Peter Obi donates N10m to varsity in Anambra

THE presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP in the February 25 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi on Thursday donated N10 million to Paul University, Awka owned by the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion.

He said that with the elections over, he would continue his philanthropic gestures to schools and hospitals, which had to be put on hold due to the political campaigns.

Obi said the intervention in schools and hospitals was part of his efforts to build human capital in Nigeria and improve infrastructure in such public institutions, recalling that before the campaigns, he was undertaking visits to at least three hospitals and secondary schools every month, to give support to them.

He said: “This is a visit that I would have made since January this year, but as you know, I was involved in campaigns. I didn’t want what I’m doing in the education and health sectors to be mixed up with politics.

“As a person, I endeavour to visit at least three hospitals and three secondary schools every month. As you would see later from the cheque I have for you, it was written since January this year.

“This Paul University is one of the institutions that benefits from my intervention once in a while in my own little way.

“I believe that to solve this country’s problems, we need to invest in human capital development, and this means investment in health and education, which is why I always intervene in these areas all over Nigeria.

“Elections are over and since I am no longer canvassing for votes, this is the time to show interest in my country by continuing what I have been doing.

“That is what I’m here to do at Paul University. I urge you all to keep doing the right thing as I believe that God will at his own time, intervene, and give salvation to Nigeria.”

Obi was welcomed to the institution by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Obiora Nwosu and the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Chinyere Okunna, who had worked with Obi during his tenure as governor of Anambra State as Commissioner and Chief of Staff.

I continue to thank all Nigerians, especially the youths and the Obidients, as they have remained focused on the core mission of a New Nigeria that is POssible even after the February 25, 2023 presidential election.

Before, during, and after the campaign, it is on record that I have maintained my commitment and focus on issue-based campaign about a New Nigeria that is POssible, a shift of emphasis from consumption to production, a New Nigeria characterized by inclusion, justice, equity, fairness, and prosperity.

I repeatedly stated that no one should vote for me based on Tribe or Religion, but rather on the assessment of Character, Competence, Capacity, Credibility, and Compassion that can be trusted to create a New Nigeria!

The present attempts by the APC as a Party, and the APC Led-government through some government officials and agencies to divert our attention from our blatantly stolen mandate is unfortunate and sad.

These have come and continued to manifest in different ways, such as the malicious accusation of the Minister of Information, Mr Lai Mohammed, the circulation of a fake doctored audio call, and a pressure on me to leave the country.

Let me reiterate that the audio call being circulated is fake, and at no time throughout the campaign and now did I ever say, think, or even imply that the 2023 election is, or was a religious war.

The attempts to manipulate Nigerians is very sad and wicked. Our legal team have been instructed to take appropriate legal actions against Peoples Gazette and others.

While we call on all concerned Nigerians and the International Community to implore the APC and the APC Led-government to stop their nasty attacks, my focus and commitment to lawfully and peacefully retrieve our mandate to secure and unite our Nation, take Nigeria from consumption to production, pull millions of Nigerians out of multidimensional poverty especially in the North, and jumpstart prosperity through agricultural, industrial, and technological revolution remain unchanged.

Elections are over, and we are in court to retrieve our stolen mandate. Let me reiterate that we are doing so through all lawful and peaceful options in line with our legal system and constitution, and I continue to implore all Nigerians to remain peaceful and law abiding.

Those fixated with heating up the polity, creating divisions, tensions and hatred within and outside Nigeria should remember that Nigeria is our only country. Our focus should be on how to address the litany of challenges facing us, such as:

flawed electoral processes, the parlous state of our economy, unsustainable debt burden, lamentable unemployment and inflation, insecurity, and multi-dimensional poverty. A New Nigeria is indeed POssible, and God will help us. -PO

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, has replied to the Nigerian Army, over the comment by its Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya, that it and Eastern Security Network, ESN, are threatening the integrity of the nation.


IPOB in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, urged Lt. Gen. Yahaya to rescue from Boko Haram insurgents Leah Sharibu and many others abducted from their schools, tame the violent activities of herdsmen before talking about IPoB volunteers and ESN operatives.

The pro-Biafra group also urged General Yahaya to justify his claim against IPoB and ESN by showing the world where he and his officers and soldiers have been able to defend and protect their territory.

“Instead the Chief of Army Staff, his officer and soldiers are busy hunting for innocent IPoB and our forests-protecting ESN operatives.

“We are surprised that this man does not know that IPoB is fighting for their inalienable right and they are not threatening Nigeria, but Nigeria’s government and her security agencies are threatening IPoB because IPoB is a peaceful movement seeking for inalienable right.

“Nigeria Army and other security agencies have been attacking IPoB for no just cause, but they will regret fighting IPoB since the beginning of this journey to freedom.

“Nigeria territorial borders are porous around Cameroon, Tchad, Niger and the Benin Republic, but Nigeria Army could not fight, but is ready to intimidate harass and humiliate innocent citizens.

“The General should know that IPoB is not responsible for their nightmare.”
