CrimeOne Feared Dead As Traders Clash With Ebonyi ‘Revenue Officials’ (Photos) by GistMore8(op): 4:21pm On Aug 28, 2019
There was pandemonium in Abakaliki on Wednesday as traders at the Abakpa main market clashed with revenue officials over Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) which allegedly led to the death of one person.

Incensed by the death, the traders rioted and were on the verge of vandalising shops of some the market leaders allegedly working with the government when Police intervened to disperse them.

A source at the market narrated that trouble started when the Special Adviser to Governor David Umahi on IGR, Martin’s Okwuegbu and the Commissioner for Internal Security and Border Peace, Stanley Emegha led some youths to collect the IGR from some traders in the market.

The youths it was gathered, were members of Ekubaraoha Youth Assembly (EYA).

The source alleged that the ‘revenue collectors’ were using the IGR collection as cover to close down the shops of some traders who took the state government to court over the leadership dispute in the market.

According to him, the traders had gone to court to challenge the removal of the market leadership before the expiration of their tenure and imposition of a new interim leadership on them by the state government.

“They came to the market and were taken to the shops of the traders that took them to court and they started closing their shops accusing them of not paying IGR”.

“One of the sons of one of the traders entered into altercation with them and in the process a fight broke out”.

“As they were beating him he fell on the ground forcefully and hit his head on the ground and lost consciousness”.

It was gathered that the traders immediately mobilized and attacked the IGR team and beat some of them up while others escaped.

Not done, the traders began rioting. They went to the shop of one of the leaders believed to be working with the government and attempted to vandalise it when Police arrived and chased them away.

The Police tear gassed many of them to disperse them and arrested many others.

Our Reporter on a visit to the market saw Police men brutally assaulting passersby and whisking them into their car in a brutal manner.

Police spokesman, Loveth Odah denied that anyone was killed in the incident.

She confirmed that one person sustained injury on the head and was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki for treatment.

Mr. Mark Onu, Leader of Ekubaraoha Youth Assembly and Umahi’s Special Assistant on Youth Mobilisation denied involvement in the incident.

“I am not aware of that, I wasn’t there. You can go and ask the SA on Markets what happened,” he said

He also said that no government official has the right to deploy his members for any purpose without informing him.

The Commissioner for Internal Security, Stanley Emegha denied that anyone was killed.

He noted that he, in company of the Special Assistant on IGR, Martin’s Okwuegbu, went to the market to seal some shops.

According to him, five shops were sealed for various reasons ranging from refusal to pay IGR to the shops being used for criminal activities in the market.
Yt
Okwuegbu on his part said about seven shops were sealed for not paying their taxes.

He denied knowledge of any fracas or death adding that the exercise was peaceful.

“We sealed the shops and left peacefully. I am just hearing from you that someone died. Nothing like that happened while we were there”, he said.

Mr. Okwuegbu denied that the exercise was used to victimise some traders opposed to the government action on the market leadership.

“We served them notice to pay three times before going to seal their shops. If anyone says he or she has paid let them come and present their records and we will immediately open the shops”, he said.

Special Adviser to Ebonyi Governor on Market Development, Karian Emeka Ofoke also denied the incident.

He said that the former Chairman of the Market was removed for embezzlement of government revenue he collected from the traders.

“We as government went there to enforce the evaders of tax and levies. We locked up their shops and left, later we heard there were trouble whereby we sent security agents to ensure there is no breakdown of law and order in the market and that’s all I know. I don’t even envisage that somebody died. I was there in the morning and I left without resistance”

“There is no leadership crisis in the market because the said Chairman was suspended for financial misappropriation; where somebody embezzled money you don’t have to protect him especially this period we are fighting corruption. So, there is nothing like leadership crisis in the Market,” he said.

Harvard Student Sues Ugandan President Museveni For Blocking Him On Twitter

A Harvard University student has sued Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni for blocking him on Twitter.

Mr Hillary Innocent Seguya Taylor, a Ugandan, also sued government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo and the police Chief Political Commissar Asan Kasingye, saying they too have blocked him from accessing their official Twitter accounts.

In his lawsuit filed before the High Court in the capital Kampala, Mr Seguya states that he is a Ugandan citizen pursuing a Master’s degree in International Relations.

He says that the President and the two officials use their Twitter accounts as public forums to disseminate information about activities of their state-mandated functions and to get feedback from citizens, and therefore blocking him is "illegal, improper and irrational".

Mr Seguya says that as a citizen living abroad, he is only able to access information relating to his country’s governance and to communicate to the respective officers through social media.

“Before being blocked, I used the same Twitter social media platform handles to communicate my views, dismays and suggestions to the respective officers,” Mr Seguya states.

He said after being blocked, he was now unable to follow and see tweets on the respective accounts and therefore “not capable of contacting, replying, liking, tagging, retweeting and knowing the public information thereon or commenting on the same.”

