Wike set to re-position basic education in Rivers By NAN | 17 July 2017 | 4:33 pm Nyesom Wike Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers said on Monday that his administration had accessed N5.6 billion from the Universal Basic Education Commission Fund (UBEC) for the development of primary schools in the state. Wike made the statement when members of the House Committee on Basic Education and Services paid him a courtesy visit in Port Harcourt. Wike assured the committee of the state’s readiness to commence the rehabilitation of 174 primary schools in the state. He said that the state was able to access the funds because it had paid up its counterpart fund. “When we came on board, we discovered that the immediate past administration did not access UBEC funds because it failed to pay counterpart funds. “We have paid the counterpart funds and we have accessed N5.6 billion which would be used for the total rehabilitation of primary schools,” he said. He also said that the last administration took some steps towards amending the UBEC Act, to enable it accommodate secondary education. The governor explained that the amendment process had yet to be concluded and urged the Federal Government to ensure that the process was concluded, to boost the sub-sector. “The amendment of the UBEC Act to accommodate senior secondary education was started by the last administration, but it was not concluded. ” I, therefore, call for the amendment of the Act to ensure that the commission undertakes the funding of senior secondary education in the country.” Wike, who was a former Minister of State for Education, said that rather than establish another commission to cater for infrastructural needs of senior secondary schools, UBEC should be empowered by law to do so. Earlier, Mr Zakari Mohamned, the Chairman, House Committee on Basic Education and Services, said that the committee was in the state to ascertain the extent of the utilisation of the UBEC fund. He commended the state government on its plan to channel the funds to infrastructural development of primary schools in the state. https://m.guardian.ng/news/wike-set-to-re-position-basic-education-in-rivers/ |

temple4real: NUT applauds Buhari’s administration, appeals for payment of outstanding salaries nigeriatoday.ng May 29, 2017 10:45 AM The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on Monday applauded the Buhari led administration for its achievements, especially in the educational sector and appealed for intervention on teachers’ unpaid salary arrears.
The Acting Secretary General of the union, Dr Mike Ike-Ene, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that the applause became necessary considering the relative peace in the country since its inception.
“Although I will not say that we have gotten it correctly, when there is relative peace to an extent, we can now say that there is progress.
“At least one thing this administration has done is being a little proactive to issues concerning education and other areas.
“This government is more open to dialogue, negotiation and discussion and when these things are involved in any issues, parties concerned understand themselves better,” he noted.
Ike-Ene also decried the rate at which some state governments were owing teachers’ salary arrears for months.
According to him, Benue, Bayelsa, Osun and Imo governors, among others, are owing primary school teachers several months of salary arrears.
“As I talk to you now our teachers in Benue primary schools are owed 10 months salary arrears and they are still working; 10 good months people cannot put food on their table.
“ There are cases whereby the father and the mother are teachers, are they going to rob bank before they put food on their table; not only Benue, Bayelsa also owes eight good months.
“In Osun, very many states; in Imo state our teachers are paid in percentages; primary school teachers are owed various sums of money in various states.
Ike-Ene, however, called on the Federal Government to call the governors concerned to order, saying that teachers would stop work at those states that owed. OK ! what about teachers promotion and improved welfare via salary increment? |

temple4real: The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) yesterday said that presentation of certificates and degrees would no longer suffice for teachers’ registration. The TRCN Director, Professional Operations, Dr Steve Nwokeocha, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that teachers would now write professional qualifying examinations. “Teachers will no longer get registered by mere presentation of their certificates, but they will have to write professional examination. “Teachers are to resume professional qualifying examinations, and the models are being developed and finalised,’’ he said. Nwokeocha said the council was developing a standard syllabus as a professional body and would present it to stakeholders like National Universities Commission, among others, for validation. According to him, once it is validated, we will set a date for the examination, and from there henceforth, there will be no registration without an examination. He said that in 2008, a pilot examination was written and over 50,000 candidates wrote the examination in all states of the federation. The director said this would be the second edition of the examination, adding that the first was experimental and recorded huge success. He said that the council collaborated with the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in the first edition, stressing that it was written in the same manner that JAMB was written. Nwokeocha said about 25,000 out of the 50,000 teachers that wrote the examination failed and this was reflective of the quality of training that they were getting. “We had to suspend the pilot examination because the council did not have a syllabus at that time. “And people asked that a few more things like a model, among others, should be put in place before the examination will be conducted again,’’ he said. He said that the council had done its research and had developed a standard model, syllabus among others. He added that the examination would be written twice yearly and that the council was making efforts to ensure standard and quality in the system. I think this is a misplacement of priority, the focus should be on continuous teachers training and retraining via workshops and seminars and not writing an exam only once in a lifetime. Nigeria, I hail thee |

barikay: I have been contemplating if I should enrol for NTI pgde due to all these news, but this may put me under financial pressure because I did not plan for it now but later. I read all over again, their point of emphasis is on professional certification from TRCN even with B. ed after May ,2017 their certificate is no longer free for you unless you write and pass their professional exam. I need further clarification. From common sense those who are none education graduates will have to write the exam and be certified by the council to teach. Sacking those who are none B.ed can not work because the education sector need more hands than B.ed alone can handle. When u consider Nysc teachers, npower teachers, master holders and PhD holders who are lecturers these are none educational graduate. Rivers State alone, our sch will be deserted of teaching staff. All these are pointer to the flaws in the news its OK brother. I will still advice to get that diploma from NTI like am doing cause the knowledge that will be gotten from it wont be wasted.. but to get it cause of the panic from this news? chai ! |

Federal Government To Sack Teachers Without Professional Certificate

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Professor Olusegun Ajiboye has warned that the Federal Government will not allow any teacher without the professional certificate of the council to teach beyond 2017. Professor Ajiboye, who made this known in Ibadan, explained that the policy was part of the three-year Ministerial Strategic Plan designed by the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu. He said the council would stop the present form of registration that did not entail any examination at the end of May 2017, while the first professional qualifying examination of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria would take place at the end of September 2017. According to Professor Ajiboye, the policy was designed to fully professionalise teaching in Nigeria and ensure that only those who are qualified to teach are employed by the government for quality assurance. While noting that the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari would not joke with professionalism in the teaching profession, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer added that teachers who registered on or before May thirty-one, 2017, would be exempted from the qualifying examinations. if I talk now. them go say I wan insult someone. even my basic six pupils can understand this simple English language ''...federal Government will not allow any teacher without the professional certificate of the council ...'' it means whether you have b.sc. or b.ed 'if you are not registered by TRCN and do not possess their professional certificate. you will be in trouble.. it has nothing to do with victimizing non educational graduates. whether you posses b.ed or not. go to your zonal office ask for the TRCN form and fill ' we've already filled ours since March '. na wa |

Juenwume: My friend, one of the reasons why so many teachers are poor is fear. Nobody should cause you panic. Are you satisfied with the job? A job after 10 years your salary remain the same? Is that not stagnation? If anybody wanted to sack you then thank God cos God has prepared a better place for you. A better job for you. Won't you like to end well? Wike came to power and there was wide spread rumour he would sack 13000 but today you're in the job. At times when ppl come up with stories based on what they hear, employ your reasoning. If they wanna sack holders of non educational certificate, how many teachers will be left teaching? How many will be productive? How many will be efficient? How many will teach maths the way i taught? may God bless you every two two minutes. no be non indigenes again. now na non educational graduates. SMH |
