Nairaland / General / How To Start A Blog (to Make Money Or Otherwise) by harjex10(m): 12:55am On Nov 27, 2019
7 steps to start a blog
Decide what to blog about
Choose a blogging platform
Pick hosting
Set up your blog
Get started with WordPress
Complete your domain setup
Customize & launch!

What is a blog?
A blog is a type of website with posts (articles). The newest ones are usually displayed at the top.

Why start a blog?
Here are a few popular reasons from my readers:

Make money working from home. I make a full-time income blogging. Many bloggers do the same. Blogging takes work, but low risk and low overhead make it a great opportunity.
Become a published author. Publishers want authors to have an online presence. The reason is simple: it’s a lot easier to sell books to people who already know you. A blog is a perfect way to become known.
Help your business or organization. A blog helps businesses and organizations reach a lot of people at little cost.
Just write. If you want to write, share your story or encourage others, a blog is a great place to do that.
A blog is an online home you own and control. If you’re serious about breaking into the online space, don’t put your livelihood, brand or reputation in the hands of others (like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or other social media).

How much does a blog cost?
If you use the method below, it works out to $5 to $10 a month. I blogged for years on this budget. As my blog and income grew, I started paying for more premium tools and services, but they are not required to start.

Can I start a blog for free?
Yes, but I don’t recommend it if you want to make money. Why? Five reasons:

Limited money-making capability. Some free services limit the money you can make unless you “upgrade” to a higher level. You’ll have to pay for that upgrade of course, which defeats the purpose of having a free blog in the first place.
Lack of support. Companies don’t offer free blogs out of the goodness of their hearts. They want to make money. If you’re not making them money, they won’t go out of their way to keep you happy. Sometimes this means you’ll have little to no support. Other times you’ll be badgered with offers for their paid-for products.
Only basic features. Basic features might not be a problem at first, but as you grow, you’ll feel the pinch. Expandability and flexibility are key. Both are limited with free blogging services.
Switching isn’t easy. If you want to switch to a better service later (common for those who start a free blog), it’s a hassle and can be costly. Doing it yourself takes a lot of time and know-how. Hiring someone to do it correctly costs hundreds of dollars.
Can’t use others for inspiration. This happens to new bloggers all the time. They start a blog for free. Soon they notice cool features on other blogs which they want too. The problem is, those features aren’t options on their free service.
If those common pitfalls don’t convince you, or a free blog is truly your only choice, I would start with Medium or Blogger.

How long will it take to make money?
Those who treat their blog like a part-time job typically start making coffee money around 6 months and a solid part-time income around 12 months. If you want to make a consistent, full-time income, allow 24 months.

What is the best kind of blog to start?
Most big and small bloggers have a self-hosted WordPress blog. It’s my recommendation too.

These are my easy-to-follow steps to start a self-hosted WordPress blog, no technical experience required.

Step one to start a blog
Step 1: Decide what to blog about
If you’re part of a business, company or organization, your blog should be related to the product(s) or service(s) you provide, or the cause you promote.

If you’re an individual, you have more flexibility when choosing a topic. I talked about it here, but the main things to remember are:

Blog about something you enjoy. If you aren’t excited about your topic, writing about it will be drudgery. (And who wants that?) Also, readers won’t be enthusiastic if you aren’t.
Blog about something with plenty of room for discussion. A blog requires a lot of content to get going and remain interesting. You’ll be at this a long time so make sure you have plenty to talk about.
Choose a niche in which you can establish yourself as an authority. You probably won’t be the first person to blog about the topic you choose. Don’t fret about this, just come up with a unique angle. Do you have a reasonable chance of making your blog better than others talking about the same thing? The goal for any blog is to become the go-to resource in its topic or niche.
What if I don’t know what to blog about?
Start anyway! One of the biggest beginner mistakes is thinking your topic must be set in stone before you start. If you’re like most of us, you’ll either switch topics or settle into something as you go.

Step two to make a clickable image
Step 2: Choose a blogging platform
If you want to open a restaurant, you need a kitchen to prepare food. If you want to start a blog, you need a blogging platform (a.k.a. content management system or CMS) to prepare words.

There are many blogging platforms to choose from. WordPress, Blogger, Squarespace, Wix and Weebly are a few.

All have pros and cons, but WordPress is by far the most popular (source) , and for good reason. It’s flexible, functional, has a large community of users and works great if you want to make money.

I use and recommend WordPress.

But not from . Wait, what? I know, it’s a bit confusing. It has to do with hosting. So let’s talk about hosting…

Step three to make a clickable image
Step 3: Pick hosting
As I said, if you want to open a restaurant, you need a kitchen to prepare food. But you also need a dining room to serve your guests, right?

Similarly, if you want to start a blog, you need a blogging platform to prepare words, but you also need hosting, a place to “serve” your blog to visitors.

Put another way, a blogging platform puts your words into blog form. Hosting makes your blog live and accessible on the internet.

Let’s recap:

Kitchen + dining room = restaurant
Blogging platform + hosting = blog.
With me so far?

Really quickly, and just so you’re in the know, let’s go back to that confusing thing I mentioned at the end of Step 2…

In short, do not go to to start your blog. Let me explain.

When you choose WordPress as your blogging platform, you have two options for hosting:

Hosted WordPress blogs, sometimes called blogs, are hosted by WordPress themselves. These blogs are free, but in exchange, you get less control and your income potential is limited. (Sad.)
Self-hosted WordPress blogs, sometimes called WordPress.org blogs, are hosted by a host you choose yourself. These blogs cost a little money but give you much more control, plus your income is not limited. (Hooray!)
Sidenote: Even though a self-hosted WordPress blog is sometimes called a WordPress.org blog, you do not have to use a .org at the end of your name. You can still use .com, just like I do for AmyLynnAndrews.com. Alright, moving on…

This guide teaches you how to start a self-hosted WordPress blog, the kind of blog preferred by beginner and veteran bloggers alike.

