Nigerian players were in action on matchday two of the Champions League and Europa League which was played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Atletico Madrid 1 - 2 Chelsea
Nigeria winger Victor Moses put up a superb display to help Chelsea defeat Atletico Madrid 1-2 at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.

Victor Moses would have gotten his name on the score sheet in the 55th minute but took too many touches when he should have shot straight at goal.
Moses defended well and linked up attack, pulling nice cross for target man Alvaro Morata.

Juventus 2 - 0 Olympiacos
Nigerian striker Emmanuel Emenike played 88th minutes for his Greek club Olympiacos in their 2-0 loss to Italian champions Juventus at the Allianz Stadium.

Emenike was checked by the defence pairing of ..

Sports / WAFU CUP: Ghanian Midfielder Vows To Defeat Nigeria In Sunday's Final by Guiderlaurel: 7:36am On Sep 24, 2017
Home-Based Black Stars of Ghana midfielder Emmanuel Lomotey has vowed to help Ghana defeat Nigeria in the final of the WAFU Cup on Sunday 90minutesgoal.com reports.

Lomotey who scooped the "Nasco Man of the match'' award for his splendid display in Ghana's 2-0 win over Niger Republic in the second semi-final match played on Thursday, told 90minutesgoal.com, that defeating Nigeria will help appease fans of Ghana after the failure of the team to qualify for the CHAN competition scheduled to hold in Kenya next year.

The Stallions of Burkina Faso dispatched Ghana 4-3 over two legs to pick a ticket to the 2018 CHAN tournament last month.

The final against Nigeria on Sunday is a must win because we want to take revenge for the loss to Nigeria the last time we meet in the WAFU Cup, Lomotey said.

Nigeria are not new to us, we know how they play. It is not an easy game, but we will prepare well for them. This game is the only chance we have to appease fans of Ghana for failure to be at the CHAN next year. We'll fight to lift the cup on Sunday, Lomotey concluded.
Nigeria and Ghana will clash for the 51st time since the two teams first met on 16 Oct 1950. Nigeria have won 11 times, while Ghana are ahead with 22 wins. Both teams have 10 draws between them.

The WAFU 2017 final will be played on Sunday at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium by 4:30pm Nigeria time (3:30pm Ghanaian time).

The winner of the final will pocket $100,000 (about ₦36 million) prize money.

Sports / Coach Sunday Oliseh Guides His Club To A Big Win by Guiderlaurel: 11:45pm On Sep 22, 2017
Former Super Eagles coach and captain, Sunday Oliseh guided his club Fortuna Sittard on Friday night to an emphatic 5-1 trashing of Jong AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands Eerste Divisie.

Oliseh's troops started well and took an early lead in the 11th minute via French Winger Djibril Dianessy.

Oliseh's tatical input and style of play was a beauty to watch, as his boys tore the AZ Alkmaar backline apart with killer passes and attacks.

The early goal destabilized the visitors and they could not put up a fight to Fortuna Sittard's constant attacks which lead to Djibril Dianessy getting his second for the night through a penalty in the 15th minute.

However Jong AZ Alkmaar pulled one back through Tijjani Reijnders in the 16th minute to give their fans a possible hope of a come back and restoration of parity.

That did not materialize, as Lisandro Semedo made it 3-1 in the 17th minute and Dutch centre back Perr Schuurs scored in the 16th minute to put the game beyond the reach of the visitors.

Lisandro Semedo got his brace for the night when he finished calmly in the 69th minute to seal the game.

Fortuna Sittard are now second on the log with 13 points from six matches played.

Oliseh was appointed as coach of Fortuna Sittard in the second stanza of 2016/2018 season.

Fortuna Sittard will face Telstar in their next game in the Eerste Divisie on September 29 and Sunday Oliseh will be hoping to guide his players to another victory.

Sports / Players Rating: How Super Eagles Performed Against Cameroon In 1-1 Draw by Guiderlaurel: 10:53am On Sep 05, 2017
The Super Eagles were superb on Monday against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, as they took a step closer in qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup holding in Russia.

