Jokes Etc / 10 Nigerian Phrases That Will Leave You Totally Confused by Godstime23(m): 5:25pm On Sep 12, 2016
1. Hear the smell

Nigerians are weird. They would use this phrase when they are trying to call your attention to a smell or odor. They would rather say hear the smell instead of perceive the smell.

It is only in Nigeria that the nose can be confused with the ears. Those who use this phrase speak the Yoruba language a lot. That is the only way you can explain this phrase as it is being relayed the way a typical Yoruba man will say it in his language.

2. I’m coming

Now this will leave you feeling totally lost; a Nigerian could tell you he is coming when he is actually on his way out. This is a typical Nigerian’s way of saying I’ll be right back. So the next time you hear this, just make sure you tell them ‘bye’ as it could take a while before they return.

3. Dress for me

If you are not a Nigerian, you may go on and do something totally different upon hearing this phrase. When this phrase is being said by a Nigerian, he wants you to adjust and make space for him.

Thus, it is a typical Nigerian’s way of saying ‘please create a space for me’ or better still ‘let me share your space with you’. If you are not a Nigerian, you may confuse this with putting on accessories and wearing special clothes to impress the speaker.

4. Don’t go and be doing shaky shaky there

Now this is funny, at this point we agree that only Nigerians can understand themselves. Reading the above phrase, you will agree with us that it is meaningless and confusing.

But when you hear this from Nigerians, they are probably trying to encourage somebody by telling him to be brave. Therefore, the above phrase means to be brave and not fidget.

5. Stop lying on me

If you hear a man telling your wife over the phone to stop lying on him, a thousand lethal thoughts could pass through your mind if you are not a Nigerian. You would get the whole thing totally wrong and assume something else is going on.

However, Nigerians say this when they ought to say ‘stop lying against me’. This phrase is quite common in Nigeria with virtually every Nigerian speaking that way.

6. I will show you pepper
When Nigerians say they will show you pepper, do not assume they are talking about showing you tomatoes and green peppers. They are trying to tell you they will deal with you.

Nigerians say this when they are not pleased with someone; this is their own way of being vengeful. Nigerians mean they will get back at you for doing something to them when they use the phrase.  You had better watch out when you hear this.

7. I will teach you a lesson

If you think a Nigerian want to teach you something new when you hear this phrase, you are in a big mess. This phrase means you are in for a tough time. Nigerian parents say this a lot when their children are being naughty.

The lesson being talked about here has nothing to do with school; rather it is a life lesson that will teach you how to behave well the next time you are faced with a similar circumstance.

8. Stay in your lane

Nigerians could be dramatic; they say one thing and it would mean a totally different thing. When you are being told to stay in your lane, this means you should mind your business and stop putting your nose in other people’s affairs. But if you are not a Nigerian, you would be left wondering what lane the speaker is talking about.

9. Before nko

Now this is going the Nigerian way. When you hear this, the speaker is indirectly saying ‘what do you expect’. This is a regular phrase in Nigeria as you are bound to hear it in the shortest conversation.

10. For your mind

Nigerians use this phrase when they want to mock your opinion or tell you how lame they think your idea is. Most times, this phrase is always said after they might have done the symbolic twitching of the nose which is known as ‘yimu’ or the lifting of the chin as a sign of disbelief. When this phrase is being used, the speaker is throwing it to your face that a particular move will not work.

Education / Student Withdraw From Uniilorin, says He Got His 0'level Through Malpractice by Godstime23(m): 3:25pm On Sep 12, 2016
Year Three Sociology student of the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN, Kwara State, Mr. Abolarin Jephthah, has purportedly notified the university’s authorities of his decision to withdraw from the institution, confessing that he obtained the results of his West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, through examination malpractices

In a coffessional letter of withdrawal addressed on August 12 to the Deputy Vice Chanellor (Academics), UNILORIN, Professor N. Y. S. Ijaiya, Jephthah was said to have stated that having encountered Jesus Christ and ‘born-again,’ his decision to withdraw from the university was based on his newfound realisation that his foundation was faulty and as such, he can’t continue to be a student of UNILORIN.

The letter circulating on social media and sighted by Vanguard read: “With all sense of humility, I ABOLARIN AKIN JEPHAH with matric number (13/77jd010), a 300 level student in the department of sociology, wish to openly declare the reason why I withdraw from the university. Sir, just as a house that was built on a faulty foundation will definitely collapse.

“All through my secondary school days, I am just a church goer without genuine salvation and the fear of God, as a result of this, I got my WAEC result through examinaion malpractice.

“By the grace of God, now, I have encountered the limelight of the gospel of Jesus Christ which called for repentance and restitution.

“Sir, with deep conviction, I have realised that there is no point of building my academic career on a faulty foundation, since the WAEC result I got through malpractice is the basis in which my admission into this university was anchored.

“Therefore, I have decided to wihdraw from the university and start all over again.”

Politics / Ezekwesili Blames Buhari For Nigeria’s Woes by Godstime23(m): 9:28am On Sep 12, 2016
Former Education Minister, Oby Ezekwesili, has blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for the current economy recession.

