It ’ s Valentine period and , well , some healthy doses of sex are going to take place among lovers . But, how long should sex last for it to be considered fantastic or good ? Generally , stories of sex that lasts all night long tend to impress listeners. However , researchers are saying that in reality, good sex should not last more than 13 minutes! Indeed, scientific studies suggest that the more preferred duration of sex, on average , is between five and 13 minutes. And though some sexual encounters might last a slightly longer period , the average time of 13 minutes is really the most common . Some studies , such as a 2005 study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine , even report a median time of between 5 . 4 and 7. 5 minutes! In 2012 , a team of researchers from the University of New Brunswick measured the duration of both the IELT and pre-intimacy . IELT , meaning “ intravaginal ejaculatory latency time , ” is defined as the time between the moment an erect penis enters a vagina and the moment that penis begins to come. The study asked men and women in relationships to report how long an ideal pre-intimacy session should last, as well as ideal intercourse . Then they timed their actual sex lives in the comfort of their own bedrooms . The couples reported an average of 11 to 13 minutes of pre-intimacy , and seven to eight minutes of intercourse . Sex expert, Tracey Cox , warns that ideally , sex may not last longer than 13 minutes because the natural lubrication women enjoy doesn’ t last for ever . “ Therefore, going for too long might prove painful , especially if the intercourse is in one position , ” the sex guru says . Cox notes that there’ s a perception that women crave longer sex, saying , “ while some women enjoy uninterrupted, prolonged sex, apparently, the majority really don ’ t. ” Sex therapists argue that sex is considered “ too short ” when it lasts one to two minutes. “ Adequate” is three to seven minutes, and “ desirable ” is seven to 13 minutes . The range for “ too long” went up to 30 minutes. Anything longer, like “ more than 40 , ” is legendary, they enthuse. But a 2004 study in the Journal of Sex Research that did actually include pre-intimacy found that on average , people were indulging in 11 - 13 minutes of pre-intimacy , followed by 7 - 8 minutes of intercourse The bottom line: Sex is more than just intercourse , and the time couples allot to it should include the time to generate arousal both mentally and physically , says sex therapist and licensed marriage and family therapist, Dr . Ian Kerner, author of She Comes First . “ That can mean lots of touching and pre-intimacy , sharing a fantasy , reading erotica , watching porn together , or roleplaying some sort of kinky scene , ” Ian says. With long pre-intimacy is the probability of getting fully aroused , which can help you achieve orgasm more quickly — an attestation to the possible short duration of real act of sex. |
As appropriate, today , being the day that precedes the Valentine ’ s Day, has been designated the International Condom Day. It is a day that has been set aside to help people increase their awareness on the use of condom and its role in preventing unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV and AIDS, when used correctly . The Country Director of AIDS Health Care Foundation, Dr . Adetayo Towolawi , said condom plays an important role in the prevention of HIV /AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. Noting that the day is a prelude to the Valentine ’ s Day , Towolawi said if adequate care is not taken , when people share time with their lovers , HIV can spread within the period . He said , “ In order to prevent the spread of HIV / AIDS while expressing sexuality , we need you to take care of your sexual and reproductive health by using condom correctly . ” The World Condom Day is observed on February 13 annually . Since its inception in 2009 , it has been an informal observance celebrated in conjunction with Valentine ’ s Day . Dos and don ’ ts of condom use • You must wear it . • Wear it before you start sex. • Don ’ t remove it until sex is over . • Don ’ t unroll it before wearing it : put it on and continue to unroll it until penis is fully covered . • Leave room at the tip to serve as a reservoir for semen . • Don ’ t allow air into the condom, otherwise it may rupture or fall off . • If you discover you wore it inside out, simply throw it away and open a new pack. • Unroll it completely over your erect penis . • Don’ t open the condom pack with sharp object ; it may puncture the condom. • Check the condom before using it . There must be no damage. • Go for lubricated condoms . Dry ones break easily . • Watch the kind of lubrication you use if the condom doesn’ t come lubricated . • Ensure the condom is intact on your penis during withdrawal . • Don ’ t ever reuse a condom! • Don ’ t store condoms in the freezer , water or the oven. Follow the package instructions on where you can store them. http://punchng.com/today-is-international-condom-day/

