Agriculture / Adamawa Govt To Boost Agric With Rice, Maize Production by grownaira: 4:04pm On Sep 22, 2016
Adamawa State Government has assured that it will support the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) Anchors Borrower’s Scheme to enhance farming of rice and maize in the state.

Governor Muhammad Umaru Jibrilla, who stated this when he received the team in his office Wednesday, said the state is known as the largest producer of rice in the country, a tempo which should be sustained. The governor, while reiterating government’s commitment towards the realisation of the scheme, explained that 80 percent of people of the state engage in farming of rice and maize.

He urged the commissioner for Agriculture in the state to take up the challenge of portraying the state as leader in the production of rice as well as work out modalities to ensure utilisation of the produce for the benefit of all.

Speaking earlier, leader of the group, Alhaji Mahmud Waziri, who is also the commissioner for Agriculture in the state, told the governor that initially more than one 100,000 farmers were registered on the scheme but only 28,000 farmers were returned by the regulating body as eligible to benefit from the scheme.

The commissioner explained that rice and maize have been selected as crop under the scheme while Bank of Agriculture has the mandate to disburse requirements from the CBN

He said one to five hectares of land is required for cultivation under the raining season, while those who have already planted crops aside the approved seed would be considered due to time loss.

Similarly, LEADERSHIP correspondent who visited the National Food Reserve Agency under the Federal Ministry Rural Development Strategies Grain Reserve Facility, along Ngurore road in Yola, Adamawa State, on fact finding mission, revealed that the grains reserve is yet to commence operation as the contractor handling the project, Crew Construction Company Limited, is yet to receive full payment from the federal government.

The reserve, with estimated capacity to store 25,000 metric tonnes of grain is under lock and key while only three staff were posted by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, waiting to commence operation.

Business / Dangote Plans To Buy Arsenal In Four Years by grownaira: 3:30pm On Sep 22, 2016
Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, plans to buy London-based Arsenal soccer team within four years.

Dangote, a Nigerian worth $10.9 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, announced his intention to buy the club last year. He said he needs to wait for his business prospects to improve and his investments in gas pipelines and an oil refinery to play out before making the acquisition.

“There’s no doubt” he’ll buy Arsenal and “it’s not a problem” of money, Dangote said in an interview with Bloomberg Television in New York on Wednesday. “Maybe three to four years. The issue is that we have more challenging headwinds. I need to get those out the way first and start having tailwinds. Then I’ll focus on this.”

Dangote, an Arsenal fan, has lost $4.4 billion this year, the fourth most of anyone globally, due mainly to the depreciation of Nigeria’s currency, the billionaires index shows. The bulk of his wealth is tied up in Lagos-based Dangote Cement Plc, whose stock is down 4.7 percent this year. An acquisition of the team would make him the first African owner of a team in England’s Premier League.

“It’s not about buying Arsenal and just continuing with business as usual,” he said. “It’s about buying Arsenal and turning it around. I’ve run a very successful business and I think I can also run a very successful team. Right now, with what we’re facing, over $20 billion of projects, I cannot do both.”

While Arsenal has won 13 top flight league titles in England, making it one of the country’s most successful sides, it’s last was in 2004.
Arsenal Holdings Plc, the owner, trades on the ICAP Securities & Derivatives Exchange, or ISDX, and has a market capitalization of 1 billion pounds ($1.3 billion).

Stan Kroenke, worth $7 billion and owner of the National Basketball Association’s Denver Nuggets, holds 67 percent of Arsenal Holdings, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Most English Premier League matches are broadcast live in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, by Supersport, a satellite television channel owned by South Africa’s Naspers Ltd

jaybee:

@NafeesaAA I hope you are sure of what you are saying that the entire rice farms in Kano and parts of Jigawa state are the supply base of this firm.
You should know that there are numerous small scale rice millers who have been in this business for long and they all source their paddy from the same markets. Also know that Dangote Rice mills too is competing for the same suppliers. I'm conversant with the rice value chain in Nigeria and I know the weakest link is the paddy supply. Do you know the tonnage required to keep these mills running optimally? I think @jmichlins have a valid point. I have seen smaller rice mills closed down for lack of paddy supply. I don't mean lack of money to pay the suppliers; they can't get the paddy to buy!

Dangote is fully into backward integration. He has his own rice farms (hundreds of thousands of hectares) that can efficiently feed his rice mill and wen probably sell the excess paddy. The wise dude started farming before even setting up the processing facilities.

An analysis into whether the Quran is more violent than the Bible found that killing and destruction occur more
frequently in the Christian texts than the Islamic.

Investigating whether the Quran really is more violent than its Judeo-Christian counterparts, software engineer Tom Anderson processed the text of the Holy books to find which contained the most violence.

In a blog post , Mr Anderson explains: "The project was inspired by the ongoing public debate around whether or not terrorism connected with Islamic fundamentalism reflects something inherently and distinctly violent about Islam compared to other major religions."

Using text analytics software he had developed, named Odin Text, he analysed both the New International Version of both the Old and New Testaments as well
as an English-language version of the Quran from 1957.

It took just two minutes for his software to read and analyse the three books.

By categorising words into eight emotions - Joy, Anticipation, Anger, Disgust, Sadness, Surprise, Fear/Anxiety and Trust - the analysis found the Bible scored
higher for anger and much lower for trust than the Quran.

Further analysis found the Old Testament was more violent than the New Testament, and more than twice as violent as the Quran.

Mr Anderson summarises : "Of the three texts, the content in the Old Testament appears to be the most violent. "Killing and destruction are referenced slightly more often in the New Testament (2.8%) than in the Quran (2.1%), but the Old Testament clearly leads-more than twice that of the Quran-in mentions of destruction and killing (5.3%)."

However, he adds: "First, I want to make very clear that we have not set out to prove or disprove that Islam is more violent than other religions.

"Moreover, we realize that the Old and New Testaments and the Quran are neither the only literature in Islam,
Christianity and Judaism, nor do they constitute the sum of these religions' teachings and protocols.

"I must also reemphasize that this analysis is superficial and the findings are by no means intended to be
conclusive. Ours is a 30,000-ft, cursory view of three texts: the Quran and the Old and New Testaments, respectively."