Chinedu Laurel Okorodike of 90minutesgoal.com take a close look at how the starting Eleven and substitutes performed in the battle in Yaounde.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa (Goalkeeper)

The FC IfeanyiUbah goalkeeper was picked to replace the injured Daniel Akpeyi .
Ezenwa was impressive, calm and had good communication with Troost and Balogun. Some football lovers and pundits are of the opinion that the penalty conceded by Nigeria was as a result of his inexperience. But I think any goalkeeper can make that mistake.

The great Jens Lehman of Germany and Arsenal once caught a player's (Eto'o) leg in a champions league final. The action caused Arsenal the final against Barcelona in 2006.

Ezenwa will grow into a fine keeper in future , but he needs to stop his show boating. Rating 7/10 (★★★★★★★)

Shehu Abdullahi (right back)

Athough Shehu Abdullahi is a natural midfielder, he also plays so well in the right-back position and Monday's game against Cameroon was not different. The C.F. União of Portugal player did not disappoint against Cameroon.

He defended very well, but did not surge forward to link up play especially when Christian Basagog came in. Rating 6/10 (★★★★★★)

ELDERSON ECHIEJILE (Left Back)

The Sivasspor and Super Eagles defender was the biggest suspect in the game. Even the Cameroonians observed his deficiencies and launched series of offensive moves though his position during the game.

He got covered occasionally by Leon Balogun.
He offered nothing going upfront as Nigeria had no offensive attack via the left flank because he did not overlap. Rating 5/10 (★★★★★)

Leon Balogun (Central defence)

The rugged defender who plies his trade in Germany with Mainz 05 was simply outstanding and a delight to watch. It was his second appearance for Nigeria after he missed the 2-0 loss to South Africa in Uyo.

He partnered so effectively well with William Troost-Ekong in the heart of the Nigerian defence and occasionally provided cover for teammate Elderson Echiejile. His sliding tackles were well timed and his aerial power was greeted with cheers.

He will continue to be an integral member of the team as long as he stays fit. Rating 8/10 (★★★★★★★★)

WILLIAM TROOST-EKONG (Central defence)

He was physically ready for the Cameroonians. He partnered so well with with Leon Balogun to keep tabs and checkmate Aboubakar. His tackles were timely and effective. His partnership with Leon Balogun is a beauty to watch. Rating 7/10 (★★★★★★★)

Mikel Obi (attacking midfield)

Mikel showed why he is the heart and soul of the Nigerian team. His touches, passes and vision was good. His leadership qualities rubbed on every other player. The Cameroonians only found space in the Nigerian midfield only when Mikel was substituted in the 65th minute. Rating 7/10 (★★★★★★★)

Wilfred Ndidi (defensive midfield)

He showed dominance and strength accompanied with good passing ability. He nullified and intercepted all dangerous moves and build up plays by Cameroon. He provided adequate shield for the duo of Troost and Balogun at the back-line.

Mikel Obi benefited the most from Ndidi work-rate as Mikel had had more confidence and assurance going forward. Rating 7/10 (★★★★★★★)

Victor Moses (winger)

The Chelsea man combined good attacking plays and good defensive displays. He brought pain and agony to the Cameroonian defense with constant onslaught. He almost scored with a beautiful chip that missed the target narrowly. He was guilty of clear-cut misses. Rating 7/10 (★★★★★★★)

ONAZI OGENYI

He did his job well which was to provide cover in the midfield but occasionally he was suspect with the ball.

The Cameroonians found Onazi a hard nut to crack as he worked so hard running and covering distances on the pitch until he was replaced by Oghenekaro Etebo in the 87th minute. His combative tackles earned him a yellow card in the game. Rating 6/10 (★★★★★★)

Moses Simon (winger)

The Gent man continued where he stopped in the first leg in Uyo. He was the best player in the field and a constant threat to the duo of Fai Collins and Leuko Tchaha of Cameroon.

