Hello, weldone everyone. Please, I’m in a dilemma and I need honest opinions.

About two years ago, I met a lady at NYSC camp. We fell in love and started dating. Everything was going well, and we genuinely loved each other.

About four months into the relationship, she travelled home for Christmas and came back telling me that her mother wanted her to marry someone who had shown interest in her. She said she had already told the man, his family and even her mother that she wasn’t interested, and assured me that she wouldn’t leave me for anyone.

The pressure from her family continued throughout our relationship. After NYSC, she went back home, and eventually the pressure became too much. She told me she had decided to go ahead with the marriage. At the time, I had just finished NYSC and wasn't financially ready to start a family, while she was approaching 30 and wanted to get married before then. I loved her, but I couldn't provide the financial security she wanted, so I let her go.

Later, I discovered that the man she was marrying was actually her ex. I was disappointed that she had hidden that from me. She also told me that pastors had said she and the man were spiritually compatible, while she and I weren't. I told her that marriage requires more than spiritual compatibility; both people have to be intentional and willing to put in the work. She didn't agree, so I let her make her decision.

Her bride price was eventually paid. She later told me that if I could somehow raise money for her bride price and a proper wedding, she would leave the man. Because I still loved her, I put a lot of pressure on myself and my business trying to make it happen, but I eventually had to admit that I couldn't afford it.

Since then, we've had an on-and-off relationship as friends. Sometimes we wouldn't speak for months, then she would reach out and we'd reconcile. We've only communicated online since the marriage process began.

I know I wasn't financially ready for marriage after NYSC, but I also believe we could have built together. During NYSC, I took care of our feeding and still gave her a monthly allowance from the money I was making from online gigs. I wasn't lazy; I simply wanted to build my life through legitimate means and refused to do fraud just to make money quickly.

So, I don't necessarily blame her for choosing financial security. I was disappointed, but I accepted her decision.

Now, recently, she reached out and told me she's tired of the marriage and wants to leave. She said that if I'm still available when everything is finally over, she'd like us to continue from where we stopped or start afresh.

The problem is that I still love her, but I don't know if I can trust her the way I used to.

There are also things I noticed during our relationship that I was willing to tolerate because I believed tolerance is important in relationships. She gets angry easily, sometimes gives silent treatment for days until there's a lot of begging, and has insulted me when she's upset. I never insulted her or raised my voice at her because I adored her so much.

Now I'm asking myself: if she eventually leaves the marriage and comes back, can I genuinely build a marriage with her again?

I don't have anyone else in my life at the moment, and a part of me still wants her. Another part of me feels that too much has happened and that the trust we once had may never return.

I also worry about the fact that she is currently married. Even if she eventually leaves, would I be making the right decision by going back to someone who once chose another man over me and is now returning because she's unhappy?

I believe love is important, but love alone isn't enough to sustain a marriage. Trust, respect, communication, emotional maturity and willingness to work through problems matter too.

What would you honestly do if you were in my position? Would you consider taking her back and starting over, or would you let the relationship go completely?

The issue of surname is a complex one. It's very wrong of the OP to solely attribute it to westernization. Some people believe the name of their ancestors had something to do with idol worshipping, etc Ogunjayi, Sangodele, Oyatomi, Esubiyi, etc. Hence, the need to change it in accordance to their new faith.

For some, they may think the name is cursed and can only bring them misfortune. I once had a colleague who said he'll change the surname of his kids (to his own name) because it seems his own surname is cursed.

For some, the surname isn't just befitting. Like it sounds weird and embarrases the bearer each time they get called by it. e.g I knew someone whose surname was AJANLEKOKO (which roughly translates to- a dog is chasing a hyena). Like how the hell is that a name? The guy is always embarrassed whenever we call him by it.

In Cross River State where I served, their surname is their grandfather's name, their first name is theirs and their middle name is their father's. Upon investigation, I learnt they bear it that way for the purpose of geneaology.


I told them that here in South West, our middle name is just another name we bear to differentiate us from other people who may likely bear the same name as us. In my wife's family for example, about 5 of them bear the same name.

For my own family, our surname was my great-grandfather's name. He was an idol worshipper in his time. About 10 years ago, my dad sought to change our surname to his own name. Being an Alfa, he doesn't want his name to be associated with idolatory. Some of my siblings agreed while a few of us disagreed. To me, bearing a name that dates back to 4 generations is prestigious and shows a deep family ancestry/geneaology. Ain't gonna change that! Moreover, I don't want my children to have any Islamic name in their credentials (talkless of bearing it as a surname), bearing pure Yoruba names is enough. The Arabs should stay in their lane!

I for example, I don't have any Islamic name in my certificate (even though I'm one). All my names are Yoruba names. I don't like how religion erodes some people's cultural identity. Besides, my surname sounds just great, whenever I get called by it, it feels just right.

So, in conclusion, people change their surname for many reasons. It has little to do with westernization.

Hello house, I am a father of three children and I mistakenly got my wife pregnant again which I don't want and I've told her to let get rid of it because the pregnancy is just two weeks old and it is yet to form but she insisted that she's going to born it.
