Nairaland / General / Ebubemonso Begs Youths To Shun Electoral Violence by gisthippo: 2:34pm On Feb 18, 2019
Ebubemonso: The Spiritual Director, Holy Ghost Adoration Ministry, Uke, Anambra State, Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, popularly known as Fr. Ebubemonso, yesterday literally wept for Nigeria on the sufferings Nigerians are facing, insisting that this Saturday’s general election determines the future of Nigeria and it is a time for change to build a new Nigeria.

He cried out to all Nigerians to be part of the imminent change by voting massively on Saturday for better governance and assured future for their children even those yet unborn.
Ebubemonso said President Muhammadu Buhari has wasted the goodwill of millions of Nigerians who voted him in and urged Nigerians to vote their choice on Saturday as he is a total failure and a disappointment to Nigerians. He said any further chance to Buhari and APC is to mortgage the future of Nigerians. He encouraged all to enthrone a new Nigeria with their votes with the wind of genuine change for future of Nigeria blowing.

He therefore appealed to electorates to come out and vote to determine the new Nigeria everyone is yearning for even as he begged Nigerians particularly youths often used as cannon fodder by politicians to shun all forms of electoral violence during this Saturday’s rescheduled 2019 Presidential Election.
Fr. Ebubemonso who said that at every contest one person must emerge victorious, advised that no life of any Nigerian is worth losing in the name of electoral failure or victory and thus urged all Nigerians especially those in positions of authority in the religious and political circles as well as markets to ensure they mobilize for peace rather than crisis as it pays no one any good.

The Uke Anambra state Adoration Ministry Spiritual Director prayed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) led by it’s chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu conducts a hitch free election that would be judged by all both nationally and internationally as free, fair and credible.
Fr Obimma who spoke while addressing a mammoth Crowd at his Adoration Ministry at Uke, Anambra state weekend insisted that there is no alternative to peace , hence everybody should pursue peace during the elections even as he lauded the peace initiative commitments entered by candidates at all levels for the 2019 general elections.
He called for a community spirit by Nigerians to enable them come out during Saturday’s rescheduled elections and urged them not to be discouraged with the postponement of presidential election to this week’s Saturday by INEC but to mobilize themselves and vote for a candidate of their choice. He said electorates should not allow anything dampen their spirits or discourage them from coming out en mass to vote a candidate of their choice.

He commended the leadership of IPOB led by Nnamdi Kanu for suspending the stay at home order for better participation and a hitch free elections in South East in particular and Nigeria at large.

Fr. Ebubemonso said: ‘’This is time for change and I beg Nigerians to uphold democracy by coming out to exercise their franchise. Don’t mortgage your conscience. Don’t mortgage your future. Don’t allow anybody to buy your conscience. If this government has not been fair to the poor masses and have not provided dividends of democracy, don’t vote them back but if not why not! There is need for change for a better Nigeria.
Fr Obimma aka Ebubemonso continued: ‘’Agitation is good but agitate with your votes because your PVC is your power, your authority and your right. I believe that a successful businessman and an expert in Economics have what it takes to be the leader of Nigeria. I appeal to Nigerians to come out and vote. We pray that INEC will conduct the election free and fair and give the world a credible result because the World is looking at us as a country and our Lord is watching.

‘’I want Nigerians to vote for somebody who has the capacity to move the country forward and may our youths and everybody at that shun all forms of electoral violence because the election is not worth of losing any Nigerian life. There is no alternative for peace, win or lose, shun violence in all ramifications.

Politics / APC Rally In Owerri Suffered Crisis As Rochas’ In-law, Uzodinma Thugs Clash by gisthippo: 10:53pm On Jan 12, 2019
A rally organized on Saturday by the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, suffered a crisis.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that supporters of the party’s governorship candidate in the state, Mr Hope Uzodinma, and those of his Action Alliance (AA) counterpart, Mr Uche Nwosu, engaged in a fight at the APC women and youths rally.
Supporters of Nwosu were chanting victory songs and raising his posters in the air when the clash began.

Security operatives, however, intervened, shooting sporadically in the air while warding off the VIP stand where Wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, who represented Wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha, was seated alongside other dignitaries.
At least three persons were injured as the crowd dispersed following the gunshots.

Reacting, Gov. Rochas Okorocha alleged that the fight was caused by thugs hired by Uzodinma.
He described the relationship between AA and APC in the state as good, but added that Uzodinma would not win the governorship election.

