Travel / Dana Air: Owners, History Of Plane Crashes, Other Facts by Godwindiji: 12:09pm On Mar 20, 2021
Dana Airlines Limited started operations in November 2008. Headquartered in Ikeji, they pride themselves as “The Smartest way to Fly”. In just over a dozen years of existence, Dana Air has made tons of news. They have become a well-known name even beyond the aviation industry and they are not always in the news for the good stuff. As a Top 50 brand in Nigeria, we took a sharp look at them and here is what we found out about one of the leading Nigerian airlines.

Dana Air ownership

After the crash of its plane, then Dana Air group communications manager Tony Usidamen denied that the company is foreign-owned. He was quoted as saying, “Dana Group is a wholly-owned registered company in Nigeria.”

This is not the whole truth as Dana Air is a subsidiary of Dana Group, a company founded in 1991 by Birbal Singh Dana in Dubai. Dr. Dana is an Indian surgeon whose service includes fifteen years in the University Hospital in Libya. And notice that the quote didn’t say wholly-owned by Nigerians; it said “wholly-registered”. Shoprite for instance is wholly-registered in Nigeria, not Nigerian-owned. Wholly-registered, too, not being the same with solely-registered.

Besides aviation, Dana Group is into electronics, pharmaceuticals, surgical equipment, polyethylenes, water bottling, automobiles, steel, manufacturing, importation, and exportation of commodities across the globe, especially in Asia and Africa.

Celebrities / Laycon: Where Do You See The Star In Ten Years Time? Our Writers Weighed In by Godwindiji: 11:48am On Mar 20, 2021
Since the return of Big Brother Naija in 2017, after its 2006 debut, the winners have always been obvious on the last day and sometimes, for a large chunk of the season. During the See Gobbe Season, 2017, it was clear to many that Efe was the candidate to beat; he won. During Double Wahala Season, 2018, Miracle was the standout candidate and, despite a late rally by Cee-C, he won. The 2019 Pepper Dem House had Mercy Eke and Tacha running head-to-head. Tacha got into a fight with Mercy and was disqualified for assaulting Mercy; Mercy then won the show largely unchallenged. Last year, the Lockdown House had Laycon and Erica running nearly head-to-head until Erica got herself disqualified. Laycon won with a record 60% of the votes in a tally that saw Neo and Vee settling for 1% each.

But after the pomp and pop of winning a reality show comes reality itself. How would Laycon fair in the real world? We have seen a few months of him and he isn’t doing badly but will his relevance outlive the next Big Brother show? For how long? Would we be talking about Laycon in ten years’ time because he is a force in his chosen industry or would he be a stuff of nostalgia?

We asked our contributors to air their views.

Nairaland / General / Nairaland: Six Ways The Forum Has Proved Super Useful by Godwindiji: 11:17am On Mar 20, 2021
Nairaland. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone with internet access who has never heard of this site. Nay, hearing about the site is given; a more plausible move would be to check the number of Nigerians with internet access who have never visited Nairaland before. Nairaland is that massive. Founded by Seun Osewa in 2005, the site has gone beyond just being a forum, it has become part of the culture of Nigeria. An internet culture. Some would argue that Nairaland has lost its power with the advent of Twitter and blogs, but as this post would prove, Nairaland is very important and still relevant.

Here are six ways Nairaland has proved super reliable.

It’s Nigerian’s first social media site

The Social Media era in Nigeria began with Nairaland. Nairaland was the go-to site for browsers looking to connect with people, chat, swap gossip and banters, and generally catch “cruise”. Social Media influencer marketing which has been become a big deal began with Nairaland where some accounts would amass huge followings and views in six figures.

The idea of going viral also began here as your post could get quoted so many times. Getting to the home page, too, was reverberating to content and posters. Nairaland is the site where future Social Media bigwigs tasted blood which drove them to the wires when Facebook and Twitter became an item.

Culture / Popular Dreaded Deities Across Igboland by Godwindiji: 9:43pm On Feb 22, 2021
African traditional belief is one that has transcended years of watering down and abuse by different cadres of religion. Africa’s sovereignty was not the only thing hijacked during the era of colonialism, African traditional religion suffered a hit too.

Igbo people are known for their belief in several deities, attaching spirituality to everything they do. it is true that the coming of Christianity has drastically weakened the structure and belief in these deities nonetheless these deities still hold firm, attracting devout worshippers across the globe.

In Igboland, polytheism is the order, and here are some of the popular deities across Igboland.

