Recently, I made some comments on a post correcting another nairalander about his assumptions on Nzeogwu's origins, his father, etc. I made them in good faith, without thinking about tribal things (and the corrections I made do not change the fact that Nzeogwu did overthrow the government of Nigeria in 1966). First comment quoting me accused me, in essence , of arguing for an Igbo agenda.

Even economic discussions turn into tribal war. Crime pages too...tribal war.

Lagos-Ibadan express media keeps talking about only the Jan 1966 coup and its plotters.

There were many more coups. I’ll try to name them.

1. Jan 1966
2. July 1966 (counter coup)
3. July 1975
4. February 1976 (failed coup)
5. December 1983
6. August 1985
7. April 1990 (failed coup)
8. August 1993

Of all these coups, only the Jan 1966 coup was carried out by Ibo officers, (not only ibo officers were involved). This same coup was foiled by another Ibo officer. All other coups and attempts were carried out by majorly non- Ibo people. No other Ibo man had ruled as military or civilian leader since the first military coup in Nigeria.

Let’s assume the leader (Aguiyi Ironsi) in 1966 Jan coup made some government decisions that were not good, why was it difficult for successive governments (military and civilian) to return to what it was before the Jan 1966 coup. That government barely lasted 6 months before it was taken down by another coup.

All Nigerian leaders past and present failed. If the leaders were doing so good for the people, the first coup wouldn’t have happened. There’s always been injustice in Nigeria and that’s the major problem we’ve always had.

The good aspects of the whole thing is that Chukwuma 'Kaduna' Nzeogwu is from Delta State, in Niger Delta Region. This Region has been feeding Nigeria since 1960 till date.
Ideally since you still want to cling to the past, you should have as well stop eating fat from the resources of that region & face front.
But you want to continue to eat fat of their resources but still claiming of some past bitterness & some funny sense of entitlement.. Oga e make sense to you?

What lead to the coup and civil war according to him

The massacre of the Igbos in the north lead to the coup actually, when those massacre happened govt didn't really arrest or punish anyone of note.
The Igbos were aggrieved and that what lead to coup of January 15th 1966. The igbos in the military already had bad blood towards the northerners.

They made a big mistake killing leaders from other region cos the bad blood was between the igbo and hausa at that time. Assuming those boys killed only northerners he felt things won't really have gone bad.

The coup was to achieve two things

1.Pay back the north for the igbos killed. since there was no hausa to kill in the east they felt killing hausa/fulani leaders will hurt more.

2. Sieze power and avoid punishment under military rule by handing over to someone they trust won't betray them.
So everything was pre planned and Aguyi ironsi was aware from the get go.

Aguyi Ironsi was the major reason why things got bad cos he refused to do what is right and show his card to early.
Abolishing region government and failing to prosecute those who executed the Babaraic coup compounded things.

Why was it tagged igbo coup

It a fact 90% of the people who carried out the coup are Igbos and they only killed leaders in other region.
What made people tagged it Igbos coup was the body language of the igbos in general at that time.
They were unapologetic about it and was in total support of the coup claiming corrupt leaders were killed but obviously they gained more from the act of this few.
At this point trust was lost and the military was in total disarray, despite the Igbos has lot of senior officers cos they were more educated the junior officers were mostly hausa hence why the next coup was easy.

In has much I agree the igbo coup tag is wrong cos not all igbos told those few soliders to do that nonsense but the fact remains majority of Igbos were totally in support of what those guys did according to baba.

Aguyi ironsi failed to court Marshall those boys and rather choose to grab power totally but unfortunately he is a igbo man like majority of the coup plotters and that move irked alot of Nigerians.

That day brought Nigeria to her knees, trust and bond in brotherhood was scattered cos the actions of this few.
