The All Progressives Congress has strongly warned the PDP not to to go ahead with its diabolical plan to declare vacant the seats of the five PDP Governors who recently defected to the APC, saying apart from being illegal and smacking of double standard, such a move has the potential to plunge the polity into chaos. In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said that even as the PDP has continued to lick the mortal wound inflicted on it by the loss of five preeminent Governors in one fell swoop, any attempt by the party (PDP) to act in desperation and declare the Governors’ seats vacant will be met with an unprecedented show of people power that will end, once and for all, the impunity of the PDP and the Presidency. ”We have irrefutable evidence that the PDP is desperately shopping for a pliant Judge who will be heavily induced to declare vacant the seats of the five Governors who recently defected to the APC. We also have the name of the lawyers who have been retained by the PDP for this hatchet job. ”We are in possession of the various nefarious legal options being explored by the villainous duo of the PDP and the Presidency but we hereby serve a strong notice to the duo that any attempt by anyone through any means other than what is provided for in section 188 of the 1999 Constitution as amended will not only have grave consequences but will leave the polity severely bruised. ”We know the PDP and the Presidency are anarchic and nihilistic, and will not mind to pursue any narrow and selfish objective, even if doing such can plunge the nation into crisis. But their cup is gradually getting full. Having got away with their trademark impunity in Delta and Anambra States, these lawless, reckless and feckless duo of maleficence now believe they can continue to act without regards to the laws of the land and with no scintilla of decency. ”We wish to state unequivocally that should the PDP go ahead with this plan, there will be widespread repercussions as the APC has resolved that henceforth, every act of impunity of the PDP and the Presidency will be met with stiff resistance in the form of a vociferous telegraphing of people power, the likes of which have not been witnessed in these parts,” it said. APC reminded the PDP and the Presidency that a party that boasts of 16 Governors….still counting…and has control of the National Assembly has what it takes to use people power to stop acts of impunity, disregard for the laws of the land and barbaric brigandage – and that is exactly what the APC will do in the event of any unlawful declaration of the five Governors’ seats vacant. The party also warned against any attempt by the PDP and the Presidency to turn back the hands of the clock as far as the cleaning up of the judiciary is concerned, by inducing a servile and disreputable Judge to do the duo’s bidding. ”We recognize the efforts of the present CJN to sanitize the Judiciary since she assumed the mantle of leadership but she should not allow any black leg to reverse the gains that have been recorded on the altar of unmitigated avarice. This is because if that happens, Nigerians will hold the Judiciary vicariously liable for the catastrophic consequences that may follow,” it said. Accusing the PDP of engaging in double standard, APC said ”For all of 14 years, elected members of the State Houses of Assembly as well as the National Assembly have been defecting mostly to the PDP and nocourt has ever declared their seats vacant. ”Late Senator Wahab Dosunmu and Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe, then of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), blazed the trail when they decamped to the PDP within a year of their election. Since then scores of elected lawmakers at state and federal levels have defected to the PDP without any eyebrows being raised or anyone declaring their seats vacant. ”When Governors Ikedi Ohakim of Imo State and Theodore Orji of Abia state, both elected on the platform of the PPA, and Governor Isah Yuguda of Bauchi state, who was elected on the platform of the ANPP, defected to the PDP, nobody declared their seats vacant. ”As a matter of fact, the PDP under late President Umar Yar’Adua organized an elaborate reception to welcome Gov. Yuguda to the PDP. Why then should the case of the five PDP Governors (still counting)who have joined the APC be different? Why is the PDP suddenly afraid of taking the same medicine it has been administering to others? Does it mean that all the bravado that has been displayed by the PDP, which says it is not bothered by the defection of the five Governors, is just a facade to hide its deep pain at the monumental loss?” the party queried. It also asked the PDP and the Presidency, if they can allow a rare moment of introspection, to go and read – and be guided by – the ruling of the Supreme Court after the PDP attempted to make then Vice President Atiku Abubakar to lose his seat and to also strip him of his privileges following his defection to the ACN. www.punchng.com/news/apc-warns-pdp-on-impeachment-plot-against-amaechi-kwankwaso-others/

