President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday met behind closed doors with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

Gbajabiamila’s car drove to the forecourt of the Presidential Villa around 10.22am

The meeting started at the President’s office around 11.30am.

Discussion at the meeting may not be unconnected with the killings of Nigerians in South Africa and other national issues.


Some members of the House of Representatives had urged Gbajabiamila to cut short the recess for the lawmakers over xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.

They want the lower chamber of the National Assembly to give legislative backing to the executive arm of government toward protecting Nigerians in South Africa.

The meeting with the President was still in progress at the time of filing this report.

Elizabeth,younger sister to the wife of Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, kidnapped last week, has been freed, The Nation has learnt.

The younger sister to Mrs. Edith Okowa, was confirmed kidnapped by uknown gunmen at Temple Clinic junction, off Anwai Road, close to Delta state Government House in Asaba.

The victim was said to have been freed yesterday after over N150million was allegedly paid as ransom.

A source at the Government House, Asaba confirmed that she was freed, but denied knowledge of payment of ransom.

Police Commissioner Adeyinka Adeleke denied knowledge of her been freed.

He said: “I’m just hearing it from you. I don’t have that information that she was kidnapped, let alone have information that she has been freed.”

Some ministerial nominees have started arriving the National Assembly for their screening by the Senate today.

President Muhammadu Buhari had sent the list of 43 ministerial nominees to the Senate on Tuesday for screening and ratification.

The Senate had yesterday suspended their recess to begin screening of the ministerial nominees from today, which was why some of the nominees had arrived the National Assembly for the exercise.

Some ministerial nominees already on ground for the exercise are: Mr. Adamu Adamu, Sunday Dare, George Akume, Ogbonnaya Onu and Olorunnimbe Mamora.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo: Visa ban imposed on Nigeria’s election riggers

The U.S. State Department said on Tuesday it had imposed visa restrictions on Nigerians it said were involved in trying to undermine democracy in presidential and parliamentary elections this year.

However, the department did not name the individuals or say how many were affected by the visa restrictions.

President Muhammadu Buhari won a second term in February in an election marred by delays, logistical glitches and violence.

“These individuals have operated with impunity at the expense of the Nigerian people and undermined democratic principles and human rights,” spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement.

“The Department of State emphasises that the actions announced today are specific to certain individuals and not directed at the Nigerian people or the newly elected government,” Ortagus added.

IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu: briefs Buhari on Shiite protest

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has briefed President Muhammadu Buhari over the protests by Shiites in Abuja.

At the end of the meeting, the IGP told journalists: “We came this morning to brief Mr. President on the security situation in the country, especially the activities of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN). Just to give him an update of what is happening in the country vis a vis their activities.

“Specifically we briefed him of the incessant act coming out of this group of people, protesting here and there. We briefed him on the fact that we have been able to curtail their excesses and to let him understand that everything is under control.”

“The president asked us to make sure we provide security for every citizen of this country and not to leave any space that some group of people will create breakdown of law and order.

“So, the charge by Mr. President is that we must provide security for every Nigerian.” he stated

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) on Monday commenced the verification and enrolment of employees of Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) due to retire between January to December 2020.

The Head, Corporate Communications Department, PenCom, Mr Peter Aghahowa at the inauguration of the two-day exercise said it was meant for employees who had attained the age of 60 or 35 years in service.

He said others included in the exercise were employees of tertiary institutions who had served for 35 years or had attained 70 years of age.


Aghahowa said that the retirees were asked to come with their employment letters, promotion letters and other documents to enable the commission to calculate what their benefits would be.

He also advised impending retirees to obtain their National Identity Number (NIN) because its now one of the requirements for the exercise.

“The overall intention of PenCom is to calculate and transmit the total liability to the Federal Government so that adequate budgetary provisions will be made for retirees in the year 2020.

“On the issue of Accrued Rights, I want to assure the general public that the backlog is being cleared.

“The government is releasing funds and as they release funds, we are clearing the backlog. Right now, we have cleared up to August 2018.

“This is why we are pushing for more funds to be budgeted and released to PenCom so that we can clear much of the backlog,’’ he said.