He said, “Hope Uzodinma can never win the governorship election in the state. The alliance between AA and APC is a perfect one.

“We are working to deliver President Buhari and Uche Nwosu in the state.”

Mrs Osinbajo, however, told the crowd to vote for Buhari and APC candidates in the forthcoming elections.
Speaking to NAN, a top politician in the state, who pleaded anonymity, asked why the AA governorship candidate should attend a rally organised by the APC.

“This is a serious anti-party activity,” he said.

Politics / Obiano Leads Buhari’s Campaign In South-east by gisthippo: 2:30pm On Dec 19, 2018
It has been confirmed that Governor Willie Obiano is the Chief campaigner for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in South-East.

This is following the inauguration of a movement,“One-on-one Nigeria,” for the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019in Awka, Anambra state capital led by Senior Special Assistant to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on Event Management, Mr Chido Obidiegwu.

Obidiegwu himself disclosed this at a briefing at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre in Awka, Anambra State.

Accompanied by a former All Progressives Grand Alliance presidential aspirant, George Okoye, Obidiegwe said the campaign for Buhari was in the interest of the Igbo.
He said, “‘One-on-one Nigeria’ is an independent network of Ndigbo determined to achieve Igbo Presidency by returning President Buhari for a second term.

“This we do through a massive awareness to convince Ndigbo that four years of President Buhari is better than eight years of any other person for us to achieve this dream via a project tagged 4 is better than8.”

Obidiegwu, who recalled the travails of the Igbo since the end of the Nigerian civil war, said the Igbo were not ready to play the opposition anymore in the country’s polity.

He commended Buhari for infrastructural development in the South-East, saying that the President had shown goodwill to the people of the area.
Asked whether his action was not antithetical to the All Progressives Grand Alliance that had fielded a presidential candidate, Gen John Gbor (retd.), Obidiegwu said his movement had nothing to do with political parties, stressing that, “Our resolve is driven by President Buhari’s past, his values, orientation and disposition.”

He said, “Buhari began serious work on the long-abandoned Second Niger Bridge, the long abandoned Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, the Zik Mausoleum, Ariaria Aba Independent Power Project.

“These, among other projects the Igbo yearned for over16 years, could only be realized under President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We in One-on-One Nigeria are resolute and unequivocal in our support for this 2nd tenure.”
He added, “Successive military and civilian administrations could not do much to elevate the Igbo spirit as desired and deserved. It only took President Buhari who the Igbo rejected at the polls to address some of their key desires abandoned by previous regimes.”

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu Not In Jerusalem, Says Israeli Govt by gisthippo: 9:02am On Oct 23, 2018
The Israeli government said the pictures and videos showing Nnamdi Kanu praying in Israel could be old. Speaking during an interaction with some African journalists in Jerusalem, the spokesman of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Mr Emmanuel Nashon said there was no evidence that the leader of IPoB was in their country of recent. “There are no details about his recent visit to this country yet,” Nashon said adding that the pictures and videos could be old ones. Speaking on their relationship with Africa, Nashon said Israel had been misconstrued, adding that they were getting back to their old friends. “Our relationship with Africa is extremely important,” he noted, insisting that the continent stands to benefit more from Israel. “Israel is a peaceful nation that believes in the process of the world at this changing times,” Emmanuel disclosed, adding that they have different religions such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam that live peacefully with one another. You risk losing Arewa’s support if you associate with Fani-Kayode, Nnamdi Kanu; youths tell Atiku “Jerusalem is one of the great cities in the world. We are considering a lot of networks with Africa and African journalists will get direct contact with Israel journalists so that you don’t need to take news from  agencies,” Nashon said. Kanu’s resurfacing prearranged — Uwazuruike In a related development, the people of South East have been advised to treat the touted disappearance and resurfacing of Kanu, as “a non-issue because it was carefully pre-arranged by the Department of State Services, DSS.” Leader of Biafra Independence Movement, BIM, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, stated this yesterday, at a press conference in Owerri, to react to Kanu’s reappearance in Isreal and broadcast. “Not many of his ardent followers truly know that Kanu is not sincerely working for the independence of Biafra. His coming to Nigeria, his arrest, detention, trial, release on bail and his alleged disappearance and resurfacing, were all prearranged by the DSS”, Uwazuruike said. It was the considered opinion of the  BIM leader that if Mazi Kanu was sincere, he should have disclosed how he was spirited away from his Afara Ukwu country home, when the soldiers struck. Nnamdi Kanu is alive, I have confirmed it too- Lawyer “How did he disappear from his country home? How did he survive the onslaught even when he claimed that about 28 people were killed during the military operation in his home? How did he leave Nigeria and what document did he use to traverse all the nations before arriving Israel? We couldn’t have forgotten so soon that the DSS seized all his travel documents”, Uwazuruike asked. After giving a graphic account of the number of times he was arrested, detained and tried in court, Uwazuruike also reasoned that “a freedom fighter donates his life for the struggle he believes in. “This is not the case with Nnamdi Kanu. Running away from the struggle means that he is a fake freedom fighter. This young man does not consult anybody and he has no adviser,” Uwazuruike said. Coalition mobilises 1m youths to receive Kanu back to Nigeria Meantime, a coalition of Igbo youth groups including Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide yesterday stated that it was mobilising one million Igbo youths across the South East geopolitical zone to herald the return of the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu back to the country. Health / ‘game Changer’ Tuberculosis Drug Cures 9 In 10 by gisthippo: 8:02am On Oct 23, 2018
A new treatment for a drug-resistant strain of tuberculosis can cure more than 90 per cent of sufferers, according to a trial hailed Monday as a “game changer” in the fight against the global killer.

