CelebritiesKalu Ikeagwu Opens Up On How And Why Nigeria Police Arrogantly Arrested Him by Grovebase(op): 1:20pm On Sep 28, 2016
The story of his arrest of alleged armed robbery incident trended online yesterday. Nollywood actor Kalu Ikeagwu, in this encounter with Sahara Weekly, narrated the ordeal he and his family went through in the hands of the Nigerian police force. His words:

“On 26th of September 2016, at about 3:40pm my daughter had just been dropped off at home by her official school bus while I opened the gate for her to come into the house, two men accosted and ordered that I should follow them, then I asked them who they are, instead they flashed an Identity card that I only showed police written on it without any name.

Meanwhile, these two men were in plain clothes and one of them had a black looped earring.

At this point, I said I was not going to follow them since I do not know who they are. Suddenly a white unmarked bus pulled–up in front of me and four more men on plain clothes appeared from the bus with one pointing an AK47 raffle at my fore head…”

Sensing danger, the actor smartly dialled his wife’s phone number but the men began struggling his phone from him, before they took the phone from him he was able to tell his wife that, “some men purported to be police officers are taking me away…”
“The men over powered and handcuffed him while they drove to Pen-cinema Police station Agege, Lagos. They drove passed area G Police Station Ogba which is closer to Kalu’s residence. Arriving at Pen-cinema Police station, they held him outside the gate; until a man appeared wearing a black long coat who simply identified himself as Born Great Benin.

“I said to him I cannot answer any question from you, unless I am taken into the police station proper, it was this Born Great Benin that later ordered them to take off the cuffs and asked them to bundled me into the bus again and they drove off to somewhere I later identified as area F, police station Ikeja. At this area F rather than take me into the station’s main building, I was held at a room when a certain gentle man identified as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Philips came in and showed me a telephone number and asked if I knew the owner of the number…”
Instantly, Ikeagwu identified the owner of the number as his friend who had picked him up from the airport a few days earlier. Ikeagwu inquired from his friend if he had bought a phone recently and his friend said yes and narrated how he had swapped his old phone (ipone6) for a new one (Iphone7) at the popular computer village Ikeja, Lagos Nigeria and paid an extra N37.000 in a legal business transaction with a phone dealer. “That was when they explained to me that since I was the last person that dialled my friend’s phone number it made me a soft target – hence my arrest.”

Ikeagwu’s friend who had travelled has since returned to Lagos. At the time of publishing this story he is a free man while his friend in company of a lawyer are working with the Nigerian Police Force to identify the phone dealer.

Asked what this experience has done to his family and his personal feelings towards the Nigerian Police, the actor had this to say:

“first I will talk about my wife, she is still in fear even till this moment she even stopped me from jugging this morning. I thank God at the way she handled the situation, the situation has made me remember I have a gift in her. For me, it only reminded me of what a movie director in Enugu told me, he said, he can forgive a man that takes away his wife, or a man that stabs him so long as he did not die, but can never lift a finger to help a dying police man. In my life I have never had dealings with the police but it’s unfortunate the way this episode ended. Because their actions are an embarrassment to Nigeria’s image, the first skill of every intelligent police officer is his understanding of psychology but instead they chose to do otherwise”.

CrimeArmy Dismisses Claims Of Boko Haram Hoisting Flag In Nigeria by Grovebase(op): 12:48pm On Sep 28, 2016
The Nigerian army has denied report that Boko Haram terrorists hoisted flags in some villages in Borno state. Reports surfaced on Monday that some armed gunmen believed to be Boko Haram members attacked Kuburvwa village in Borno state.

It was alleged that the gunmen invaded the village around 6.30pm and started shooting sporadically, causing the locals to take refuge in the bushes around them.

Sources say the terrorist took over some villages and hoisted their flags as a mark of victory.

But a statement by Col Kukasheka Usman, who is the spokesperson of the army, said although there was a gun fight between troops and terrorists, there was no hoisting of flag.