Ezekwesili, who stated in a whatsApp message last night, said:  “I still find it funny that most people don’t know why Nigeria economy went into recession. They love the incompetent lies of Lai Mohammed about the past government ruining everything.

‘’It’s also myopic to think that if Jonathan were to still be in power, we would be worse off.

”The truth about Nigeria’s recession is this; it was caused by the president’s unguided rhetoric and uncultured body language.

‘’Firstly, there is nothing we are buying today that we weren’t buying five years ago, therefore it’s not our purchase that put pressure on Naira but withdrawal of funds by foreign investors.

‘’After the election, the President created instability with his statements about how everyone is corrupt and how everyone is going to jail.

‘’The instability made foreign investors to liquidate their investment and change their money to dollars. In the process of trying to flee, they were willing to buy dollars at any price, which lead to high exchange dollar rate.

‘’Even though some of them were not ready to run away, but want their money in dollars to save their investments from devaluation, the president gave a bad signal by banning deposit of foreign currency into domiciliary accounts.”

‘That was enough for free market believers to see the draconian handwriting on the wall, that was the beginning of dollar rush.

‘’To make matters worse, the President came up with another outrageous policy of rationing dollar to certain sectors and blocking many sectors out. That was the nail in the coffin which facilitated the emergence of free fall
Politics / Ize_iyamu Alleges Plans To Re_write Result by Godstime23(m): 9:11am On Sep 12, 2016
Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu on sunday alleged plans by the APC-led government and INEC to re-write results no matter what figures come from the polling units.

He, therefore, said that , “party agents should not be allowed to see how voters vote; there should be safe distance. Illiterate voters should be assisted only by relatives, not by party agents.”

He also urged all eligible voters across the state to be calm and law-abiding, even as he assured them that their votes would count and be protected, on the September 28, 2016, new date for the state governorship election.

He said on his part and on the part of the PDP, they have resolved to be law-abiding and to cooperate with necessary authorities to ensure a hitch free, free and fair election which is the prayer of all Edo people

Politics / The Real Shame In Nigerian Election by Godstime23(m): 11:23am On Sep 11, 2016
The drama that played out before the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC finally postponed the Edo State governorship election earlier scheduled for yesterday is another demonstration of the fledgling state of the country’s democracy.

In deciding to postpone the election, the commission pointed at the still murky “intelligence” reports about a potential breach in security in some states, Edo State inclusive, as claimed by the police and the Department of State Services, DSS.

Though no specific intelligence was cited, the security chiefs left the election management body with no doubt that there would be no security agents available to provide security for the election. Indeed, when the security agencies first issued the statement calling for the postponement, the body language of some senior officials of INEC was to forge ahead with the election irrespective of the consequences.

However, hours after the commission disclosed on Thursday that it would forge ahead with the election, reality, it seemed, dawned on the electoral body. Without security men to police the ballots and keep the thugs at bay, the election could turn into a farce.

The different reactions of the two major political parties to the postponement of the election also seemed to underscore perceptions that the postponement was another intervention into the nation’s electoral programme by the security agencies. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP was livid, describing the action as a plot by the All Progressives Congress, APC to gather steam to restrategise to avoid defeat.

The APC in its reaction was, however, more understanding of the reasons given for the postponement with its national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun at first saying he was “stunned, shocked and surprised” with the initial decision to proceed with the election.

The controversy was a reminder of the intervention made by the erstwhile National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd.) just before the scheduled February 2015 general elections. At that time, Dasuki, an appointee of then ruling PDP had pleaded for a six-week shift of the elections to enable the security agencies combat what was claimed as the insurgency that was rooted in the North-East.

Dasuki’s intervention, many alleged at that time, was simply an attempt to use security to buy time to stop the defeat of the PDP government by the then opposition APC. Some believe that the decision of the APC administration to start its cleansing from the security services instead of the equally corruption infested oil industry was an attempt by the APC administration to serve retribution to Dasuki.

Almost two years after, and with positions reversed, the same security concern about the activities of insurgents was again deployed to compel INEC to shift the elections in Edo State. Just as in 2015, the assertion has been that the APC in Edo State was afraid of defeat and stampeded the security agencies to issue the security alert.

However, just as in 2015 when no evidence of a dalliance between the PDP and the security agencies was proved; there is no such evidence of any conspiracy between the APC in Edo State or Abuja and the security agencies to frustrate the will of the electorate in Edo State despite the assertions of the PDP.

The aborted decision by INEC to forge ahead with the election as programmed, to a degree signposted some measure of independence, if not credibility, in the leadership of the election body. For an electoral body that has been largely battered for the spate of inconclusive elections produced under its watch, the initial show of grit was commendable and creditable.

However, the faux pas, again calls to mind the seemingly animalistic predilection of the Nigerian, nay African politician. That security men are needed to guarantee the sanctity of an election speaks of the brutish inclination of the political class, signifying that without the instruments of coercion as wielded by the Army and the Police, that the simple choice of choosing political leaders would end up in fisticuffs. That is a shame!