By Omeiza Ajayi ABUJA – In apparent response to last week’s anti-Buhari protests across the country, a coalition of pro-Buhari organizations under the aegis of Citizens Support for Good Governance in Nigeria (SGGN) said it is mobilizing Nigerians of all shades for a mega rally tagged #iSupportPresidentBuhari to be held across Abuja, Lagos, Kaduna and Kano this week. The protesters in support of Buhari Organizers of the event said such show of support has become necessary for a leader like President Muhammadu Buhari who they say is doing the “right things”. Co-convener of the rally Comrade Moses Abdullahi, explained that before the emergence of President Buhari, “Nigeria, our beloved country, the greatest black nation on mother earth has been a shadow of itself for the past 16 years. As a people, we witnessed the systemic looting and raping of our collective resources and consciousness by a few, with far reaching psychological damages which has rendered us bitter, bruised, battered and hopeless”. He said the support rally for President Buhari will take place in Abuja on Tuesday and Thursday, Kaduna and Kano on Wednesday while it will end on Thursday in Lagos. Speaking further, he said; “Nigeria today is a nation undergoing rebirth. A people seeking a new path to higher attainment. A diverse community where a new awakening of self discovery can bring about a better economy for us all. “We have a leader who we all know is different. We know he will not steal our resources. We know he will not sleep until things are made right for us and our children. We know he means well. What then must we do to help get it right faster? “We must support President Muhammfu Buhari because with him, it can only get better. Our economy today is in chaos not because of him, but because of the lies and deceit of 16 years he inherited. PMB is not out for quick fix measures, he is out to make sure the foundation of this change is well laid such that even in the next 100 years, we will never suffer what we have gone through before today. The pains and agony of today are temporary. If we rally round PMB and support him, we will ensure all the enemies of our progress & agents of corruption (who only want thing to continue like before) will be shamed & exposed.”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/pro-buhari-mega-rally-hits-major-cities/ Lalasticlala

Prof. Babatunde Rabiu, a space expert says the solar eclipse expected in Nigeria and some countries on Feb. 10 and on Feb. 11 is a natural occurrence that causes no harm. Newsmen report that the eclipse of the moon is expected to take place on Feb. 10, starting from Chile and will be seen across parts of South America in the morning. The eclipse will be seen across the South Atlantic Ocean and expected to end in south western parts of Africa at sunset. Rabiu, the Director, Centre for Atmospheric Research (CAR), Anyigba, Kogi, Rabiu told NAN on Friday that the solar eclipse was a natural phenomenon that could be exciting to watch and could not cause any harm. He said that it happens as a result of partial covering on the moon but should not be worshipped as being done in some societies. “It can be an exciting view for the public and causes little or no harm to humans. “Solar eclipse of the moon is a natural phenomenon that happens because the objects in the universe are in motion. Lunar Eclipse “The earth is in motion and the moon is also in motion, the moon moves around the earth in an orbit and takes about 27 to 28 days to complete the cycle. “What happens is that, in the night you can see it clearly, but certain times some things might cover it and it is out of view, this covering is the eclipse which can be a partial or total. “It is not a phenomenon to be worshipped or given a special attention, it is just a natural occurrence that can be exciting for viewing,” he said. Another expert, Dr Narcial Russell, the Director of Missions in Africa, said that eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and the Earth and the Moon fully or partially blocks the Sun. “This can happen only at new moon when the sun and moon are in conjunction as seen from earth in an alignment. “I comes approximately once every 18 months on a total solar eclipse,“ she said. The director, who was also a medical researcher, said that the lunar eclipse looked like a streaks or smudges across the night sky. Newsmen report that the lunar eclipse is the first of the two lunar eclipses to occur in 2017 overnight on Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11. The event is a minor eclipse also known as penumbral lunar eclipse. During a total lunar eclipse, sky watchers can often see the moon turn intense blood red colour as it passes through the central shadow of the earth. The February lunar eclipse is one of the several minor lunar eclipses leading to the next total eclipse of the moon in early 2018. However, the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASDA) did not issue its usual statement on the occurrence and the observance of the lunar eclipse NASDA was established on May 5, 1990 with the broad objective to pursue the development and application of space science and technology for the socio-economic development of the country. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/nigeria-experience-lunar-eclipse-midnight-feb-10/

