The Greek word translated "sin" is *hamartia* (ἁμαρτία). Although the word can refer to individual sins, Paul frequently uses it in Romans 6 as a power, a master, a reigning authority, and a governing principle operating through the mortal body.

Notice Paul's language:

"Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body."

Kings reign.

Governments reign.

Masters reign.

Paul presents sin not merely as something people do, but as something that seeks to rule.

This is why Romans 6 cannot be reduced to a list of moral instructions. Paul is unveiling a change of dominion.

Before CHRIST, man lived under the government of the flesh. His bodily appetites, passions, desires, fears, lusts, cravings, emotions, and natural impulses exercised tremendous influence over his life. The body became the platform through which sin expressed its authority.

This is why Paul does not simply say, "Stop committing sins."

Instead he says:

"Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin."

The word "reckon" means to count as true, to recognize a reality, to acknowledge a fact already established.

Paul is not telling believers to become dead to sin.

He is telling them to recognize that through union with CHRIST they have already died to sin's dominion.

The believer's death with CHRIST was not merely the forgiveness of past wrongs.

It was the termination of an old government.

A slave who dies is no longer under the authority of his former master.

Likewise, the believer has died with CHRIST, and therefore sin has lost its legal claim to rule him.

This is why Paul immediately continues:

"Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof."

Notice the connection.

Because you have died to sin's authority, do not allow it to continue functioning as your ruler.

The issue is not merely wrongdoing.

The issue is rulership.

The issue is government.

The issue is who occupies the throne.

The phrase "in your mortal body" is critically important.

The sexual powers.

The physical appetites.

The word translated "instruments" can also carry the idea of weapons.

Paul is therefore saying:

Do not place your bodily faculties at the disposal of the old ruler.

Do not hand your weapons back to the defeated king.

Do not place your eyes in the service of darkness.

Do not place your tongue in the service of corruption.

Do not place your mind in the service of the old regime.

Instead:

"Yield yourselves unto GOD, as those that are alive from the dead."

This is resurrection language.

The believer is not attempting to obtain life.

He is living from life already received.

He does not serve GOD ALMIGHTIEST in order to become alive.

He serves because he has already been made alive.

He does not fight for freedom.

He fights from freedom.

He does not strive for a new identity.

He lives from the identity already given through JESUS CHRIST.

Then comes the triumphant declaration:

This is not merely a command.

It is a proclamation.

Paul does not say sin should not have dominion.

He says sin shall not have dominion.

A person's appearance can be deceptive.

A person can dress religiously and still be carnal.

A person can look ordinary and yet be full of the HOLY SPIRIT.

Likewise, speech alone is not always sufficient to reveal the whole man.

People can say spiritual things without possessing spiritual life.

People can quote scripture and still walk according to the flesh.

People can speak humbly while their hearts remain proud.

What ultimately reveals a person is the nature that governs their mind and life.

Words are important because they can expose what fills the heart, but even then, righteous judgment requires more than listening to a few statements or observing outward appearances. It requires discernment of the fruit, character, conduct, and spiritual direction of a person's life.

Therefore, believers should not form conclusions about people merely because of how they look or from a few things they say. The real question is: What mind is governing them? Are they setting their minds on the things of the flesh, or on the things of the Spirit?

It also speaks of authority. CHRIST is seated far above every ruler, authority, power, and dominion. Because we are united with HIM, we participate in HIS victory over sin, death, and the powers of darkness. We do not stand before GOD ALMIGHTIEST as defeated people, but as those who are joined to the victorious CHRIST.

This seating also speaks of rest. CHRIST completed the work of redemption and took HIS seat in the heavenly realms. Therefore, the believer does not strive to earn acceptance before GOD ALMIGHTIEST. Our confidence rests in what CHRIST has already accomplished.

Furthermore, being seated with CHRIST reveals our heavenly citizenship. Though we live on earth, our life is hidden with CHRIST in GOD. Our inheritance is heavenly, our hope is heavenly, and our destiny is secured in CHRIST.

Therefore, to be seated together with CHRIST means that through our union with HIM, GOD ALMIGHTIEST has given us a place in the heavenly realms. Though we walk on earth, we belong to the heavenly realm, and our position in CHRIST is established forever.

The wealth of the new creations in CHRIST cannot be understood merely by looking at earthly possessions, financial prosperity, influence, status, or material abundance. The wealth that belongs to those who are in CHRIST originates from GOD ALMIGHTIEST and exists first in the heavenly realm before it is ever expressed in earthly realities.