Read the full statement below:
Yesterday, at about 5.00pm suspected elements of Boko Haram terrorists, scavenging for food, attacked Kwang village and Vigilantes from Dagu (which is about 4 kilometres from Kwang), responded and repelled the terrorists attack.

During the fire fight that ensued, one of the vigilantes sustained gun shot wound on his hand and was evacuated to General Hospital Uba while the terrorists fled with gun shot wounds.

Troops were eventually despatched to the area with clear orders to pursue and deal with the terrorists. They are still exploiting.

Similarly, same day, at about 4.35pm some suspected remnants of Boko Haram terrorists attacked Boftari which is about 15 kilometres from Chibok town.

On receipt of the information, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE stationed in Forward Operation Base Chibok, mobilized to the area.

The troops encountered Boko Haram terrorists ambush site shortly before Kuburmbula village. They quickly cleared the ambush and proceeded to Boftari.

Unfortunately, the terrorists had set some houses on fire and fled. The troops put out the fire and are currently on the hunt for the terrorists.

It is imperative to state that contrary to rumours flying around some media reports, no life was lost.

Additionally, there is no presence of the terrorists in any of the villages talk less of hoisting flags as alleged.

The troops have continued to maintain high level of vigilance.

The Nigerian entertainment industry is growing at an unstoppable rate. We unarguably have the best talents in the whole of Africa; limiting us to the shores of Nigeria is a disservice. In no time, our entertainers will start earning as much as – if not more than – their counterparts in developed countries. At least, that’s the dream and it’s work in progress. In the nearest future, we will hear Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Genevieve Nnaji, Richard Mofe-Damijo and the likes gulp billions of nairas each year.

It’s funny how we don’t even get to know how much these entertainers earn every year from movie roles. We deserve to know; we’re the fans after all.

Is it not all possible to have platforms created to provide us with reliable data, not speculations, on how much each artiste earns in a year? Well, that’s something I would like to write about some other time.
Nollywood and the music industry have grown together in the last couple of years like Siamese twins. We have recorded more movie exports than all the African countries put together. Our music acts have become the most-sought-after for collaborations here and there. Concerts in most African countries cannot be said to be enjoyed without a Nigerian act in attendance, more often than not as the headline artiste.

Every single day, new acts are cropping up with ‘gbedu wey dey burst brain’ (irresistible beats) being produced by equally talented producers and lasers. The contributions of Nollywood and our music industry (how come no one has come up with a befitting nomenclature for the music industry?) to Nigeria’s GDP are indeed commendable. By 2019, the industry is estimated to have the potential to gross in US$8.1 billion. If only the government could provide additional support to tackle some of the recurring challenges in the sector, more revenue can be squeezed out and our economy will stand at a vantage position.
Worthy of note is our creative arts industry. The illustrators, artists, designers, cartoonists and so on. For the purpose of this article, I will refer to them as second-level entertainers. No intention to derogate or minimize their arts. In fact, I appreciate all kinds of creative works. This category of professionals are also entertainers. They entertain us with their respective works of arts. And truly, Nigerians have an impeccable hunger for these creative outputs. It’s a bit shocking why these second-level entertainers do not get as much recognition as their counterparts. While I understand there is an urgent need to promote these kind of arts, it’s also important for the players to carry one another along by way of lending helping hands and more importantly through word of mouth.

If our entertainment industry wields such an enviable influence and it’s at the heart of everything in Africa, then we need to saddle the players in the industry with weightier responsibilities. After all, to whom much is given, much is expected. Besides, the task of growing our economy is a collective responsibility because either directly or indirectly, we all milk from the economy. And at the moment, the cow has grown surprisingly lean, with barely enough milk.

Whose fault is it that we’ve fed the cow with just grass? Whose fault is it that now that the pasture isn’t as green as it used to, the cow can’t even feed well, talk less of generating enough milk for others to consume? The cow shall regain its weight. Its nutrients shall return. There shall soon be milk for all, enough to go round. But only when it starts to consume a lot more than just grass. Thankfully, all hands are on deck to ensure this anticipated lot befalls the cow.
More than anyone else, our entertainers have a lot to do to attract more people to our tourist sites. These sites have enormous potentials to generate more revenue than the current statistics indicate. Our entertainers are like our mirrors to the world. Granted, they have done well in portraying to the entire world the diversity in our cultures, lifestyles and ethnicity. Through our films and music videos, the world now knows us well now.

