maybe you have being using the refined shea butter that is why it seems not to be working. Using natural shea butter will not turn your skin black. But going out in the sun regularly can probably cause your skin to be lightly tanned . But overall it is still good for fair complexioned people. But not sure of the cocoa oil or coconut oil added in some of the refined ones.