Doctors in Belarus — a country with one of the highest rates of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in the world — spent months treating patients with a new drug, bedaquiline, alongside other antibiotics.

The results, seen exclusively by AFP, were startling: Of the 181 patients given the new drug, 168 were totally cured.

The World Health Organization says currently only 55 per cent of people with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis are successfully treated.

The Belarus trial success rate – 93 per cent – was largely replicated in bedaquiline trials in other countries in eastern Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia, according to abstracts seen by AFP, due to be unveiled at a major tuberculosis conference later this week.

“The results from this study confirm… that newer drugs like bedaquiline can cure and are game changers for people living with multidrug-resistant and extremely drug-resistant tuberculosis,” Paula Fujiwara, scientific director of The International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease who was not involved in the research, told AFP.

Lead researcher Alena Skrahina, from the Republican Research and Practical Centre for Pulmonology and TB in Minsk, called the bedaquiline results “promising”.

“Generally, our study confirms the effectiveness of bedaquiline in previous clinical trials, and does not confirm the concerns about safety problems,” she told AFP.

Tuberculosis killed at least 1.7 million people in 2017, according to the WHO, making the airborne infection the world’s deadliest infectious disease.

It kills more than three times as many people as malaria every year and is responsible for the majority of HIV/AIDS deaths.

Despite the huge death toll, tuberculosis receives roughly a tenth of the global research funding that goes to HIV/AIDS.

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is immune to two of the most common antibacterial drugs used to treat the disease.

Experts believe it is spreading worldwide due to poor handling of tuberculosis cases.

Unlike other global killers such as HIV, tuberculosis is curable — but currently only under a strict six-month supervised regimen involving multiple daily drug doses.

In many parts of the world, medications are incorrectly stored, or simply run out before the treatment has finished, leading to greater drug resistance, especially in crowded settings such as prison and hospitals.

The WHO says variants of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis have been reported in at least 117 countries around the world.

$13 Billion Pledge

Unlike many antibiotics, bedaquiline doesn’t attack the bacteria directly and instead targets the enzymes that the disease relies on for its energy.

All of the patients in the study experienced side effects but these were less severe than previously thought.

Last month UN member states agreed a global plan to fight tuberculosis and to facilitate cheaper access to vital drugs.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly in New York, world leaders pledged $13 billion annually to end the tuberculosis epidemic, with a further $2 billion to fund research — up from $700 million currently.

Unlike the battle against HIV, which has received high-profile celebrity backing, tuberculosis is often seen as a historic affliction affecting only remote and undeveloped parts of the world.

Scientists and policymakers gather this week in The Hague for a global conference on lung health, where they are expected to warn that tuberculosis could spread through richer nations currently struggling with non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and obesity.

India alone accounts for a quarter of all tuberculosis cases, and there are hopes that new, cheaper drugs could help strangle the spread of the disease if rolled out worldwide.

“We urgently need more affordable drugs like bedaquiline if we are to seriously make a dent in curing the estimated 600,000 people falling sick to multidrug-resistant tuberculosis each year and avoiding nearly a quarter of a million deaths,” said Fujiwara.