What about promoting our tourist sites through these means? How about taking deliberate measures to shoot some of their music videos at these sites? It’s not every time we should be portraying sex appeals, let’s incorporate the storyline to include the promotion of our numerous tourist sites. Let me put this in proper context: an average music video from any of our tier A artistes, such as Olamide, Davido, Yemi Alade, Omawunmi, Waje will get over a million YouTube views from across the world. Imagine if such a video was shot in any of these tourist sites! Over a million people worldwide will see and appreciate what we have and probably decide to visit!
Docudramas can also be very instrumental. Nollywood scripts should start accommodating the inclusion of these sites into its production. In addition to using the sites as set locations, storylines should also be developed within this line. No doubt, I understand the financial restraint this might pose. It is especially important for movie producers to seek for partnerships with government agencies. I do not think the Mbanefo-led Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC) will refrain from supporting any work of art that seeks to promote tourism in Nigeria. I think our movie producers also need to get creative about sourcing for funds.

There are a number of private organisations that are willing to put their money down to support such projects. Those who can’t commit to the project with funds can provide non-monetary supports such as manpower development (directing), free hotel rooms for the cast & crew, provision of state-of-the-art equipment and many more.
The role of government in making this recommendation witness the first sun cannot be over emphasized. An enabling environment has to be created and maintained. Access to funds, grants and loans needs to be improved. Government needs to facilitate or subsidize access to international trainings. I still believe there are a lot we can achieve with public-private partnerships. Much to our surprise, the abandoned stone might eventually become our cornerstone.

CelebritiesHow Emmanuella Joined Mark Angel Comedy – Read Emmanuella & Mark Angel Latest In by Grovebase(op): 3:48pm On Sep 23, 2016
Mark Angel and Emmanuella are hilarious duo making waves in the entertainment industry.

The young, online comedians open up to TS Weekend about their career, challenges and future expectations.

Could you tell us your names?
Emmanuella: My name is Samuel Emmanuella
Mark: My name is Mark Angel. That is my real name, not just a stage name even though I used to bear Ebere. Mark Angel is my real name.

Okay, Mark Angel, tell us about your family background?
Mark: The background of my family is bush, bush, bush…

How do you mean?
Mark: I grew up in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. I come from a small family of three kids, with my parents.

How did you start up in the entertainment industry?
Mark: I dropped out of school and went to learn photography.

Why did you drop out?
Mark: I dropped out due to financial issues, and moreover, I didn’t want to study Medicine because my aunt wanted me to be a medical doctor. So, I left for photography, and from there, I went into Nollywood business, working as an MC at events. Soon, I started shooting movies with Denilson Igwe. That was how we started.

How did Emmanuella come into the scene?
Mark: Emmanuella happened to be one of the kids I was always with. There was this day we wanted to do a comedy which would require kids. So, we thought of using kids and it wasn’t playing out well. We were trying to play Mr Bee’s characters because I used to act as a clown at events. One day, we were rehearsing for a stage drama when Emmanuella, who usually came around to watch and sometimes joined in the voice training for laughter, suddenly picked interest. Someone was acting and she (Emmanuella) said she could do it. It was like she could do it better and we allowed her to do it, and when she did it, we saw that she is good and only needed training, but then, she was still very small.

How old are you Emmanuella?
Emmanuella: I am six-years-old.

Can you tell us why you like acting?
Emmanuella: I like to make people laugh and make them forget their sorrows.

Has there ever been a time someone came to you and talked about what you are doing?
Emmanuella: Yes, there was this day my friend in school told me that she likes the way I act. Her name is Love. I felt happy when she told me that.

How have you been coping with school and comedy? Is acting not affecting your studies?
Emmanuella: It is not affecting my studies. I try to cope and I am doing well in both.

