8 in 10 Nigerians support new national ID card Category: NewsPublished on Saturday, 28 September 2013 05:00Written by Ruby LeoHits: 41 Tweet 7 Share 2 Like 0 Share Eight in 10 Nigerians support the introduction of the new national identification (ID) card scheme, according to a survey by the NOI Polls Limited. The weekly polls added that 60 percent of those interviewed said the national ID card will serve as a means of identification and proof of citizenship. However, despite the overwhelming support for the new National ID card scheme, majority of the respondents (about 58 percent) are not aware of the new ID card scheme, indicating the need for more public awareness on benefits of obtaining the new national ID card, particularly its implications for security, immigration and financial inclusion. Recently, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and MasterCard Incorporated formed a partnership for the purpose of rolling out the new national identity cards in Nigeria as approved by the Federal Government. The new ID card will have 13 applications, including MasterCard’s prepaid payment technology which was introduced to enhance financial inclusion and boost the cashless policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The new ID card would serve as a formal electronic payment solution in the country which would in turn enhance security, convenience and reliability of electronic payments through unique National Identification Numbers (NIN) of duly registered persons. NOI Polls Limited conducted the survey to gauge the perception of Nigerians regarding the proposed new scheme, and the process of obtaining the existing national ID card. About 6 in 10 (62 percent) Nigerians claimed to have the old ID card, majority (48 percent of 62 percent) said they encountered difficulty in obtaining the card, and reiterated the need for government to simplify the procedures. |
