A seasoned broadcaster, working with the Cross River State Broadcasting Corporation (CRBC) Radio/TV services, Mr Peter Etim, aka ‘god father’ has been kidnapped.

Mr Etim was kidnapped in the early hours of Friday while going to work.

An eyewitness, who pleaded for anonymity alleged that the victim was abducted in front of his house by unknown gunmen before 6am.

“He was the one on morning duty this Friday. He drove out of his house in Calabar South local government area of Cross River State in the early hours of the day.

“Some gunmen in Police uniform accosted him and took him with his vehicle to unknown destination. We have not gotten in touch with him ever since as his phone was switched off,” he alleged.

When DAILY POST visited the victim’s office at IBB in Calabar, the workers were seen discussing the incident in groups.

Condemning the action of the kidnappers, the State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State Council, Comrade Victor Udu, told our correspondent on phone, “It’s very very sad that a seasoned broadcaster could be easily taken away by people suspected to be security officers.

“What do they want from a journalist, do we have money? Don’t they see politicians to go and kidnap. We appeal to security operatives to make sure that the victim is release without further delay,” he said.

The State Security Adviser to Governor Ben Ayade in the South, Mr Ani Esin told our correspondent on phone that the Department of State Services (DSS) are on top of the situation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, while confirming the story said the Police were on top of the situation.

“The victim will soon be released. The family reported the incident to officer in charge of kidnapping and investigations have commenced,” she said.

A young mother made a miraculous recovery in hospital despite doctors being unable to detect a heartbeat for 72 hours.

The woman, who was not named, was taken to the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University in China’s eastern Fujian Province. Her husband brought her to the hospital on his back at 7:58pm om New Year’s day.

The woman was unconscious and had no heartbeat.

Medics said she suffered from ventricular fibrillation, which is when the heart quivers instead of pumping blood around the body. She was eventually diagnosed with acute myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle.

The team of doctors performed chest compressions for 20 minutes before switching the young woman to life-support system ECMO – extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation – replacing her heart and lung functions with the device, Mirror reports.

In spite of all the efforts made by doctors, the woman remained unresponsive two hours later. Her pupils dilated, and her vital signs failed to return.

By clinical standards, the woman was dead, but the doctors refused to give up.

Doctor Zhang Minwei explained:

I felt that her illness happened too suddenly. At 26 she was still in her prime, and she had no history of diseases.

It was my opinion that we needed to create the conditions for even the slimmest chance of survival.

The patient was kept in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and various other instruments were used to regulate her bodily functions, including respiratory devices and renal replacement therapy.

After 72 hours, a ‘miracle’ happened as her heart restored partial function. By January 7, it was beating on its own. She is now in stable condition and is able to eat by herself. She remains in intensive care as medics continue renal therapy and help her restore full function of her limbs.

The patient’s husband, surnamed Tang, said:

We spent the past few days crying. Now we’re very happy.

We have a one-year-old son at home, too. This family cannot lose its mum.

Doctor Zhang recalled the moment the patient finally came around.

He said:

She opened her eyes, so I tried speaking to her. I asked: ‘Would you like some water? Squeeze my hand for yes.’

She squeezed my hand, and that’s when I knew definitively that she had regained consciousness.

Matias, the elder brother of Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has been sentenced for possessing an illegal firearm.

The 35-year-old received a two-and-a-half year prison sentence on Thursday, August 16, but instead of doing time in prison, he will undertake community service.

According to the report by Argentine newspaper La Capital, investigating prosecutors met before they reached an agreement of Matias not to go to prison any longer. The report added that the firearm was found late in 2017, inside a blood-stained boat which Matias crashed in the Parana River. Matias’ lawyer was also said to have argued that his client crashed the boat into a sandbank and denied that he owned the gun.

23 political parties won’t be fielding candidates nor participating in the Osun state governorship elections scheduled for September 22, 2018.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, made this known on Thursday, August 16, 2018.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, announced that the 23 newly registered political parties will not be allowed to participate in the governorship election in Osun State.

Reasons for stopping 23 parties from participating
Prof. Yakubu explained why the 23 political parties won’t be participating in the Osun state governorship election.

The INEC chairman said the though the political parties have been registered, their registration didn’t meet the deadline for submission of candidates for the governorship election.

“Since the commission has closed nomination for the Osun State governorship election holding on September 22, 2018, none of you can sponsor a candidate for that election,” Yakubu said.

The INEC Chairman, however, congratulated the leaders of the 23 new political parties after handing certificates to the newly registered parties.

He said, “The 23 political parties emerged out of 144 applications received by the commission so far from associations seeking registration as political parties.

“I wish to congratulate the chairmen and leaders of the new political parties for meeting the criteria enshrined in the constitution for your registration as political parties.”

“Needless to add, from today, you are recognised as political parties under the law.

“From today also, you have equal status with any political party in Nigeria. This means you can sponsor candidates for elections including the 2019 general elections.

“From today, you are also members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council.”

Neymar’s behaviour during his switch to Paris St-Germain is the reason for football’s inflated transfer fees, according to Barcelona’s vice-president, BBC Sport reports.
Jordi Mestre said the Brazil forward, 25, played “cat and mouse” with the club before his exit in August.

PSG paid €222m for Neymar, making him the most expensive player in history.

“We would have saved a lot of money and a lot of media noise,” said Mestre.

“What hurt me the most was the way it happened.”

Neymar signed a new five-year deal at Barcelona in July 2016, which included €8.5m renewal bonus.

Mestre said, “If he came to us and said, ‘I want to go’, we would have reached an agreement. What you can’t do is rock the boat.

“He told us nothing. If he had done, PSG would have been able to buy him for less money and it would have cost us less to sign players too.”

Neymar said at the time of his move that he had “followed his heart”.

“The decision was difficult to take,” he said. “I didn’t come for the money. I came for the motivation and the challenge.”

Since Neymar’s departure, Barcelona have spent £142m on signing Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, having brought in Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund for an initial £97m, which could rise to £136m.

Following Neymar’s departure, Barcelona said they would withhold a further 26m euro (£23m) loyalty bonus.

“It arrived at a point where we saw where things were going, so we told him we would not pay his contract renewal loyalty fee,” said Mestre’