What do you want to be in future?
Emmanuella: I want to be an actress and also a fashion designer.

How was the experience when you had your first stand-up comedy?
Emmanuella: I felt excited and happy. I wasn’t shy because that is not possible. I can never be shy.

How are your siblings?
Emmanuella: They are doing fine.

What your position in the family?
Emmanuella: I am the last born of the family.

Since you dropped out of school, have you ever felt like going back?
Mark: I want to go back to school to study Business or anything related to security.

Now that we know your brand as skits, what should your fans expect from you in the nearest future?

Mark: It depends on what you want. Skits may stop for a while and we are working on our movie. Apart from that, there are so many things we have been doing. It is a happy industry.

Emmanuella, how did you feel when the Igbinedion family hosted you to an in-house party in Abuja?
Emmanuella: I felt very happy.

Do you hope to meet with President Buhari one day?
Emmanuella: Yes, I will be happy to meet him because I have been eager to talk to him to reduce the price of fuel.

You said you want to be an actress, who is your role model, I mean the actress you want to be like?
Emmanuella: I like aunty Mercy Johnson that acted Dumebi and aunty Chioma Chukwuka. I like the way they act.

In the comedy industry, who do you like most?
Emmanuella: I like uncle AY and uncle Basket Mouth.

What is your best subject in school?
Emmanuella: I like Mathematics and English.

Since you came to Lagos, what challenges have you been facing?
Mark: We are a brand coming from the digital background. It has not been easy digging into the industrial environment. It is the challenge of how to do a bigger production because we need money to get results. It has also been difficult convincing people to invest in us and have confidence in us. Another challenge is that, we usually stay in our house, make a no-budget video and send it on-air, and it gains acceptance. But now, we are moving to budget-based projects. You have to make the right connection and move from your house. We need money to do bigger productions. Even as I speak, Denilson is about to quit his job because the game has gone too far, and for him to devote more time.

Will it be right to quote you that you are broke and need sponsors?
Mark: Yes, we need sponsors, basically partnership. A lot of projects are just lying there wasting. It is hard to convince people.

When last did you see your mummy?
Emmanuella: A day to my birthday and that was July 21. I am missing her.

Tell us about one naughty thing you did that made your mummy beat you?
Emmanuella: Ask my uncle (Mark Angel). I can’t remember.

Mark: I can only tell the day I beat her. That was not too long ago. She poured popcorn all over the room, and I had warned her about that.

What is your overall assessment of the Nigerian entertainment industry?
Mark: It is growing too fast; so fast that if you are not awake, you will be left behind, and one morning, you’ll wake up and see that it is not beside you anymore. It is a proactive industry and so unpredictable that we have to always be at the edge and guide against being pushed off. Again, it is a competitive industry but we aren’t out to compete with anybody. We are just on our own line to make people happy and do our thing. They want us to dress as celebrities, come out of a big car, if not, they won’t talk to you. Anyway, we are learning.

What do you want to tell your fans?
Emmanuella: I want to say a big thank you for loving, watching me and also loving and accepting Mark Angel.

CelebritiesVeteran Nollywood Actress, Hilda Dokubo Has A Word For All Young African Ladies by Grovebase(op): 1:28pm On Sep 23, 2016
Veteran Nollywood actress, Hilda Dokubo has shared a piece of her mind on the best ways to manage marriages and relationships in general.

Based on the rate at which marriages break nowadays, the actress has noted that the best way to keep a home intact is by forgiveness, loving the home and self-love.

When asked if catching the man cheating was reason enough to walk out of the marriage, the veteran actress turned minister of God said in such a situation, the woman needs to forgive the man the same way God has been forgives daily for sins committed.

“You know I’m a Christian, I’m born again, and I’m a minister so no ground is good enough. The Bible charges a man to love his wife as God loves the church. God has not abandoned us because of our sins, even when He caught us red-handed. He still loves us; He’s still giving us the best of help,” she said.

According to Hilda said the only deal breaker in marriage is when it becomes severely abusive.
