South African firefighters in Canada to fight wildfires Under a scorching sun, 200 South African firefighters wrapped up a last round of training on Tuesday before flying out to help Canada battle unprecedented forest blazes there. It is a rare offer of aid from a developing country battling its own crises. They are a second batch of fighters flying out to the North American nation where nearly 17,800 square miles of forest have burned since the beginning of the year, well above previous averages, amid climate change. The first group of more than 200 South African firefighters deployed to Canada’s province of Alberta early last week. The deployment is in response to “an urgent request” from the Canadian forest fire agency, according to South Africa’s Ministry of Forest and Environmental Affairs. In the last month fires have erupted in almost every province across Canada and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has acknowledged: “Our resources are stretched.” As a consequence, Canada has had to juggle resources and call in reinforcements from abroad. South Africa is just one of the nations coming to Canada’s aid, with Australia, the United States, Mexico, New Zealand, France, Spain and Portugal also among those sending firefighters. Canada and South Africa 2019 signed a memorandum of understanding “to assist each other in case of emergency regarding veld and forest fires,” Peter van de Merwe, a forestry scientist who will be leading the group, told AFP in the eastern city of Mbombela, where the team has been preparing for its mission overseas. The firefighters are from ‘Working on Fire’, an organisation funded by the country’s environmental ministry that recruits and trains unemployed people aged between 18 and 35. Dubbed Mzanzi Hotshots-2 the “highly qualified” firefighters will leave for Edmonton, Canada on Wednesday. They are “well prepared and excited” to go, remarks van de Merwe on the sidelines of the training. Drawn from every corner of South Africa, many from impoverished backgrounds, fewer than 20 of the firefighters have ever been abroad. “It will be a big pleasure to represent my country,” Pontsho Lefifi, 27, told AFP surrounded by bushes and greenery at the remote training camp, 300 kilometres northeast of Johannesburg. Canada’s unemployment rises to 5.2% It is “an opportunity for everyone to see that I’m… (one of) the 25 per cent of women” in the group gearing up to quell the raging fires in Canada, said the proud 27-year-old mother of one from the capital Pretoria. Working on Fire currently has over 5,300 firefighters with more than a third being female, one of the highest percentage of women in any firefighting organisation in the world. – ‘We will do it’ – At a dam nearby, the exhilaration is palpable as a small group practises pumping water into a hose. “Go Mbokodo!” a male member of the teak shouts, using a colloquial term for a young woman, as a female firefighter waves a hose into the bushes. For many of the firefighters, this is more than just a job, in a country reeling under a 32,9 percent unemployment rate, one of the highest in the world. This is an opportunity to help “put food on the table”, said one of the crew managers, Komane Sewetsi, 35, who has spent most of his adulthood jobless. “Everybody is feeling grateful because of… the experience we are going to get there and knowledge we are going to gain,” added Sewetsi, father of two from the semi-rural town of Lebowakgomo in the northeast. The group breaks into a song to encourage two firefighters as they begin to climb a combat wall. Others practice rapidly coiling the fire hose back up, or run carrying twenty-kilogramme bags of equipment. The lyrics, accompanied by synchronised steps by the team all dressed in blue-and-yellow, builds the team’s “morale” and “creates motivation”, Sewetsi said. Singing “brings the team t together,” despite their different languages and backgrounds and helps them remember that “it doesn’t matter if it’s hard, we will do it,” he explained. Despite South Africa entering its own fire season which starts around mid-June and battling a crippling energy crisis, van de Merwe said the deployment was “important” and “will be good exposure for our firefighters”

He said Ogiasa was abducted from his community, Otuabagi, in the Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Thursday, June 2, adding that efforts were being made to rescue him. A source said Ogiasa had just finished a meeting in the community when gunmen numbering eight invaded his house just as he arrived from the meeting and whisked him away. However close to 48 hours after his kidnap and no word from his abductors the family had to report the incident to the Police for investigation and possibly his rescue. “He had actually planned to return to Yenagoa at the end of the meeting but some people prevailed on him to wait till the next morning. He was indoors when the gunmen arrived and abducted him,” the source added.

Andy Robertson has played in three Champions League finals for Liverpool, winning just one The organisation of the Champions League final at the Stade de France in Paris was a "shambles", according to Liverpool defender Andy Robertson. Uefa delayed kick-off by more than half an hour for "security reasons", adding the problem was thousands of fans trying to get in with fake tickets. Robertson says he had given a ticket to a friend but he was denied entry for the game which Real Madrid won 1-0. "One of my mates got told it was a fake which I assure you it wasn't," he said. "It was a shambles really," the Scot told BBC Sport. Pictures emerged of a huge amount of Liverpool fans in long queues outside the stadium. The big screen in the ground said the game was delayed because of "the late arrival of fans" but some claimed they had been at the stadium hours before kick-off. Police outside the ground fired tear gas as a small number of supporters tried to climb over security barriers. 'A miserable night on every level imaginable' Liverpool will come again after final loss - Klopp Liverpool have called for an investigation into the "unacceptable issues" faced by fans - with some not making it into the ground until the second half. Robertson added: "To be honest people were just making it up at times and panicking. Tear gas getting thrown at people was unacceptable. "It was horrendous for our fans and all families that have been through it as well. It wasn't a nice experience, not a nice final to come to. The Champions League should be a celebration but it wasn't that. "Obviously the final wasn't meant to be here and whether the preparations were not as good as maybe they should have been but I am sure in the coming days an inquest will go into that."