Dear Bunmi, My husband and I sometimes have MouthAction whenever I am having my period. The last time I gave him one, I noticed the top of his penis looked a bit sore, but we went ahead regardless. Now, the sore is worse and the inside of my mouth is infected as if I have mouth ulcer. Could we have infected each other with say thrush? Kairat, by e-mail. Dear Kairat, Thrust is a yeast infection commonly found in the vagina. If you have thrush, your husband could pick it up during sex. It can infect the man’s glan – the helmet at the end of his penis under his foreskin-making it red and sore, sometimes with flecks of white, cheesy discharge. And yes, MouthAction could pass it into your mouth. Go to a reputable chemist and ask for treatment for your mouth and vagina and clotrimazole cream for your husband’s penis. If your symptoms, or his, don’t clear up, then check with your doctor – sometimes thrush in odd places can be a sign that something else is going on. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/reaction-oral-sex/ |

The President of Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (ECCIMA), Rev. Ugochukwu Chime, made this known in Enugu on Tuesday. Chime said that the fair would hold between March 31 and April 10. President Buhari He said that the 2017 fair, with the themed: “Promoting Nigeria’s Industrial Sector and SMEs for Inclusive and Robust Economy’’, would take place at the Permanent Trade Fair Complex, off the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. “It is incumbent, as expected, that the fair will be declared open by His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, President, Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ he said. The ECCIMA boss noted that good number of bodies and business organisations as well as government agencies had indicated interest to participate in the fair. “We wish to acknowledge that a good number of enquiries are being made concerning participation in the fair so far,’’ he said. He said that the chamber had enhanced its online platform for registration, exhibition and marketing. “As part of our efforts to boost the success of the fair, we shall as it is strategic, be commencing the systematic sensitization tours and consolidating our marketing with visits to key stakeholders both in public and private sectors in different parts of the country. “We have equally put in place measures to ensure stable and quality supply of electricity and water during the fair. “Relatedly, we shall soon commence the overhaul and maintenance of the two stand-by generator sets in the fair complex, in event of public power failure,’’ he said. According to him, it is equally interesting to note that we have commissioned the reinforcement of the distribution network of electricity lines inside the fair complex including the changing of a good number of wooden electric poles to concrete poles. “This has become necessary as the weak wooden electric poles used in the initial networking had to be replaced to enhance stable electricity supply. “We shall continue to gradually replace the wooden poles with concrete poles, particularly those that are weak. “On security, we are pleased to note, that we have not had any security breach/problem since we started hosting our fairs in the trade fair complex within the Golf Estate area about six years ago,’’ he said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/buhari-attend-enugu-trade-fair/

A former governor of the old Anambra State , Dr . Chukwuemeka Ezeife , tells TOBI AWORINDE that the emergence of an Igbo president in 2019 would put an end to ethnic- based marginalisation in Nigeria what do you think of calls for an Igbo president in 2019 , amplified by former President Olusegun Obasanjo ? Obasanjo is not ordinary . There is a story I will tell you: When Obasanjo was in prison , many people were preparing for president , including myself . One morning , my wife , Ugoeze , told me that I should not waste my money on this presidency matter and that the issue had been settled . I said , ‘ What do you mean ?’ She said , ‘ Obasanjo is going to be president . ’ I exclaimed and said , ‘ Obasanjo is in prison . ’ But she said she saw Abdulsalami Abubakar decorating Obasanjo as president . You can remember that since then , he has been very crucial to whoever becomes president in Nigeria . He chose ( Umaru ) Yar ’ Adua to run for ( president on the platform of ) the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party ). He made ( Goodluck) Jonathan run as a south- easterner by virtue of the death of Yar ’ Adua. Even Buhari, Obasanjo had a hand in his emergence and victory. So, it is not easy to just dismiss Obasanjo ’ s statement , especially as he has good reason . He says injustice and marginalisation cause problems among peoples and groups . He didn ’ t even look at the national level only . He mentioned Ogun State and said Ogun West should have the governorship . It has never had the governorship . He says continuing with injustice will cause crises . Obasanjo can father than most of us and I think he appreciates justice . Look at the way Buhari is pushing the South - East out of Nigeria, denying them appointment, denying those who were in service appointment and replacing them with other people . Again , look at the newspapers today (Tuesday ), $ 30 bn borrowed for Nigeria ; not one kobo going to the South - East . So, it is clear . When Obasanjo was president , nobody was killed for standing for Biafra . Same thing happened with Yar ’ Adua, nobody was killed for standing with Biafra . The same thing goes for Jonathan . But Buhari started killing our people anywhere he saw them. I think it is obvious: Obasanjo saw all these things and thought of what has happened before making his comments . I accept his comments and I think it is fair because it was just two days after a group of people told me that they were working for ( the emergence of an ) Igbo president in 2019 . We have been out of central power for so long , so we are not as influential as we should have been. But now , with Obasanjo ’ s help , we must reorganise and restrategise . How come there has been no Igbo president all this while ? The issue of rotation was agreed long ago . In fact, I was the Chairman of the Power Sharing Committee at the 2005 (national ) conference . We recommended rotation across the board . But it didn ’ t quite start . Now , look at Nigeria . The way we are aggrieved , we were just facing disintegration and collapse. I don ’ t want the disintegration and collapse of Nigeria, but if we continue with injustice , unfairness , iniquity , marginalisation , breaking the constitution by not giving equal recognition to the various zones , things will continue like this. I don ’ t see any saving grace. God created our country great. He had a purpose; that Nigeria should be a rallying point and big brother for all blacks . He endowed us stupendously with surplus resources. Nigeria has failed because of monumental corruption that has eaten deep into every segment of our society . What we need to do in Nigeria is not to increase injustice , iniquity , unfairness , and marginalisation , but to fear God . We must eliminate corruption and remake Nigeria. Only a new Nigeria can make progress . We have already failed so woefully . There ’ s nothing to help us survive , except by making Nigeria a fair place. Do you see any obstacles before the Igbo in the 2019 presidential race ? Nobody can take it as a guaranteed outcome . There will be obstacles , some from inside and some from outside. If it appears to be the will of God that his purpose for Nigeria will be achieved , it is most likely that an Igbo man will emerge as the president and take Nigeria to greatness more than ever . That is without prejudice to Fulani , Hausa , Yoruba or any other group in Nigeria. Every group will gain from Igbo presidency of Nigeria . No group will lose out, not even the herdsmen . What do you mean by internal and external obstacles ? There are problems in Nigeria now . Politicians always want to win . Some people want to win election and they look for where they can go . Some of them would rig the results and become the elected person. I was told by some people in the North that many people in Anambra are trying to go to the APC (All Progressives Congress ). That is an internal problem right now , although no original Igbo man can go for that . And if any Igbo person goes for that , that person will never win election in Igboland for the rest of his life . That is an internal problem among the Igbo . It cannot be guaranteed but efforts are being made . We heard of the governor of Imo State — a governor ! — telling us to forget the presidency in 2019 . It is good that it was he who said it because nobody takes him seriously anymore because of his past activities . But that is the kind of internal problem we are already having. Outside , you have major parties : you have the APC and the PDP working very hard to keep Nigeria corrupt . If there is a party that comes out preaching the truth, preaching honesty , integrity , justice and fairness, Nigeria is going to surprise people , instead of continuing with this bankrupt system . Will you support Buhari if he endorses someone from Igboland for president in 2019? Our life , our future and our prospects are in the hands of God . The only thing Buhari