Alaogbaga

Alaogbaga, a name that strikes fear in the heart of many, mostly the unjust and guilty, a deity that has its homestead in the town of Chokoneze Ezinihiite Mbaise, Imo state.

Before the advent of Christianity and modernization, Alaogbaga was the law and order, the consciousness of the deity was one that stayed forefront in the mind of the people. The name was derived from Earth = Ala (this is the main name of the deity – Ala) and Ogbaga = a particular species of yam cultivated by the people of Umueze. The shrine is located strategically close to the market square at the center of the village, which firmly positions her as the eye and protector of the town.

The goddess is dreaded not because of fear of death but her intolerance for injustice and striking down offenders. Her sacred animal is Tortise, believed to parade the town making sure that things are in order. Calamity befalls anyone who mistakenly hurts the totems and does not appease the deity.

In Chokoneze, the worshippers of Alaogbaga deity attribute socio-religious function to the deity; control of crimes, settling of disputes, protection of norms, cultures, and traditions, promotion of human rights, promotion of love and peace, security, etc. It serves justice and enhances morality in the community.

These days the name of Alaogbaga doesn’t instill fear as it did back then.

Ogwugwu

The shrine, which is located in Umuhu community, Ukpor town, Nnewi-South Local Government Area of Anambra State, is situated merely a stone throw away from the Nnewi-South Local Government Secretariat.

According to myths, no one knows exactly the origin of the deity, though it is said to have existed since over a century ago.

The deity is said to be a goddess, and wife to the god – Urasi – another deity. The goddess, reputed to abhor lies and any form of injustice, is dreaded and renowned for her swiftness in discerning and striking to death any guilty party in any matter brought before her.

It is because of these believed powers, plus the credibility and accessibility of the Ogwugwu Umuhu Ukpor, that make the shrine, not just a hub where people come to seek the goddess’ favor, but also a favorite place where individuals from different regions and even religions, come for oath-taking, and to lay complaints about any kind of civil disputes.

Odiete Amoke Inyi

The deity famed for his protection of his people, the people of Edemani village in Enugu state. The deity originally called Odiete, was named after its founding father, Amoke Inyi.

Amoke Inyi, according to stories was a slave sold into slavery to the court of a renowned herbalist in Igala by slave catchers who kidnapped him, as the story goes he learned all the secrets of herbalism from his master. In the seventh year of his service, he escaped when he learned of his impending sacrificial death for the renewal of his master’s power and charms. He prepared a charm that guided him which was revered on his arrival

The shrine of Odiete Amoke Inyi in Edemani is classified into two. The shrine in the forest and the shrine at home.

The home/domesticated shrine. This is the shrine that is located at “Uno” in Owerre Ugwu. The shrine has lesser principles that govern the proper conduct, administration, and mode of worship of the deity. Women are allowed to enter some apartments of this shrine (home shrine). Women do sweep the environment of the shrine and also do fetch water that is used in conducting certain rituals and sacrifices in this shrine. They can also witness some rituals in this shrine and also take part in cultural dance activities of the “Igba Nkwa” day which is a ceremony done in memory of the deity”.

Strangers and researchers are allowed to enter into some of the apartments of the home shrine

The forest shrine: The forest shrine of Odiete Amoke Inyi is situated somewhere in the Owerre forest of Edemani. The exact location is unknown to outsiders as movements in the forest region where it is situated is restricted.

The forest shrine is the most powerful shrine of Odiete Amoke Inyi. Even the priest and chief priest of the deity take precautions before entering the forest shrine.

What was more; women are prohibited from eating anything used for sacrifice in the forest shrine let alone taking part in the aspect of the forest shrine administration and worship

Idemili

One of the most popular deities in Igboland, stories have been told about the might and wrath of this goddess. Movies have been made telling stories in reverence of the Idemili, a powerful water goddess whose wrath is famed.

The deities is regarded as the goddess of all water bodies hence, the name ‘Idemili’ which literally translates as the pillar of water. According to the community’s creation story, she is the progenitor of the people of Idemili which is where the name of the town is derived from.

Idemili shrine, called Nkua is in Obosi. It is a powerful place and before someone becomes the king of this community, he must visit the shrine. It is only the Igwe and the Iyesele that are entitled to visit the shrine before they assume office. It is a very secret shrine.

The deity’s totemic symbol is a python, in the town of Idemili and its environs snakes are considered sacred animals, It is taboo to k**l the snake, some people have the royal python as a pet. The Idemili water that flows through the town is considered the abode of the Eke Idemili. The royal python is believed to have on many occasions have visited indigenes of Idemili who live outside the community to deliver special messages to them.

