Crime / Lady Arrested After Causing Fire On Azman Flight by Harrypromise: 8:11am On Nov 08, 2019
A 24-year-old unnamed lady was on Thursday evening arrested at the Muritala Mohammed Airport 2, Lagos, by security operatives after causing fire on Azman Flight ZQ 2323 LOS ETD bound for Abuja.

The aircraft had 135 passengers and six crew on board at the time of the incident.

The young lady was said to have poured hot charcoal from a shisha with her inside the aircraft’s toilet, causing smoke and minimal fire to break out as the aeroplane throttled further into the sky.

The situation led to panic among passengers, who could not contain their fear and shock.

SaharaReporters gathered that smoke detector alerted the crew to the incident while fire extinguisher was used to help bring the situation under control.

The aircraft was said to have been surrounded by firefighters while passengers were de-boarded.

One passenger, who asked not to named, said, “At first, the aircraft seemed to have been cleared. “We were been told to wait for boarding.

“Many passengers declined to continue the journey with same aircraft.

“We were told by the officials of the airline that NCAA was still carrying out integrity test on the aircraft. Not yet cleared to fly,” one passenger said.

Director of Consumer Protection, NCAA, Adamu Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident, explained in a statement that the passengers were asked to disembark from the aircraft after the captain noticed a snag on aircraft with registration number 5N-HAI.

Sports / Two Major Reasons Why I Retired From Super Eagles – Mikel Obi by Harrypromise: 1:35pm On Oct 17, 2019
Former Super Eagles Captain, John Obi Mikel, has revealed two major reasons he decided to retire from international football.

Mikel who is currently with Trabzonspor Club in Turkey left the Super Eagles shortly after Nigeria came third in the last Nations Cup in Egypt.

According to the midfielder, the first reason was to pave way for younger players and the need to soft-pedal since he no longer has many years of football ahead of him.

He also expressed confidence in the present players of Super Eagles, noting that the players are not only talented but determined to excel.

The former Chelsea midfielder stated this in a chat with Trabzonspor’s official magazine.

”We currently have very talented young players. They’re all bright. I think these players can handle the challenges. I had to make room for them, besides; I don’t have many years for football in front of me. I want to focus on my team in the remaining period, “he said.

”I served the national team for 13 years, most of them as captain. In this period, we achieved significant successes as a team,” he added.

Politics / No Strike Notice Issued In Anticipation Of Failure To Reach An Agreement - NLC by Harrypromise: 10:55am On Oct 16, 2019
The General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Emmanuel Ugboaja, said labour did not issue any strike notice in anticipation of a failure to reach an agreement with the Federal Government on consequential adjustment of the minimum wage.

While making the clarification on the sidelines of negotiations in Abuja last night, he explained that what the initial statement issued said was that labour could not guarantee industrial peace, if, after October 16, 2019, the Federal Government does not reconvene the meeting for the adjustment.

Ugboaja maintained that “Labour has other avenues to ventilate its grievances and strike would only be a last resort.

Government and labour meanwhile yielded grounds in the negotiations yesterday, with talks scheduled to continue 2:00 p.m. today.

The government moved up from 11 per cent for Grade Levels (GL) 07-14 and 6.5 per cent for GL 15-17 to a new offer of 17 per cent for GL 07-09, 15 per cent for workers on GL 10-14, and 12 per cent for GL 15-17. Also, labour’s team shifted from 29 per cent to 25 for GL 07-14 and 24 per cent to 20 per cent for workers on GL 15-17.

Responding to the development, Acting Head of Service, Folashade Yemi, said: “We have had a very peaceful engagement. But we discovered that there are some grey areas that need to be ironed out. By the grace of God, tomorrow, discussions will continue and we believe that we will be able to get everything resolved.”

Politics / Anger And Suspicion In The Senate Over Secret Recruitment by Harrypromise: 10:35am On Oct 16, 2019
Anger and suspicion are brewing in the Senate over the employment slots allegedly allocated to some members of the upper legislative chamber by some federal agencies.

According to sources, many of the lawmakers are particularly bitter that their leaders allegedly shared the 100 slots allegedly given the Senate by the Federal Inland Revenue Service among themselves.

An aggrieved senator from the South-West, said on condition of anonymity, “We were given 100 slots by the FIRS but our leaders shared the slots among themselves.”

Chairman of the Senate committee charged with ensuring employment complies with the federal character principle yesterday vowed to expose such lawmakers involved in the job racketeering.

Danjuma La’ah said: “I don’t care who they have given job slots to. Is it the leadership that will give them the backing? The leadership knows that I am capable of doing my job. That is why they gave me that responsibility,” he told journalists at the National Assembly complex.

