The Muslims did not protest when Christians were appointed to lead universities and major institutions in predominantly Muslim areas of Northern Nigeria. So why are some Berom Christian youths and women protesting over the appointment of Professor Abdullahi Ahmed to head the Federal College of Animal Health and Production Technology in Vom, Plateau State?

If competence, qualification and experience are the criteria for public appointments, then religion should have no place in determining who is qualified to serve.

Consider the history.

Below are examples of Christians who have served as Vice-Chancellors of universities located in predominantly Muslim-majority states:

* Prof. Ishaya Audu — A Christian and pastor who served as Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He was respected and supported in that position, and there was no mass protest against his appointment on the basis of his religion.

* Prof. James O. C. Ezeilo — An Igbo Christian who served as Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano (BUK). His appointment did not result in Muslim youths or women taking to the streets to demand his removal because he was a Christian or because he was not Hausa-Fulani.

* Prof. Essien Udom — Pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri. His appointment as the founding Vice-Chancellor did not trigger religious protests from Muslims.

* Prof. A. O. Adekola — Pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi. Again, there was no mass mobilisation by Muslims demanding that he be removed simply because he was a Christian.

* Prof. Andrew Haruna — A Christian, non-indigene who became Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Gashua, Yobe State.

* Professor James Ayatse — A Tiv Christian, now the Tor Tiv, the Paramount Ruler of the Tiv, who was the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Dutsinma, Katsina State.

The question is: Why the double standard?

Muslim youths and women did not come out on the streets to protest when Christians were appointed to lead major institutions in Muslim-majority parts of Northern Nigeria.

Muslims did not argue that Christian appointees were unacceptable because they were not Hausa-Fulani or because they came from another part of the country.

Yet today, the appointment of a Muslim professor to head an institution in Plateau State is being presented by some protesters as if his religion alone makes him unqualified.

Professor Abdullahi Ahmed should be judged by his competence, qualifications, integrity and ability to perform the responsibilities of his office—not by whether he is a Muslim or a Christian.

A professor with the knowledge and expertise to serve the institution can contribute to the development of Christians, Muslims, traditionalists and people of other beliefs alike.

The bigger concern is the growing tendency to turn every appointment into an ethnic or religious confrontation.

We saw opposition to President Muhammadu Buhari, and we are now witnessing similar framing of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through religious and ethnic lenses, despite the fact that the President's wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is a Christian and a pastor.

If we truly want peace and harmonious coexistence in Nigeria, we must reject the idea that government positions and public institutions belong exclusively to one religion or ethnic group.

No Nigerian should be denied an opportunity because of his or her faith.

Federal institutions belong to Nigerians. Public appointments should be based on competence, qualification, experience and integrity—not religion or ethnicity.
