The future of TikTok in the US is uncertain since its fate hinges on an impending April 5 deadline that would force the app to shut down if a deal is not struck. The White House hopes that talks with ByteDance will yield a resolution in time to keep the platform operational. If no agreement is reached before the expiration of the deadline, the TikTok prohibition on a national scale is likely to be reinstated, the fate of the app hanging in the balance. Several potential buyers, including large business organizations, MrBeats and tech firms, have offered billions in a strict legal framework calling for divestiture, a requirement effective since January 19. https://genloaded.com.ng/news/tiktok-ban-looms-in-u-s-as-april-5-deadline-approaches/

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has shared his perspective on how rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) might transform society over the next decade, potentially making humans unnecessary for many common tasks. In a recent interview with comedian Jimmy Fallon on NBC’s The Tonight Show, Gates discussed how AI could revolutionize everyday life and work. Currently, Gates pointed out, genuine expertise remains “rare,” particularly in professions such as medicine and education. He emphasized the continued need for skilled professionals like “a great doctor” or “a great teacher,” whose specialized knowledge is not easily replaceable. However, Gates predicts significant changes on the horizon. “With AI, over the next decade, that will become free, commonplace — great medical advice, great tutoring,” he explained. He further elaborated on the concept of “free intelligence” during a discussion with Harvard University professor and happiness expert Arthur Brooks, emphasizing the transformative nature of this technological shift. Gates noted that AI-powered innovations will become widely accessible, significantly impacting areas from healthcare, with improved medicine and diagnoses, to education, with readily available AI tutors and virtual assistants. “It’s very profound and even a little bit scary — because it’s happening very quickly, and there is no upper bound,” Gates told Brooks. The debate surrounding the human role in an AI-dominated future continues. While some experts view AI as enhancing human capabilities and creating new job opportunities, Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft’s AI CEO, has warned that rapid technological progress could profoundly alter most jobs, potentially leading to a “hugely destabilizing” impact on the workforce. https://genloaded.com.ng/news/bill-gates-predicts-ai-will-replace-human-expertise-in-medicine-and-education/

FIFA has announced that the winners of the 2025 Club World Cup will earn up to $125 million in prize money. This update was confirmed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in an official statement released on Wednesday. Earlier this month, FIFA disclosed a total prize fund of $1 billion for the prestigious tournament, which is set to take place in the United States from June 14 to July 13, 2025. Around half of the $1 billion total prize pool will be distributed among all 32 participating clubs, with amounts determined by their sporting achievements and commercial performance. Consequently, major clubs such as Manchester City and Real Madrid are likely to receive larger shares compared to smaller clubs, based on a distribution model developed in collaboration with the European Club Association. Telecom giants MTN Group and Airtel Africa have announced a significant network infrastructure-sharing agreement focused on expanding mobile connectivity in Nigeria and Uganda, particularly targeting underserved regions. This collaboration aims at optimizing costs while enhancing mobile service delivery in rural and remote areas, according to a joint statement released on Wednesday. The companies indicated that agreements being considered include Radio Access Network sharing and collaborative fibre infrastructure projects, potentially involving the construction of new fibre networks. Ralph Mupita, MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the increasing demand for data services across Africa. “At MTN, we are driven by the vision of delivering digital solutions that drive Africa’s progress and will continue to see strong structural demand for digital and financial services across our markets,” he said. He further explained, “To meet this demand, we continue to invest in coverage and capacity to ensure high-quality connectivity for our customers. That said, there are opportunities within regulatory frameworks for sharing resources to drive higher efficiencies and improve returns.” Both companies have faced significant financial impacts due to currency fluctuations in Nigeria, where MTN and Airtel hold substantial market shares of 51.79% and 34.11%, respectively. Sunil Taldar, CEO of Airtel Africa, emphasized the strategic advantages of infrastructure sharing: “As we compete fiercely in the market on the strength of our brand, services and our offerings we are building common infrastructure, within the permissible regulatory framework,” Taldar stated. “This provides a more robust and extensive digital highway to drive digital and financial inclusion at the same time avoiding duplication of expensive infrastructure to drive operational efficiencies and benefits for our customers.” Following successful agreements in Nigeria and Uganda, the telecom operators are also considering similar partnerships in other markets, including Congo-Brazzaville, Rwanda, and Zambia. Airtel Africa serves over 156 million customers across 14 sub-Saharan African countries, while MTN Group operates in 19 countries in Africa and the Middle East, serving approximately 287 million customers. https://genloaded.com.ng/business/mtn-airtel-africa-partner-to-share-network-infrastructure-in-nigeria-uganda/

