How the Elite Captured Nigeria

Nigeria is one of the richest nations in Africa in terms of natural and human resources, yet millions of its citizens continue to struggle with poverty, unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, and insecurity. Many observers describe this contradiction as the result of elite capture: a situation in which a relatively small group of politically and economically powerful individuals exercise disproportionate influence over the country's institutions and resources for their own benefit.

The roots of this phenomenon stretch back to the colonial era, when governance was highly centralized and authority was concentrated in the hands of a few. Following independence in 1960, many of these centralized structures remained. Instead of being fundamentally transformed, they often became instruments through which political influence and access to public resources were maintained.

The years of military rule further strengthened centralized power. Decision making became concentrated within a narrow circle, while democratic institutions weakened. Networks of patronage expanded, and loyalty to individuals frequently became more valuable than loyalty to institutions. The discovery and commercialization of crude oil dramatically reshaped Nigeria's political economy. Oil revenues became the primary source of government income, making control of the state one of the fastest routes to immense wealth and influence. Political competition increasingly revolved around access to public resources rather than the development of productive industries. This dependence on oil also reduced incentives to diversify the economy and strengthen other sectors.

Political patronage became deeply embedded in governance. Appointments, contracts, and public spending were often used to reward political allies and maintain support networks. In such an environment, merit, transparency, and efficiency could become secondary to political loyalty.

Weak institutions also contributed to elite capture. Where oversight agencies, procurement systems, law enforcement, and accountability mechanisms lack sufficient independence or capacity, opportunities for corruption and abuse of power increase. Public institutions can become vulnerable to manipulation by individuals or groups with significant political or financial influence.

Election financing has further reinforced these dynamics. Campaigns require substantial financial resources, often provided by wealthy sponsors or political financiers. After elections, these sponsors may expect appointments, contracts, or policy decisions that advance their interests, creating incentives that may conflict with the broader public good.

The consequences of elite capture extend far beyond politics. They affect healthcare, education, infrastructure, electricity, job creation, security, and economic growth. Public resources that could improve the lives of millions may instead be diverted, mismanaged, or allocated inefficiently. As a result, many citizens experience declining trust in public institutions and increasing frustration with governance.

Despite these challenges, Nigeria is not defined solely by elite influence. Across the country, many public servants, entrepreneurs, journalists, civil society organizations, judges, and ordinary citizens continue to advocate for transparency, accountability, and reform. Democratic participation, independent institutions, responsible leadership, and an informed electorate remain essential to reducing the influence of elite capture over time.

Ultimately, Nigeria's future depends not on the interests of a privileged few, but on the strength of its institutions, the rule of law, and the active participation of its citizens. Sustainable national development requires governance that serves the common good, protects public resources, and ensures that opportunity is available to all Nigerians rather than concentrated in the hands of a small and powerful minority.

A ghost agency with a ₦1.3 billion budget?

The Chief of Staff says the agency does not exist. Yet the 2026 Appropriation Act reportedly allocates it ₦1.3 billion.

So who approved the money? Who signed off on it? Who planned to spend it?

This is bigger than a contradiction. It is a test of the government's credibility. Nigerians deserve answers, not denials. If this is a ghost agency, then someone tried to make billions disappear in broad daylight.

This is exactly why Nigerians are losing confidence in this government. How can an agency officially declared "nonexistent" by the Chief of Staff receive ₦1.3 billion in the national budget? Either someone inserted a ghost agency into the budget, or the Presidency is not telling Nigerians the truth. Both possibilities are deeply disturbing. Nigerians deserve answers, not contradictions.