Politics / How I Will Fix Electricity Problem In 36 Mths – Duke by gisthippo: 11:34pm On Oct 21, 2018
Former Cross Rivers State Governor, Donald Duke, speaks during an interview on Sunday Politics on October 21, 2018.
Duke is confident that the steps he highlighted will not only put an end to the electricity problems in the country but also encourage investment if the manufacturing industries are charged with low interests.

He faulted the situation where the President is the Minister of Petroleum Resources, stressing that more attention should be given to how funds are being utilised.

“I think that is hogwash; absolutely hogwash. I would rather be Minister of Finance.

“I will take over the finances of the country and know how the money is spent,” the SDP presidential candidate said.

The former governor further explained that the challenges facing the nation originated from its productivity index which he said was ‘absolutely dismal’

According to him, there is a need to create jobs for the people, as well as an environment where citizens can do things for themselves.

He disclosed that this would be one of the major priorities of his administration if elected president, noting that job creation required an emergency approach

Health / Say No To Virginity Testing’ by gisthippo: 8:00am On Oct 18, 2018
A group of United Nations agencies has issued a joint statement calling for a ban on tests meant to assess the virginity of a girl or a woman.

The statement, issued during the World Congress of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) in Rio de Janeiro, stressed that such tests were both unscientific, and a violation of human rights.

The UN agencies are: the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), UN Women and the World Health Organisation (WHO).

“So-called ‘virginity testing’ – also often referred to as hymen, ‘two-finger’ or per vaginal examination – is a gynecological inspection of female Instruments carried out in the false belief that it can reliably determine whether a woman or girl has had vaginal intercourse,” the group said.

In a global call to eliminate violence against women and girls everywhere, the UN agencies said that “this medically unnecessary, and often times painful, humiliating and traumatic practice must end”.

The practice is a long-standing tradition documented in at least 20 countries, spanning all regions of the world.

Women and girls are often forced to undergo virginity testing for various reasons, including requests from parents or potential partners to establish marriage eligibility or even from potential employers.

It is mostly performed by doctors, police officers, or community leaders on women and girls, in order to assess their virtue, honour or social value.

In their statement, the UN agencies explained that the practice has “no scientific or clinical basis” and that “there is no examination that can prove a girl or woman has had sex”.

The agencies added that the “appearance of girl’s or woman’s hymen cannot prove whether they have had sexual intercourse or are sexually active or not”.

In addition, the UN agencies denounced virginity testing as a violation of the rights of girls and women, which can be detrimental to their physical, psychological and social well-being.

The examination can be “painful, humiliating and traumatic” and reinforces stereotyped notions of female sexuality and gender inequality.

In some regions, it is common for health professionals to perform virginity testing on victims of rape, supposedly to ascertain whether or not rape occurred, they said.

Given the lack of clinical basis, the procedure is deemed “unnecessary” and “can cause pain and mimic the original act of sexual violence, exacerbating survivors’ sense of disempowerment and cause re-victimisation,” the agencies said.

“The result of this unscientific test can impact upon judicial proceedings, often to the detriment of victims and in favour of perpetrators, sometimes resulting in perpetrators being acquitted.

“Given that these procedures are unnecessary and potentially harmful, it is unethical for doctors or other health providers to undertake them.

“Such procedures must never be carried out,” the joint statement read, calling for a collaborative response across societies, supported by the public health community and all health professionals.

Dr Princess Simelela, WHO’s Assistant Director-General for Family, Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health, said: “Health professionals can be great agents for change”.

“With support from health systems and governments, they can recognise that ‘virginity testing’ has no medical or clinical bases, refuse to carry out the harmful practice, and educate the public about this,” Simelela noted.

The WHO official added that, in doing so, they would be “upholding the Hippocratic oath of ‘do no harm’ and safeguarding the human rights of girls and women in their care

Education / Smartphones, Threat To Professional Cameras – Experts by gisthippo: 3:15pm On Oct 17, 2018
Smartphones might slowly replace the need for professional cameras, photographers say.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the debate between smart phones and cameras ensued during a panel session at the Abuja International Photo Festival on Tuesday.

In the session tagged “The future of photography: Are smart phone cameras a threat to DSLR?”, panelists Don Barber, Khalid Abdul and Amina Saleh noted that smartphone cameras are catching up and cannot be overlooked.

