Buhari’s Cross River Campaign Co-ordinator Decamps To PDP Channels Television. With barely 48 hours to the presidential election, the Buhari presidential campaign co-ordinator in Cross River State, Engineer U.Oko has decamped from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) . Uko, who decamped with all his supporters, pledged to mobilise support for the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan. He told a crowd of PDP supporters in Bekwarra Local Government Area of the State that his decision to quit the APC for the PDP was informed by President Jonathan’s sterling achievements in office. On hand to receive him back into the party was the PDP candidate for the House of Representatives elections for Bekwarra, Obudu, Obanliku Federal Constituency, Barrister Legor Idagbo. Idagbo commended him for the bold step and stated that unlike the broom, the PDPs umbrella was big enough to accommodate everyone. He noted that Engr Oko was a grass root mobilizer and an astute politician who would contribute a great deal to the continued growth of PDP in the State. http://www.channelstv.com/2015/03/27/buharis-cross-river-campaign-co-ordinator-decamps-to-pdp/ |

Boko Haram Headquarters Gwoza 'Retaken' - BBC' The Nigerian army has retaken the north-eastern town of Gwoza, believed to be the headquarters of militant Islamist group Boko Haram. The insurgents had now been driven from virtually all the territory they had held. Some militants were now fleeing towards border areas, the military said. News of Gwoza's recapture comes a day before presidential elections, which were postponed by six weeks because of the offensive against Boko Haram. Thousands of people have been killed since 2009, when the group began its insurgency to create an Islamic state. An estimated three million people have fled their homes because of the unrest, and many may be unable to vote. Analysis: BBC's Will Ross, Lagos Gwoza's location made an ideal base: The nearby Mandara Mountains offered protection and the jihadists could flee into Cameroon until the military there stepped up patrols. There is a complex system of caves and tunnels, some of which burrow hundreds of metres into the mountainside. Recent rumours suggest the Boko Haram leader may have been hiding there. When Gwoza was captured by the jihadists last August thousands of residents were trapped and terrified on the mountain slopes with no food. They were badly let down - the military fled, leaving the jihadists to help themselves to the armoury. Now on the eve of a pivotal election there is at last some good news for those who survived. The cost was high though. One resident told me the jihadists recently assembled all the elderly residents and informed them that, as they were unable to defend themselves from a military attack, they would be helped on their way to paradise. They were slaughtered in Gwoza's abattoir. Eyewitnesses say that after the military assault, people could be seen heading over the mountain by torchlight - Boko Haram fighters on the run. BBC Africa security correspondent Tomi Oladipo says Gwoza's capture is a major milestone for the Nigerian army. The town is not far from Chibok, where Boko Haram kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls from a boarding school last April. Our reporter says Gwoza was one of the places where the militants were rumoured to be hiding the girls, who are yet to be found. 'Weapons recovered' After his fighters captured Gwoza in August 2014, the Boko Haram leader declared a caliphate in areas under his control. The militants have been pushed back since Nigeria's neighbours sent troops to help it earlier this year. "These successful operations have culminated in the dislodgment of terrorists from towns and communities in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states," military spokesman Chris Olukolade said. The armed forces also recaptured a police training base near Gwoza Soldiers from Niger (pictured), Chad and Cameroon have been helping in the offensive The recapture of Gwoza was first announced in a tweet from Nigerian armed forces. A lot of arms and ammunition were recovered and "a massive cordon and search has commenced to locate any of the fleeing terrorists or hostages in their custody", Mr Olukolade said. |

Benin - The leadership of Change Advocates of Nigeria, a pressure group in All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo, on Wednesday defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Secretary of the group, Mr Wilson Ajakaiye, who spoke on behalf of the over 2,000 youths, said APC was "desperate to take power.’’ Ajakaiye said the rigours of the office of the President and Vice President cannot at this time accommodate two old men whose health conditions were questionable. "Integrity is not complete when you cannot show your educational certificate openly to the people you wish to govern. "The key elements around Gen. Muhammed Buhari are too desperate to take power by force which negates all elements of change and democratic governance. "Why are the Arab sheikhs suddenly donating millions of dollars to the Buhari Presidential Campaign Organisation? What is their interest in Nigeria? "We, therefore, withdraw all print materials and video jingles in support of Buhari from all media houses across the state’’, he said. Receiving the leadership and members of group, Mr Dan Obih, Chairman of PDP in the State, congratulated them for dumping APC. Obih said the President would continue to transform the nation if re-elected. He urged them to come out en masse and cast their votes for President Jonathan. http://www.news24.com.ng/Elections/News/Group-dumps-APC-drums-support-for-PDP-20150325 |
