available to newsmen by the party’s Chairman, Rivers state chapter, Chief Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, on Thursday, the party, however, said that the PDP bigwigs instead induced and bribed the Supreme court justices to accuse the Transport minister of bribery, a ploy it said is to divert the attention of the media and the anti-graft agency away from investigating them on their own corruption allegations. It also said it has uncovered secrets of how the aforementioned PDP leaders engaged in the bribery act.

“The allegations against Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi by Justice Inyang Okoro and Justice Sylvester Ngwuta of the Supreme Court have been linked to several top Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders.” “The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, the governor of Delta State Ifeanyi Okowa, the governor of Akwa Ibom State Udom Emmanuel and the immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom state who’s now the Senate Leader, Godswill Akpabio (all PDP leaders) have been linked to the Supreme Court Justices’ allegations against Amaechi.”

“These big Four PDP politicians are said to be the biggest spenders who allegedly induced and bribed the Supreme Court Justices with hefty sums of money to get favorable judgements. They are said to be the major sources of the money, wealth and properties that has been traced by the DSS to Justices Okoro and Ngwuta.” “These PDP bigwigs are said to have advised the Justices to drag Amaechi into their arrest and investigation by the DSS. They believe doing so would muddle the waters, divert the media and public attention from the corruption allegations against them and make the whole arrest and investigations look like a political vendetta against the Justices.” “Our findings indicate that they told the Justices that the Buhari government is after them, wants to bring them down, and that they must drag Amaechi down as well. They deceived the Justices to think and believe that Amaechi is the one behind their travails because of some State governorship electoral matters the apex court handled, that the All Progressives Congress(APC) lost.” “Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta governorship election appeals were cited to hoodwink Justices Okoro and Ngwuta into believing that Amaechi orchestrated their arrest and investigation.” “It would be recalled that in the recent past, a few media outlets had written articles on the scandal and the link between Justices Okoro and Ngwuta of the apex court and these four PDP leaders.

The media outlets (Not Vanguard) had specifically written about how huge sums of money in different currencies, were channeled by these PDP leaders to induce the Supreme Court Justices to influence Supreme Court rulings and get favourable judgements in the governorship election appeals of Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta States.” “And Amaechi was targeted because the four of them – Wike, Akpabio, Udom and Okowa – see Amaechi as a big threat to their political ambitions and calculations ahead of 2019 elections. All four are from the South-South region, just like Amaechi. They are scared of Amaechi, his closeness to President Muhammadu Buhari and they are afraid that Amaechi continual towering presence in the Buhari administration would truncate their plans and calculations for 2019.” “They want to damage Amaechi irreparably and destroy him politically. The ultimate target is President Buhari, and to get to the President, the conspiracy is to take out Amaechi, first. Furthermore, our investigations reveal that all four PDP leaders hold one grudge or another against Amaechi. They desperately seek to destroy him. But they will fail.”

PoliticsBREAKING: NJC Backtracks, Suspends 7 Senior Judges Accused Of Corruption by Geniro(op): 7:55pm On Nov 03, 2016
The National Judicial Council, NJC, has suspended seven senior judges arrested in October by the State Security Service for alleged corruption.
The NJC had initially refused to suspend the judges despite public pressure, saying the allegations against them had not been substantiated.
It however said the judges had voluntarily stepped down from court sittings.
The latest decision came after the council’s 7th meeting between Wednesday and Thursday.
A communique issued at the end of the meeting, and signed by NJC’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, said the decision was taken to avoid allowing persons under investigation to to partake in presiding over judicial matters at the same time.
“Council also decided that Judicial Officers shall not be standing trial for alleged corruption related offences and be performing judicial functions at the same time,” the communique said. “Council however decided that it will ensure that Judicial Officers who are being investigated for alleged high profile criminal offences do not perform judicial functions until their cases are concluded.”
The judges were arrested on October 7.

LaClicKLaBenDin:

In sane climes, an agent of government such as the EFCC, does a very meticulous investigation and comes up with concrete evidence, before proceeding to arrest, but here in Nigeria, the EFCC, will arrest, detain you, charge you to court, while investigation is still on.

It's only in Nigeria that you'd hear an agent of government such as the EFCC say; "we're still building a case against him/her", and that's after someone has been arrested, media-tried and charged to court.

It's also only in Nigeria, that an agent of government such as the EFCC will invite someone for questioning, with the hope of using their confessional statements against them in the court of law.

Now back to the issue, someone can give another person a loan of 100million without papers or whatever, it all depends on the level of relationship, trust, or understanding between them. That a judge obtained a loan isn't a crime and it can never be termed an act of corruption, except it can be proven beyond any reasonable doubt that, the said money was paid as bribe. For the EFCC to try and twist the story in other to activate the ever active 'corruption-sentiment' of Nigerians, is at best a good effort that the gullible will fall for, but not for those who have critical minds and have risen above the sentimentalist and sensationalistic disposition of this government and it's agents.
I concur fully.