Nwannachima
The deity whose totemic symbol is a catfish is a female goddess of the people of Mgbom Okposi, Ebonyi state.

Nwannachima is a goddess of fertility, the hallowed pace is a sacred cave with a body of water. Water from the cave is fetched for barren women to drink which is believed to enable them to conceive. Hence, after the birth of such a child, he or she will be named after the goddess Chima Mgbum Ike. The symbol of this deity is the catfish which is not meant to be killed

Nairaland / General / There Is Igbo Money And, Then There Is Nnewi Money By Anaedoonline by Godwindiji: 7:19am On Feb 20, 2021
There is Igbo money and then there is Nnewi money, this is a mantra that is common when people are talking about the wealth of the Igbo men.

The Igbo people of South East, Nigeria are known for their penchant in the world of business. Their business acumen is one that has been unrivaled for years amongst other tribes in Nigeria, hence, for every discussion about business and money, the Igbos leads the chart.

1970, the end of the civil war, the Nigerian government passed an unfriendly policy stipulating that all bank accounts belonging to the people of Biafra be seized and 20 pounds given to every Igbo person that has an account. The policy not only rendered every Igbo person penniless, but their properties were also confiscated.

It’s worthy of note that before the civil war, Igbos were already making giant strides in the world. Louis Odumegwu Ojukwu founded the Nigerian Stock Exchange, he was commonly referred to as the first black billionaire. He was not the only affluent Igbo man then, Imagine other people like him who had these before made to start life with just 20 pounds.

Back to zero, with the formidable Igbo hustling spirit, these people started rebuilding from the scratch.

Fast forward to 2021, at the helm of almost every business in Nigeria is the Igbos. Somehow they have been able to grow 20 pounds to billions of naira.

Today, the Igbos are known for their money, they are easily the richest tribe in Nigeria with the highest concentration of millionaires and billionaires. Home and abroad, Igbo people are excelling and raking in cash and they sure do not hesitate to flaunt it. The Igbos has billionaires like Linda Ikeji- one of the biggest blogs in Africa, Tony Elumelu- former Chairman of UBA, Jim Ovia-founder of Zinox technologies, Arthur Eze- runs Atlas Petroleum, Emeka Offor- oil and gas tycoon, and several others.

These individuals single-handedly take up community projects, setting up youths in their village. A few days ago, the media was agog with the news of Chief Joseph Ezeokafor donating 10 million naira for road construction in his hometown, Ekwulobia

The Igbo money is long but what about Nnewi money?

List Of 15 Billionaires Who Are From Africa And Their Net Worth

Home to the first black billionaire, Nnewi, in the southeastern state of Anambra, either by good fortune or hard work, has bred more naira billionaires than any other town in Nigeria, and possibly Africa. Nicknamed the Japan of Africa, Nnewi is famous as a hub for automobile spare part dealers, and most recently, Innoson, Nigeria’s first indigenous car assembly plant. The town is also known for its factories that manufacture household goods and is home to the biggest road transport companies in the country. Nnewi, with a little over two million residents, is a 30-minute drive from the Onitsha – the biggest outdoor market in West Africa – on the banks of the Niger River.

Nnewi has a concentration of billionaires that cannot be compared to other towns. Billionaires like:
Cletus Ibeto

Cosmos Maduka

Innocent Chukwuma

Gabriel Chukwuma

Alexander Chika Okafor

Augustine Ilodibe

Ifeanyi Ubah

Obiajulu Uzodike

Louis Onwugbenu

These are just a few amongst many billionaires in this small town, their secret of wealth is one that has been called into question many times. But whatever the Nnewi people are doing, they are surely getting it right.

Nairaland / General / INVESTIGATION: Real People Behind The Nkwo Nnewi Fire Disaster by Godwindiji: 12:18pm On Feb 18, 2021
Anaedoonline reported yesterday, February 17th 2021 that “goods worth millions were burnt to ashes at the popular Timber Market Nkwo Nnewi.

Narrating what led to the fire outbreak, an eye witness who does not want his name to be mentioned told our reporter that the fire started when some policemen who were on routine patrol, engaged in a hot chase with some drug dealers in the area, who ran inside the bush for safety.

The drug dealers lighted up the bush to prevent the Policemen from smoking them out, but unfortunately, it resulted in many businesses losing their goods worth millions”.

However Anaedoonline learnt from further investigations what really happened was that some miscreants invaded the drug dealers zone in Nnewi to take over, however the traders beside the zone then invited the Policemen to help them chase the miscreants out of the zone.

