Afro-hair The beauty of every woman, they say lies in the hair. The African woman takes pride in the uniqueness that is found in carrying natural, well groomed hair. For some, it is a sign of our identity while others may carry their hair in its natural state either because it is fashionable or for a whole lot more reasons. Natural hair supporters go one step further to say natural hair is a nod to being a real African but what does that really have to do with being black? Are people who perm or straighten their hair being put in a different box from those who go natural? To a lot of people, it is a thing of choice. Gone are those days when you are mandated to carry a perm because it might be easier to manage or just because it is fashionable. Interestingly enough, the Afro look is coming back in vogue. So, watch out ladies. Eyitemi Ogunsakin, a mother of one spoke on the issue, saying, “I decided to keep my hair natural because hair relaxers were not working for me and it was difficult for me to get it relaxed. So I felt the best thing for me was to cut off the permed hair. Although, there are some hairstyles I see on others that fit them and long for such but because of my natural hair which I dreded, I can’t do them. The natural hair is not open to you fixing weave-ons that you can leave a bit of your hair out. Asides that, it is very easy to carry. It takes a lot of money to handle. There are people who buy a lot of stuffs to maintain their natural hair, there are a lot more ways to do it. It is time consuming, expensive. For me, because I am on dred-locks, I go to the salon every two weeks to wash my hair and buy some expensive things to take care of my hair. I decided to go natural in 2005 knowing fully well that there is some stigma attached to a woman being on dreds. I wanted to do it long before I got married. If you want your natural hair to look nice, then I would say it is not cheap. It is the same thing if you want your skin to look good without using a very expensive body cream. So it is really not cheap”. Mrs Toyin Nwaokolo also aired her views. She states, “I was tired of adding chemicals to my hair and going under the dryer. Besides, natural hair is in vogue. I am enjoying carrying my natural. I do not have any regrets going on my natural hair because you can play around and do all sorts with it. Editor’s note: Kofoworola Ayodeji, Naij.com guest author, laments a fact that the people who contribute enormously to the positive international image of Nigeria are celebrated all over the world, but do not receive proper respect and honour at their motherland. Story highlights: – “… I was heartbroken that Nigeria does not admire and celebrate her own sons and daughters demonstrating uncommon excellence in their areas of interest.” – “… Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian flag… was honoured a national award only after decades of neglect. Isn’t that disgraceful?” – “When they [the notable people] are honoured as deemed fit, this inspires and gives hope to the younger generation… In case of Nigeria, the situation is exactly opposite.” – “Please, tell me, who deserve the Order for Meritorious Service if not the outstanding and patriotic Nigerians? “ – “Our best brains must be encouraged, not depressed!” An Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has recently been awarded by the US Congress for his enormous contribution to music, and political activism. I received the news with the mixed feelings — excitement on one hand and anger on the other. I was excited because the music legend was remembered and recognised years after his death — that’s superb! However, I was heartbroken that Nigeria does not admire and celebrate her own sons and daughters demonstrating uncommon excellence in their areas of interest. One would quickly recall that Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of the Nigerian flag (a huge source of national pride), was honoured a national award only after decades of neglect. Isn’t that disgraceful? A few days later, it was all over the media that the Nigerian veteran comedian, Basketmouth, was specially honoured in far- away Houston— the 4th largest US city. Reportedly, July 17 was proclaimed Basketmouth Day by the mayor of the city of Houston in Texas. This was obviously done in recognition of his extraordinary feat. I doubt if anyone would dispute the fact that Basketmouth really deserves the great honour. I first saw him performing live at a campus show at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, where he came to thrill the students in the height of academic warfare, and I did doff my hat for him that day—he’s a great bundle of talents. In fact, I said to myself: “This guy is going places, and he will definitely win a national award someday.” That’s what I say whenever I come across young talented Nigerians and Africans, who sweep me off my feet – I am an incurable optimist. Beside Basketmouth and one or two other comedians, there are a number of exceptional Nigerians, who deserve the national awards. However, have they ever been considered? No. Let’s discuss some of these remarkable citizens. To the best of my knowledge, the national awards are not designed for the “friends of the government”, who are experts only when it comes to looting of the public funds. Instead, they are designed in order to recognise the contributions of the notable people to the development of their communities and the country at large. When they are honoured as deemed fit, this inspires and gives hope to the younger generation that indeed there are the rewards for excellence, diligence and patriotism. In case of Nigeria, the situation is exactly opposite. Doesn’t that explain why an average Nigerian youngster doesn’t care about impacting the lives of fellow countrymen, and, moreover, doesn’t give a damn about the community development? Fela Durotoye has touched the lives of so many Nigerian youths as a foremost motivational speaker and author. Through various nation-building projects, he helped many young ones to find their purpose in life and build outstanding businesses/careers. This fantastic man inspired numerous Nigerians to create solutions to the overwhelming problems the country is facing. Fela is the CEO of Gemstone Group, an organisation, whose mission is to raise excellent leaders at any age committed to the process of turning Nigeria into the world’s most desirable nation to live in by December 31, 2025. Isn’t that amazing? I can easily remember the ecstasy and eagerness with which we used to watch New Dawn with Funmi on NTA in the 2000s. We were always looking forward to that moment when the legendary Funmi Iyanda would feature the story of the “hard-to- reach” Nigerians (particularly children, youths and women), and then bring succour to them in a very inspiring way. That emotional stories never failed to strike the cord of patriotism in me Full details here http://www.naij.com/497065-basketmouth-fela-durotoye-funmi-iyanda-usa-celebrates-nigeria-doesnt.html |

