From “The Conjuring” to “Predator” to “Slender Man”…
Venom — October 5, 2018

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytNDe__x0Hs
When Sony announced in early 2017 that they would be moving forward with multiple Spider-Man-related projects apart from Marvel Studios, fans were understandably a bit puzzled as to the appeal of a Spider-Verse without Peter Parker, who has taken up residence in the MCU after Sony and Marvel’s historic deal allowed for the rights to the character to be shared. One of Sony’s announced projects, Silver and Black — featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat, two Spidey associates — has been put indefinitely on hold, but the other — Venom, based on the classic villain/antihero — has gone full speed ahead.

Its impressive cast includes Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock/Venom, as well as Woody Harrelson, Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea) and Riz Ahmed (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The first teaser trailer is noticeably light on alien symbiotes and heavy on Hardy in serious distress, but sets a tone appropriate for what will be the first true horror film adapted from a beloved Marvel property (Blade notwithstanding). Adding to fans’ excitement: a rumor, as yet unsubstantiated, that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will indeed make an appearance. In an episode of podcast Collider Heroes, Jon Schnepp reported that Holland was on set for two days filming scenes as Parker (and pointedly not as his web-head alter ego). All signs point to Sony getting it right with their second crack at the deadly symbiote, and we’ll see just how right when Venom hits theaters on October 5.

Health / False Facts About Marijuana You Always Thought Were True. No 1 Will Shock You by GistManor: 6:36pm On Jul 06, 2018

From Reefer Madness to legalization, the perception of marijuana has changed drastically over the decades. With the seemingly unstoppable march toward nationwide decriminalization and legalization moving along steadily, there’s a lot of false information floating around about everyone’s favorite Mary Jane, whether you pass on grass or are a seasoned smoker.

Marijuana Is Harmless
Let’s keep it real—if you’re regularly ripping gravity bongs and smoking more blunts than Snoop Dogg, you’re probably not doing your lungs any favors.

First and foremost, the act of putting any kind of smoke in one’s lungs is going to be unhealthy. The belief that heavily smoking marijuana isn’t damaging your lungs, to some degree, is just plain silly. That’s not to say, however, that all smoke is created equal, and many studies have concluded that tobacco is far more harmful to one’s organs than weed. According to Robert Melamede’s article “Cannabis and tobacco smoke are not equally carcinogenic,” published in the Harm Reduction Journal, cannabis smoke hurts lung function and may knock lung cells into a pre-cancerous state, even if it lacks the direct causal link to cancers offered by tobacco. Marijuana, while presumably not as bad as tobacco, is still bad, as “the burning of plant material in the form of cigarettes generates a large variety of compounds that possess numerous biological activities.” All of this means you should probably look into vaping, bro.

Furthermore, using marijuana in any form can potentially have harmful effects on one’s brain, particularly because of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)—the stuff that gets you high.

In the opinion of Dr. Sushrut Jangi in the Boston Globe: “Each hit of THC rewires the function of this critical cognitive system [ … ] Marijuana exploits essential pathways we’ve evolved to retrieve a memory, to delicately regulate our metabolism, and to derive happiness from everyday life.”

And here we are, thinking weed makes everyday life better! Still, the very fact that weed changes things going on in your brain—making you *cough* high *cough*—probably carries with it some risk of harming your brain’s natural wiring.

In all seriousness, it’s clear that marijuana has potentially harmful effects on one’s body and brain. But then again, so does alcohol, cigarettes, energy drinks, candy, etc.—and thinking any of these things is harmless is just plain stupid. It’s all about moderation.

The 7 Easiest Ways To Whiten Your Teeth
Our teeth can certainly take a beating. Coffee, tea, tobacco use, even red wine can leave unsightly stains on our teeth, ruining that perfect smile we all long to have. Many of us will do just about anything to whiten our smile because a bright, white smile can do wonders for our confidence.

Interestingly, there’s a historical reason why perfectly white teeth are so desired in many cultures. Pearly white teeth have been a mark of beauty and wealth for centuries. In fact, the practice of teeth-whitening can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians around 4,000 years ago. They used a mixture of ground pumice stone mixed in wine vinegar to whiten their teeth. A few centuries later, ancient Romans used … well … urine to whiten teeth. Yea, you heard me right, they used urine.

Today, there are many other techniques — both professional and natural — that you can use to whiten your teeth, and they don’t include urine, thank you very much.