The Policemen arrived to chase the miscreants out but the miscreants ran to a nearby bush to hid there and set it up on fire to prevent the Policemen from moving further. When the Policemen now left to reinforce themselves, the miscreants now came out from there hiding place and alerted the public that it was the Policemen were behind the fire.

Anaedoonline further learnt that this same miscreants were behind the invasion of the Endsars protesters last year and posed as one of them and used same alibi in destroying all the police stations in Nnewi and using same opportunity to freed some of their members who were in police cells and further stealing police arms and ammunitions.

Celebrities / Flavour N’abania: I Had My First S*x At 24 by Godwindiji: 10:31pm On Feb 16, 2021
Nigerian singer, Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as “Flavour” has revealed that he was a virgin till 24.

The father of three made this known in an interview with Ebuka on Bounce Radio.

Flavour also recalled living with a man who had no TV, would not allow women in and also prohibited intake of alcohol.

According to him, living with the man made it impossible for him to associate with women at that time.

“My connection To Chidimma Is Terrible – Flavour Opens Up On His Relationship With Chidimma

“I was a virgin till I was 24-years-old. This was possible because the first man I used to live with who was also the first man I served never granted me access to television.

“There was no television, no woman, no alcohol and no s*x till I became 24.

“The worse part of everything was that I was staying with a man that wasn’t even married, so there was no room for that. With him, it was just work and continuous work because then, it seemed like I already had one particular lifestyle.

“Unfortunately too, as of that time, there was no proper s*x education, so I wasn’t really being educated on how these things work.

“I was finally ‘disvirgined’ by a random girl I met at one of my shows then. She made the moves towards me, and after she found out I was still a novice in that area, she vowed to make me a man.

“But in honesty, it has been a different story since then,” he said.

Crime / *controversy Trails The Whereabout Of Kidnapped Nnewi Traditional Ruler* by Godwindiji: 7:51pm On Feb 16, 2021
There is growing uncertainty over the state and whereabout of kidnapped Nnewi Traditional Ruler.

Earlier this morning, news filtered in that His Highness, Obi Charles Afamefuna Obi (Ogidi IV), the Traditional Ruler of Uruagu Nnewi, have secretly returned to his palace.

Although Anaedoonline.ng could not authenticate the news of his returns as sources inside the palace have all denied the return, it was alleged that the Traditional Ruler, His Highness, Obi Charles Afamefuna Obi (Ogidi IV), after being smuggled into the palace late Sunday night, directed that all the entrance to the palace should be closed.

However, our correspondent who visited the palace this evening, reported that people seen in the palace claimed that the Traditional Ruler is still in the den of the kidnappers.
Further attempt to get the reaction of the close allies of the Traditional Ruler proved abortive as they all declined to comment on the issue.

A visit to the Nnewi Central Police Station by our correspondent, was not welcomed, as the police officer seen in the police station said that the kidnapping incident didn’t take place in their jurisdiction, noting that it is within the jurisdiction of the police station in Orafite, where the Traditional Ruler was kidnapped.

The Traditional Ruler’s whereabout and his alleged stealthy return to Nnewi raises concerns as uncertainty persists over the state of his well-being.

It will be recalled that Anaedoonline.ng reported that the Traditional Ruler was kidnapped on his way back to Nnewi, on Friday, 12th February, 2021, after attending the burial of the wife of the Traditional Ruler of Orafite, His Royal Highness, Igwe Dr. Dan Udoji.

Obi Charles who personally drove himself to Orafite without any security detail, was abducted after the gunmen were said to have surrendered him after shooting sporadically into the air.

Health / Anambra Lawmaker Shares His Scary Covid-19 Experience by Godwindiji: 11:04am On Feb 15, 2021
Below is his post on Facebook;

My closest shave with death!

4th February, in preparation for a trip I was supposed to embark on Sunday, 7th, I decided to visit a mechanic workshop to change oil and break pads. After spending hours at the workshop, I left for a car wash. It took another two hours to get my car thoroughly washed.

While at the car wash, my wife visited. We stayed for some minutes and I asked her to go because it was already getting late. At that point, I was having some feverish feelings. Yes… The normal fever stuff. I mummured to myself, ‘why this fever now’? As I’m planning to embark on a journey in about two days time. After my wife had left, my car completely washed, I set out to go back to the village since I have been operating from there since Christmas.