is good at is killing our people and depriving them of anything that is to go to them. Are you prepared for opposition to an Igbo president across ethnic divides ? There will be opposition from the Fulani . I don ’ t know about the Hausa . I think they are trying to determine when they will answer their father ’ s names. The Fulani adopted a mentality of superiority and an Igbo presidency will be the best thing to happen to the Fulani — not the highest class of Fulani , but the ordinary Fulani . Over 90 per cent of the Fulani will gain more from an Igbo presidency than from Buhari’ s presidency. What is your reaction to those who believe there is no candidate in Igboland who is popular among every section of the country ? That is a very big lie . It is just that we are used to not considering them ( Igbo ). There are so many — uncountable . From every village in the East , you can get a president . We are gifted . Go to America. Among the professionals there , who are the dominant people ? Among the politicians there, who are dominant? Look , there is just no way to deny God ’ s gift to our people . I could even roll out some names for you , but there is no point doing that. I know that Nigerians know that if they want to rise , they will have to look for Igbos. For as long as they keep the Igbo down , Nigeria will stay down. Do you think that Jonathan’ s presidency will hurt or help the emergence of a president from the South- East ? I don ’ t know . But remember that Jonathan went to Sokoto State sometime last year , and what happened ? They were asking him to come back. From Sokoto , people were chanting , ‘ Come back, Jonathan . Come back, Jonathan . ’ Besides , the man ended (his presidency) on the best of notes , surrendering to Buhari even before the results were read out, no matter the quality of the results . So , this is something for which we should enjoy, not lose . How will the detention of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra , Nnamdi Kanu , affect the possibility of an Igbo president ’ s emergence ? I believe that Buhari will change his mind and release him . In fact, within this year because all that he is doing with it is setting a trap for Igbos. They will come out and say , “ Release Kanu ” and they are shot down and killed , wiped out. So, if it is a bait that Kanu is being used for or a trap to get the Igbo out in numbers , I think he will be tired of that and release him . http://punchng.com/obasanjo-right-2019-time-ezeife/

President Muhammadu Buhari is sick, but not terminally ill , The PUNCH gathered on Sunday . A top government official , who spoke to one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity , said this shortly after the Presidency announced Buhari’ s decision to extend his two - week vacation. Before now , the Presidency had insisted that the President was not sick , saying he would only use the opportunity of his short vacation to undergo check- ups. But the government official admitted on Sunday that Buhari was sick. He , however , insisted that the President was not ill. “ The President is sick. But it will not be correct to say he is terminally ill. Illness has more to do with terminal disease. The President is only under the weather; he is not terminally ill, ” he explained. Before the announcement , however , arrangements were on to receive Buhari in Abuja , on Sunday , in preparation for his resumption on Monday. Officials were put on the alert pending the confirmation from the Protocol Unit on the time the President would arrive . The National Youth Council of Nigeria had also said it had mobilised 15 , 000 youths across the country to join in receiving Buhari at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport , Abuja . As of the time the statement on the extension was released , State House correspondents were on standby to join the delegation that would receive the President . The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity , Mr . Femi Adesina , had , penultimate week , in an interview with CNBC Africa , monitored in Abuja insisted that Buhari was not ill. Adesina had insisted that Buhari was only in London for vacation and was not in any hospital . He had said , “ The President is in London on vacation . He is not in any hospital and he is not ill. “ When he was travelling last week , the statement we put out was that he was going on vacation and during the vacation, he would do routine medical check - up and nothing has changed from what we pushed out last week . ” Earlier on Sunday , the Presidency had announced that Buhari’ s 10 - day vacation to the UK had been extended . The extension was contained in a three - paragraph statement made available to journalists by Adesina . Adesina said the extension was necessary to allow the President complete a series of tests recommended by his doctors and get the results . Although he said Buhari had already dispatched a letter to the National