“I am using my sense to fish out the bad elements. It is not a leadership directive. There are rules and regulations guiding us as a committee. The affected agencies should present themselves for clearance because I will not take it easy. Our people have suffered in bondage for long.”

He said: “I am not aware that any agency gave out employment slots to the Senate. The leadership has not told us that they received any slot. So, whom did they give? As the chairman of this committee, who is also representing Kaduna South, I was not in any way aware that we have been given any employment slots. So, we are going ahead with our probe. I have taken it upon myself that I will probe deeply into the agencies’ claims and carry out an extensive investigation. We are going to expose all those that are tarnishing the image of the Federal Government.”

La’ah said further: “We are aware that some of the agencies are selling the employment slots at their disposal.

“They are commercialising employment, selling a single slot for as much as N1.5m, when we have children who have graduated from tertiary institutions who could not get any job for many years. Some people are just taking Nigerians for granted. Our children are suffering, running from one end to another, looking for jobs. Some have become bandits and terrorists because the jobs meant for them have been cornered by some greedy people.”

Politics / JUS IN: Senate Passes Amended Production Sharing Contract Bill by Harrypromise: 6:56pm On Oct 15, 2019
The Senate, in a bid to shore up Nigeria’s revenue earning, on Tuesday passed the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contract Act 2004 (amendment) Bill 2019.

This was just as the upper chamber received a formal request from President Muhammadu Buhari seeking the amendment of the Act.

The bill was passed by the upper chamber after consideration of the report of the Joint committees on Petroleum (Upstream), Gas and Finance.

With the passage of the bill, it is estimated that Nigeria stands to benefit about N400 billion being revenue due to the federal government from International Oil Companies (IOCs) operating in the country.

The Senate, during the clause-by-clause consideration of the committee’s report, however amended clause 17 of the Act, which recommended 10 years for a future review of the law.

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, during consideration of the report, demanded explanation from the Joint committee as to why the timeline for review of Production Sharing Contracts was amended from 5 years to 10 years.

In his response, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Albert Bassey Akpan, explained that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and International Oil Companies bemoaned the five-year period which they said was insufficient to take certain final investment decisions.

“It takes about five years for an investor to take a Final Investment Decision oil investment (FID). So the NNPC and others are saying for you to review the law, you must give them a stable law; something they can project on”, Akpan said.

Some lawmakers including Senators Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe Central) and Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano North), who were not swayed by Senator Akpan’s explanation, insisted on the retention of the existing five-year periodic timeline provided in the Act.

Senator Ibikunle Amosun (APC, Ogun Central), however prevailed on his colleagues and moved a motion for an amendment of clause 17 to specify eight years as the timeline for the review of the Production sharing Contracts.

The motion was seconded by Senator Kabiru Gaya (APC, Kano South) and thereafter adopted by the upper chamber when put to a voice vote by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate said the National Assembly made history with the passage of the Bill for an amendment of Production sharing Contracts Act.

While, commending President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment towards ensuring the amendment of the Act, he stressed that Nigeria stands to benefit N1.5 billion as a result of the amendment.

He said: “We have done what could not be done since 2003 to date. Today marks a milestone in the history of the Senate, and particularly the National Assembly.

“With the passage of this bill, Nigeria will gain at least $1.5 billion in 2020 as a result of this amendment. The Senate will do more.

“I must commend President Buhari, who mentioned the need to amend this bill in his speech when he presented the 2020 budget to the National Assembly last week, and of course, we also received an executive communication from him.”

Lawan emphasised the amendment of the Production Sharing Contract Act will create a level playing ground for the government and International Oil Companies doing business in Nigeria.

“For the IOCs doing business in Nigeria, the amendment will not in anyway discourage investment. We expect that they will continue to do business in Nigeria”.

“When we legislate at the National Assembly, we will always be mindful of the need to have a competitive environment.

“When we work on the Petroleum Industry Bill, maybe in January, we will ensure that it is a win-win situation for Nigerians and those doing business in the oil and gas industry”, Lawan added.

Politics / Senate Adjourns Budget Defence by Harrypromise: 6:37pm On Oct 15, 2019
The Senate on Tuesday, adjourned plenary for two weeks to engage Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in defence of their 2020 budget.

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan announced the adjournment during Tuesday’s plenary.

Lawan said that the adjournment was to engage Ministries, Departments and Agencies for the purpose of budget defence of the Appropriation Bill 2020.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the President of the Senate had on Oct. 8, urged MDAs to appear before Committees of the Senate in October to defend their 2020 budget.

