Prior to the 1960 independence, these same Igbos denied and opposed the inclusion of the rights to secede from being included in the constitution. So they cannot go because it is unconstitutional due to their actions prior to 1960.

It was the Northerners who reneged, it didn't matter because it was the Igbos who planned the coup that killed Northern leaders. They should have agreed though to sustain peace.
