Health / Over Hundred Thousand Children Die In Nigeria Annually Due To Inadequate Breastf by HAMEED16: 2:00pm On Aug 04, 2017
Over hundred thousand children die in Nigeria annually due to inadequate breastfeeding
At least 103,742 children died in Nigeria annually as a result of inadequate breastfeeding, according to the United Nation Children Fund (UNICEF).
UNICEF Nutrition Specialist, Mrs Ada Ezeogu disclosed this at a 2-day Media Dialogue on Breastfeeding and Global Breastfeeding Collective held in Ibadan, Oyo State, as part of activities marking the World Breastfeeding Week.
The media dialogue was organized by the Child Rights Information Bureau (CRIB) of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture in collaboration with UNICEF and sponsored by the Department for International Development.
Ezeogu said “the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding in children below the age of six months is only 17 percent, which means that at least 5.4 million children each year do not get the powerful health and immunological benefits of breastfeeding.”
She explained that when cognitive losses and health costs are added in, inadequate breastfeeding is estimated to cost the Nigerian economy $21 billion per year, or 4.1 percent of its Gross National Index (GNI).
According to her, in a country with a high under-five mortality rate and high birth rate, inadequate breastfeeding leads to 103,742 child deaths each year which in turn translates into almost $12 billion in future economic losses for the country.
Ezeogu enumerated the necessary actions and steps required to enhance successful breastfeeding and charged health care providers to give adequate attention to issues of breastfeeding.
In his remarks at the media dialogue, The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohummed charged the media to step-up public enlightenment on optimal breastfeeding of babies to prevent infant mortality and produce healthy and intelligent children.
The Information Minister who was represented by the Assistant Director, Child Rights Information Bureau, Mr Olumide Osanyinpeju urged journalists to assist in educating and sensitizing the public on the need to ensure optimal breastfeeding of infants.
The Minister said it has become very necessary to propagate optimal breastfeeding in the country and that government and all stakeholders must take necessary actions propagate optimal breastfeeding.
According to him, “there is need for all to rise up for the propagation, as early breastfeeding can make the difference between life and death. Government alone cannot fight this cause, hence, the need for collaboration with agencies, NGOs and other partners and organizations to advocate on how best to address the issue.”
In his remarks, the UNICEF Chief of Akure Field office said this year’s edition of the annual world breastfeeding week with the theme “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together” was a significant event to promote breastfeeding.
Tejinder said breastfeeding helps provide children with the healthiest start to life. He explained that breastfeeding also acts as the child’s first vaccine by providing antibodies.
His words “Breastfed children have at least 6 times greater chance of survival in the early months than non-breastfed children. An exclusively breastfed child is 14 times less likely to die in the first six months than a non-breastfed child.”
UNICEF Communication Officer, Mrs Blessing Ejiofor said the dialogue was aimed at creating opportunities for informed media advocacy on breastfeeding and issues of children’s well-being and survival in Nigeria.
According to her, “the dialogue is to provide journalists with more information and materials to hold government accountable to its responsibility to promote breastfeeding”
UNICEF Communication Specialist, Mr Geoffrey Njoku said the dialogue was designed to equipped journalists with necessary information through in-depth and analytical presentations on the subject matter to prevail on the government to expedite action on low level of breastfeeding in Nigeria.
Njoku said “there is need for aggressive reportage on breastfeeding with focus on increasing government funding to increase the rate of breastfeeding in Nigeria.”
Also, the Assistant Chief Nutrition Officer at the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs Rakiyat Idris said the federal government has put necessary policies in place to support family development and that the government would not relent in promoting optimal breastfeeding.

Crime / Gbongan Killing: Monarch Tasks Police On Proper Prosecution Of Culprits by HAMEED16: 9:51pm On Jun 30, 2017
The Olufi of Gbongan in Ayedaade Local Government area of Osun State, Oba Adetoyese Oyeniyi has urges the Police to conduct a very diligent investigation and ensure proper prosecution of the 80-year-old man, Ganiyu Oladosu that was caught with human parts in the town.

The monarch urged the police to ensure that the culprit and his accomplices face the full wrath of the law. He explained that what Oladosu did was alien to the community and that the murderer would no longer be accepted in the town.

Olufi said this while addressing the Chiefs and head of communities after an emergency meeting of the Gbongan Traditional Council held at the Olufi Pallace. The traditional ruler said he disowned Oladosu who is a prince from the Sooko ruling house in the town.

Oladosu who was caught with human parts in his house at the Idifa located at Ile-Eesu compound in Gbongan was handed over to the police and he was detained at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Osogbo, the state capital.

Oba Oyeniyi said he is a true Christian and that he would never allow anyone to killing another human being for any reason. He urged the state government to take appropriate steps to ensure that perpetrators would not go unpunished.

“Gbongan is a very peaceful town and we embrace visitors. This ancient town remains very peaceful. The disturbing case of one Ganiyu Oladosu from Sooko ruling family that was caught human parts was very unfortunate as it is contrary to our way of life here.”

“I want to appeal to the state government and the police to handle this matter properly and without delay. People of this town want justice to be done. The perpetrators must be punished according to the law.

“Failure to punish him appropriately through the necessary state mechanisms might attract the anger of the people who had wanted to kill him before we persuaded them to release the suspect to the police just to avoid jungle justice”, Olufi explained.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the Vice Chairman of Gbongan Progressive Elements, Chief Saka Kola Owopade said the Olufi spoke the minds of the entire people of the town.

