Humbled 3-0 by Manchester City on Sunday, Arsenal cannot afford a repeat on Thursday if genuine ambitions still remain to claim a top four spot. Victory would move Arsene Wenger's side to seven points behind Tottenham in the final Champions League place and provide a glimmer of hope. Losing again would extinguish the flame and heap further scrutiny on a manager desperately trying to argue he deserves to stay in position in perpetuity. Sportsmail examines what went wrong at Wembley and how Arsenal could produce a shock win. Arsenal were humiliated by Manchester City in Sunday's Carabao Cup final at Wembley The Gunners - 10 points adrift of fourth place - cannot afford another slip-up on Thursday night Switch formation Wenger's flirtation with a back-three system in the winter of his career has always seemed at odds with the players at his disposal and the tactics did not work in the League Cup final. The personnel was significantly different to April's successful FA Cup semi-final, and this time City's wide players pinned Arsenal's full-backs so their attacking potential was nullified. A 4-2-3-1 formation would create an extra man in midfield and limit the need for another central defender – a position Arsenal have long struggled with. Sead Kolasinac and Hector Bellerin have enough energy to get up and down the flanks from a more conventional defensive start. Hector Bellerin has the energy and dynamism to give City problems on the flanks on Thursday Arsene Wenger surely won't go with a three-man defence again after Sunday's shambles Work harder Whatever the merits of Gary Neville's ultra critical assessment of Arsenal on Sunday, it is undeniable the hunger seemed to be absent all too quickly. Wigan showed that City are beatable through determined effort, and in particular applying pressure at key moments. Nobody expects Arsenal's players to run around at full pelt all game, but it was awkward to see some of them walking as City passed the ball around Wembley's wide expanse. Full athletic application is the minimum requirement against a side such as City. Arsenal were accused of not putting in enough effort during their Cup final humiliation Get the right midfield It was three years ago now, but the high-point of Arsenal's recent battles with the top six came in the 2-0 win at City from January 2015. The strength of that display came from a midfield duo of Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla, who controlled the pace of the game. City are much improved of course, and those two players will not feature now, but the principle still applies. Granit Xhaka has failed too many times to show reliability so perhaps it is time to replace him with a more orthodox defensive midfielder. Mohamed Elneny would be disciplined in patrolling across the pitch to snuff out City attacks and the statistics back up his effectiveness. Arsenal win 56.4 per cent with Elneny playing, and 45 per cent without, while the goals conceded per game goes down to one from 1.5. Granit Xhaka has failed to show the required reliability in midfield for some time now Mohamed Elneny could be a better option in the defensive midfield role against City Maximise Mesut Mesut Ozil remains a special player but all too frequently the German disappears in crunch games. This is an opportunity to challenge him to affect the contest decisively from his preferred No 10 role. Ozil needs to get City's centre-backs fearing the pass in behind. Constantly forcing Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi to turn around, chasing runs by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, could expose their defensive deficiencies. Mesut Ozil is Arsenal's main creative force but all-too-often disappears in the big games Be stronger at set pieces Pep Guardiola's side scoring through a blistering counter-attack or slick interchange of passes can sometimes not be helped. But twice on Sunday Arsenal conceded when the ball was dead. Claudio Bravo registering an assist Expected Results: Over 2.5 goals Source: www.surepredicts.com