The 7 Easiest Ways to Whiten Your TeethOne of the easiest methods of whitening your teeth is by having it done professionally by your dentist. In fact, it is one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures in the world. But, professional whitening does come with a hefty cost that might be too steep for some. The cost of in-office bleaching averages $650, and it should be noted that it is not a permanent solution.

Still, many find the advantages of in-office tooth-whitening procedures make it worth the cost, including a faster result and fewer sensitivities.

Health / 5 Reasons To Start Skipping Breakfast Today! by GistManor: 8:50am On Jul 03, 2018

The belief that we won’t have our get-up-and-go unless we down a plate or two, has turned the concept of eating upon rising into a die-hard dietary rule. Original research on whether breakfast made an impact on health did find that healthier people ate breakfast. But data, as we know, doesn’t always tell the whole story.

“Lots of people who skip breakfast or practice intermittent fasting are healthy too,” says Dr. John Berardi, co-founder of Precision Nutrition. “About 85% of the clients we work with eat breakfast and tend to follow a guideline of eating small frequent meals throughout the day, but that’s largely to help them learn to practice healthier eating habits. If you’re a person who regularly makes good nutritional choices, then eating breakfast is more negotiable.”

In fact, skipping that first meal may lead to some real benefits — from possibly losing a few pounds to increasing your level of anti-aging growth hormone. And don’t worry, your metabolism won’t suffer. Eating small meals throughout the day, starting with breakfast, isn’t necessary to stimulate metabolism, says Berardi, who co-authored an extensive study review on meal frequency for the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

His suggested revise to the dictate: Breakfast is optional. Hard-and-fast rules don’t allow for much mindfulness, anyway — and that’s an integral part of any nutritional approach. So if you love how breakfast gets you going, feel free to stick with that routine, but if you’re not a morning person, there’s no harm in forgoing food first thing. Here, Berardi suggests 5 reasons to skip breakfast:

1. It’s not required to boost metabolism
The idea that metabolism slows radically in response to not eating certain meals in a single day just isn’t accurate. The amount of calories you’re taking in and the composition of those calories — proteins, carbs, and fats — are really what impact metabolism.

Hello Nairalanders.

I am a bit of a regular here... but had to create an alt account for anonymity sake.

Like the title of my thread says, i've been suffering from this situation for years now and it's totally reducing my social life to shambles. ANd you may want to ask what I have done about this. I have done alot. I have been to quite a number of dentists. Some say it's a case of scaling and polishing, a procedure I allow them to carry on with, to no avail.

I have tried various mouth washes, various mixtures, various gums and I am getting fed up. I am having difficulties relating well with people outside because I want to always close my mouth. People are beginning to tag me a snub and proud person.

Please, that's why I have turned to you my e-pals. Do you know any powerful solution that has worked for someone you knew with chronic bad breath before? Are you a dentist on this forum and have an idea of how I can get rid of this social killer for good? Please your contributions will be very much appreciated.

Health / Re: 10 Early Warning Signs Of Diabetes You Should Not Ignore by GistManor: 8:45pm On Jun 28, 2018
michaelo2:
Like car needs fuel to move, human's body needs energy to function properly.
When you eat, your digestive tract breaks down nutritive elements, converts them into glucose and sends it to the bloodstream.

At the same time, the pancreas releases hormone insulin in order to transport glucose from blood into the cells, which can use it as energy.

But this system may fail, and blood sugar levels may become elevated because of insufficient production of insulin or decreased cells' sensitivity to it.

This condition, commonly known as diabetes, affects nearly 422 million people in the world, some of whom don't even know about the problem.

In 90% of cases, diabetes appears when body cells become resistant to normally produced insulin.

Specialists say that those who are overweight or obese, don't manage high blood pressure, have high cholesterol levels and are physically inactive, have dramatically high risks for developing this type 2 diabetes.

In type 1 diabetes body's immune cells think that its own pancreatic cells are foreign agents, and start to destroy them. As a result, number of insulin-producing cells drops down.

Autoimmune diabetes usually becomes apparent in children and young adults, while insulin resistance is much more common in older people.

If left untreated, diabetes may contribute to serious damage of the vessels and nerves.

The problem is that diabetes often causes mild or no symptoms, until blood sugar levels become extremely high.

Check up these early signs of diabetes and don't ignore them:
#1. Need to urinate more often - when the kidneys can't deal with excessive glucose, they allow it to go into the urine. Glucose drags water from the cells that leads to more frequent urination.