Lionel Messi made an unexpected appearance at an Inter Miami game six days after his ankle swollen to almost twice its normal size during the Copa America final in order to accept a plaque honoring his 45th major title win for both club and country. Messi has 45 victories to his name, including the historic League Cup victory last year that gave Inter Miami its first trophy. With their hopes of seeing Messi on the field in Inter Miami’s iconic pink jersey rather than the protective boot, the audience during the game gave him a standing ovation. Argentina’s success was spearheaded by Messi even though the Copa America event was not as exciting as many had expected. The team defeated Colombia in extra time in the Sunday final. Messi-less Despite Lionel Messi’s injury-plagued absence, Inter Miami defeated Chicago Fire 2-1 at home on Saturday to increase their lead atop the MLS standings. Jardi Alba’s strike in the 75th minute did the scoring for Inter Miami. With their 16th victory in 25 games, Inter moved up to 53 points, five ahead of FC Cincinnati, who dropped their match against the New York Red Bulls 3-1. Miami’s first goal came from Paraguayan midfielder Matias Rojas in the sixth minute. Before former Spain star Alba scored the game-winning goal two minutes later, the Fire’s Rafael Czichos, a German defender born in Saudi Arabia, tied the score in the 73rd minute. The Lagos State Police Command claimed its agents apprehended nine kidnappers on Thursday, while two escaped with gunshot wounds. The command stated that the move was the result of credible and actionable intelligence about a dangerous and notorious gang of kidnappers planning to kidnap certain high-net-worth individuals in Lagos. SP Benjamin Hundeyin, Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, confirmed this in a statement released on Friday. Hundeyin added that after receiving the intelligence approximately two weeks ago, police meticulously monitored the situation and determined that the gang planned to strike on Thursday in the Ladipo region of Lagos State. According to him, “The Command had been on the trail of this gang for the past eight months because of their many kidnappings of wealthy individuals in Isolo, Okota, Ejigbo, and Ladipo regions of Lagos State. We are delighted to announce that their reign of terror has effectively ended. He explained that despite being caught off guard, the kidnappers did not give up easy, engaging police forces in a shootout. SP Hundeyin added that the kidnappers surrendered to the police’s superior weaponry, with nine of them neutralised and two escaping with bullet wounds. “They recovered four AK-47 rifles, four locally made semiautomatic pistols, nine AK-47 magazines, three walkie-talkies, one POS machine, and a loudspeaker.” They also retrieved their two operating vehicles, a black Toyota 4Runner and a blue Lexus RX350. Meanwhile, investigations are underway to apprehend the fleeing individuals,” he said. Continue Reading………… https://genloaded.com.ng/news/lagos-police-thwart-kidnap-attempt-neutralize-9-suspects/

Arsenal is in advanced discussions with Bologna regarding the transfer of Riccardo Calafiori. The London club has already agreed on the terms of a contract with Calafiori that would run until June 2029. However, negotiations are ongoing regarding the transfer fee, with Bologna requesting around €50 million for the talented left-back. A notable aspect of the deal is a sell-on clause involving FC Basel. They are set to receive 50% of any amount exceeding €4.5 million from the transfer fee. This clause adds a layer of complexity to the negotiations, as Arsenal and Bologna work to finalize the financial aspects of the deal. While talks are progressing positively, no agreement has been reached yet between the clubs. Both sides are working to find a suitable compromise that satisfies all parties involved in the potential transfer of Riccardo Calafiori to Arsenal. The three players are Julian Álvarez, Alexis MacAllister, and Enzo Fernandez. Messi is currently 37 years old and close to retiring from international football. The Inter Miami forward is currently in the Argentina squad for the Copa America 2024. In an interview with Stake (via Daily Mail), Aguero predicted that Julian Álvarez, Alexis MacAllister, and Enzo Fernandez would be the club's future leaders. Following the (NLC) Nigeria Labour Congress’s strike in the state, business operations have been suspended in the capital city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. As directed by the national body, the NLC, Akwa Ibom Chapter went on an indefinite strike on Monday, June 3. According to Sunny James, the union’s chairperson, employees in the state will guarantee strict enforcement until the federal government accedes to their requests over the increased minimum wage. The NLC Akwa Ibom Chapter will guarantee complete adherence to all national regulations. We’ll visit every office in the state to carry out the instruction. He stated. When visited on Monday, government offices at several places, including as the Federal Secretariat along Abak Road, the Dakkada Secretariat on Udo Udoma Avenue, and the Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat, were all locked. Labor representatives were spotted dancing and playing drums at the state secretariat. Security personnel were also on standby, along with an OPR truck. Following the nationwide walkout called by the NLC and its affiliate unions, public institutions, banks, and other government entities that are not part of the secretariat have closed. All of the banks in the banking zone at the Udo Udoma banking layout were closed, and consumers were seen hanging about because they were unable to enter the banking halls to conduct business. Though Akwa Ibom is known for being a civil service state, merchants complained of little to no sales today as a result of the strike, despite the fact that markets and all other commercial operations in the state were open. The TUC Chairman, Mr. Dominic Abang, responded to the strike by saying that all labor unions in the state had joined it and that it was comprehensive. Nonetheless, schools and students presently taking the West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at various testing locations throughout the state are not subject to the strike, according to the state leadership of the NLC. The Akwa Ibom State State Secretary for Organized Labor, Alpha Marshall, signed a press release issued by the union stating that the strike will not have an impact on exam supervisors or school principals who oversee exams. The pupils who are currently taking the WASSCE at various examination centers throughout the state would not be impacted by the NLC and TUC’s nationwide indefinite strike. He said, “The exam will proceed as scheduled due to the previously mentioned reason, so please take note, school principals, exam supervisors, parents/guardians, and the general public.” https://genloaded.com.ng/news/uyo-activities-are-halted-as-the-akwa-ibom-nlc-joins-the-nationwide-strike/ |
