European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Bale Was Not Worth Such A Massive Transfer Fee, Says Real Madrid Legend Zidane by Hankok(m): 6:13pm On Sep 13, 2013 |
Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane has dubbed the astronomical £85.3m transfer fee his club paid for Wales winger Gareth Bale "incomprehensible" in the current economic climate. Bale signed for the Spanish giants from Tottenham Hotspur last week on a six-year contract. Asked whether the 24-year-old was worth the hefty fee paid for him Zidane, who is now Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant coach at Real, said: "You need to ask that question in a year's time. "Ten years ago, they bought me for 75 million euros and I said I wasn't worth it. "Today, I tend to say a player is not worth that. Two clubs agree on a price and no-one is forcing the other to do anything. "That's football. Unfortunately, it's incomprehensible with what's happening today to pay so much." Zidane said he would offer Bale some advice as the Welshman seeks to hold down a place in Ancelotti's team. "My role will certainly be to tell him that he plays as he knows how to, to not put too much pressure on himself," he said. "He has an incredible potential but he still has room for improvement." Bale, who is currently on international duty with Wales, is expected to make his Real debut against Villarreal on September 14. |
Education / Shooting Can Help Boost Children's Education,education Head Says by Hankok(m): 6:00pm On Sep 13, 2013 |
Schoolchildren should be given the chance to shoot at an early age because handling guns can promote trust, concentration and self-discipline, a head teacher has said. Pupils as young as eight can pick up vital life skills by taking part in activities such as clay pigeon shooting, it is claimed. West Rise Junior School in Eastbourne is believed to be the first state-funded institution in the country to take primary-age pupils on a shooting trip. The school – which has access to 120 acres of marshland leased from the local council – already offers a range of outdoor activities designed to promote respect for the countryside such as boating, fishing and bird watching. Pupils also help to rear a range of animals including water buffalo. But today it emerged that the school has gone a step further by giving pupils aged eight to 11 the chance to take part in a day’s shooting activities. Mike Fairclough, the head, said shooting was common among private schools but was almost unheard of in the state system. Speaking to the Telegraph, he added: “It is very much about being outside and having a healthy and open-minded approach to guns. Most people, particularly in towns and cities, will associate guns with gang culture, Uzis and drugs. “But in the countryside, a shotgun is a tool that serves a purpose and if it is used safely and effectively it’s completely fine.” Some 30 children at the school – which takes several pupils from poor council estates – took part in the shoot day last term. It involved clay pigeon shooting with shotguns and target shooting using air rifles. Pupils were also taught about the role of gun dogs. Mr Fairclough insisted it was carried out under the supervision of experts from the British Association of Shooting and Conservation, with pupils handling shotguns in special cages. The disclosure was criticised by Gill Marshall-Andrews, from UK Gun Control Network. She told the Times Educational Supplement: “Guns are dangerous weapons which are frequently misused. No child should be taught to shoot until the age of 18 when they assume adult rights and responsibilities.” But Mr Fairclough said the activities boosted levels of concentration and focus, improved pupils’ eye-hand coordination and promoted trust. “We had lovely sweet little eight- year-old girls shooting massive shotguns but they didn’t then go around killing everyone afterwards; they just saw it as an activity that they enjoyed,” he said. He added: “We need to get beyond that Victorian, behind desks model of education and get children actively involved. We are a successful school, rated good with excellent features by inspectors, because we teach this way. "We trust independent school children everywhere to shoot at this age, so why do we not trust children at state-run schools?” The Preparatory School Rifle Association currently works with young children in 43 private schools. Mary Eveleigh, its secretary, told the TES that shooting could teach children to control their emotions and think about the consequences of their actions – vital for behaviour management. “There is no legal or physical barrier to teaching shooting from a young age, so why delay?” she said. “The benefits that shooting brings are as applicable to younger students as older ones and there is an argument that the younger the benefits and skills that come from shooting are installed, the better the long-term impact.” |

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / David Moyes Is Not Fit For Manchester United. by Hankok(m): 8:46am On Aug 26, 2013 |
No star signing, Rooney unsettled, and a novice chief executive. No pressure then, writes Jim White David Moyes said this week that he was looking forward to the new season beginning. “It can’t come soon enough,” he suggested, as he addressed journalists after Manchester United’s lacklustre performance in Sweden on Wednesday night. And you can understand why he is anxious for the summer’s phoney war to end: anything would be more uplifting than the pre-season he has just experienced. He is anxious for the summer’s phoney war to end: anything would be more uplifting than the pre-season he has just experienced Since he was appointed Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor in May, almost nothing has gone Moyes’ way. Like an inverse Midas, everything he has touched has turned to straw. He lost to the equivalent of a pub team in the Far East, his most renowned player, Wayne Rooney, is keen to play elsewhere and he has singularly failed to strengthen his squad in the areas it most urgently needs upgrading. A symptom of his summer of discontent was evident yesterday when he learnt that his lengthy pursuit of Cesc Fabregas had come to nought. Moreover the Barcelona midfielder indicated there was never the remotest chance he might return to the Premier League in Manchester United colours: Moyes had apparently spent the last month chasing the unattainable. “I am happy at Barcelona. My dream is to play and triumph here and I have never considered leaving,” the player told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur where the Catalans are on tour. Which, while accepting that the truth is the first casualty of the transfer window, sounds pretty unequivocal. No wonder, with the soap opera plotting of Wayne Rooney’s future filling the back pages, Moyes admitted he was finding the scale of his new job taxing. “The transition from Everton to Manchester United has been difficult at times as I have had hard decisions to make,” he said. “Everton are a great club and I was proud to manage them. I can’t deny Manchester United are on another level. Let’s be honest, it would be a step up from just about any other club in the world. The level of interest from the fans and press is phenomenal.” And in truth Moyes has not been assisted by the fact he is not the only new arrival in the United hierarchy. A manager without experience in the top end of the football market, he needed all the help he could get to negotiate his first few weeks in charge. Instead, whereas Ferguson could rely on advice and practical support from David Gill, a man with a decade’s worth of experience running a club of United’s scale, Moyes can only turn to the new chief executive Edward Woodward. A man with considerable prowess in marketing, Woodward is, however, someone who has never before engaged in the arcane processes of the football transfer market, a business requiring the bluffing skills of the poker player combined with the forked tongue of the serial conman. While he did not always get his man (the fat Ronaldo was just one of the players he failed to secure), at least Gill could pick up the phone to any agent or football club chief executive in the world and immediately start discussions. This summer Woodward was obliged to begin every conversation with an introduction. He has admitted to his colleague he is starting from scratch. From your own point of view what do you think? |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Gareth Bale Finally Seals £86m Move To Real Madrid by Hankok(m): 8:27am On Aug 26, 2013 |
Tottenham Hotspur have finally agreed the world-record €100 million (£86 million) transfer of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid. An official announcement is due to be made as early as Tuesday. Significantly, the agreement involves a straight cash deal with no players coming from Real to Spurs as had been earlier discussed when inquiries were made about striker Álvaro Morata and left-back Fábio Coentrão. Bale is in Malaga, at a villa believed to be owned by another of his representatives, David Manasseh, who works for the Stellar Group which is headed by Barnett. The 24-year old flew into Spain on Saturday, on a private jet, and spent Sunday behind the walls of the gated complex awaiting the green light on the deal. The luxury complex was being staked out yesterday by the expectant Spanish media. |