#2. Unusual thirst – feeling thirsty is OK, especially after vigorous workout or in the hot environment, but inexplicable extreme thirst may be a sign of diabetes. It occurs because the body tries to replenish fluid, lost with urine.

#3. Unexplained tiredness – as body cells don't attain energy fuel, they can't perform their function as required. This often results in long-lasting causeless fatigue.

#4. Intense hunger – lack of energy activates compensatory mechanism that makes you feel hungry all the time.

#5. Weight loss without trying – despite increased hunger, people with diabetes lose in weight rapidly. The reason is that the body starts to break down proteins from your muscles in order to get some energy.
In addition to this, kidneys work hard to remove excessive sugar and use many calories to do this.

#6. Hazy vision – if blood glucose stays elevated for a long time, it can change the shape of the lens and cause blurry vision. Once sugar levels are normalized, your vision becomes normal.

#7. Impaired healing processes – poor circulation, associated with diabetes, delays healing processes after cuts, bruises and infection.

#8. Yeast infection – diabetes can significantly suppress your immune system, boosting your risks for vaginal yeast infection and oral thrush.

#9. Dark spots – dark patches that appear in the skin folds, armpits, groin are called acanthosis nigricans and are one of the early signs of diabetes.

#10. Pins and needles – tingling, pain and numbness in the hands and feet occur because of nerve damage related to diabetes progression.

5 Fruits You Shouldn’t Be Eating – The Reasons Will Shock You (With Pictures)

Who doesn’t love fresh fruit? It’s delicious, sweet, and good for you. That’s what I call a win/win. If you get really hungry, what better choice can you make than a piece of fresh fruit? But unfortunately, not all fruits are created equally.

While they all have health benefits, some are healthier than others. And with some fruits, the drawbacks are actually worse than the benefits. You should be looking for fruit high in fiber and vitamins, and low in calories and sugar. If you don’t, you may not be enjoying the healthy snack that you think you are.

If you’re thinking about which fruits to use as staples in your diet and which to indulge in only occasionally (and yes, fruits can actually be considered indulgences), it’s important to know the facts so you can make the best and healthiest choices for your body.

So, here are the 5 fruits you shouldn’t be eating

Grapes

Have you ever found yourself eating an entire bag of grapes in one sitting? I certainly have. They’re so easy to pop into your mouth without giving them a second thought. And they’re fruit, so they can’t hurt anything, right? Unfortunately, grapes do have some negative side effects.

The negative effects of eating grapes include weight gain, carb overload (one cup of grapes contains 27 grams of carbs), gut issues, and allergy attacks. Turns out, this easy snack is not as harmless as you thought.

The Federal Government says it will commence disbursement of the recovered 322 million dollars Abacha loot through Conditional Cash Transfers (CCT) to 302,000 poor households in 19 states in July.

Tukur Rumar, of the National Cash Transfer Office (NTCO), disclosed this at a roundtable on assets recovery organised by the Swiss Embassy on Thursday, in Abuja.

According to Rumar, the benefiting households will receive N5,000 monthly.

Mr Iorwa Apera, the National Coordinator, National Social Safety Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO), said 503,055 households were already on the NSR register from the 19 states, adding that by July, there would be a social register for all the states of the federation.

“The Federal Government would begin with those states, because they had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NASSCO to put in place certain infrastructure to empower the national register.

“Some of the states delayed, but the other ones were quick enough to set up infrastructure that allowed us to start work there, but all the states are now on board as they have set up their state operating offices and donated office equipment to us.

“As states come on board, we enroll and so they extend to the beneficiary register, and presently we are generating data in all the states now,’’ he said.

Health / Re: 7 Things That Happen To Your Body When You Stop Making Love by GistManor: 6:40pm On Jun 28, 2018
GistManor:

Intimacy and physical contact are things humans need to survive, and yes that includes a little action between the sheets. Has it been a while since you’ve done the deed? Maybe you and your partner have lost a bit of the spark in your love life. Or maybe you’re newly single or simply don’t have the time to date. It’s also possible you’re just focused on other things in your life and don’t feel like you’re missing anything by not having sex.

Regardless of the reason behind the lack of lovemaking in your life, if you’ve noticed any sudden changes in your mood or your body, it might be about time to get back in the game. It turns out not having sex can actually cause some changes in your body and, sure, some of the changes you experience might be pretty pleasant, but we can tell you for certain that the vast majority of them aren’t. Here’s what you can probably expect to happen if making love has taken a backseat in your life.