The Area Pastor, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Calvary Parish, Oshodi, Lagos, Jeff Agambi, has warned the Federal Government not to allow the United States impose the same-sex bill on Nigeria in the course of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the countrry. Agambi said this during the church’s free medical outreach in the Oshodi area during the weekend. The cleric, who noted that same-sex marriages were against biblical doctrine, said Buhari should not bow to pressure and compromise Nigerians’ stance on the matter. He said, “Men having sexual affection for fellow men are not natural. God did not create man and man, but man and woman. Same-sex marriages are basically against biblical belief. I enjoin the president to hold Nigeria dear in his heart and not bow to the pressure of the world. “President Buhari should not compromise. He should not look at what he alone stands to gain. He should stand by what the majority of Nigerians want.” On the medical programme he said, “The directive for this programme is from our General Overseer, Pastor E.A. Adeboye. We must impact our society. We believe we must also give back to the society we live in. This is the 16th anniversary of the church, which is also the number of the years that we have been having this programme.” The doctor at the outreach, Cosmas Odoemena, advised Nigerians to imbibe the culture of regular medical check-ups. “This programme is also a public health enlightenment. We were supposed to have breast cancer and cervical cancer screenings. Medical check-ups are supposed to be six months, which translates to twice a year,” he added. The programme, which included HIV test, Blood Pressure test, Sugar Level test, and the distribution of free drugs, had about 100 participants. http://www.dailypost.ng/2015/07/20/dont-allow-obama-force-you-to-accept-same-sex-marriage-redeemed-pastor-warns-buhari/

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday
vowed to recover billions of dollars stolen
under the administration of his immediate
predecessor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
He said the Jonathan government threw the
nation into a financial crisis by throwing all
financial and administrative processes in
parastatals and agencies to “the dogs”
Promising that the era of impunity and financial
recklessness was over, the President said the
next 90 days might be hard for the Federal
Government and the states.
“The next three months may be hard, but
billions of dollars can be recovered, and we will
do our best,” Buhari said in a statement made
available to journalists after his meeting with the
36 state governors in Abuja.
But he did not state how he would go about the
recovery of the looted funds.
Buhari regretted that the impunity, lack of
accountability and financial recklessness in the
management of national resources by the past
administration threw the country into a situation
that is worse than what happened in the
Second Republic.
The President, in the statement by his Special
Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina,
added, “There are financial and administrative
instructions in every government parastatal and
agency.
“But all these were thrown to the dogs in the
past. Honestly, our problems are great, but we
will do our best to surmount them.”
He said that a comprehensive statement on
the economic and financial situation inherited by
his administration would be made public within
the next four weeks.
“We will try and put the system back into the
right position. What happened in the 2nd
Republic has apparently happened again, and
even worse, but we will restore sanity to the
system,” Buhari assured the governors.
It will be recalled Buhari toppled the Second
Republic government of President Shehu
Shagari on December 31, 1983 on allegations of
corruption and gross mismanagement.
The President, according to the statement by
Adesina, expressed surprise that governors
had been tolerating the atrocities allegedly
committed in the management of the Excess
Crude Account since 2011.
He then promised to tackle the issue decisively.
The President also declared that the payment of
national revenue into any account other than
the Federation Account was an abuse of the
constitution.
He added that most of what he heard going
on in many agencies and corporations,
particularly the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation, were clearly illegal.
On the refund of money spent on federal
projects by state governments, Buhari assured
the governors that the Federal Government
would pay, but insisted that due process must
be followed.
The President said that special assistance would
be given the three North-East states badly
affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.
On an immediate lifeline for states that have yet
to pay their workers for months, the President
said that a committee headed by Vice-President
Yemi Osinbajo would look into the ECA and
come up with an amount that could be shared
immediately.
The governors, led by their Chairman,
Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State, had presented
a wish list to the President. Full details here http://www.punchng.com/news/buhari-vows-to-recover-funds-looted-under-jonathan/ |
Nigeria’s Department of State Security today issued a press release detailing the reason they invaded several houses owned by former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd). The statement signed by one Tony Opuiyo stated that Mr. Sambo initailly resisted a legitimate attempt to search his official residence, using soldiers to barricade himself inside. The refusal of Mr. Sambo to allow a thorough created a tense standoff between the SSS team that arrived his home with a search warrant and his military guards, according to the statement. The SSS also detailed how Mr. Sambo kept high-grade rifles at his official residence and how he lined his parking lot with at least 5 luxurious armored cars ostensibly purchased with stolen government funds. http://saharareporters.com/2015/07/18/nigerias-former-national-security-adviser-dasuki-caught-luxury-armored-cars-and-high-1 |

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo has said the Niger Delta
region will suffer for the actions and inactions of the immediate
past president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
Jonathan, who lost the March 28 presidential
election to President Mohammadu Buhari hails
from Bayelsa, a state in the Niger Delta.
Obasanjo spoke while responding to questions
shortly after delivering a convocation lecture at
the Benson Idahosa University, Benin City.
The ex-president said he couldn’t have helped
Jonathan to do his job as Nigeria President after
helping him to secure the position.
He said, “I became the Head of State because of
my performance in the war front. If General
Gowon had not sent me to the war front, he
would not know whether I could perform or not.
He sent me to the war front and because I
performed, we both shared the credit. But if I had
failed, he would not have shared the
condemnation with me. I would have taken that
alone.
“I believe that the opportunity that afforded itself
in 2010 was for somebody from the minority to
on his self esteem become the President of
Nigeria. We should never lose such opportunity.
What he did with that opportunity is entirely up
to him. What he did or did not do with it will
reflect for a long time on that part of the country.
There is no particular person who got there
without the people.”