Owopade said, “As our Kaabiesi said, the suspect must face the full wrath of the law. The matter must be thoroughly investigated. We are surprised that there were no reported cases of missing persons in this town; yet, the man has killed many people. Definitely, his victims are not indigenes of the town. Who are is accomplice? We want the police to find out all these and bring the perpetrators to book.”

A traditional High Chief who is also from the royal family where the suspect hails from, Chief Oduola Abioye condemned the action of Oladosu and expressed regret that the family name was tarnished.

Abioye said “In fact, it was my children that noticed that something wrong was happening in Oladosu’s house due to violent odour that was coming out from the building. We eventually searched the house and discovered some parts of boy of human being there. He wanted to run away but we caught him and handed him over to police.”

“Oladosu was living in Abeokuta before he relocated to Gbongan and he started selling bread when he came back home. We didn’t know that he was perpetrating such evil in his house. One of his wives died sometimes ago and the second wife had left him long time ago.”

“When he was stay in Abeokuta, we know that he has eleven children and they used to come with him occasionally but we don’t know the whereabouts of his children at the moment.”

“Oladosu and quarrel with me when i prevented him from selling his father’s house which was built on a land that belong to all of us. Because I didn’t allow him to sell the building after the death of his father, he considered me as his enemy and we have not been talking to each other. That was why I didn’t know much about him after his return to Gbongan from Abeokuta”, Abioye explained.

Osun holds Africa’s first cocoa festival
The first cocoa festival in Africa has been held at Eti-Oni, the ancient community which pioneered the production of cocoa in Nigeria over 120 years ago.
Cocoa farmers, produce buyers, dignitaries and tourists converged at the Gureje Square in Eti-Oni in Atakumosa East Local Government area of Osun State where the cocoa festival took place.
The Oloni of Eti-Oni, Oba Dokun Thompson, while speaking on the occasion, expressed worry that Eti-Oni and other cocoa producing communities in Nigeria were wallowing in abject poverty.
He frowned that despite the richness of the land, the cocoa wealth did not manifest in the lives of the cocoa farmers and their communities because of the anger on the Land. The monarch warned that poverty would persist unless the Land was appeased.
The traditional ruler explained that there may have been a curse upon the Land following the manner a renowned Yoruba king, Oba Emmanuel Olajide Layode, Soun of Ogbomoso was killed mercilessly in 1969 during the Agbekoya revolt that occurred following the hike in taxation on cocoa.
During the cocoa festival which was tagged Gureje Day, Oba Thompson raised the Bible that was presented to him by the Christian community in Eti-Oni and showered blessings on the community and the nation.
According to him, “This Cocoa Festival was meant to mark the 120 years of cocoa production in Nigeria as pioneered by Eti-Oni. But you would be wondering that this wealthy community was languishing in abject poverty over the years”.
“There would be wealth on the land and poverty would varnish when we appease the Land. That was why I sought the intervention of the King of kings who created the Heavens and the Earth”, Oba Thompson said.
The Osile Oke-Ona Egba, Oba Adedapo Tejuoso who was Royal Guest of Honour on the occasion joined his host, Oba Thompson in appeasing the Land and speaking out blessings upon the Land through the Scriptures.
Speaking on the occasion, Osun State Governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola reiterated the need to go back to farming as the panacea to the current economic situation caused by dwindling oil revenue.
The governor lauded Oba Thompson for his pragmatic approach to redirect the attention of the people to focusing on profitable cocoa production that would bring maximum gain to the farmers and change the fortune of the people.
Aregbesola who was represented by the Coordinating Director in the Osun State Ministry of Agriculture, Food Processing and Youth Engagement, Dr. Isaac Aluko promised full support for any initiative geared towards agribusiness.
The governor formally presented the Premium Artisan Eti-Oni Chocolate Brand to the public and also launched the Eti-Oni Model Smart Town which is to be developed in line with the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Education / UNIOSUN New VC Okays Sack Of Randy Lecturer, Ojoniyi Over Illicit Sex With Stude by HAMEED16: 8:26pm On Nov 15, 2016
UNIOSUN new VC okays sack of randy lecturer, Ojoniyi over illicit sex with student

The newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, Professor Labode Popoola has okayed the dismissal of a lecturer at the Department of Languages and Linguistics, Dr. Olabode Wale Ojoniyi for engaging in illicit sex with a student of the institution, Miss Mercy Ikwue.
It was learnt that the embattled lecturer has written a letter to the management of the university to protest his dismissal and demanded that he must be reinstated. In his letter of appeal, according to a source, Ojoniyi claimed that he was set up and that he was not ready to leave the university.
But, in his maiden press briefing at the main campus of the university in Osogbo, on Tuesday, the new VC who assumed duty this week said the dismissal of Ojoniyi followed due process and that the decision to disengage him was in order.
Professor Popoola expressed disappointment that a lecturer who was supposed to be a father and mentor to his students could engage in such 'immoral' act that brought his name to disrepute.
When asked whether Ojoniyi's doctorate degree could be withdrawn, the VC said “Degrees are worked for and earned. Degrees are issued on learning and character. I’m not in best position to speak on his degree. The university that awarded him the degree is in position to do so.”
Professor Popoola urged the media and other stakeholders in the state to put the Ojoniyi’s sex scandal behind and support his vision to take the university to greater heights.
The VC said he has put machineries in place to ensure moral and value re-orientation and assured the students and their parents that such ugly incident would no longer be experienced in the university.
He said, "Teaching, learning and community service never stopped at any time despite the crisis. The crisis might have affected morale and confidence of some but it has not stopped us from working and moving on.
"All the stakeholders have agreed to put the challenges behind us and move forward. We enjoin everyone, including the media to join us so that we can take UNIOSUN to greater heights."