Moses Simon scored Nigeria's only goal with a well placed volley. Rating 8/10 (★★★★★★★★)

Odion Ighalo (striker)

He was a threat to the Cameroonian back-line. He almost scored when he turned Teikeu Adolph inside-out with a breathtaking dribble, only for his shot to missed the target just narrowly.

Ighalo was replaced in the 79th minute by Kelechi Iheanacho. Rating 7/10 (★★★★★★★)

The Substitutes

Mikel Ndubusi Agu (winger)

Agu replaced Mikel Obi and did little well to command the midfield. The Bursaspor FC of Turkey player could not reciprocate the fine display he exhibited in the first leg against Cameroon in Uyo. Rating 5/10 (★★★★★)

Oghenekaro Etebo (Midfielder)

Was hardly in action when he replaced Onazi Ogenyi. He ended up chasing around the pack and could not soak up the pressure from Cameroonians. Rating 5/10 (★★★★★)

Kelechi Iheanaco (striker)

The Leicester City forward was a 79th minute substitution for Odion Ighalo. He barely had any impact in the game unlike the first leg where we came in and scored Nigeria's fourth and final goal against Cameroon. Rating 5/10 (★★★★★)

Sports / Why Nigeria Need To Enjoy The Recent Success Against Cameroon by Guiderlaurel: 10:35am On Sep 05, 2017
By Chinedu Laurel Okorodike

Matches between the Super Eagles and Cameroon is never for the chicken hearted, as it comes with intrigues, moments of sheerness and talking points that makes news headlines.

Till date, the two sides have clashed 22 times including competitive and friendly games, with Nigeria winning 11, while Cameroon have four wins crested under their name. Seven of the 22 past encounters ended in draw.

For Cameroon, they boast of a record which has seen them defeat Nigeria when it matters most even at club level.

If not for the dominance of Cameroon, Nigeria would have lifted the African Cup of Nations trophy (AFCON) six times.

Nigeria have lost to Cameroon in three AFCON finals,1984, 1988 and 2000.

The AFCON 2000, loss to Cameroon is still fresh in the minds of soccer loving fans of the Super Eagles especially Victor Ikpeba's penalty which was disallowed.

Nigeria lost the 1984 AFCON final held in Ivory Coast to Cameroon. The likes of Tarila Okorowanta, Festus Adegboyega, Rashidi Yekini, Adenoma Adesina could not stop the hefty Cameroonians who paraded legendary goalkeeper Thomas Nkono and goal king Roger Milla.

The Green Eagles (as it was called then) lost 3-1 to Cameroon. It was Cameroon's first AFCON trophy.

In 1988 both teams meet again in the AFCON final. This time in Morocco. Nigeria had a team packed with exceptional talents. The likes of Late Samuel Okwaraji, Late Stephen Keshi, Henry Nwosu, Bright Omokaro, Yisa Shofoluwe, Peter Rufai, Ndubuisi Okosieme, were all around causing damages to opponents.

Once again the Manfred Horner tutored Nigeria team got to the final but lost to Cameroon in a manner which remains questionable.

Midfield maestro Henry Nwosu gave Nigeria the lead but the Mauritanian referee disallowed the goal.

The referee went ahead to award a penalty to Cameroon in the 55th minute which Emmanuel Kunde converted to ensure Cameroon lifted the trophy once again. It was there second triumph in the AFCON

The Italia 1990 World Cup Qualifiers brought both teams together once again. Nigeria defeated Cameroon 2-0 in the first leg in Lagos and needed just a draw in the return leg which was played at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, Yaounde to qualify.

But legendary Cameroonian attacker Francois Omam Biyik broke Nigerians heart by scoring the goal that ensured Cameroon's passage to the 1990 World Cup fiesta.

The painful part of that debacle was the death of Samuel Okwaraji who lost his life while playing for Nigeria against Angola in the same World Cup qualifier on 12th August 1989.

The then Captain of the team Stephen Keshi (who incidentally is Late too) said the team wanted to qualify for the Italia 1990 World Cup as a mark of honour for the late Samuel Okwaraji.