According to Lawan, the exercise is supposed to last for two weeks.

“And like we said before, for the sake of emphasis, all MDAs should take this opportunity to come forward to the various committees in the National Assembly to defend their budget within the two weeks.

“This is the only window available. And for our committees, we wish you the best of outing.

“We will be coming to the National Assembly those of us who are not members of the committees to give the moral support that is required,” he said.

Politics / Attack On Oshiomhole: APC Has Disintegrated, Says PDP by Harrypromise: 4:45pm On Oct 14, 2019
The PDP says the violent attack by members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on embattled National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, has further confirmed that the dysfunctional APC has finally disintegrated.

The PDP says the fact that APC members openly took up arms against its leadership is a huge demonstration of their eternal rejection of the APC and the Buhari Presidency, particularly for the ruins they have caused our nation.

For APC members to publicly call their National Chairman a “thief”, as reported in the open media, amply captures the mood of majority of Nigerians, including APC members, that the APC and its government are havens for thieves, criminal gangs and corrupt persons.

The indisputable fact among Nigerians is that the APC has become torn apart within its core. The manifest greed and ravenousness of its leaders, particularly, in the Presidential villa, in addition to endless infighting over positions and looted resources has further exposed the party as a soulless mob.

The APC has never been a genuine platform for governance. It has neither the predisposition nor the design for operable people-oriented policy and programmes. If anything, it has remained a special purpose vehicle, for power grabbing, hijacked by an oppressive and exploitative cabal, who has no iota of interest in the welfare of Nigerians.

Indeed, the propensity of APC leaders at looting our common patrimony as well as the total neglect of the living conditions of the masses, whose mandate they had stolen, has become a huge source of anger and resentment in the hearts of Nigerians.

Nigerians expect Oshiomhole to respond to the demands of his party members, who are chasing him around like a common tout and for which he was reported to have hidden in a hotel in Benin City.

Is it not absurd for a National Chairman of a political party that claims to have won an election just a few months back to require the services of truck load of police men and personal thugs to escape from Benin to Abuja?

The Edo incident reminds of how the APC National Chairman also allegedly fled the nation at the heat of his reported interrogation by the Department of State Services (DSS) in 2018 over alleged corruption charges.

The PDP however encouraged Nigerians not to despair. There is always an end to any platform that does not have the care of the people as its primary goal in governance.

Our party, which has remained the bastion of our collective consciousness as a nation is at the Supreme Court, where Nigerians expect that justice will prevail in retrieving our stolen presidential mandate to end the nightmare of the APC.

The Nation gathered that two females and three males were among the casualties in the attack at the filing station around Borromeo round-about and the pharmacy shop along Awka road.
The robbers, numbering about six, were said to have driven into the petrol station at about 2.00 am, after being allowed access by the attendants who mistook them for customers.

Foreign Affairs / South Korea’s Justice Minister Resigns Amid Scandal by Harrypromise: 9:35am On Oct 14, 2019

South Korea’s recently appointed justice minister, Cho Kuk resigned on Monday saying a graft scandal swirling around his family had become a political burden for President Moon Jae-in’s government.

Since his appointment on Sept.9, there have been street protests against Cho, due to investigations mounted by prosecutors into his family’s financial investments and the university admissions of his children.

Huge crowds of Cho’s supporters and critics have marched in South Korea’s capital in recent weeks, demonstrating how the months-long saga over Cho has deepened the country’s political divide.

“I decided I must not burden the President and the government with my family’s affairs anymore,” Cho said in a statement announcing his resignation.

“I believe that now is the time for me to step down so that reforming the prosecutor’s office will be completed,” he added.

Yonhap news agency reported that Cho’s wife and two children had been questioned by prosecutors several times.

On Friday, Yonhap said a “court procedure” involving Cho’s wife, a university professor with the family name Chung, was scheduled to start.

Foreign Affairs / What I Will Do Differently As Ugandan President – Bobi Wine by Harrypromise: 8:30am On Oct 14, 2019
Ugandan musician turned politician, Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine has said he will break down the power of the president and be more accountable and answerable to the people of Uganda if he becomes the number one citizen of the country.

The lawmaker also said he will revamp the educational sector of the country where young people will be taught how to become job creators and not job seekers.

The pop star-turned-politician, who is currently in Nigeria as one the speakers at 2019 Felabration symposium referred to as The FELA Debates, said this in an interview with PM News at the Freedom Park, Lagos on Sunday.

Bob Wine who believes that a president should be seen as an ordinary citizen and an ordinary human been who should be accountable is one of President Yoweri Museveni’s fiercest critics.

