Agriculture / Re: The Future Of African Agriculture by grabben: 4:35am On May 08, 2018
Lesgupnigeria:
Africa has enormous resources which unfortunately are not maximally utilised.
Not to talk of the massive arable land, labours, knowledgeable and hard working workforce,we still remain a net food importer instead of being the food powerhouse of the world.

Nevertheless the future is bright for agriculture in Africa except we take advantage of the resources at our disposal,
If we don't then it might take longer years to reach the goal of seeing africa become the food powerhouse of the continents.

Netherlands who does not have up to half of the our resources produce the healthiest, cheapest food products anywhere in the world. Why is africa so backward on the world food map?

I also kept asking myself but thankfully there are practical solutions to all of our challenges.
I remember telling a friend many years ago to venture with me into the world of agriculture but was not convince enough that agriculture is going to be the mainstay in the Nigeria economy, he wanted to have his hands on the oil and gas pie since it was the mainstay of the economy then.

Now agriculture is at the front burner everybody want to have a pie.
To push forward in the agricultural sector on this continent, we need to make drastic steps into.

1. Empowering the small scale farmers to produce more from their relatively small portion.
Africa small scale farmers produce up to 70% of the food we consume and it will be insane not to see them as a major stakeholder in the africa agribusiness industry. Inputs, high yielding seeds/seedling,etc are to be provided.

2. Incorporating technology to improve efficiency along the food supply chain.
Lack of infrastructure, poor road network, lack of market structure are some of the challenges being by the players along the value chain.
These challenges must be addressed and it must be addressed urgently leveraging on technology. Failure to do so, the future of africa agriculture might go dimmer and dimmer.

What steps do you think stakeholders in the agribusiness industry must take to secure the future of African agriculture?
We have always stated it unequivocally that the future of agriculture in Africa is the exportation of agricultural products. In fact, this is the major dividend of agricultural practice. The earlier farmers think about agro-export, the better for them. Click on the first link on my signature for details.

Agriculture / Re: Agriculture, The Untapped Panacea To Our Nigeria's Economic Issue. by grabben: 3:38pm On May 07, 2018
AJCs:
It is said that a river that forgets its source must surely dry, so as a nation whose initial and advent of her source of revenue (Agriculture) shall pay dearly for it when overdependent on non Agricultural sources aren't functioning.
Agriculture in Nigeria was our major source of income during the pre discovery of oil period but this God's given job was neglected which was characterized by discovery of oil boom in '70s. This mega rich source of income, however, dint only prompt the neglect of Agriculture but also killed the desire of agric enthusiasts as all focus was literarily shifted to oil discovery with its mega income by Nigerian govt not been mindful the effects of oil if dries up or the further income the mega rich Agriculture sector could generate to the nation's pulse.
As oil price globally in few years dropped, and recently rose (a little bit), I think it is advisable for everybody interested in farming for both subsistence and economic benefits to take the bull by the horn as govt isn't ready to give needed attention to that sector which is still being hindered by their belief on oil.
For me, I have ventured into it by starting with plantain as most people in our farm settlement area (Ago Owu/Alaguntan/Alipanu @Osunstate) being surrounded with only specialize in plantain and cocoa.
Check the pics of my farm.

In line with our vision of achieving a Nigeria sufficient in Food production and rich in agricultural produce exports, Agro News Nigeria held a Farmers Townhall in Gumel, Jigawa state on Tuesday, 17th April, 2018 at the Gumel Emirate Foundation.

The event was organized to reach out to sesame and bambara nut farmers in Gumel and its environs on the market potential of sesame and bambara nut, the GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) of these crops and to unveil the company’s Farmers Empower Initiative – an avenue for Agro News Nigeria to provide Sesame and Bambara nut Farmers extension services, access to credit and access to market.

This event was graced by the Director of Jigawa state Agricultural and Rural Development Authoriy (JARDA), representative of Jigawa State Investment Promotion Agency, the Emirate council and 200 sesame and bambara farmers from Gumel, Gagarawa, Sule tankarkar, and Maigatari LGA.

The farmers in attendance used this opportunity to narrate the challenges they are often faced with. In line with Agro News Nigerian’s interventions, the farmers acknowledged that the challenges they face include;

- Lack of access to market
- Unavailability/ delay in the supply of seeds and agrochemicals by previous contractors or government agencies
- Low yield of bambara nut and
- High cost of fertilizer

They were also willing to become members of Agro News Nigeria’s Farmers Empower Initiative as a step towards finding lasting solutions to the challenges they presently face knowing that the company offers them free extension services, access to market and a possibility of an access to agricultural inputs

Agro News Nigeria is currently working with Sesame and Bambara nut farmers in Jigawa state to improve yield and also improve farmers' access to the market.

The 100 hectare Agro News Nigeria's sesame and bambara nut farms in Gumel is a model farm for sesame and bambara nut farming.