Aghahowa said that the PenCom office was still open for those that could not make it for the two-day exercise for one reason or the other.

Meanwhile, a future retiree, Hajiya Aishatu Ibrahim urged PenCom to work on their servers and network so that the enrolment exercise would be seamless.

“My advice to those that are still in service is that they should start preparing for retirement by getting involved in a business.

“You cannot cope with retirement allowance alone. You need to augment your income and that’s why its important to start a business now,’’ she said.

Mr Chinedu Kosisochukwu appealed to the government to take steps to resolve on time the delay in payment of Accrued Rights.

“I am afraid to think that when I retire, it will take up to a year before I start receiving my pension. Please Government should do something about that.

“At least when one retirees, within one to two months payments of entitlements should start. We hope that the government achieves this soon,’’ he said.

Kosisochukwu said that delay in payments was also one of the causes of corruption in the civil service, as workers steal to “save for the rainy day.’’

Samson Siasia mother kidnapped for the second time in four years

Beauty Ogere Siasia, the 76 year-old mother of former Super Eagles striker and Coach, Samson Siasia has been kidnapped again, the second time in four years.

She was taken away by armed men from her home in Odoni town of Sagbama local government area of the southern state of Bayelsa.

The incident occurred at about 2 a.m. local time, said Butswat Asinim, the state police spokesperson.

It was the second time the 76-year-old woman would be abducted in four years. In November 2015, she was abducted by gunmen who released her after 12 days in captivity.

Local sources at the time said an undisclosed amount was paid in ransom to her abductors.

Asinim said a team of security operatives had commenced a thorough search for the victim.


Her son, former Nigerian football striker, was the coach of the team which won the silver medal of the football event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics held in China.

He was also the coach of the country’s main football team from 2010 to October 2011. He was reappointed in 2016.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has again shown his propensity for mischief with his recent letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, designed to further his claim of a Fulanisation agenda.

According to the Buhari Media Organization (BMO), Obasanjo’s attempt to present this mischief as a solution to the security challenge in the country is not only pretentious but also hypocritical.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke ,BMO said the letter was meant to present the Fulani as an ethnic group harbouring some grievances against the Nigerian state which only a national dialogue would help resolve.

“We have seen through Chief Obasanjo’s latest deceit to present the Fulani as the ‘agent provocateur’ by putting it in the dock of public accusation with claims of some grievances which he insinuated as the cause of banditry, kidnapping and killings in the country.

“What he did with his preamble for a call for a National Dialogue is to place the neck of an entire ethnic group on the slab on the basis of what he, as an octogenarian, perfectly knows to be a long-standing farmers-herders crisis. Yet he sought to place the matter at the doorstep of a President that he has fallen out with, by claiming that the government had been treating it with levity.

“So It was not entirely surprising that the former President found a way of dragging President Muhammadu Buhari into the fray by suggesting ‘vicarious responsibility’ and even went to the extent of saying that ‘perception may be as potent as reality at times’.



“In essence, it is an extension of a previous letter in which he accused the President of harbouring and pursuing a Fulanisation and Islamisation agenda which he couched as one with a solution to the myriad of national problems.

The group also accused the former President of stoking tension in the aftermath of the tragic murder of Mrs Funke Olakunri, daughter of Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the national leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group Afenifere.

“We are shocked that Obasanjo referenced the incident in a manner unbecoming of his status as a three-time head of government, and which further lends credence to the conspiracy theory launched by the Afenifere spokesman Yinka Odumakin and spread by several other unpatriotic elements even before additional facts emerged from eyewitnesses.

“The fact that he alluded to possible outbreak of violence is a pointer to his war mongering mindset. Or else why would a man who prides himself as father of Modern Nigeria so glibly speak of spontaneous or planned attacks against the Fulani which could lead to a Rwanda-like genocide?

“Although we see Chief Obasanjo more as an opposition figure than a former President , yet like many Nigerians have said in reaction to the letter, he is at a stage in his life where he should be seen playing a more conciliatory role rather than always playing to the gallery to suit his political inclination

“It should be beneath an elderly Nigerian that claims to still bear the scar of the 1967-1970 civil war to be stoking ethnic tension under the guise of searching for appropriate solution to the problem of insecurity,” it said.