In a sane society, any transfer of huge amount of money will draw the attention of Law Enforcement agents. They will want to know the source of the fund. If the owner cannot prove its legitimate source, the fund will be confiscated. The same goes for carrying or storing huge amount of cash.

As a federal employee, goodluck proving that undocumented $45,000 (equivalent) is a gift. It goes against ethics. In Nigeria, anomalies are the custom while right is wrong. Most people from the 80's till today are being raised under this twisted notion making it impossible for any progressive change to occur in Nigeria: You cannot teach new tricks to old monkeys.

The EFCC know the "legitimate" source of the cash and so far they haven't got anything on the parties involved. Why not do your homework and establish a premiss before blabbing off.

We should be hearing more of EFCC arraigns Mr/Ms/Mrs XX in court for this and let the press report factual proceedings from the court room.

PoliticsAjumogobia Admits Taking N18m ‘loan’ From Oil Firm’s MD For London Home by Geniro(op): 8:55pm On Nov 01, 2016
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has got a major lead into how a judge under its investigation got N18 million from the Managing Director of a leading oil and gas company to buy a house in London while still serving as a Federal High Court judge. The anti-graft agency stumbled on the fresh lead while interrogating Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, one of the six judges being probed over alleged corrupt practices while serving in the Temple of Justice.

The female judge, who turned in herself to EFCC for questioning last week, and is undergoing routine questioning by the security agents over suspected cash receipts, admitted that she actually got the said N18 million as a soft loan from a ‘family friend’ who happens to be a major player in the downstream sector of the Nigerian oil industry with a view to buying a house in the United Kingdom. A top source, who confirmed the discovery of the amount in the course of investigating the judge, the amount was wired to a foreign account from the judge’s domiciliary account for the purchase of a property in the UK.

The agency did not however disclose the location of the property in the UK, apparently not to hinder investigation. But to get the truth about the ‘loan allegedly granted the judge by the oil tycoon, the EFCC last night began questioning the MD of the firm. The man was at the office of the commission last night and it was not clear if he would be released as at the time of filing the report. A top EFCC source told Vanguard that the money was transferred by the businessman to Justice Ajumogobia’s account in 2012, pointing out that there was no paper to indicate that it was a loan, as claimed by her.

Buhari’s Strategists Chasing Ants By Reuben Abati
October 31, 2016 News 305 Views

President Muhammadu Buhari’s strategists, if they are at work at all, are chasing ants and ignoring the elephant in the room. They do him great disservice. Their oversight is hubristically determined either by incapacity or a vendetta-induced distraction. It is time they changed the game and the narrative; time they woke up.

It’s been more than 15 months since the incumbent assumed office as President, but his handlers have been projecting him as if he is a Umaru Musa Yar’Adua or a Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, first time Presidents who could afford the luxury of a learning period before settling down to the job, and who in addition must prove themselves to earn necessary plaudits. In making this mistake, President Buhari’s handlers created a sad situation whereby they have progressively undermined his image.

The truth is that Muhammadu Buhari is neither a Yar’Adua nor a Jonathan. He may have sought the office of President in three previous elections, before succeeding at his fourth attempt in 2015, but he came into office on a different template. He had been Head of State of Nigeria (1983-85) and had before then served his country at very high levels as military administrator, member of the Supreme Military Council, head of key government institutions and subsequently from 1985 -2015, as a member of the country’s Council of State, the highest advisory body known to the Nigerian Constitution.

In real terms, therefore, General Muhammadu Buhari did not need the job of President. If he had again lost the election in 2015, his stature would not have been diminished in any way. His place in Nigerian history was already assured. That is precisely why it was possible to package him successfully as a man on a messianic mission to rescue Nigeria from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and whatever is ascribed to that in the emotion-laden field of Nigerian politics.

He might have acquired many IOUs when he assumed office in 2015, as all politicians do, but he was not under any pressure to pay back and he was so well positioned in the people’s reckoning and historically that he could call anyone’s bluff and get away with it. That much is of course obvious. Many of the persons and groups who could claim that they helped him to get to power a second time are today not in a position to dictate to him.

Long before such persons left their mother’s homes for boarding school, he had made his mark as a Nigerian leader. He could look them straight in the eye and cleverly put them in their place. Corrupt patronage is a strong element of Nigerian politics and so far, President Buhari has shown a determination to limit the scope of such politics. Whether that is right or wrong is a matter of political calculations, and if current intimations are anything to go by, that may even prove costly in the long run.

