FIFA has announced that the winners of the 2025 Club World Cup will earn up to $125 million in prize money.

This update was confirmed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino in an official statement released on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, FIFA disclosed a total prize fund of $1 billion for the prestigious tournament, which is set to take place in the United States from June 14 to July 13, 2025.

Telecom giants MTN Group and Airtel Africa have announced a significant network infrastructure-sharing agreement focused on expanding mobile connectivity in Nigeria and Uganda, particularly targeting underserved regions.

This collaboration aims at optimizing costs while enhancing mobile service delivery in rural and remote areas, according to a joint statement released on Wednesday.

The companies indicated that agreements being considered include Radio Access Network sharing and collaborative fibre infrastructure projects, potentially involving the construction of new fibre networks.

Ralph Mupita, MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the increasing demand for data services across Africa.

“At MTN, we are driven by the vision of delivering digital solutions that drive Africa’s progress and will continue to see strong structural demand for digital and financial services across our markets,” he said.

He further explained, “To meet this demand, we continue to invest in coverage and capacity to ensure high-quality connectivity for our customers. That said, there are opportunities within regulatory frameworks for sharing resources to drive higher efficiencies and improve returns.”

Both companies have faced significant financial impacts due to currency fluctuations in Nigeria, where MTN and Airtel hold substantial market shares of 51.79% and 34.11%, respectively.

Sunil Taldar, CEO of Airtel Africa, emphasized the strategic advantages of infrastructure sharing:

“As we compete fiercely in the market on the strength of our brand, services and our offerings we are building common infrastructure, within the permissible regulatory framework,” Taldar stated.

“This provides a more robust and extensive digital highway to drive digital and financial inclusion at the same time avoiding duplication of expensive infrastructure to drive operational efficiencies and benefits for our customers.”

Following successful agreements in Nigeria and Uganda, the telecom operators are also considering similar partnerships in other markets, including Congo-Brazzaville, Rwanda, and Zambia.

Airtel Africa serves over 156 million customers across 14 sub-Saharan African countries, while MTN Group operates in 19 countries in Africa and the Middle East, serving approximately 287 million customers.

The Lagos State Police Command claimed its agents apprehended nine kidnappers on Thursday, while two escaped with gunshot wounds.

The command stated that the move was the result of credible and actionable intelligence about a dangerous and notorious gang of kidnappers planning to kidnap certain high-net-worth individuals in Lagos.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, confirmed this in a statement released on Friday.

Hundeyin added that after receiving the intelligence approximately two weeks ago, police meticulously monitored the situation and determined that the gang planned to strike on Thursday in the Ladipo region of Lagos State.

According to him, “The Command had been on the trail of this gang for the past eight months because of their many kidnappings of wealthy individuals in Isolo, Okota, Ejigbo, and Ladipo regions of Lagos State. We are delighted to announce that their reign of terror has effectively ended.

He explained that despite being caught off guard, the kidnappers did not give up easy, engaging police forces in a shootout.

SP Hundeyin added that the kidnappers surrendered to the police’s superior weaponry, with nine of them neutralised and two escaping with bullet wounds.

“They recovered four AK-47 rifles, four locally made semiautomatic pistols, nine AK-47 magazines, three walkie-talkies, one POS machine, and a loudspeaker.” They also retrieved their two operating vehicles, a black Toyota 4Runner and a blue Lexus RX350. Meanwhile, investigations are underway to apprehend the fleeing individuals,” he said.

Following the (NLC) Nigeria Labour Congress’s strike in the state, business operations have been suspended in the capital city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

As directed by the national body, the NLC, Akwa Ibom Chapter went on an indefinite strike on Monday, June 3.

According to Sunny James, the union’s chairperson, employees in the state will guarantee strict enforcement until the federal government accedes to their requests over the increased minimum wage.

The NLC Akwa Ibom Chapter will guarantee complete adherence to all national regulations. We’ll visit every office in the state to carry out the instruction. He stated.

The Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for 24,535 applicants in 2024 has been rescheduled by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Because of the significant non-compliance with its criteria in the centers of the impacted applicants, JAMB rescheduled the UTME.

Part of the statement says this: "The Board has meticulously examined the conduct and procedure of the 2024 UTME in certain centers where there is substantial evidence of non-compliance with the Board's standards.

As a result, on Saturday, June 22, 2024, 24,535 candidates have been rescheduled to retake the exam in their selected Examination Towns.

"In the meantime, the 3,921 unresolved 2024 UTME results have been made public.

Therefore, in order to find out their status, concerned candidates are advised to check their results starting on Saturday, June 1, 2024, by sending RESULT to 55019 or 66019. Candidates who are cleared will receive their results, while those who are rescheduled will be notified that their exam has been postponed.

With this release, 1,883,350 results have been released overall. The exam has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 22, 2024, two weeks from now. This will allow concerned candidates enough time to get ready for the test.