BMO added that Obasanjo’s penchant for mischief also showed in the manner he suggested a way out as well as the individuals he wants the President to invite for a national conference.

It said: “We wonder why he could not use his membership of the National Council of State to push what he considers as solution to the security challenge in a way that other former Presidents could also bring up suggestions.

“We know that during his years as President, farmers-herders crises claimed 50,000 lives in Plateau state alone and that’s even according to a government report cited by the BBC. It was also within that period that his Attorney General and Minister of Justice Bola Ige was murdered by yet-to-be-identified gunmen, but there was no record of him yielding to any outside suggestion for a security summit.

“We are however convinced of President Buhari’s sincerity and determination to make Nigeria more secure.”

The Oyo State Chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) has urged Gov. Seyi Makinde, to explain the source of his N48 billion asset made public on Monday.

Chief Akin Oke the state’s chairman of the party, disclosed this in Iseyin on Tuesday.

“I don’t think I want to make comment on the issue since I have no idea, but it raises a number of issues.

“He just declared what he has, how did he come about the asset is not there,” Oke said.

The chairman said it would be too early to access the performance of the governor who has spent just a few days in office.

“Going by my experience and exposure, I think it is too early to honestly access a governor just after few days office, I will rather wait till after 100 days or even after 6 months.

“To start accessing people after 6 weeks in office will be so unfair if one wants to be honest to his conscience,” he said.

President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with leader of Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, on the death of his daughter, Mrs Funke Olakunrin.

The deceased was reportedly shot Friday along the Kajola-Ore road, in Ondo State, by those the police described as armed robbers.

The President prayed that God will comfort Pa Fasoranti, and give him the fortitude to bear the grievous loss.

He also directed security agencies to swing into action, and bring the hoodlums to justice in the shortest possible time.

An early morning fire at Amaigbo Market in Obiagu, a sprawling suburb in Enugu, on Friday, has destroyed goods worth millions of naira.

The Chairman of the market, Mr Emeka Nnajiofor, told Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who paid a condolence visit to the traders, that the fire broke out at about 1am.

Nnajiofor said that at least 68 petty traders were affected by the incident, adding that the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained.

He said that most of the stalls in the market were completely razed down by the fire.

Mrs Nkechi Eneh, the Executive Secretary, Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, said that they got a distress call about the inferno and alerted the state Fire Service which, she said, responded promptly.

Eneh said that it took the men of the fire service about two hours to put out the fire.

“The fire affected 68 traders and they are all gathered here,” Eneh told the governor.

Responding, Ugwuanyi directed the Chairman of Enugu North council area to take the inventory of the loss caused by the fire.

He also asked the chairman to ascertain the cost of reconstructing the market and forward the same to his office.

He promised to support the victims with N100,000 each to enable them to return to their businesses.

“We are here to help and console you. The chairman of the council has been directed to evaluate the cost of rebuilding the stalls and report back to us,” Ugwuanyi said.

Barcelona have signed France forward Antoine Griezmann from La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid after paying his 120m euro (£107m) buyout clause.

The 28-year-old World Cup winner has signed a five-year deal which includes an 800m euro (£717m) release clause.

Griezmann joined Atletico from Real Sociedad in 2014 and scored 133 goals in 256 appearances.

He signed a new five-year deal in June 2018 but announced in May he would be leaving the club this summer.

The 2018 World Cup winner becomes the world’s sixth most expensive signing behind Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Philippe Coutinho, Joao Felix and Ousmane Dembele.

Griezmann won the Europa League, the Spanish Super Cup and the Uefa Super Cup during his time at Atletico and was the team’s top scorer in each of the last five seasons.

He becomes Barca’s fourth major signing of the summer, following the acquisition of midfielder Frenkie de Jong from Ajax, goalkeeper Neto from Valencia and defender Emerson from Brazilian side Atletico-MG.

Atletico reported Barcelona to Fifa over an alleged illegal approach for Griezmann in December 2017.

Griezmann then rejected an offer from Barcelona last year and revealed his thought process in a documentary called The Decision.

