Before jumping into conclusions. Have you thought of the following;:

1. Cost of rent for a shop in Lagos markets?
2. Cost of tickets, levies and all sorts of taxes imposed on many markets by both the local and state governments?
3. Cost of clearing at the ports?
4. Exchange rates?
5. Cost of moving your products from the ports to your stores? I don’t think there’s a single market in Lagos state that you don’t have area boys demanding money from trucks, containers and individuals moving goods on the roads.
6. Interest rates on loans.

The Chinese on the other hand doesn’t have to battle all these and even if they do, they didn’t come with Naira to your country, they came with dollars a more stable and currency with higher purchasing value when compared to the Naira. Coupled with the fact that they have single digit loans and strong institutional supports from their governments.

No Nigerian business (SMEs, wholesaler) can compete with the Chinese in this venture, they have deeper pockets and can make profits with just a little margin.

A local reseller that sells an item he bought from China for 1000 Naira at 2500 Naira must have factored in all the costs I listed above and his profit may be just 300 or 500 Naira. The Chinese can decide to sell at 1800 Naira and maintain a margin of 300 Naira but he may have larger volume and his turnover would be better than the Nigerian SME that has just an inventory of 100 items.

Distributors and retailers are very greedy. My friend bought an industrial VFD from China for 150K, the biggest industrial shop seller in Jos was charitable 400k as last price. I personally went to buy industrial solar lights ,I contacted a Chinese company rep in Benin Republic, he told me about the new model which is more efficient. Gave me his supply details in lagos. Meanwhile, suppliers in Jos were screaming nothing like new model . Lagos company plug connected me where I got new model cheaper than old model .

Government has the business of protecting the interests of the citizens. The Asians do that too.

Trade fair is a retail market area, where over 90% of the goods traded there are imported into the country. The Asians who have very solid industries, secure visas to visit Nigeria, reside in Nigeria, import from their industries to physically sell in the retail markets. I don’t see that as fair to Nigerian traders who import from the same Asian manufacturers at high prices, only to find the same Asian manufacturers competing with them in their retail markets. That the reason for imposing tariffs by Donald Trump to check make the excesses of the Chinese. Take off the unfair practices and provide jobs for his people first.,

My former Asian manufacturer at some points repeatedly also asked me about the possibility of agreeing with him to manufacture here in Lagos, the same product that I used to import from his factory. When I discussed partnership with him in his country to set up a factory for a particular item that he used to act as a middle man to get for me, he gave me a hugely inflated set up cost that put me off.

I think manufacturing in lagos would have been cheaper 🤔.