Abdul, who started out professional photography with a smartphone, said that phone companies are working hard to make their cameras more preferred than the professional cameras.

He however noted that although the threat of smartphones is looming over the business, they haven’t conquered the affordability problem yet.

“Not every smartphone can do the job and it cost a lot of money to get a smartphone that can take good pictures; the price of a good smartphone is almost the same as a professional camera.

“To get a good smartphone is almost the same price as a DSLR. I believe that there is still a journey for the smartphones but they will get there soon,” Abdul said.

Similarly, Saleh, who takes more pictures with smartphones, said that smartphones are a convenient alternative to professional cameras.

She said: “It is more convenient to take pictures with your phones, especially in a hostile environment where the photographer doesn’t want to it obvious that a picture is being taken.

“If DSLRs keep on being expensive, smartphones will take over. They are working hard on better picture quality and other photography features,” Saleh said.

She added that although professional camera fanatics might want to ignore the possibilities of smartphones taking over, they need to familiarise themselves with the growing technology.

Meanwhile, ace photographer, Don Barber pointed out that the term ‘photographer’ should not be used loosely because of the availability of smartphone cameras.

According to him, smartphone cameras are here to stay but they cannot take away the importance of professional cameras.

“The term ‘photographer’ is not the equipment. It is the vision and the job. So, regardless of the equipment used, a photographer will always differ from a phone user.”

NAN reports that the ongoing Abuja International Photo Festival will continue to lead conversations on the application of photography to socio-economic development

Politics / Boko Haram Not In Charge Of Nigeria – Buhari by gisthippo: 8:38am On Sep 03, 2018
www.odogwublog.com

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that Boko Haram insurgents no longer control any part of the country.
He said this on Sunday, in Beijing, China, while stating some of the successes of his administration, as he addressed some Nigerians residing in the country.
The President attributed the successes to operations of security agencies deployed to counter insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country.
He said, “You will all recall that we contested the last election basically on three issues, which includes security, especially in the North East.

“The Boko Haram used to occupy quite a number of local governments in Borno State but they are not in anyone now”.
He, however, stated that the insurgents have resorted to other strategies to carry out their terrorist activities.
“They have resorted to a very dangerous way of terrorism by indoctrinating young people, mostly girls and attacking soft targets, churches, mosques and marketplaces,’’ he said.
On the herders and farmers crisis in the country, the President blamed the clashes on the shrinking of the Lake Chad, which according to him, has forced many cattle nomads to seek greener pastures for their herds in other parts of the country.
He, however, said security agencies are doing their best to curtail the crisis.
He also called on the media to complement the efforts of the government by disseminating balanced and accurate information to the public at all times.
According to the President, not making efforts to “study the historical antecedents of issues” only causes more problems for the nation.

5:15pm, the sky darkening and the rains about to descend was the time and moment she chose to visit. I still don't know why she decided upon that particular day.

She had called abruptly "CeeJay, I'm at the gate of your residence. Should I stop there or come inside with the okadaman"?
With a little confusion- "Come inside" I replied.

I had just finished eating and was putting away the dishes. I hurriedly cleared everywhere, it usually took a minute or two from the gate to my block.

I came out and met her paying off the okadaman, she looked really stunning with a skin-hugging pair of trousers which accentuated her womanliness from behind and a revealing top that pushed up her cleavage, revealing a lot more than was necessary.

"Hey, Mary(Not real name), it's about to rain and almost late. Why did you decide to come now, I thought you said 2pm?" I found myself asking immediately she looked at me, flashing a smile that revealed a near perfect set of dentition, momentarily disarming me.

"Don't mind me jare, I was a little bit engaged. I had to finish up my sewing, but it's nothing, right?" She replied.

"It's okay.. You're welcome by the way" I said.
**********

She complimented my room, it's tidiness, organisation and neatness. We got talking, by this time it was already raining heavily and it was clear she wasn't going back home under the circumstance. The heavens were threatening to fall down, literally.

I gave her a shirt and short to change into, all the while avoiding her gaze. Her eyes seemed to be saying so many things at once, forcefully wheedling me.. things I didn't want to understand.

We talked, laughed loudly and chatted far into the night. Then came the time when emotions were rearing to take over, she was communicating a lot with her body and I was trying as much as possible not to indulge.

Did I mention that she's robustly busty? Damn!