Real Madrid were crowned Champions of Europe for the 14th time after beating Liverpool 1-0 at the Stade de France. An eighth successive UEFA Champions League (UCL) final victory means the Spaniards have won Europe’s premier competition twice as many times as any other club. While the atmosphere was reaching fever pitch inside the stadium, a scene of carnage was developing outside, as a huge number of fans struggled to gain entry into the stadium. The subsequent 37-minute delay to kick-off did little to stifle the ‘Reds’ though, as they took complete control of the match, aiming to gain revenge for defeat in this fixture in the 2018 final. Carlo Ancelotti’s men have been the masters of survival in this UCL run, and those skills were being put to the test as the Liverpool barrage intensified, with both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané testing Thibaut Courtois early on. The Senegal international had his side’s best opening, as he brilliantly evaded the challenge of Eder Militão before firing at goal, only for Courtois to tip his effort against the post. Real had to wait until the brink of HT to find an opening at the other end. Unsurprisingly, it was Karim Benzema at the heart of the action, as he ran in behind before making a mess of his shot, only for the ball to rebound off Fabinho, back to the Frenchman to slot home. Controversially, the goal was ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR review, but the scare provided a timely reminder of the threat that the Spanish champions possess. ‘Los Blancos’ began to grow into the game after the break, with the energy of Federico Valverde causing problems on the right. After withstanding the first-half onslaught, it would be Real to open the scoring on the hour mark. Valverde’s driven cross caught Trent Alexander-Arnold napping at the far post, allowing Vinícius Júnior to tap-in from point-blank range. The Brazilian’s 22nd goal of the season put his side in unfamiliar territory, defending a lead in the closing stages rather than chasing another miraculous comeback. Liverpool are no strangers to mounting fightbacks on big European nights, and they needed all of their experience to break down a stubborn Real rearguard. Salah had been starved of service since HT, but he remained capable of magical moments, as he cut inside from the right before curling a shot towards the far corner, only for Courtois to meet it with a strong hand to beat it away. Salah appeared determined to make an impact after injury ended his last meeting with Real, but Courtois stood firm, making another remarkable save to deny the Egyptian late on. Despite their best efforts, Liverpool were unable to find a way through, falling at the final UCL hurdle for the second time in five years to the same opponent. A fourth European crown as a manager for Ancelotti is an all-time record, overseeing one of the great UCL campaigns. Seeing off Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and Liverpool on the way, Real earned their third trophy of an historic season.

Manchester United footballer and MBE recipient Marcus Rashford is now set to marry his childhood sweetheart after proposing while on a postseason getaway in California. The Premier League striker got down on one knee for long-time girlfriend Lucia Loi yesterday, less than a week after United ended their season in defeat to Crystal Palace. The pair, both aged 24, have been dating since the age of 15 when they were pupils at Ashton on Mersey school in Greater Manchester. Rashford had been planning the proposal for weeks and popped the question to Lucia at a lavish villa after they shared a romantic meal at celebrity seafood restaurant Catch LA, a source told The Sun. ‘They went out in LA for a romantic night together on Tuesday and he proposed. It was extremely romantic. ‘They celebrated afterwards with a group of close friends — including his United teammate Jesse Lingard,’ the source said. Rashford shared news of the engagement on Instagram, posting an image of the pair embracing as they stood atop a bed of white roses in front of a heart-shaped archway. Another source said: ‘All involved are thrilled at the recent news of the engagement,’ and spoke of Lucia’s influence on the Premier League star, who has received plaudits for his charitable work off the field but has struggled to perform on it since having shoulder surgery. ‘Lucia has been a big part of Marcus’ life… offering stability, a sense of belonging and assurance that can be rare to find,’ the source told The Sun. The high school sweethearts had been together for eight years when difficulties associated with the Covid pandemic triggered a split. But the pair confirmed they had reunited in January of this year. News of the engagement comes just days after Rashford claimed the book of the year prize at the British Book Awards for his non-fiction debut.

I told him even if you force me to date you, hope you know you cannot force me to marry you. It is better we have a broken relationship now than a broken marriage. I can’t please. I cannot die. Unknown to many, the insecurity in the southeast is not caused just by the Indigenous People of Biafra There appear to be other groups perpetrating unrest in the region according to a recent detailed report on the insecurity in the southeast Security experts say many southeast states are still paying the price as evidenced by the new level of strange and audacious criminality in the region. A report by the New Telegraph newspaper has revealed that the unknown gunmen terrorising the southeast region are known as the Fallen Angels or Auto Pilot group. According to the report, the group is made up of dissidents in the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The report named Finland-based Simon Ekpa as the man behind the unknown gunmen terrorising the southeast. “In closed circles, they call them ‘the Fallen Angels’ and in more common parlance, they are known as ‘the Auto-Pilot group’. “The name ‘Fallen Angels’ came up in the course of investigations to figure out the real identity of the group defying the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu and undermining the command and control structure of IPOB while claiming to fight for the release of Kanu and emancipation of the Igbo nation.” The report noted that the Fallen Angels are largely made up of former members of IPOB – some expelled members, some disgruntled members, and others who could not endure the discipline (and sometimes, highhandedness) embodied in the command and control structure of IPOB. Also among this group are a few others co-opted into the dissident group from external groups and gangs whose interests are not defined. A source quoted in the report said: “Most of these men are largely loyal to themselves or whatever they find convenient.“It is the Fallen Angels and some other small splinter groups within the IPOB family that are fast being rolled into one violent body under the Auto-Pilot group. The Auto-Pilot group has a known leader in the person of Simon Ekpa. “While claiming that their loyalty is to Nnamdi Kanu alone and that their struggle is to free him from incarceration, the Auto-Pilot group has repeatedly defied and denounced the leadership of the Directorate of State, the highest governing body in IPOB set up by Nnamdi Kanu himself.”