On entering my car to leave, I bumped into my good friends, the Ahanekus, they were on their way back from work. We had a light evening out and I dropped them off at Aroma junction. Remember, all these while, I was still having the febrile feeling, I even told my friends that I was having fever… Ordinary fever! As I dropped my friends, I entered Peez pharmacy and bought a pack of my usual malaria drugs, Coatem 80/480, and a card of panadol.

Fast forward… I took my malaria drugs till Saturday afternoon, at this time, the fever had greatly subsided, but I have started coughing small small. Yeah you heard me right…

Ordinary cough. By Saturday evening, I placed a phone call, the phone call that eventually saved my life, the phone call that made it possible for me to be typing this message now, the phone call that kept me alive.

I called Dr. Vincent Okpala, the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Anambra State and narrated my ordeals with him. He was surprised because he knew that I was an advocate of good medical practice.

There and then, he forwarded a list of about 6 Covid-19 drugs for me to buy. He insisted that I must get all the drugs that Saturday evening and started taking them same evening. It didn’t take me much time to get the drugs and started taking them same day.

By Sunday, the cough persisted, though, without any complications. The Hon. Commissioner continued calling to check on me. Monday morning, I was already becoming weak, my breathing became a little irregular. I informed my commissioner who advised that I should look for a place to check my oxygen saturation level.

Since I was still in the village, I was left with no other option than to relocate back to Awka. I got to Awka, visited a hospital where they noticed that my oxygen saturation was hovering between 92 to 96 percent. I reported back to the Hon. Commissioner and he advised that I should monitor it more across the night.

Tuesday morning, I woke up, checked my oxygen saturation, low and behold, it was 91 percent. I kept checking it constantly. By noon, I woke up from a nap only to realise that my oxygen saturation had further dropped to 89 percent. I reported to the Commissioner who asked me to immediately come to his office.

At this time, something strange began to happen. An inexplicable fear engulfed my entire body. Yes fear! The type of fear that I couldn’t even trace the source. In fact I began to imagine myself in a casket, I imagined my body being lowered to the mother earth. A lot of nasty thinking. My wife broke down.

My friends were heartbroken. No amount of preaching could lift my spirit. I was convinced that I had less than 48 hours to live. A lot of counsellings, phone call etc all fall on a deaf ear. I saw myself dressed in KSJI robe and well stretched in a beautifully decorated casket. I called my wife and started advising her on how to take care of the kids after I have gone.

Back to the Hon. Commissioner’s office, he took time to monitor my oxygen saturation for more than 30 minutes and found out that I may not make it across the night without an urgent support.

He advised I be moved to any of the protective care centres or any private hospital of my choice. For proximity, we settled for Apex Hospital close to the Secretariat. On getting to the hospital, one very young doctor, Dr. Ebuka Umeh took over my case. He fixed me with oxygen support immediately.

Dr. Ebuka, cured majority of my fear problems unknowingly. One Mrs. Jennifer that worked with the Hon. Commissioner, was able to remove my fear by 20 percent, Dr. Ebuka removed another 60 percent and thought of living gradually came back to me.

Friends, I was in oxygen support from Tuesday evening to Wednesday morning, Wednesday morning to Wednesday evening, Wednesday evening to Thursday morning, Thursday morning to Thursday evening, Thursday evening to Friday morning. Yes, Ogbuefinukoefi was in a life support all this while.

By Wednesday evening, the result of the Covid-19 test for which they collected my samples on Tuesday was out and it was POSITIVE! I tested positive to Covid-19! This is no joke.

I had my first Covid-19 test on Tuesday 19th January, alongside my colleagues in the office and my result was NEGATIVE. 3 weeks after, I tested POSITIVE. Just within 3 weeks.

My good friends, I took this time to narrate my story, even when I’m not yet strong enough, for you people to know that Covid-19 is real and its ravaging our society. It’s important to note that any fever, any headache, any cough and any catarrh should NOT be taking with a pinch of salt at this time. If you have any of these symptoms, kindly treat Covid-19 first. Yes, go for Covid-19 treatment first. Any little delay can be fatal.

I am alive today because God wants me to be alive. I thank in no small measures, the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Anambra State, Dr. Vincent Okpala, this man is a dogged fighter.

He never accepts defeat. The young Dr. Ebuka Umeh, working with Apex hospital is another genius in the making. This young man, ever ready to learn, will go places. Finally to my beautiful wife, my wonderful kids, the kids that sent their prayers from Abuja, my good friends and relations, all your prayers will never be in vain.

Covid-19 is real and here with us, killing our people every day under various names. Please let’s be very careful.