BENIN—GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has appealed to the Head of Service of the Federation to prevail on some federal parastatals and agencies in the state to defray the outstanding N2 billion tax liabilities to the state government. Oshiomhole made the appeal yesterday when he granted audience to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Martin Uhomoibhi and Dr. Jamila Shuara, the Permanent Secretary, Special Duties, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, at Government House, Benin City. He said: “Just this morning (yesterday), I directed one of my commissioners to do a letter to Mr. President to draw his attention to the fact that federal ministries, departments and agencies are owing us over N2 billion unremitted tax. “We expect that given the fact that these are Federal Agencies they should respect the law, more so when it has to do with tax obligations. Whether federal, state or local governments, the common denominator is the welfare of our people. “Every tier of government has the legitimacy of that shared commitment. When all the three tiers of government work together, service delivery will, hopefully, be enhanced and our people will be the beneficiaries of what we do. “We also believe that regardless of who your employer is, if you live in this state, you are part and parcel of the state.” Governor Oshiomhole said that all those living and working in Edo State enjoyed the same rights and privileges, just as the people were expected to meet up with their obligations to the state. His said breaches of tax laws were criminal matters and implored the permanent secretary to prevail on the Presidency over the remittance of over N2 billion tax debt. Earlier, Ambassador Martin Uhomoibhi said they were in the state at the instance of the Head of Service of the Federation towards creating a bridge between Federal Civil Servants at the Federal Capital and those at the various state capitals. He commended the cordial relationship existing between federal and state civil servants and lauded Governor Oshiomhole for his developmental strides. source: www.vanguardngr.com/2013/12/oshiomhole-tasks-fg-agencies-payment-n2bn-tax-debt/ |
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has been named Forbes African of the Year for his reforms in the country’s farming sector. A report by Reuters quoted Forbes Africa’s Editor, Mr. Chris Bishop, as saying, “He is a man on a mission to help Africa feed itself.” Adesina was chosen ahead of some of Africa’s most prominent businesspeople: Aliko Dangote and Jim Ovia, also from Nigeria; South Africa’s Patrice Motsepe; and Zimbabwe’s Strive Masiyiwa. The report notes that although the country is one of the world’s biggest oil exporters, most Nigerians live in poverty, especially in the rural areas. Bishop said he hoped the award would “encourage the rest of the continent to grow more of its own food.” Analysts say Nigeria’s economy has long been dominated by oil, while agriculture has been ignored, even though it supports far more people. Adesina said he wanted to help the people to become rich through farming. “My goal is to make as many millionaires, maybe even billionaires, from agriculture as possible,” he said, in his acceptance speech. Aliyu Tanko from the BBC Hausa says Mr. Adesina has introduced more transparency into the supply and distribution of fertiliser, which had previously been marred by massive corruption. Most Nigerians still live in poverty, especially in the rural areas. The minister has also urged Nigerians to grow more food crops, especially cassava. In January, Adesina announced a scheme to hand out 10 million mobile phones to farmers to “drive an agriculture revolution” so that they can find out the latest market information. The phones are also used to get vouchers for seeds and fertiliser. However, Reuters says this goal has not yet been achieved, noting that there is no mobile network coverage in many rural areas. The main opposition party criticised the scheme as a “mischievous vote-catching exercise.” www.punchng.com/business/business-economy/forbes-names-akinwumi-adesina-african-of-the-year/

A 19-year-old man, Usman Joshua, has been arrested by the police in Ado Ekiti for defiling a three-year-old girl. Joshua, who lives in the same building with the girl’s parents, was said to have lured her into his room with biscuit. Her mother, Wuraola, said she noticed that her daughter was not feeling comfortable when she returned to their apartment by evening. A closer look by her mother showed that the little girl had been defiled. The girl allegedly told her mother that she was playing within the compound when Joshua told her to come and take biscuit. Wuraola said, “I am the biological mother of Pelumi. On November 3, around 5.05pm, I saw my daughter outside with her pant almost falling off her body. I discovered that someone had poured sperm all over her body. I asked where she was coming from and she said it was one daddy that took her to his room. “She said the daddy slept on top of her after giving her some biscuit. “She took me to the room where the man was. I called my landlady and we questioned him together. He confessed to have committed the crime. I reported the incident to the police.” Joshua said he lost control, adding that he did not know what came over him. He said, “The girl followed me inside my room and started playing with me. She climbed upon my chest and played with my private part. “When I got erected, I could no longer control myself. I removed her pant. I could not penetrate but I discharged sperm on her and let her go. That was my first time with her. “I have never done such a thing with a girl of her age. I don’t know the kind of spirit that came over me.” The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi, said, “Based on our investigation, Joshua had sex with the girl. He was aware of her age, but took advantage of her. “Medical report showed that the suspect had carnal knowledge of her and stained her body with sperm. “Report shows that her vulva was normal but the hymen was strongly suggestive of sexual defilement.” Babayemi said the suspect would soon be charged to court. www.punchng.com/metro/man-19-defiles-3-year-old-girl-in-ekiti/ |