You Might Have a Wet Dream or Two
Like an over-hormonal teenage boy, women who aren’t making love regularly may find that their body will remind them what they’re missing in their sleep. That’s right, we’re talking about what teenage boys might call a wet dream. This is especially likely to happen if your sex life is not only at a standstill.

Researchers had it easy when they were studying nocturnal emissions in men, the most obvious reason being because men have erections that are visible and ejaculate as proof that they’ve climaxed. With women, studying these night time bouts of arousal was more complex.

For researchers to collect data on female arousal during their sleep, they had to measure heart rate, do brain scans, and watch for temperature jumps near the clitoris. While it wasn’t easy, they managed to get it done and later revealed in a study reported by Broadly that 37 percent of women will have a wet dream before the age of 45 and that they’re most common in women between the ages of 40 and 50. So, if it’s been a while since you’ve gotten lucky, you can expect these little presents to find their way into your subconscious.

Your Stress Levels Go Through the Roof

According to Psychology Today, the endorphins released when you’re making love are ideal for leaving your worries behind and putting an instant smile on your face. So when you’ve gone a while without any nookie, you might notice that your stress level builds up.

If you’re not one to get off as often as you’d like, have no fear! It’s not only those endorphins that help reduce stress levels, it’s those acrobatic moves we try in the bedroom as well. Sex can be a form of exercise, which we all know fights off stress and anxiety, so if you aren’t getting any these days, try not to skip your cardio workouts.

If it wasn’t bad enough that without sex you’re feeling overstressed, you might also have high blood pressure. One study determined that those who had sex over a two week period had significantly lower blood pressure levels than those who were without sex or even compared those who masturbated or participated in sexual activities that excluded intercourse. So even taking care of things yourself or making out a bit won’t help your stress levels very much. In this case, women actually do need a partner.
Education / Re: JAMB: FG Tells Tertiary Institutions How Much To Charge For Post-utme by GistManor: 9:46am On Jun 27, 2018
GistManor:

The Federal Government on Tuesday warned that it would sanction any tertiary institution which charges more than N2,000 for Post-UTME.

Minister of Education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, gave the warning at the ongoing Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Gbongan, Osun.

Adamu said:

“At the 2017 policy meeting, I endorsed that any institution which was interested in conducting any form of Post-UTME screening could do so, but that the gross charge for the screening should not be more than N2,000.

“Once again, let me caution heads of tertiary institutions that it would not be tolerated for any institution to charge any fee beyond the approved two thousand naira (N2,000).

“Firmer sanctions than those of last session shall be applied to cases of violation,” the minister said.

Adamu, however, said that the policy meeting would continue to be the forum where the agenda, guidelines, modalities, and timelines would be set for the purpose of admissions to universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education in Nigeria.

“Therefore, no admission to any tertiary institutions should be announced before the policy meeting.

“It is appreciated that the meeting is being held early enough for the commencement of the new session.

“The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board should ensure that the policy meeting is now held not later than June every year”, Adamu said.

In his remarks, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, said UTME scores were not the cut off marks to gain admission into universities.

Oloyede said the marks were just minimum scores, adding that there were other assessments for consideration before a candidate could gain admission into tertiary institutions.

He also said that the number of candidates that were involved in examination malpractices in UTME had reduced drastically.

Crime / Suicide: LASU Undergraduate Student Jumps Into Lagos Lagoon by GistManor: 7:42am On Jun 26, 2018

An undergraduate student of Lagos State University, LASU, Kingsley Gabriel, Monday, jumped into Lagos lagoon.

Gabriel was, however, rescued alive by officials of the Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA.

It was gathered that the student jumped from Falomo Bridge into the lagoon at about 11 am, leaving no reason for his action.

Confirming the incident to newsmen in Lagos on Monday, the General Manager, LASWA, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, lamented that the act was becoming rampant and worrisome on Lagos waterways.

According to him, “the student was quickly rescued from drowning in the water by LASWA rescue officials who responded swiftly by jumping into the lagoon to prevent him from drowning.”

He hinted that after his rescue, Gabriel was taken to the Falomo Police Station, for onward interrogation.

It was not clear why Gabriel decided to end his life as efforts to interview him proved abortive.

