As a school secretary or administrator, it would be your job to provide administrative support in a school. If you are organised and have good office skills, and would like to work in an educational environment, this job could be perfect for you. In this job you would need good spoken and written communication skills. When working under pressure you would have to stay organised and prioritise your tasks. To get into this job you must have knowledge of main computer software packages. Your typical duties would include: •Answering the phone and passing on messages greeting visitors at reception and issuing name badges •Typing letters, reports and other documents dealing with incoming and outgoing post and emails printing and photocopying •keeping clerical and computerised records of pupils and staff producing statistical returns and reports dealing with school meals administration •Ordering equipment and stationery paying invoices and banking cash •Being responsible for first aid and the sick room. •You would come into contact with a wide range of people including teachers, pupils, parents and carers, education welfare officers, social workers and school governors. Income Salaries for full-time teaching assistants range from 50,000-70,000naira monthly Qualification Minimum of HND/B.sc in any relevant field of study but degree in secretariat studies is an added advantage Skills, interests and qualities To be a school secretary you should have: •Good spoken and written communication skills •Confident telephone manner •An organised and methodical approach to work •Good administrative skills, computer skills including use of wordprocessing, spreadsheet and presentation software •The ability to work under pressure and prioritise tasks confidence in handling cash and working with figures •The ability to work well with pupils, teachers and parents/guardians respect for confidential information •Be patient and flexible •The ability to work as part of a team and also on your own initiative. Teaching assistants support children with their learning activities in the classroom. They work closely with teachers to make sure students enjoy learning in a safe and caring setting. You'll also need good literacy and numeracy skills, as well as creative ideas for activities. To do this job, you will usually need some experience of working with children. You may be able to start as a trainee. Work activities As a teaching assistant you would support teachers and help students with their educational and social development, both in and out of the classroom.