Assembly on the extension, he did not specify the duration of the extension. The statement read , “ President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the National Assembly , today , February 5, 2017 , informing it of his desire to extend his leave in order to complete and receive the results of a series of tests recommended by his doctors . “ The President had planned to return to Abuja this ( Sunday ) evening , but was advised to complete the test cycle before returning . The notice has since been dispatched to the Senate President , and Speaker, House of Representatives . “ Mr . President expresses his sincere gratitude to Nigerians for their concern , prayers and kind wishes. ” Shortly after Buhari left Nigeria penultimate Thursday for London , there were reports that he had passed on in a London hospital . The Presidency had since denied the reports . ‘ Senate has received Buhari ’ s letter’ When contacted, the Special Adviser to the Senate President on Media and Publicity , Mr . Yusuph Olaniyonu , confirmed the transmission of the letter from the Presidency to the leadership of the National Assembly . He however declined to disclose the content of the letter . “ I can confirm to you that a letter has been transmitted from the Presidency to the Senate , ” he said . However , a source at the Office of the President of the Senate , who spoke on condition of anonymity as the letter was meant to be announced to lawmakers on the floor of the Senate during plenary , said Saraki had yet to receive the letter in person . He said , “ I ’ ve been able to confirm that the letter had been transmitted to the Senate . Saraki has been informed about it but he has not collected it , maybe because he is currently out of town . ” The Chairman , Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs , Senator Sabi Abdullahi , when asked if the lawmakers would suspend their current recess to consider Buhari’ s letter , said he was somewhere in his constituency ( Niger North Senatorial District) and would not speak on the matter without having all the details . Also , the Leader of the House of Representatives , Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila , told The PUNCH , on Sunday , that there was no need to reconvene the House for the purpose of considering Buhari’ s letter . Gbajabiamila , a lawyer , explained that the President had already done the most important thing by triggering off the constitutional process to avoid a vacuum and to ensure that there was no crisis. He advised Nigerians to stop spreading rumours as Buhari clearly gave the reason he would not return to the country for now . Part of an electronic mail he sent to The PUNCH , read , “ I do not believe there is a need to reconvene for purposes of considering the letter . As you know , a President can go on leave and also extend same if there is a need to . “ The important thing is there is no power vacuum for as long as a President or Governor is absent . “ The constitutional safeguard has been triggered off and there is no constitutional crisis. “ The President did give the reason for the extension. The reason is not unusual and we should not give in to speculation and unfounded rumours . ” I didn ’ t speak on Buhari ’ s return – Mohammed Meanwhile , the Minister of Information and Culture , Alhaji Lai Mohammed , has denied speaking on the return of Buhari. While the nation awaits Buhari’ s return , Mohammed said in a statement , on Sunday , that the reports attributed to him , claiming that the President wouldn ’ t return because of faulty aircraft , was false. The minister, in a statement by his aide , Mr . Segun Adeyemi , said he did not speak with anyone . The statement added , “ The minister has not spoken to anyone on the issue of the President ’ s return , hence this report is another from the stable of the purveyors of fake news and should be disregarded . ” PDP, APC clash over President ’ s health status Meanwhile , the National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party called on Buhari to tell Nigerians the true state of his health. The main opposition party was reacting to the inability of the President to return to Nigeria from the UK , where he had been on holiday for more than 10 days . The PDP said it was wrong for the President to also send letter to the National Assembly , extending his leave, without telling Nigerians when he would resume . Spokesperson for the Senator Ahmed Makarfi - led Caretaker Committee , Mr . Dayo Adeyeye , stated this in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents . But the ruling All Progressives Congress berated the PDP, saying the opposition party should pray for the President instead of spreading rumours. The PDP spokesman , who was a former Minister of State for Works , however , said it was wrong for the President and his handlers to be trivialising the health of the President . He said the President had chosen a wrong approach to