The dangers of being in a one room apartment with the opposite sex when its heavily raining and the weather - really cozy is something that should be studied in school as a course. 5 credit load.

I urinated up to seven times that night before I slept. Tactic I employed, to keep sane.

I woke up with a start, fresh with the consciousness that someone slept beside me all night. I couldn't pray that night too. How did I even sleep?

I was still wondering before I turned around and met her sitting upright with her back to the wall, keenly looking at me. This was around 5am.

I was scared shitless, the look was portentous. My heart was racing wildly and rapidly, I couldn't explain why. I still can't, till today.

She then said, in a voice I couldn't really believe was hers. "No-one had ever said NO to me before CeeJay, no-one."

I saw her off that morning and came back home to pray.

Crime / Rape Of Martha By Her Uncle: VEAST Calls For - Death By Hanging - For All Rapist by gisthippo: 10:16pm On Sep 01, 2018
e from the East – VEAST , an Igbo Group, held an urgent meeting on the incessant and repeated rape and incest cases in Nigeria, and came up with a frank call on the Federal Government , to wit, the three arms of government: Legislature, Executive and Judiciary, to as a matter of urgency, make , interpret and execute death – by- hanging law, not at all life jail, for all inclusive cases of rape.

In a statement made available to journalists at Asaba and endorsed by its Convener, Comrade Kindness Jonah, the group noted with utter shattering of heart , the gory tale of brutalized rape of one Martha, a devout VIRGIN Christian by her uncle from hellfire as relayed on page 25 of Thursday Vanguard, 30TH August, 2018.
This enterprising beautiful virgin Christian lady who should be protected by her uncle, guided by her uncle, and given out in marriage as a matter of pride and honour to her husband by her uncle, was contrariwise, brutally disvirgened by her uncle. As Igbos would say, ‘dog has eaten the bone on its neck’.

This incestuous act , VEAST said, cannot and should not anymore be tolerated in Nigeria, and called on all required in execution of law to ensure that this satanic uncle that disvirgened Martha be soundly punished with nothing short of life jail.
‘‘‘ We make case for death by hanging for all cases of rape, from now on in Nigeria.

The rate of rape and the concomitant wriggling out of the case by the guilty via the instrumentality of the law , via the so called legal lacunas occasioned by burden of proof in limbo, makes a rape victim, a laughing stock in Nigeria, thereby emboldening the criminal and furthering the course of this shit- hole act.’’’
VEAST noted with dismay, the increasing cases of incest in our society where father rapes or sleeps with his daughter, where brother rapes or sleeps with his sister, where uncle rapes or sleeps with his aunt.

From Biblical times, laments VEAST, incest has received condemnation , and can never be tolerated in our society any more. ‘‘‘‘ VEAST , therefore, calls on the National Assembly, to as a matter of urgency , make laws to that must kill the rapist by hanging publically .’’’’

Business / Anambra Shuts Banks Over N6.9B Tax , Others In Awka by gisthippo: 9:46am On Aug 31, 2018
www.odogwublog.com reports that Anambra State Internal Revenue Service Board has sealed off branches of the United Bank for Africa, UBA, across the state following tax remittance irregularities.

The seal-off supervised by the Legal Enforcement Unit of the internal revenue board has left most banking customers stranded , as Automated Teller Machines, ATMs in the said bank's branches are also shut down.

At each of the bank's branches, stranded customers and staff members were greeted with court-backed distrain stickers pasted on the bank's entrances, while security agents, and compliance monitoring officers from the revenue office hang around the banks.

When contacted, the Chairman and Chief Executive of the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, Dr David Nzekwue, said the Board was acting in line with distrain order compelling the bank's branches to be sealed following non-remittance of six point nine billion Naira tax revenue accrued from the personal income tax deductions from its employees.

He said the money is owed between Two Thousand and Six and Two Thousand and Eleven, noting that the bank having failed to provide the necessary documents needed for an audit in Two Thousand and Seventeen, was served a preceding Best of Judgement Assessment notice, of which it's default has led to the seal-off.

Stressing that the Board exercises its powers in line with best legal standards, Dr Nzekwue regretted the inconveniences caused by the seal-off on the customers, adding that the Board is always open for negotiations.

Efforts to speak with officials of the bank proved abortive as at the time of filing the report.