But earlier this month Atletico said both Barca and Griezmann were disrespectful for agreeing a deal before he had asked to leave the Madrid club.

Griezmann is the third high-profile player to leave Atletico this summer after defender Lucas Hernandez joined Bayern Munich and long-serving captain Diego Godin left to join Inter Milan after his contract expired, while the club has also spent 126m euros to buy Felix from Benfica.

Atletico finished second in La Liga last season, nine points behind Griezmann’s new club.

Griezmann, who finished third in the voting for the Ballon d’Or in 2016 and 2018, joins Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Dembele as Barcelona’s high-profile forward options.

Different media outfits had published a report where Kizz Daniel allegedly said Wizkid was the only person who had a brain and other celebrities who had written against pastor Biodun were brainless.

Kizz Daniel, in a letter written to Vanguard through his lawyers, demands a public apology and withdrawal of the publication, a written undertaking not to publish anything about him without confirmation and the sum of 100 million naira to cover for reputational damage he has already suffered.

Nollywood actress, Kudirat Ogunro, says she will allow her husband to have a girlfriend after their marriage in order to have a settled home.

Ogunro on Friday in Abuja said that men are, by nature, polygamous.

She advised women to stop deceiving themselves by trying to wholly own their husbands.

“I’m not a jealous lover. In fact, when I get married, my husband has to have a girlfriend.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Friday appointed Ms. Tara Adefope as the Director General of Due Process Office. The appointment takes immediate effect.

In a statement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Taiwo Adisa, “The new DG, Due Process Office is a United Kingdom-trained Lawyer, who holds an LLB Law, Hons. Degree from the University of Leicester and an MSc Degree in Corporate Governance and Business Ethics from the Birkbeck University of London.

”She is a professional with broad experience in Governance, Risk, Regulation and Compliance with experience spanning both the public and private sectors. She began her career in the UK in a Governance Advisory firm and subsequently held other positions before her return to Nigeria where her career progressed within the Banking sector as she held various positions within the remit of Compliance”.

Zimbabwe’s 18-man squad arrived Nigeria on Friday ahead of an international friendly match with Nigeria on Saturday in Asaba.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, that his administration will do everything possible to protect them despite Abuja residents voted against him during the February 2019 Presidential election.

He gave the assurance while receiving residents of the FCT that paid him Sallah homage at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Jokingly describing the Abuja residents as unnecessary evil for not voting for him in the February election, he said that he would continue to protect the seat of power because any negative thing that happens to the place would also affect him and the entire residence.

The President also pleaded with political leaders especially his supporters not to complain against his administration in order to avoid sending negative signals that would make his government unpopular.

He said “I want to appreciate the number two man of the country (Vice President Yemi Osinbajo) because he knows what we are going through very quietly. I am very pleased that you came with this very powerful constituency…

“I Appeal to you to remain exemplary so that those under you will know that the country is doing very well. If you break down and complain, the impact will reverberate all over and then, government will not be popular and whatever efforts we are making will not be appreciated.

“I have just spoken to the senator on my left (Philip Aduda) and I told him that his constituency did not vote for me. So I was very pleased that when they made the arrangement they put him very far way from me. I have all the results of all constituencies.

“I am not threatening FCT because to make FCT secure is to make myself secure and the Vice President. I think they are necessary evil that that was why they decided to vote for PDP.”

Reflecting on his three earlier attempts to win the Presidential elections, he said,” During my long journey to this place, 2003, 2007, 2011, those were interesting political developments that enabled me visit all the local governments in this country, all 774 local governments.

“First port of call whenever I visit any local government was to visit the community leader for understanding and support. I am very pleased that Nigerians understand me that although I was a governor, minister of petroleum and one time head of state, people know I don’t have a lot of money to give.

“So when I went round, I smiled and greeted them and I think it has helped. Because by the time I went to campaign for my second and last term constitutionally, I visited all the states this time around, some two states in a day, I thank God for giving me the stamina to do it.

“What impressed me most was the turn out in all the states and FCT. The number of those who turned out are more than what anyone can afford to pay or force to come and listen. So I am very pleased that a lot of Nigerians have voted me, sympathized with me for what I went through between 2003 and 2019.
