No sane football follower goes into every match with “we’ll just outscore them” as the default tactical plan. Outscoring your opponent becomes necessary when you find yourself behind, perhaps because of an unexpected mistake or circumstance. It is not supposed to be the foundation of your game plan every matchday.

You don’t build a football team around the assumption that your defence will make blunders and your attack will simply bail you out every time. That’s madness.

This is football, not hockey or basketball.