In their reactions, some of the bank's customers including Chief Emmanuel Ejidike and Mr. Julius Iloegbunam, called for an immediate resolution of the face-off, as it is likely to have adverse effects on the both the customers and states revenue generation machinery .

Investment / The Magic Wand Of Dr Maduka, Benefactor Of A Multimillion Judicial Complex by gisthippo: 10:25pm On Aug 27, 2018
The magic wand of Dr Maduka, benefactor of a multimillion judicial complex

Dr Godwin Maduka, an America-based Medical Director of Las Vegas Pain Institute& Medical Centre, has tasked people on what he claimed to be five characteristics of success.

According to Maduka, who recently donated a judicial complex with judges' quarter worth over N250 million to Anambra state government for promotion of justice and fair hearing, five points or five characteristics to success applicable to individuals, institutions, states and nations are to have undying love for God, the creator.

"You have to pay him 100% homage. People must believe in God. The reasons to believe in God and love him is because He engineered everything in the world. If you look at an individual he created, you will discover that He gave him everything he needs in life for a purpose. These include the eyes to see, the ears to hear, the nose to smell, the mouth to eat, and other parts of life. If you go out there, you will see the boy, the girl.

"The number two is hardwork. Even human being loves hardwork. If you visit a construction site, you will find one individual who is hardworking and does not grudge or care to know who is watching him or not.

"The number three is relayed gratification. Every country, institution or individual knows when they reached their potential. If you have not, strive to reach it. When you reach there, you will be identified. Our country has a lot of resources with which she will reach her potential. We need to empower our people to reach their potential individually and collectively not minding their tribes, religion, sex, etc. We must not take a back seat. God did not create us to take a second seat.

"The number four is impression. A nation can impress the whole world by how it treats its citizens, how they are living, creativity, how they appear, etc. For example, we should learn from the western world and others. People look at you first before they look at what you will say.

"The number five is interpersonal skills, intercountry skills, interindustry skills, etc. Individual, a nation or institution needs to identify their skills. They need to use their skills and respect others so they will respect them back. Interpersonal skills lead to self-actualization, job, promotions, etc."

The American based medical director, it would be recalled, had built the court complex, over three years ago, however, it was not put into use due to petitions from some aggrieved members of his community, Umuchukwu, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Speaking to journalists during the commissioning of the complex in Umuchukwu, Orumba South local district of the state, Maduka decried the scarcity of judges and series of petitions which had hindered the takeoff of judicial activities in the complex.

According to him, "I did not build the court for it not to be in use but in Nigeria there are some things that make people's effort not to be fulfilled. Now that the court is open and gazetted, I believe that judges will be sent there for judicial activities, it is now a judiciary complex."

The Anambra state governor, Chief Willie Obiano, represented by the state Head of Service, Mr. Harry Udu, extolled the philanthropist for his contribution to the development of the state, a kind gesture, he claimed was in line with his think home philosophy.

Obiano, while describing the High Court as one of the best High Court edifices in the country, called on the people of the state anywhere in the world to take a cue from him and invest at home.

In a remark, the wife of late Biafran warlord, Chukwemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu, expressed happiness on how Dr Maduka has been imparting the lives of people positively for years, and asked other Igbos in Diaspora to bring part of their wealth home as Maduka had done as it would help to eradicate high rate of poverty and dearth of employment in the region.

On his part, a member of Board of Trustee of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka appealed to the state government and the judiciary to urgently put the complex to use.

"My appeal is that this effort should be encouraged, he has spent fortune to build this complex and since 2015 it has not been put to use. I call on the state government and the state judiciary to identify and support this great man so that others can have the mind to follow suit," he noted.

Dr Maduka, while speaking in an interview over Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu's senatorial ambition, urged the electorate from Anambra South to support her as she has the capacity to showcase Nigeria as a country of heroes and heroines through her academic, professional, family and political experiences.

He said, "We know her life history. Money and education alone cannot be equated to leadership. Having the education, money, compassion, empathy, sympathy, and having passed through the poverty others make her the best to run for public office. We should appreciate her for agreeing to run for a public office. I believe that Bianca Ojukwu is qualified. I am sure she had learnt a lot from her late husband, Ikemba Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the Igbo supreme leader and, from her father, former governor C. C. Onoh. I am happy she has accepted to run for public office been a lawyer, a former ambassador, well spoken; flawless speech, that is what Nigeria need. We need her to showcase that this is country for heroes and heroines."
