NEW YORK, - Chris Walton has been working on her fingernails for 18 years. And it's finally paying off.



Guinness World Records named Walton the woman with the longest fingernails on Wednesday, introducing "The Dutchess" and her nails at a New York City event. The Las Vegas woman helped kick off the 2012 edition of the Guinness World Records book, which goes on sale later this month.

Dalton's nails measure a total of 10 feet, 2 inches on her left hand and 9 feet, 7 inches on her right hand. She said she does her own nails and makeup and does household chores even though her nails twist and turn.

WASHINGTON, - Coffee has been shown to reduce the risk of skin cancer by helping kill off damaged cells that could otherwise turn into tumors, according to a US study published on Monday.

The findings indicate that moderate caffeine drinking, or perhaps even applying coffee to the skin, could be useful in warding off non-melanoma cancer, the most commonly diagnosed of all skin cancers.

Using mice that had been genetically altered to suppress a protein enzyme called ATR, researchers showed that the mice were able to fend off cancer even when exposed to ultraviolet light.

WASHINGTON, (AFP) - Two slices of bacon, a hot dog or a serving of deli meat daily has been found to significantly boost the risk of getting type 2 diabetes, said a major US study published on Wednesday.

The research by experts at the Harvard School of Public Health represents the largest study of its kind to date and appears in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

NEW YORK, - A High School teacher has been charged with rape after allegedly filming herself having sex with an underage student.
Tara Driscoll, 33, of Bayshore, Long Island, was arrested after police obtained a copy of the video film showing her performing sex acts on the 16-year-old boy.
Police said the boy, a student at Campus Magnet High School in Cambria Heights, Queens, confessed to having sex with Driscoll after being confronted by his mother.

ABIDJAN, - (AFP) - A British man and an Italian kidnapped in May in Kebbi appear for the first time since their capture in a video sent to AFP Wednesday in which they say their abductors are from Al-Qaeda.



The roughly one-minute-long video sent to AFP in Abidjan is the first proof of life of the engineers since they were kidnapped from their apartment in Nigeria's northwestern Kebbi state on the border with Niger.

Abiola, I was responsible for collecting the sum of N800,000 (eight hundred thousand naira) quarterly from Major Hamza Al-Mustapha to the commissioner of police FCT command Abuja for his feeding.


That is three times a day subject to what he wanted to eat. I also took care of his health by seeing the doctor any time he complained of any illness. In view of this, he never ate any food or drink anything without me tasting it first before giving it to him to eat or drink.

LAGOS, - Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer, to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, who has been on trial for more than 12 years over alleged murder, yesterday, broke down in tears at a Lagos High Court, lamenting that he was kept behind bars because the authorities did not want him to reveal how late Gen. Sani Abacha and late Chief M.K.O. Abiola were murdered.

MONTREAL - The odor of dirty socks can be used to lure mosquitoes into a deadly trap before they can spread malaria, a US and Canadian-funded researcher based in Africa said Wednesday.

Dr. Fredros Okumu, of the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania, discovered through an experiment that mosquitoes were more attracted to the odor of filthy feet than to live humans sleeping in the same area.

ABUJA, The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has condemned the activities of the Islamic Fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram (Western education is evil).


The ACF, which is seen as the voice of the North, also blamed political leaders for the emergence of the group, which it described as a product of political thuggery.

The ACF backed military action to curb the security threat posed by the sect and admonished security operatives to do more on intelligent gathering to nip in the bud the group’s activities.