Robbie Savage labelled the first half-an-hour of Tottenham's FA Cup replay with Rochdale 'one of the most bizarre, entertaining, shambolic first-halves I have ever seen in my life' as VAR once again prompted chaos and confusion. Twice within the first 30 minutes referee Paul Tierney caused disarray and lengthy delays to the action by consulting his video assistant. And twice the Wembley crowd were left in limbo as first Rochdale and then Spurs benefitted from overturned decisions. Paul Tierney was at the centre of a farce on Wednesday night as he relied heavily on VAR Tierney took 90 seconds to rule out Erik Lamela's strike for a foul inside the Rochdale box Fernando Llorente was penalised by the VAR for the slightest of tugs inside the penalty area The League One side's hopes of causing an upset looked to have been dealt an early blow when Erik Lamela turned home from close range with barely five minutes on the clock. But 90 seconds after the Argentina forward thought he'd scored, the goal was ruled out by Tierney for a contentious foul in the build-up by Fernando Llorente. 'It's a ridiculous decision,' Savage said on commentary for BT Sport. 'A ludicrous decision, it's not a clear and obvious foul by Llorente... (and) another question I would ask, why would ref not go and look at monitor himself?' Son Heung-min's goal on 23 minutes seemed to render the controversial call redundant as the Premier League flexed their muscle on home turf. But within five minutes the technology was again at the heart of the action. After Kieran Trippier was fouled by Matt Done, Tierney awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box. After another long consultation with his video assistant, however, the referee changed his decision again and gave Spurs a penalty. Thankfully, it appeared justice had been done. '(Done) has his arm round him, he's fouling him, it's outside the penalty area, (but) the offence continues into the penalty area so therefore it's a penalty,' former referee Chris Foy said. Tottenham Hotspur were originally awarded a free kick when Keiran Trippier was fouled However, having consulted VAR once more, the referee decided to award a penalty instead 'The VAR has come out correctly on this occasion and the decision is right.' In keeping with the choatic clash at Wembley, however, that was far from the end of the matter. Son stepped up and sent Josh Lillis the wrong way to secure his second of the night. But the South Korea international was called back by Tierney, who chalked off the goal and showed the forward a yellow card for stopping during his run-up. This time VAR confirmed the referee's decision. And moment's later Rochdale added salt to Spurs' wounds when Stephen Humphrys levelled the scores after 31 minutes of a gripping first half. Heung-Min Son stepped up to take the penalty and tucked his effort away from the spot However, Son was penalised for stopping his run up, a decision again left to VAR The South Korea international was also booked, as well as seeing his effort chalked off Source: www.surepredicts.com

Chelsea forward, Eden Hazard, has named his Belgium team-mates, Kevin De Bruyne and Radja Nainggolan among players he wants at Chelsea. When asked which Belgian he would like to see at Chelsea, Hazard named Manchester City’s De Bruyne and Roma’s Nainggolan. He told COPA90, “In Belgium we have players, good players. It’s not: ‘I play for Chelsea so I don’t talk to the guy from Tottenham’ – no, we are together. “In football it’s like this because, if it is not like this, all the national teams are in trouble.” Chelsea under Jose Mourinho sold De Bruyne to German side, Wolfsburg and within few seasons, he returned to England with Manchester City. The Belgian, when asked why he left Chelsea had previously told The Times:, “I just said I can play. I have no statistics – two games, what do you want me to do? “I had a feeling I wasn’t even going to play. Even if he said you’re going to play more games, from two games I was maybe going to go to five. It was, for me, a good decision to leave. ‘ “For them, in the end, it was also a good decision. They sold me for more money for a player who didn’t play.” Nainggolan, meanwhile, has been strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge and came close to joining the Blues ahead of the 2017/18 campaign. Whenever Chelsea plays and Victor Moses on the line up, he manages to trend on Twitter every time. The match between Manchester United and Chelsea has come and gone but Moses continues to be a subject of trend. The former Liverpool player who made his 23rd start for the Blues this season, according to fans has the poorest delivery. According to one fan, he says there is nothing more frustrating in this world than Victor Moses’ delivery. He gets in such good areas and has a lot of the ball. Surely a top RB / RWB is the summer priority for the club. What do you think?? For more football news, betting tips, players rating, transfer news visit www.surepredicts.com

Real Madrid's crisis is now history Against Alaves on Saturday, Real Madrid have the opportunity to go within four points of Atletico Madrid as they start to believe in sneaking past their local rivals. Despite a disastrous first half to their league campaign, Madrid's second round of matches have been a completely different story. Their last victory in the rearranged match against Leganes has given Los Blancos some much-needed confidence for the most crucial moments of the season. Madrid have played their last six games with a tally of five wins and one draw, a streak that has allowed them to increase their prospects in LaLiga as they now sit in third position. Great improvement On January 13, Madrid hit rock bottom after losing to Villarreal at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. That was the last day of the first round of LaLiga, as the Spanish giants held fourth spot, 19 points behind leaders Barcelona. In addition, they were only one point ahead of Villarreal and led Sevilla by three in the fight for Champions League qualification. Almost a month and a half later, the situation has greatly improved for Los Blancos. Now third in the table, Real have regained ten points and have a cushion of nine points over Sevilla. In addition, Madrid finished the first round with 20 goals less than Barcelona. Now they only are only four behind the Catalans thanks to the 26 times they have scored in their last six games.
