It's for shrinking long links into short links. If you try sending long links via email or text, sometimes the links get split and this can make it impossible for the recipient to view the link as it's broken. In such case, shortening the link will help prevent any issues. Also, the statistics for the short links can help someone(example: a blogger) to know where exactly his/her traffic is coming from.