As we said, to start your own blog, you need two things: a blogging platform + hosting. Let’s get both at once, shall we? We will meet in Part 2.

Thank you

Health / Re: Interview: Upcoming Dj/producer Harjex The DJ by harjex10(m): 12:31pm On Mar 17, 2019
Harjex_The_DJ is a 18 year old DJ from Lagos. He is the CEO of Harjex Records. who produces EDM, House, and Dance music. Harjex started making mixtape after struggling with depression and anxiety. After a thirty day rehab stay, Harjex found his love for making music and has been happy ever since. He has recently dropped his some of his mixtape "Harjex Vol.1 a superb hit.

How long have you been in the music business and how did you get started in the first place?

Harjex: I’ve only been in the music business for about 2years now, and I started Dj’ing latest 2year when I discovered I had the talent in me and I’ve always had a passion for music and I decided to go for it.

Who are your strongest inspirations or influences?

Harjex: My influences are DJ kaywise, DJ baddo, DJ consequences, Chainsmokers, and DJ exclusive. But my inspiration for making music is because I love to do it. When I’m making music i can escape any struggles or issues I’m having at that point in my life. There is nothing better than hearing a song you created that makes your friends and fans dance.

What is it that you love about the Dj/Producing scene?

Harjex: As far as the DJ scene goes, i love to make people dance and have a good time. When you’re responsible for making a large audience have a good time it can be nerve wracking but also can be a huge high in itself. And when you see the people dance and lose themselves in the music you make….it’s a special feeling. As far as the producing goes, there is no better feeling then when fans and friends tell you how much they love the song, and you know that it’s your song they love.

On the other hand, is there anything that really bugs you about the scene and how it works?

Harjex: If i could pick something that bugs me about the music scene, it would probably be the business aspect of it. ITunes and other music platforms only want to play and feature popular artists because it will make them money. There are a ton of great artists out there that have great music but can’t get a chance because the major platforms are concerned about the business side of things rather than how good the music is.

What do you think separates you from the crowd of D/Producers emerging right now?

Harjex: I think what separates me from other Dj’s/Producers is that the mix's I create all have a different feel to them. I don’t just make same sounding mix's and stick to one genre. Even though the genre I produce is mainly dance music I still try to make every mix unique in its own way.

What is your opinion regarding the difference between old school DJing where everything was restricted to vinyl and modern DJing where most tracks are never put on any physical medium before or after release?

Harjex: I admire how things were done with the old school Dj’ing but i would be lying if i didn’t say i like modern times just as much.

Do you think this has hurt exclusivity of having a certain sound, or a DJ’s ability to have a “unique” style?

Harjex: No I dont think so

Do you think having your own style separate from all the other DJs/Producers out there, is even important in modern Djing/Producing? Or is it all about how catchy the mix is, even if it sounds like everybody else.

Harjex: I think you have to have your own style, if you don’t then you don’t give people a reason to listen to you. Now on the other hand making a catchy mix is important too. I think making a catchy mix doesn’t make you sound like everyone else, i just think it shows you can create great music. A DJ can be the greatest of all time, but if they can’t put out a great hit or make great mix that is timeless then being the greatest DJ doesn’t really matter.

What is one mistake you see a lot of up and coming DJ/Producers making, and that maybe you have tried to avoid?

Harjex: The artists i mainly look at don’t make many mistakes lol. But as far as me, I try to avoid the mistake of being content. When you get content you usually tend to not work as hard. So I always try to keep getting better and to never settle.

What do you try to communicate to the audience through your vibe?

Harjex: I try to make them feel happy and to not worry about what else is going on in their lives. For the two hours I’m with them i want them to forget about everything and just dance, and have a good time

If you could eternally be stuck in one year or era’s music scene, which year or era would it be for you?

Harjex: I want to go back to the old days. I loved the music I listened to as I grew up those days

And from your chosen year/era, what is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?

Harjex: Probably the song by wizkid called "say my name"

What is it about your genre and style that you love above all over other electronic genres?

Harjex: Like i said before I think almost every mix i make sounds different and unique and thats what I love.

If someone has never heard your mix, which keywords would you personally use to describe your overall sound and style?

Harjex: Uplifting, progressive, and meaningful.

Do you consider Internet and all the social media websites as fundamental in building a career in music today, and what is your personal relationship with the new technology at hand?

Harjex: I definitely think you have to have social media if you’re an upcoming artist. These days social media provides an outlet to get your music out there. I think its pivotal that you use social media to your advantage as an upcoming artist. And as far as my relationship with the technology at hand, i definitely try to use it to get my music out there.

Tell us something about your releases. Which parts do you personally handle between performance (singing), production, mixing and mastering?

Harjex: I pretty much make and produce everything besides the vocals I use. Obviously I can’t sing lol, so I have to get my vocals from other places.

What is your relation with visual media and YouTube etc. Should fans expect videos of your releases in the future?

Harjex: Right now their aren’t any music videos but that is going to change very shortly, I’ll be releasing a music video soon!

What is your latest release and where can fans find it?

Harjex: My latest mix is “Fotifoyin_mix” and its will soon be available on SoundCloud and other platforms

Do you have a motto or positive message stuck somewhere in your mind to inspire yourself, or anybody else, at any given time of difficulty? If so, what would it be?

Harjex: Success is not a day job