It could be recalled that a woman was said to have jumped into the Lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge and was never seen since then.

Abdulmumin, one of the sons of the late Moshood Kashimao Olawale, MKO Abiola, has been defeated in his quest to become the National Youth Leader of the All Progressives Congress.

Abubakar L. Shayyu floored the late business mogul’s son and other contestants at the just concluded party’s congress in Abuja.

Abdulmumin had explained that he joined the race because of his belief in the ruling party and that he had what it takes to give the youths the much-needed direction to move the nation forward.

According to him, since he returned to the country in 2007, he had always been thinking about how to contribute to the system and make a difference.

“I want to make my own mark, I have consulted widely before declaring my interest”, the aspirant said.

Results of the elections conducted at the two-day national convention of ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, were released on Sunday.

Liverpool is set to go for Chelsea’s first choice goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, if they failed to land Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak and Alison Becker.

Courtois has been linked to Liverpool, with his Stamford Bridge future shrouded in uncertainty.

The Belgium international has been ever-present for Chelsea ever since 2014 when Jose Mourinho brought him back from loan at Atletico Madrid.

But the Belgium No 1 is yet to sign a new Chelsea contract with just one year remaining in his current deal.

Liverpool could make a move with question marks lingering over the heads of both Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool Echo reports that a transfer is not to be ruled out.

It is said that manager Jurgen Klopp will only go for the player if he misses out on two other targets: Becker and Oblak who are thought to be high on the list of his reinforcements.

But Liverpool may miss out on both players.

Real Madrid, while also holding an interest in Courtois, would love to lure Alisson away from Roma.

And Atletico Madrid may price suitors out of a deal for Oblak, who has a huge £89million release clause.

The Liverpool Echo reports that if that happens, Liverpool have a chance of signing Courtois.

Chelsea may even have their hand forced due to the player leaving for nothing in a year’s time.

The other is Dominic Solanke, who has emerged as a transfer target for Steven Gerrard at Rangers.

Politics / Re: Presidency Releases Document Detailing Buhari’s Achievements In 3 Years READ!!! by GistManor: 2:07pm On May 26, 2018
GistManor:

Ahead of Democracy Day on May 29 this year, the presidency has published a document reeling out President Muhammadu Buhari’s achievements during his three years in power.

Buhari was elected under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC), defeating then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He was sworn into office on May 29, 2015.

In his inaugural speech, the president stated that his administration will focus on the economy, fight against corruption, and provision of security.

The document reads:

Economy
The presidency says the Nigerian economy is back and is on the path of growth after the recession of 2016-17.

It said the Buhari administration’s priority sectors of agriculture and solid minerals maintained consistent growth throughout the recession.

It said inflation has fallen for the fifteenth consecutive month while the nation’s external reserves are at their highest levels in five years, currently double the size of October 2016.

“The new FX Window introduced by the CBN in April 2017 now sees an average of $1 billion in weekly turnover, and has attracted about 45 billion dollars in inflows in its first year, signalling rising investor confidence in Nigeria

“Nigeria’s Stock Market ended 2017 as one of the best-performing in the world, with returns of about 40 percent,” it said.

It also said five million new taxpayers were added to the tax base since 2016, as part of efforts to diversify government revenue.

Also, tax revenue increased to N1.17 trillion in the first quarter 2018, a 51 per cent increase on the first quarter 2017 figure.

The government said N 12.7 trillion was spent on infrastructure in the 2016 and 2017 budgets, “an unprecedented allocation in Nigeria’s recent history.”

Other economic achievements, stated by the presidency, include the revitalisation of 14 moribund blending plants under the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative, and the tripling of revenue to the Federation Account from solid minerals.

It said the revenue tripled from N700 million in 2015 to N2 billion in 2016, and again rose to N3.5 billion in 2017.

The presidency also said its Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP), which was launched by Mr Buhari in April 2017, has stabilised the macroeconomic environment; achieved agricultural and food security and has also ensured energy efficiency especially in power and petroleum products.

It also said the ERGP has improved transportation infrastructure and industrialisation primarily through the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

“To fast-track the implementation of the ERGP, the federal government launched the ERGP Focus Labs, as a targeted 6-week intervention (March to April 2018) to unlock medium-scale and large-scale investment projects held back by bureaucratic bottlenecks.

“The just-concluded Phase 1 of the ERGP Focus Labs identified projects worth about $10 billion for fast-tracking, and the bottlenecks holding them back are now being resolved,” the government said.