He asserts that the blocking of his Twitter handle, @HillaryTaylorVI, from accessing the respective three handles on July 20, July 30 and August 8, was done without giving him notice.

Mr Seguya is now seeking an order to be unblocked, and is also seeking general damages for the inconvenience caused.

The student appointed his lawyer Male Mabirizi to represent him as he is not in the country.

EducationUnilorin Professor Discovers Anti-cancer, Anti-tb Drugs, Seeks Commercialisation by GistMore8(op): 6:53pm On Aug 23, 2019
PROF. Joshua Obaleye of the Department of Chemistry, University of Ilorin, says his team has discovered anti-malaria, anti-cancer and anti-tuberculosis drugs that can be mass-produced to save lives.

Obaleye told newsmen in Ilorin that the team which he heads had tested numerous world-class metal compounds from his laboratory for the treatment of various diseases.

According to him, studies show that when a metal is attached to a pharmaceutical, it increases the efficacy of the drug.

The don, who is also the President, America Chemical Society, Nigeria Chapter, and Chairman, Nigeria Chemical Society, Kwara State Chapter, said that he lacked funding t0 commercialise the drugs.

According to the professor, he has also produced anti-inflammatory drugs and vitamins.

“We need to commercialise all these drugs and invite the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control and other regulatory bodies to come over to examine what we have produced to confirm if what we say we have is what we have.

“When they investigate us and find out what we say is authentic, maybe they will be happy to help us.

“We have produced metal anti-tuberculosis, metal anti-malaria, metal antibiotics and many more. We have produced a lot of them in this lab,” Obaleye said.

“Most of these drugs we have produced in our lab have other applications; even structural studies of them is enough. We can even use them as raw materials for other drugs,” he added.

Obaleye called for effective collaboration among researchers in the same discipline as well as interdisciplinary collaboration in order to come out with world-class discoveries.

He said that collaboration had given him great opportunities to come up with groundbreaking researches.

“We are making a lot of achievements, we have many collaborators from India, we have collaborators in Malaysia, Japan and so many other countries.

“We work with people we know are experts in those areas; if you don’t collaborate, you just be a local champion without any progress,” he said.

He called for government funding to facilitate the commercialisation of the drugs.

CrimeNYSC Hands Over 3 Suspects With Alleged Fake Certificates To Police by GistMore8(op): 6:40pm On Aug 23, 2019
The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) has handed over three young men, posing as graduates of tertiary institutions, caught in possession of fake certificates to the police.

Mrs Florence Yaakugh, the Taraba Coordinator of NYSC, on Friday, said the suspects were apprehended with the fake certificates during the screening of prospective Batch B Stream 2 corps members at the orientation camp in Jalingo.

The suspects are; Nasiru Yau, who claimed to have studied Mass Communication, Shehu Murktar -Computer Science and Illiyasu Usman- Sociology, all from the Isfop University of Cotonou in the Republic of Benin.

“They came for registration and the verification officer discovered them with fake certificates and verification papers.

“If you will recall, the Director General of NYSC Brig.-Gen. Shauibu Ibrahim recently expressed deep concern over the activities of fake corps members who cannot make a correct sentence in the English language.

“He directed us to check and fish out such persons and hand them over to the security operatives for further investigation and this is what we are just doing,” the NYSC coordinator said.

Yaakugh said that their preliminary investigation revealed that the persons involved could not write or say anything logical about their courses of study.

She urged the security agents to do a thorough job so that the truth would come out and justice is done to the affected persons.

The NYSC state coordinator said that another similar case involving a female, who also presented a foreign certificate, was being investigated by the verification officer.

CelebritiesActress Adediwura Gold Speaks On Finding Love, 12 Years After Her Divorce by GistMore8(op):
Few days after we reported that Adediwura Gold got engaged 12 years after her divorce, the actress has revealed that she dated her partner for 3 years before they decided to take their relationship a step further.

Adediwura disclosed that she has learnt a lot from being single for a long time and also expressed belief of it helping her in her new marriage.

“Definitely, I am excited. I am happy finding love again. At some point, I thought I wouldn’t be able to cope with any man again because of the past experiences I had. I always brought my past to my present and it usually affected my relationships. The men would get tired in between, and sometimes, I just switched off. But I thank God that I am now able to scale through" she told Sunday Scoop.

“I have seen and learnt a lot; I can’t even mention all. I won’t allow what happened to me during my past marriage to occur again. While single, I had many experiences with lots of guys, and I believe that with the little knowledge I have now, nobody can tutor me on relationships again" she added.

Revealing that they have been dating for three years before they decided to take things to the next level, the actress said her partner helped her fight her personal battles even though she never believed he will propose.

“It has been on for about three years now but I never believed he would propose. I just felt he was somebody I liked. He helped me fight my personal battles. Being a typical Yoruba babe, I just wanted to have someone around that I could call my boyfriend. But everything later happened for good" she said.