In his words, “First of all, I want to prove to people of Uganda that being president is not being God, being president is being just like any other citizen only that the president is more accountable and answerable.”

“So If I become the president, first of all, I will break down the power of the president and make the president another human being. I will also have to break down the education system and re-educate our people most importantly in self-love. I will have to improve agriculture and make sure young people will be taught how to become job creators and not job seekers.”

“Of course, there are many other things I will have to do but most importantly I will make sure all people, particularly in my country have equal opportunities and equal chances where everybody is judged by what they can do and not by where they come from,” he said.

“Great leaders must give way for greater leaders, good leaders must give way for better leaders and a strong and assertive population must also give way for a stronger and even more assertive population,” said the 37-year-old reggae star who is running for president in the country’s 2021 elections. His star power has attracted a large following among young Ugandans, who make up more than half of the country’s population.

Wine, who is riding on a revolutionary movement called the “People Power” to clinch the presidential seat, has continued to face many persecutions and intimidations from the ruling government.

He was charged with treason and detained for weeks in 2018 after a faceoff between his supporters and Museveni’s party descended into chaos during a by-election. Wine said he was tortured in military detention.

He said, “We are going through what Nigeria went through sometimes ago. We are going through what Fela went through or even worse. African dictators from time to time tend to be reading from the same book, just like Fela was beaten, arrested many times and unjustly persecuted, that is the same thing I’m going through back in Uganda.”

“My music is outlawed, my concerts are abolished and I’m not even allowed to appear at a public gathering but still we resist musically because music is stronger than anything and I believed with perseverance and persistence like Fela Kuti, we will certainly triumph and those generations that will come after will be inspired just like we are inspired by Fela,” he added.

Wine also believes that sitting down will not help his country but to be fearless and challenge the status quo by making the leaders accountable and answerable to his people who own the country.

“We can only get better by we the people holding our leaders accountable. So we cannot just sit back and hope that the leaders will get better, it’s going to take the actions of we the citizens through inspiration of people like Fela that was fearless and straight forward about what he believed in and demanding for what they know that they deserve. So constant standing up and calling the leaders to be accountable,” he stated.

Wine entered the political sphere in Uganda in 2017 and won his parliamentary seat the same year. The MP has been rallying opposition and dissents to his side and has even led a protest against some government policies.

Foreign Affairs / Ex-south African President Zuma Faces Corruption Charges Of $2.5 Billion by Harrypromise: 10:49am On Oct 11, 2019
South Africa’s former President Jacob Zuma will stand trial on corruption charges relating to a $2.5 billion arms deal after a Pietermaritzburg High Court denied him a permanent stay of prosecution on Friday.

The ruling by Judge Jerome Mnguni paves way for Zuma’s trial to start on Oct. 15.

Zuma, who was in office from 2009-2018, had applied for a permanent stay of prosecution from 16 charges of fraud, racketeering and money laundering relating to a deal to buy 30 billion rand of European military hardware for South Africa’s armed forces in the late 1990s.

The 77-year-old has denied any wrongdoing and has said he is the victim of a politically motivated witch-hunt.

The charges against Zuma were originally filed a decade ago but then set aside by the National Prosecuting Authority shortly before he successfully ran for president in 2009.

After his election, his opponents fought a lengthy legal battle to have the charges reinstated, finally succeeding in 2016. Zuma countered with his own legal challenges.

Health / How Women Use Toothpaste To Tighten Vagina by Harrypromise: 9:21am On Oct 05, 2019
A Nigerian medical doctor has revealed that women use toothpaste to tighten the vagina and said the practice has become an obsession among them.

Dr Oluwole Yusuf, based in the central Nigerian city of Ilorin who made the revelation has also flagged the practice as unhealthy and harmful as it can cause vagina irritation and inflammation, among other diseases.

According to him, the vagina is a self- cleansing organ that the body system does without help.

“Toothpaste is caustic and too abrasive for a sensitive body part like the vagina and using such on it can destroy the organisms meant to protect the vagina from possible infections.

“When the vagina can no longer protect itself, the body is prone to infections which could later destroy the tubes and block the chances of getting pregnant,’’ Yusuf said.

He urged women not to allow themselves to be “body shamed’’ by their partners thereby, leading them to “a journey of ruin and regret’’.

“If a man tells you that you are too loose down there and you want to ruin your future because of that, he will eventually leave you for another.

“Be confident in yourself and allow your body be the way it is.

“There are different healthy exercises or practices that can be done that will slowly tighten the vagina without posing a threat to the woman,.