In the area of monetary, fiscal and trade policies, the document stated that the APC administration created a new Foreign Exchange window for investors and exporters in April 2017 which has helped stabilise the market and increase appetite for Nigerian stocks by foreign portfolio investors.

“The new Window has attracted inflows of more than $45 billion in its first year of operation,” it said.

In the area of debt management, the document reveals that government adopted a strategy that seeks to achieve its goal by replacing Treasury Bills borrowing with lower-cost, longer-term external financing (via Eurobonds and Concessional Loans from China)

“The Buhari Administration inherited N12.1 trillion in debt, with N5.4 trillion annual servicing cost, and had reduced the debt service on this inherited debt to N3.9 trillion by 2016,” it said.

Under the Bond Issuance programme, the government said $7.3 billion was issued in Eurobond in 2017/18, to fund the 2017 Budget as well as to refinance maturing treasury bills and lower the cost of borrowing for the government.

“This debt refinancing strategy is paying off as treasury bill rates have dropped from 16-18% to 10-12% over the last year.

“The oversubscription of our recent Eurobond (the first issuance in 2017 saw orders in excess of US$7.8 billion compared to a pre-issuance target of US$1bn) demonstrates strong market appetite for Nigeria, and shows confidence by the international investment community in Nigeria’s economic reform agenda,” the government said.

Other debt related issues raised in the document include Nigeria’s first Sovereign Sukuk Bond which raised N100 billion used to fund 25 major road projects across the country.

There was also Nigeria’s first ever Diaspora-targeted Eurobond that raised $300 million used to fund part of the 2017 Budget and Africa’s first Sovereign Green Bond Programme that raised N10.69 billion used to fund infrastructure projects that tackle climate change.

Support To State Governments
The Buhari administration also said it has extended more than N1.9 trillion to state governments, to enable them meet their salary and pension obligations, especially in the face of dwindling oil revenues over the last two years.

The support, it said, has come in the form of Budget Support Facility (Total of N606.55 billion extended to the states as of May 2018; in exchange for reforms in budgeting, IGR, debt management, overheads, etc.)

Others are Paris Club refunds, infrastructure loans as well as loan restructuring for facilities with commercial banks.

Other economic related achievements include the Anchor Borrowers Scheme of the Central Bank of Nigeria which, it said, has substantially raised local production of rice in 2016.

It said yields from rice farming improved from 2-3 tonnes per hectare to as high as 5 – 6 tonnes per hectare.

The programme, it said, has also produced a model agricultural collaboration between Lagos and Kebbi States.

“Over N300 billion investments in the rice value chain. Between 2016 and 2018, eight new rice mills have come on-stream; and Nigeria’s paddy production and productivity has doubled compared to 2014 levels

“Nigeria’s milled rice production has increased from 2.5MT to about 4MT, and rice exports from Thailand to Nigeria dropped from 1.23 million MT in 2014 to 23,192 MT as of November 2017,” the document said.

The administration said it has launched a series of funding and capacity development initiatives designed to support small and medium businesses (MSMEs) across the country.

It said the new Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) has finally taken off, with initial funding of $1.3bn (provided by the World Bank, German Development Bank, the African Development Bank and Agence Française de Development) to provide medium and long-term loans to MSMEs.

The DBN, it said, has already disbursed N5 billion to 20,000 MSMEs, through three microfinance banks.

The government said its Ease of Doing Business reform programme through the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (inaugurated by Mr Buhari in August 2016) and the Enabling Business Environment Secretariat (EBES) resulted in Nigeria moving up 24 places on the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business rankings in 2017, and earning a place on the List of 10 Most Improved Economies.

“The Buhari administration has, since 2017, issued three Executive Orders that positively impact Nigeria’s small business environment,

“They include the Executive Order on Improving Efficiency in the Business Environment, Executive Order on Promoting Local Procurement by Government Agencies and Executive Order on planning and execution of projects, promotion of Nigerian content in contracts and science, engineering and technology.”

The government also said it is “doing more with less” resources.

It said N1.219 trillion was released for capital expenditure in the 2016 budget, and N1.476 trillion so far in the 2017 budget, making a total of N2.7 trillion (about $9 billion) in two years.

“This investment has enabled the resumption of work on several stalled projects — road, rail and power projects — across the country,” it said.

The government said even at a time of low oil prices, Nigeria’s external reserves have doubled since October 2016, from $24 billion to $48 billion.