address the issue of his health since he assumed office . He said , “ The President should know he is not a private citizen . “ He should know that Nigerians are the ones paying his health bills and therefore , he should tell them the true state of his health . “ He should not treat Nigerians with levity and he should also know what is obtainable in civilised countries. Nigeria is not a jungle . “ Imagine the President talking about a leave extension but not saying when he would resume ?” Adeyeye stated that there was no way the President could claim to be awaiting the outcome of medical tests without definite dates . “ Medical tests have dates of collection of results . It can’ t be open - ended without dates, ” he said . But the APC urged the PDP to join other well - meaning Nigerians to pray for the President instead of sensing an opportunity to get even . The National Publicity Secretary of the APC , Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi , said this in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents on Sunday. Abdullahi stated , “ This is the President of the country. The elections are over ; he is our President , he is the President of Nigeria not that of the APC or the PDP . If the President has told us that he needs to stay back to do some other medical things , it behoves us , as responsible citizens , to pray for him and stop sensing an opportunity to retaliate. “ Does the PDP know more than what we have been told? What we know is what we have been told. “ We believe that the President has demonstrated an acute sense of responsibility . We are all living witnesses to our recent history where a President travelled and did not even communicate to the National Assembly the appropriate document to make the then Vice - President act in his stead. “ But this is a President that, on every occasion that he has to travel , he not only communicate to the National Assembly , but creates the enabling environment and the space for the Vice - President to act as President in his absence . “ I don ’ t know why people will start going green in the eyes as if we are actually hoping that tragedy befalls this country. “ The PDP should not behave in a way that will make Nigerians begin to think that it is actually spreading the rumour that the President is dead. ” Also , the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese in Anambra State , Most Rev . Paulinus Ezeokafor , on Sunday , asked Buhari to show himself to Nigerians to douse the tension in the land . Ezeokafor , who spoke to journalists at the annual meeting with the Religious Council in the diocese at St. Patrick ’ s Cathedral , Awka , said it was normal that people asked questions about the health of their President as he was not a private citizen . The cleric added , “ We pray that he comes back in good health, those asking about his state of health have the right to know where their President is and how he is doing. “ It is normal to be sick because he is a human being like any other person. “ The interest in Buhari’ s state of health is like the way people , all over the world , were worried when the late Pope John Paul 11 and Nelson Mandela were sick in hospital . “ It is high time he said something so that the suspicion and guessing will die down. ” http://punchng.com/pdp-asks-buhari-declare-health-status-president-extends-vacation/ |
Nobel laureate , Wole Soyinka , has berated the Nigerian police for seeking to stop the protest planned by a musician , 2 face Idibia , against Federal Government alleged non- performance . He described the police action as undemocratic . Though 2 face has backed down on the protest scheduled for Monday (today ) in Lagos citing security concern as reason , the National Association of Nigerian Students , the Enough is Enough group and a popular comedian , Olaseyitan Lawrence , popularly known as Seyilaw, have said in spite of the musician ’ s action , the protest would not be called off . Soyinka ’ s position was contained in an article he sent to an online medium, SaharaReporters , on Sunday . The Nobel laureate , who said he had sent a message to the Inspector- General of Police , through the Lagos State Commissioner of Police , Fatai Owoseni , declared that he was shocked to learn from media reports that the office of the IG could issue a statement stopping the protest . He described the action as “ a huge disappointment , a disservice to the cause of democracy, tolerance of dissent , and principle of inclusive governance . ” Soyinka said , “ The police attempt to reverse the hands of the democratic clock is even more appalling at a time when open demonstrations are taking place all over the world against the policies of a recently elected President of the United States , (Donald Trump ) , whose democratic formula allegedly serves as Nigeria ’ s adopted model . Across numerous states of that federated nation , ongoing at this very moment, is the public expression