In the year 2000, Nigeria made a return to the AFCON after they were banned by CAF for failing to defend the title won in 1994 in Tunisia.

It is a Known fact that South Africa won the 1996 AFCON on home soil due to the absence of Nigeria.

The AFCON 2000 was tagged Ghana/Nigeria 2000 as it was co-hosted by Nigeria and Ghana.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria paraded a star studded team who were regulars in their European clubs and were also at the tick and prime of their careers.

The team was made up of Captain Sunday Oliseh (Juventus), Victor Ikpeba (Borussia Dortmund), Kanu Nwankwo (Arsenal FC), Taribo West (AC Milan), Jay Jay Okocha (PSG), Julius Aghahowa (Shakhtar Donetsk), Tijani Babangida (Ajax), Celestine Babayaro (Chelsea), Daniel Amokachi (Beşiktaş), Finidi George (Real Mallorca) and many more other players.

Two first half goals from Tijani Babangida helped Nigeria dispatch South Africa in the Semi Final in Lagos to set up a Final match meeting in Lagos with Cameroon who defeated Tunisia also in their Semi Final clash.

Cameroon took an early two goals lead via Eto'o in the 26th minute and Patrick M'Boma (I will always remember that name).

Jay Jay Okocha and Raphel Ndukwe (who was the co-commentator on Supersports 9 when Nigeria trashed Cameroon in Uyo on Friday) equalized to make it 2-2.

The game went into penalty shootout and Kanu and Ikpeba missed for Nigeria. The entire crowd present at the National Stadium Lagos were stunned when Ikpeba's penalty was disallowed. That decision turned the game against Nigeria.

Pictures of Ikpeba putting his hand on his head and Sunday Oliseh weeping like a baby remains fresh in my memory. It was a sad Valentines day for soccer loving Nigerians across the globe (The final was played on February 14, 2000).

Both sides clashes again at the 2004 AFCON hosted in Tunisia. This time it was in the Quarter final.

Cameroon raced into an early lead through Samuel Eto'o but Jay Jay Okocha equalized via a stunning freekick and John Utaka smashed the winner to eliminate Cameroon who were the defending Champions. (after lifting the trophy in Mali 2002 at the expense of a Senegalese side led by El Hadji Diof).

Although Nigeria defeated Cameroon 3-0 in an International friendly played in 2015, the recent victory over Cameroon in the 2018 World Cup Qualifiers will help sooth some painful nerves.

It is a decent revenge which came competitively at the right time. So let all soccer loving Nigerians savor and enjoy this moment.

Sports / Ikechukwu Ezenwa To Start Ahead Of Injured Akpeyi Against Cameroon by Guiderlaurel: 7:08pm On Aug 30, 2017
By Staff Reporter Chinedu Laurel Okorodike

Coach of Nigeria Super Eagles Gernot Rohr has revealed that FC IfeanyiUbah goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa will between the sticks in the World Cup 2018 Qualifiers against Cameroon in Uyo on Friday.

Rohr who revealed this during the Media parley held at the Le Meridien, Uyo today, said his decision to start Ezenwa was because he (Ezenwa) did well for Nigeria in the two legged CHAN 2018 Qualifiers against Benin Republic which Nigeria won 2-1 on aggregate to progress.

You will recall that Chippa United of South Africa goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, had always been ahead of Ikechukwu Ezenwa before now in the pecking order
Akpeyi suffered backlashes and criticism after Nigeria’s 0-2 loss against South Africa in the AFCON 2019 qualifiers in Uyo on June 10.

Ezenwa will start on Friday. He had two good performances with the CHAN team and we are happy”, Rohr said during the media parley of the team.

Ikechukwu Ezenwa thus becomes the first home based goalkeeper to start a competitive game for Nigeria since Vincent Enyeama stood in goal against England in a 0-0 draw played in June 12, 2002.

Enyeama made his debut in a 3-0 win against Kenya on May 2, 2002 in a friendly match