It said the Sovereign Wealth Fund has seen inflows of $500 million in 2016 and 2017 (the first inflows since the original US$1 billion which the fund kicked off with in 2012).

GistManor:

Recently, Davido signed a new rapper named Idowest. He was announced as the latest member to Davido‘s DMW record label.

Idowest was officially unveiled as the newest addition to Davido Music Worldwide (DMW), by the label boss, Davido.

The rapper has been sighted in the company of Davido and other members of his label in recent times. Last night, the O.B.O announced the deal via his Twitter handle.

This makes him the sixth addition to the ever growing family that houses Davido, Mayorkun, Dremo, Peruzzi and Yonda, with Ichaba remaining an affiliate.

With the group compilation album scheduled to be released next month, Idowest is expected to bring his street flavour to some of the joints.

Here are five things you need to know about DMW’s latest signing, Idowest:

1. His real name is Adekunle Idowu

The name Idowest was carved out of his original name Idowu, which is a Yoruba name for someone born after a set of twins. He represents the Lagos Island area of Lagos State.

2. Idowest refers to himself as the King of Shaku Shaku

The shaku shaku vibe is one hit that gained mainstream acceptance last year with acts like Idowest, Slimcase, Mr Real and even Skales laying claim to being originators of the wave.

But the rapper who has been on his grind for quite a while now, claims that he was introduced to shaku shaku from his secondary school days and has been making the type of sound since then.

In his words

”I have been doing Shaku shaku before the vibe even came up, that’s why people call me Idowest, Aro Mafia aka the King of Shaku Shaku”.

3. Idowest has been signed to three labels in two years

Now it gets interesting when you discover that the artist has put pen to paper on three different record deals in less than two years.

On June 15, 2017, the young rapper signed with P4 Music, owned by Mr Sodiq.

Dammy Krane revived his label, Worldstar Inc (after his return from being cleared of all charges leveled against him in the US) and announced his first signing in the person of Idowest on December 15 2017.

Following the official announcement by Davido, Idowest has now gotten signed to three labels, perhaps as a pointer to the talent that he possess.

Fashion / See The Real Reason Why Brides Wear White Wedding Dresses In Church by GistManor: 4:33pm On May 19, 2018

The reason why brides now wear white wedding dresses in church has been revealed in this eye-opening report.

The white wedding dress is worn as a symbol of romantic love and purity – but who started the trend?

While there are plenty of different wedding dress styles out there, there is one tradition that most women tend to stick to.

The colour white has been associated with marriage and bridal attire for decades.

So when did this ritual begin and why do we follow it?

Daily Star Online caught up with historian Geraldine Roberts to find out more

Many believe that Queen Victoria was the first to walk down the aisle in white. The royal dazzled in a silk dress when she wed Prince Albert on February 10, 1840.

But contrary to popular belief, members of the aristocracy were wearing similar dresses decades before.See the Real Reason Why Brides Wear White Wedding Dresses in Church

In her bestselling book, The Angel and the Cad, Geraldine explores how a high profile marriage shaped how brides choose their frocks.

Catherine Tylney-Long was a British aritsocrat who was born in 1789. At the age of 16, she inherited the fortune of her baronet father, making her Regency England’s wealthiest heiress.

So when she tied the knot with William Wellesley Pole, who wasn’t of a royal background, it caused a big stir.

The wedding hit newspapers’ gossip columns and the public were intrigued by every detail of the wedding ceremony.

At the high profile wedding, Catherine made the decision to wear white.

This was a bold decision – as the heiress was the first to make it fashionable.

Geraldine explained: “White weddings were a relatively new trend reserved for the rich and fashionable. Most women simply got married in their best gown, regardless of the colour.”

The nuptials were widely reported and brides were desperate to replicate the craze themselves.

Geraldine added: “Details of Catherine’s outfit caused a sensation and made the white wedding dress desirable at all levels of society.

“From this moment onwards, brides increasingly wore white as a symbol of romantic love and purity. Perhaps this formula has been used before, but never with such pomp and publicity. It was a defining moment in the history of the British wedding, establishing a blueprint that remains popular today.”

Wedding excitement will reach fever pitch in Britain this week.

The highly anticipated nuptials between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will take place on Saturday.

While it goes without saying that Meghan will wear white or an off-white shade, there has been plenty of speculation about what frock she will choose.