of rejection of a President ’ s policy that has also pitted the executive against the judiciary . We have heard of no preventive action by the police , or arrests of demonstrators . “ Again and again , efforts , both under military and civilian orders have been made to stifle the rights to freedom of expression by Nigerian governments – Buhari, Babangida , Obasanjo , Abacha , Jonathan … . and now again , Buhari ? These efforts have been, and will always be resisted. It is a moral issue , as old as settled humanity . It has been settled in other parts of the world. Nigeria cannot be an exception, not as long as her citizens refuse to accept the designation of second , even third - rate citizens . ” Soyinka urged the police to respect the constitutional rights of Nigerians . He said , “ I hope that, even at this eleventh hour, legality and the democratic imperative will prevail . Finally, I shall be less than honest if I do not add the following, mostly directed as a warning to the very polity on whose behalf the democratic war is joined , again and again : “ Minus a minuscule but highly voluble minority , mostly of pitiably retarded polluters of the common zones of public interventions , I do not know of any citizens of civilised community who do not subscribe to the fundamental Right of the Freedom of Expression in any form, as long as it is peaceful , and non- injurious to humanity . I would hate to conclude that the security agencies , or the government they serve , at this stage of national development and recent history , would choose to align themselves with such an unteachable minority . ” Meanwhile , Seyilaw has expressed his disappointment at 2 face ’ s decision to opt out of the planned rally. Seyilaw said though he understood 2 face ’ s concern , he was not deterred and “ God knows I will still be at the stadium tomorrow whether people gather there or not. “ I have a right to be at the stadium too, ” Seyilaw wrote on his Instagram page on Sunday . Also , the Enough is Enough group , in a statement on Sunday by its Executive Director , Yemi Adamolekun , insisted that it would participate in the protest, which is scheduled to hold in Lagos and Abuja , even though 2face , who invited the group to join the protest, had on Saturday night said he was backing out based on security concerns . Adamolekun said , “ 2face Idibia ( 2 Baba) informed us late last night that ongoing conversations with security agencies have not allayed his security concerns and so he had decided not to participate in a physical protest . We thanked him for inviting us when he first decided on this protest, and informed him that we believe it is important , despite the risks , to continue with the demands , for the sake of Nigerians who have put their trust in this movement . ” Also , the Deputy Coordinator of NANS in the South - West, Mr . Saheed Afolabi , who spoke with one of our correspondents on the telephone on Sunday , said it was good that 2 face came up with the idea but his withdrawal from it would not stop those , who had indicated their interest to participate from going ahead with the protest . However , the Chairman of the Civil Societies Coalition for Emancipation of Osun State , Mr . Suleiman Adeniyi , said his group would make its intention on the planned known later. http://punchng.com/soyinka-knocks-police-plotting-scuttle-anti-fg-protest/ |
The Nigerian police said on Thursday that they would not allow an anti - government protest planned in Lagos by music star 2 Baba. The popular artist , whose real name is Innocent Idibia , called on Nigerians earlier this week to march on February 6 in protest of the government ’ s handling of the country’ s economic crisis. “ Information reaching us revealed that some hoodlums are planning to hijack the peaceful protest . As such, we won ’ t allow it to hold in Lagos , ” Lagos police commissioner Fatai Owoseni told AFP . “ We know that 2Face does not have the capacity to contain such a crowd and we will not fold our hands and watch while things go out of hand , ” Owoseni said . In a video posted on his Facebook account Tuesday , 2 Face urged Nigerians to come out in a “ peaceful and articulate manner ” for the march . “ The need for urgent solutions to the challenges facing Nigerians has become very clear, ” he said in the video . “ Things are not getting better for the majority , we are still where we are , poor and desperate . I will no longer be quiet. ” It ’ s unusual in Nigeria for a celebrity to take such a vocal political position . But when 2 Baba floated the idea of a protest last month the idea quickly gained traction in a country frustrated by a galloping inflation rate and sluggish growth. Nigeria ’ s fortunes fell with the collapse in the global price of oil , triggering a recession that has been aggravated by rebel attacks on oil infrastructure and controversial monetary policies , which have led to a debilitating shortage of dollars .