Nonetheless, when a leader assumes office with his kind of helicopter advantages, it should not be expected that he would hit the ground like a tyro in the corridors of power. Not too many persons in his shoes get a second chance to return to power after a gap of 30 years. As it happened in his case, he would be expected to run the country as a statesman, not as a party man, as a bridge-builder, not as a sectional leader and as father of all.

The writer of his inaugural speech alluded to this last point in that borrowed statement about belonging to everyone and to nobody. Charles de Gaulle of France originally made that statement in 1958 when he returned to power as President and founder of the Fifth Republic. Charles de Gaulle had been an army General and one of the key figures in the drama of World War II. In his second coming, De Gaulle built an unforgettable legacy.

President Buhari’s handlers may have had an idea of going in such direction but so far, they have taken their eyes off the legacy project. The best way to remember a President of the incumbent’s status is with regard to the legacy he leaves behind. We do not need to travel to 20th century France to borrow an elaborate example.

We have the home-made example of former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Like Buhari, Obasanjo had been Head of State. Like him also, he returned to be civilian President. Obasanjo did not try to impress Nigerians with the daily grind of governance or obsession with the past. He played a legacy game from the first day. The military had been excused out of power. Nigerians by 1999 were so angry with military rule, they just wanted change. Obasanjo capitalized on that and helped to prepare the foundations for the consolidation of the democratic process.

Nigeria had been a pariah nation within the international community and a weakling within the continent. With a combination of charisma, street wisdom and the reactivation of old networks, Obasanjo regained for the country, the respect it deserves. He met a country in debt. He paid off the debts by 2005, and made the country financially stable again. He surrounded himself with bright and talented technocrats, including foreign consultants and within government circles if not outside, he actively encouraged the free flow of ideas.

In doing this, he cultivated the image of a strong, charismatic leader. He also refused to be trapped by ethnic or religious considerations. He had his own faults and there was a lot to complain about as I did at the time, but looking at the big picture, Obasanjo was a good manager of complex relationships, and he had a good sense of humour. Out of office, it is possible indeed to speak of the Obasanjo legacy in Nigerian history in rich and detailed terms.

There are parallels between the circumstances that brought General Obasanjo and General Buhari back to power, and if you wish, you could tease out the connections. But while the former immediately began to build a legacy out of the opportunity, the latter is yet to embark on a defined legacy mission. No political leader ever built a legacy out of complaints and excuses.

An obsession with the past does not produce a legacy; it defeats it. Nor is the restriction of human freedom a legacy-building gesture. General Sani Abacha violated the dignity of virtually every institution in the country but he is remembered more for stabilizing the economy and for creating additional states, particularly Bayelsa, where he is considered a hero. Obasanjo often deployed power as if it was a whiplash, making his politics ambiguous, but that is not the substance of his legacy.

A leader’s legacy lies in those steps he takes to transform society for good and for the people’s benefit. President Buhari’s handlers should begin to think of what legacy he intends to leave behind. A legacy is something big and memorable, not routine exertions or bland ceremonies, the type civil servants are perpetually bringing before a sitting President to keep him in motion, in the absence of movement. I do not intend to construct a possible legacy project for the Buhari administration: a legacy is meant to be the product of careful deliberation, vision and resolve, not something to be thrown up casually in a limited newspaper copy.

But there are grand moves to be made, and that should be done, because a legacy cannot possibly arise from the mere fact of being President of a country twice between the 20thand 21st centuries. If I must make a few suggestions, however, it seems to me that there is a legacy-building opportunity in the same National Political Conference Report that the government of the day seems determined to ignore.

Even if that 2014 Report is ignored: the issues relating to the restructuring of Nigeria have been on the table since independence and more coherently since the 2005 Political Conference which was aborted due to a controversial attempt to hand over a Third Term to the Obasanjo administration through the back door. President Buhari has both the pedigree and the courage to take some bold steps about how Nigeria is presently constituted and ensure not limited reform but far-reaching transformation: create new states, merge some states, if possible, review the revenue allocation formula, embark on legacy infrastructure projects, introduce some alterations in key areas of national life, merge parastatals to reduce cost and duplication, take up some neglected ideas about public finance and give effect to them, revisit the oil and gas sector and further reform it, crush Boko Haram.

Nigeria’s politics is complex and can be frustrating for those who choose to swim in its murky waters, but ultimately every leader will be judged on his record. How would President Buhari like to be judged? It is not too early to pose this question. Legacy is not a destination; it is built one step at a time. It is not an accident; it is a process and the summation of concrete steps to make a difference. The Buhari administration should begin to develop a legacy mindset; this will include measuring the feedback from the people carefully in terms of how their expectations are being met or denied. If this will require a change of team or emphasis, now is the time to take that decision.
